Just wanted to get sense of the keyboards everyone was using with the dell streak.

I use smart keyboard and I like it alot, however the only other one I have used is the stock 2.2 keyboard which I believe is swype I did not care for it.
Better Keyboard with the Black Light skin, because I bought it for another device and am used to it / like it.

I agree. By far the best keyboard out there. My beef with most android keyboards is that the space bar is so small. You can hide the comma and period on this keyboard and make the spacebar HUGE!
There are also several skins for this that come with it. HTC, iPhone, etc... Tons of other settings to make it more customized too.
I also see where someone just ported the droid x keyboard. I used that one on my captivate for a while and really liked it too.
But smart keyboard pro hands down is the best.
I'm highly addicted to swype.. I can't live without it.
BTW the streak is my first device in a really long time that doesn't have a physical qwerty keyboard and swype has helped me get over that!
Since a lot of people here said smart keyboard I downloaded it. Its pretty good I like it.

I'm using Swype and I love it. So stinkin' fast. It is one handed type, not two-handed, but as the dadgum thing is so big, I only have one hand free to type with!
I might try out some of the others, but I've just enjoyed Swype that I haven't bothered.
Swype

I used every major keyboard on the market (demo versions) and came back to stock 2.3 keyboard because I didn't find anything impressive about any of them. Smart Keyboard is the closest thing to a keyboard worth paying for, and even then it's just for the adjustable key height and a couple more layout preferences than the default keyboard.
I completely disagree with people who say Swype on the Streak is fast. MAYBE in portrait, but I still don't see how you can hold this thing and type on it with only 1 hand free. In landscape I would have to slide my finger back and forth four times across the width of this huge screen to type a five letter word like "world". I guarantee I can type faster with stock keyboard than anyone with Swype. Granted I went up to 240 with LCD Density so that the keys are more spaced out, which is why I would say Smart Keyboard is the best, just don't care to pay for it.
Hey I just noticed u can increase the hieght of the keyboard with the smart keyboard best $3 I spent lol
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
i use the standard swype keyboard that comes with the froyo build. i think that after some tinkering you get darn fast at it, of course you must have a properly sized hand in order to hold it comfortably in portrait, but alas, I am just lucky enough
I'm currently using thumb keyboard which is designed to make typing easier on tablets in landscape, also has a very nice portrait option which offsets half of the keyboard (it's hard to explain, there's screen shots on the market). You can adjust the height, change skins, it gets more customisable with each update which I like!
Someone on modaco is also working on a clone if the 1.6 keyboard which is coming along nicely but has a few bugs to sort out before it's perfect

+1 on the Thumb Keyboard...I am finally able to type on a touchscreen in portrait mode with my gorilla hands...
But, I got one o dem ipad stylus thingies and have been having fun with it and the Swype keyboard...

What are ur intentions with the phone?
Movie watching? Facebook? What's ur main things u would like to do with ur phone?
Do u enjoy modding/rooting and tweaking ya phone?
The Thunderbolt is known to also have issues with losing signal (3 and 4G) when you go inside...anywhere. The Charge is a powerhouse. I stream hour-long videos with no buffering whether I'm on 4 or 3G. The screen will knock your socks off. The update has made everything smooth and snappy.
The X2 is good too but it's pointless to get a dual core phone unless you're an intensive multitasker with very processor intensive systems running.
I would go with the Thunderbolt.
Had a Samsung before and it was crap. Cheap components and the phone fell apart falling from knee high.
Not a big fan of Motorola either. I think Sense is a lot more developed than motoblur or whatever its called.
I have an HTC Sensation and a friend of mine has the Thunderbolt and from the sounds of it both are pretty comparable, only difference is I have dual core.
Well i would go for the O2x... its AMAZINGLY fast and it may exchange my pc i mean, dont you want to have a phone that loads websites in 3 seconds?
+1 Droid X2!
Get the bolt. Don't even dwell on the other phones. Load AOSP onto it and go.

