Asus EEE Pad Transformer TF101 -> Camera Green Screen / Choppy / Jitter - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I hope someone can help out
So I'm running the US 8.2.3.9 because I downgraded from 8.6 (honeycomb 3.2) in order to root my eee pad with the CWM Blob v5. Why did I do this?
Well, I had used the Prime 1.6 version and CWM before to root my pad and it was working great until I noticed that my camera app would load up with a black, empty screen when using the front facing camera. The rear camera works great, the front facing just didn't do anything.
So I dug around the forums and saw that some people were saying "Well, the camera breaks when you root the pad a certain way" so I dug further and saw some hope with the ADB style root using Blob V5. So I downgraded to 8.2.3.9, rooted with ADB, used Blob V5, no problems.
However, now my front facing camera does one of two things: Total green screen and that's it. Or it will display what the rear camera shows but upside down and in sections, all choppy and jittery.
Does anyone have any solutions? Any help? Anything at all???
I called Asus and they, of course, want me to RMA it but I have a feeling it's software, not hardware, and I'd rather not mail the darn thing in.
Any help would be much appreciated

Stylus not working on part of the screen

hey,
i bought a stylus to take notes on the transformer but it's not working on the hole screen.
i have attached a screenshot for demonstration.
does someone have an explanation for this phenomenon?
EDIT:
i just wanted to prove it works perfectly with fingers, but i found out it doesn'!
see the screenshot draw_thumb.jpg, i actually wanted to draw straight lines and one circle.
btw, his is the same in ubuntu and android!
EDIT2:
updated screenshot
EDIT3:
i restored everything to stock, and like i was afraid the problem persists.
i have to return it.
Looks like some sort of grounding issue. I know the Evo 4G had issues like that on its earlier 2.1 versions. If you hold the tablet in your hands and try to use the stylus on the bottom half of the screen does it still not register?
i retried it, and it really seems to be a dead-part in the touchscreen
is there any chance this is a software issue?

.21 Broken Camera

After about 5 shots my camera goes all green and blurry, a reboot fixes it then it starts again.
Soft and factory resets don't seem to cure it, anyone else getting this?
To clarify:
1: Boot Prime
2: Take Photos, Watch video for hours all is fine
3: 6/7th Picture screen begins to tear massively while taking them
4: Pictures are fine, screen in general is fine
5: Camera app is constantly tearing, video playback is tearing.
6: Reboot Prime
7: Goto 2
It seems more likely to happen if Im taking pictures of moving things, I can sit and photograph a wall for ages, try something moving and then it seems to kick in.
I don't know first hand but I scan the fourms alot and green camera = hardware failure. I heard it has nothing to do with flashing roms and anything of that sort. Green camera cannot be fixed.
I saw some threads related to camera problems. Then I saw this one a decided to take a picture. After I took it my camera view is all screen tearing. Its very bad. But it must be software because when i take the picture its a normal picture.

Yeah its not as green as my original comment, I guess the green was an exaggeration of the green in the photos.
It is akin to extremely bad tearing though, once it occurs the effect carries over into any videos i watch too.
Reboot makes it go away but then its back a dozen or so pictures later.
this is definitely a hardware problem mine stopped working. had to go to best buy where they swiped it for a new one and the last one instock in this part of the state.. ridiculous no wonder asus has sold so few there impossible to come by

I'm pretty sure it can't be a hardware problem due to the way it happens.
7: Goto 2
If it was hardware failure why would reboots fix it for a certain amount of time, the pictures themselves be fine and absolutely nothing else cause this issue until I've taken a few pictures?
Same issue here and it did happen strictly after .21 update. Pics and videos are extremely noisy and blury as if they were all taken in extremely dark conditions.

Check that your ISO setting is not too high. 100-400 is normal. Could also be white balance setting.
I could not reproduce with .21 on mine.
I have the same problem with mine after the. 21 update. Green with static with the rear camera but if I set it to the front facing camera it is fine

same here - rear facing looks like screen shot below but front facing works fine. I'm afraid this is hardware, other than it worked fine before .21.
any thoughts?

Yours is for sure a bad camera module that is a hardware fix only. Mine did the same thing. Grrr... the problems with this thing are freaking ridiculous!!!!

Yes, it is a hardware problem. I had the same and I sent it back to Asus for repair 3 weeks ago. They decided to send me a cheque for a buyback instead.
I am now waiting for the cheque to come. May be you should send yours back too.