Ok so i hate the stock asus keyboard on this thing. What do you guys suggest for an alternate?
I love swype on my evo 3d but i hear that it doesnt work that great on the prime. I would like a good swype alternate or a split keyboard.
All suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I have been using swift key tablet. It works great for me. There is a 30 day trial on the market
I dont really care about keyboards since im going to be keeping mine docked most of the time.. but my wife loves Slide IT. It is pretty much Swype for tablet. It is normally $5.99 I think but right now its on sale for $0.99 Has lots of nice free themes all over the market too.
https://market.android.com/details?...t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5kYXN1ci5zbGlkZWl0Il0.
Try A.I.type keyboard.
I used it alot on my HP touchpad (running android). It was very good. Just got my prime this morning and haven't had a chance to do too much with it other than update it to ICS.
here is the Link
I've now used Swype (doesn't fit the screen and a pop-up message to that effect comes up every time you type something). It does work in landscape mode, but not at all in portrait -- you end up with something entirely different than the keys you swyped or tapped. So that was a no go.
I've been using Thumb Keyboard for a few days, but it doesn't work all that well for me, especially since there seem to be many times when I'm holding the device and need to type one-handed. So, it's better than stock, but not perfect for me.
Now I'm using SlideIT, with the metal blue skin that matches ICS perfectly. It's beautiful, fits both landscape and portrait modes flawlessly, and works like a charm.
Unless and until Swype releases a version that works with the Prime's screen resolution, I'm sticking with SlideIT.

I'm the developer of Thumb Keyboard and I'm very interested in this. Do you mean that the performance of TKB is worse or are you referring to the text prediction?
The strategy of Thumb Keyboard is to have user adjustable layouts so that typos are reduced to a minimum. (So correction can be reduced to a miminum). In particular for the Transformer there's an option to adjust the width of the two halves so that the keys are reachable despite the large bezel.
I'm working on a new update (version 5) that will make use of the advanced spelling engine of Ice cream sandwich. Tests have shown that these are as powerful as AI prediction.
flext9 better than sywpe in my opinion

The ASUS keyboard can function the same way Swype does, you just have to enable it in the settings. Having said that, I use Thumb Keyboard.
I am a using SwiftKey x on phone and tablet. The tablet version has a split keyboard which I am trying to get to grips with.. The phone version is great.

hey guys - I use the phone version and I LOVE it. I installed the free trial on my prime just now but it doesn't pick up what I'm typing. If I'm typing quickly, it skips letters unless I slow down. Do any of you have this issue? It makes it impossible to type on!
Gonna try an uninstall/reinstall real quick.
edit: no go might just give up on this
I like SwiftKey Tablet X.. Works great and like the word prediction and split keybord.
Haven't had any problems. You with problem have you download the correct one? and have you tried to type in different apps/place so there isn't the program you uses that make the SwiftKey to perform bad.

No I dont have this problem but i do not do much typing where i am speed typing. My biggest gripe, which is not the keyboards fault, is the autp rotation is too sensitive. Many times i am typing something slightly move the screen and rotates and i lose my spot or completely lose what i'm typing because i hit the back button.
On my phone (Desire with CM7) I use and love Swype. I understand that an ICS-compatible version will be available at the end of January. That said, I can see that it won't be as neat on the Prime's form factor. We'll see.
In the mean while I'm using Thumb Keyboard 4, on the recommendation of another thread on this forum. Current view: the best of the bunch; fairly good but has some flaws (e.g. doesn't auto-capitalise "I", no visible key for a comma; auto-complete/correct doesn't feel quite as smooth as I'd like). Also doesn't suit my fat fingers
In short I really miss Swype, but fear that it won't be quite as good as on my phone, particularly in landscape.

I wholeheartedly agree
It's the best keyboard I've used. Swype and the likes aren't very efficient on tablets.
I'm loving thumb keyboard as well. I even started using it over HTC ime on my phone, which I have used for a year and a half on my Droid X, t bolt, and bionic.
I am not the developer of thumb keyboard and i have every app mentioned here and then some. Hands down thumb keyboard for tablets. Not even close. Having the options for split keyboard and for a half screen keyboard for when you are walking around cradling the tablet with one hand and typing with the other is the greatest. No other feature can be more valuable.

First of all let me start off by saying that I was deeply disappointed with the performance of the Lapdock on the stock Gingerbread ROM. The idea was great in principle, but it just didn't translate to a good or even satisfactory user experience. The entire device was very sluggish and I quickly regretted my purchase.
However, after flashing the leaked ICS ROM, I was encouraged to see the Motorola has scrapped the dual environment of a Firefox/Smartphone hybrid and went with something that makes much more sense; a Tablet/Smartphone environment. Apps load in their default smartphone resolution, but with the click of a button, you can switch to much higher resolution Tablet view. Credit this to ICS.
Gone are the long periods of waiting for the simplest of webpages to load. Gone are the out of memory errors. Gone is the sluggishness of navigating through simple menus. I actually enjoyed using the Lapdock today for the first time since I purchased it. Sure the lack of Firefox closes some Internet doors, but let's be honest, with the slow performance of the browser...who was watching Hulu anyway? Even full screen YouTube crawled on 4g.
I will post again with more thoughts after I get a chance to spend more time with it over the weekend. But Cheers Moto, way to see that your initial idea was a bust and calling an audible.

I'm using the 100. But save for a few hardware differences, the two model perform basically the same.

Agreed. The only thing the 500 has over the 14" screen and a webcam.
I actually prefer the compact size and light weight (2.2lbs). Also a 10.1 screen is plenty big enough for me.

Wish I'd read the OP's post before I returned my lapdock 500 for the same complaints he had. Ended up getting an ATP to replace it.
Well even then, i hate the idea because i use the lap dock as a student. The sound is constantly giving me issues and it is definitively Webtop 3.0 because i never had sound issue with the old webtop. The issue being the sound cracking system wide, not just music. I have to reset the lap dock and from 'hit or miss' i get it working. Also office on android is awful. I have used the Onlive Dekstop app and it doesn't fit the resolution of Webtop 3.0 so pretty useless and clicking on the screen doesn't correspond to the desktop displayed, have to guess where to click. and finally i have spend hefty amounts on 3 different office apps for android all of which have turned out sluggish and useless when it comes to making your own document / spreadsheet. Also when you disconnect your phone the screen glitches, constantly flickering for a while until rebooted. in my opinion, lap dock plus ICS = fail. I hope ubuntu for android releases soon!
Where is this ICS leak you are using?
I just ordered the lapdock and wasn't quite sure on the speed since there isn't a lot of reviews or anything for it. I mainly bought it so I can have a full sized keyboard and bigger screen size for watching tv/movies while not at home and didn't feel like spending a few more hundred just for a laptop I would hardly use.
ubuntu for android will still suck. and the real ubuntu will only be released on devices that they put it on. so razr will not get the ubuntu from the distributor. I bet that the ics tablet layout will be the norm on all devices when universal docks are released. I cant wait until moto releases a tablet style dock like the padphone. it has to be coming, and I will definitely purchase it. I am using a modified atrix dock and it lacks multitouch on the mouse, but I am loving it. The ics webtop is in beta, so I expect this to get better as it is updated. and "hefty" is kind of ridiculous considering that the real office is a few hundred dollars.
Really considering picking up a lapdock since they are only $60 right now. Just not sure how much use it will actually get.
I picked up the Atrix version for my razr. Wish it had multitouch on the track pad. I modded it for auxiliary output. Besides that, with ics the webtop beta is amazing. This should be the default with any device eventually. Hopefully they release a tablet dock, then the RAZR will be upgraded to the functionality of the padphone. Seriously check it out if you can the phone apps that have corresponding tablet apps can be switched to run as the tablet mode when running. Then it will automatically switch back and forth when docking and going back to phone.

IMO, worth it at $70, not worth it at $200 (which is current pricing for the lapdock 100). Works great for me and I'm on the old version, better than I expected in fact. Looking forward to the ICS version as I think that will be even better but it works well enough as-is to not be worth messing with a leaked version.

Anyone running webtop 3.0 care to say how netflix runs? In 2.0 it crashes after the video is done or if you go back to the netflix queue.

Anyone else notice that touch input seems to be very delayed on this. Like it you swipe it doesn't keep up with your finger nearly as well as my galaxy nexus or nexus 7 does. Not refering the choppiness, refering the this input lag the nexus 10 has. It very frustrating and its really bad.

Absolutely zero finger lag here. Is the only issue when you're browsing the web and trying to scroll? Chrome and Dolphin had some pretty major 'finger lag' for me. Ocean has none. Absolutely zero. If you're only experiencing this lag in web browsing, try Ocean !
Only response lag I see is when browsing in Dolphin. Only issue I have with the browser at this point. Rendering and loading are still very fast. Fastest I've seen on Android.
There's definitely input lag on my Nexus 10 too. It scrolls smoothly (mostly) but the screen doesn't keep up your finger when you scroll quickly. Scrolling doesn't feel as snappy and immediate as it does on my S3. I've watched a couple of video reviews where this has been commented on, and it's particularly noticeable when compared with an iPad. Its not bad enough for me to want to send the device back, but it's there.
No noticeable lag on mine.
Are you running the stock launcher or nova/apex etc? I found anything other than stock gave homescreen lag

Try run and test it without a screen protector, some of these so call "screen protector" really degrade the user experience of devices.
Huge amount if finger lag is experienced with many PDF reading apps when I try to read mags. Adobe reader, ezpdf, moon reader...all lag, just to name a few.
THe chrome lags, it lags on every device out there and needs a lot of work. There is no input lag anywhere else for me on this device.
I have it in the aosp browser as well and the home screens. Its smooth. Its just the input is delayed.

I tested this through Chrome - Dolphin and Ocean with the new Google News tablet website.
Chrome - Lagged tremendously on the news.google.com site to the point there are 2 second freezes before moving. Works fine on Reddit.com and XDA (noticeable at slightly at times)
Dolphin - Significantly less lag but still noticeable at times. No lag on any other website
Ocean - I could not get the tablet version of news.google.com to work, any idea how? It's got Android set up as its client so it definitely sees it as mobile... No lag on any other website.
The new Google News website is pretty awesome.
There is input lag on nexus 7 aosp browser. I click on something in google and it doesnt work until i double tap to zoom in then zoom out and text kinda reflows and then allows me to click on the links. Version 4.2.1

What I mean by lag in this thread is the finger input itself is delayed. Scroll and watch how it trails behind your finger by so much. Its always like a .25 to .5 seconds behind.

I feel particularly sensitive to input lag. Ever since I switched from my iPhone 4S I can't seem to ignore it.
I have both a Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 and input lag seems about the same on both of them to me. Not everyone seems to notice it when I show them though but it's definitely a jarring experience for me every now and then.
I feel as if it's like FPS gaming input delay. When there's minimal delay, it feels like the game is just an extension of your body. If there's a decent delay it makes usage a bit annoying sometimes. Totally usable, awesome features but just wish they'd have a look into this problem with project butter.

I actually think this is one aspect that got worse with project butter. Specifically the smoothing of finger input applied. Before it used to use the raw finger input. Now it adds steps in between two points and that causes some of the delay.

I am experiencing a similar issue with my nexus 10, there is a 1/2 second touch response delay. So it is almost impossible to play any game such as pinball. I have tried many difference apps, so it wasn't app's issue.
For some reason the touch keyboard work perfect fine!
I just requested a replacement from google. Hopefully it is just isolated issue.