Thread for problems/failures (not including GPS or WiFi)

I know we're sick to death of the GPS and WiFi issues and I think we're all in agreement that we're stuck with what we have, like it or not. However, I'm seeing a lot of other problems that are getting onesie posts and it seems to me that a general 'problems' thread would move it all into one place - so the 'I don't want to see any negative discussions of the toy I spent $500 on' crowd will only have one thread to avoid in the future.
So allow me to start. Last week I got my GPS dongle and when I attached it, it worked quite well...
However, a few days later, I found that the backside 8MP camera had failed entirely. When I launch the camera app, it hangs for a few minutes, then comes up with a 'preview' image that's the desktop kind of chopped up and shuffled, but in shades of brilliant green.
If I switch to the front (1.3MP) camera, it works correctly.
I've factory reset it. No change.
I've hard factory reset it. Also no change.
I grabbed the last firmware and reflashed that. Still no change.
So I called Asus and they've RMAed it, so it goes back today.
I have no evidence that there's a relationship between the GPS dongle and the camera failure - so, I won't make one other than to note that that was the only thing I've stuck into my Prime in the last week. Could just be a coincidence.
Very frustrating nonetheless. It's like most all the tech I bought around Christmas is failing and going away for a month or more to repair.
Sorry to hear your toys aren't being so fun
The camera thing is a little unsettling. I don't use my tab to take a lot of pics, but I sure would be peeved if it went out. I take it your bootloader is still locked? Were you rooted? Can you get it to work again by putting pressure on the backplate around the camera?
see: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1444084 for a similar thread
Tried that already... mod closed it. It is really time to sticky the thread mentioned above!!-- that is if the op would update it.

I use mine to video meetings and presentations... it runs for almost an hour per chunk and the battery can record about 8 hours with the dock.
I've not unlocked mine, so it's pure Asus ROM.
I tried pressure to see if I could get the GPS to work (didn't), and now that you've mentioned it - I hope that's not what buggered the camera.. but alas, no - I didn't try that as a fix for the camera.
It's off to Asus RMA limbo now... so I can't check it.

I did read that thread - but it was more for known issues... I was hoping to focus on other less common 'real world' failures and problems... like the camera failing, or someone trying to hang a device on the USB.
Believe me, given how short tempered and touchy some of the people here are to anything even remotely negative, I sat and thought hard about even considering posting this... but the camera failing right after attaching the GPS dongle struck me as kind of important...
Diamondback has not closed this thread and actually referenced it when closing another thread like it. If this is where we can keep a list of known issues, THEN GREAT! Can I get you to add some issues to the list?
Potential issues:
- Sod (sleep of death)- device will not wake up when power button is pressed. (reported more of an issue on firmware prior to .21 but still seen intermittently)
- Browser wait or force close- Web browser seems to offer you the option to wait or force close frequently, wait usually allows the page to load.
- Heavy 3D games crash- Issue seems worse after .21 update, frequent force close and outright crash when playing T3 optimized games, sometimes reboot.
- Camera freeze- when completing a video recording the camera can freeze and ask to FC or just stop responding to any input.
- Input freeze while download/install- issue occurs when installing or downloading in the background where you are unable to press any buttons including the home or back.
- Screen Mura- Many users report dark/light patches in their LCD, this seems to be common and some users are just now noticing the issue.
- Cracked Screen- This is an interesting one, many claiming that the dock is causing it and some have even resorted to creating their own bumpers to prevent the prime's screen from touching the dock. Some have had it crack just by picking up the tablet itself. Some claim it is the pressure of holding it by a corner and cleaning the screen while holding.
- Digitizer inaccuracy- This is the complaint "I can't draw a diagonal line without it going all wavy on me!" It is an actual issue and although there are users reporting settings that allow it to work properly, the default configuration will leave anyone who just opens it up and tries to draw an "X" scratching their heads.
- Device fit/finish issues- Some users report bezel separation and some report that light pressure near the camera increases wifi signal.
- Sound issues- User reports of audio dropping out all together until reboot is performed.
Having 6 primes go through my hands since January from B-C3 serial numbers, I have seen the majority of these issues first hand and can confirm that some devices seem to have more of these than others, but still have yet to find one that suffers from none of these issues.
Having serious issues since .21 with game reboots. Seems I can't play any of the games with heavy graphics to work properly. It's driving me crazy. Do we have any fixes? I'd like to be able to play the games I've spent money on for longer than 10 minutes without the entire game crashing.

I get this issue frequently also, it seems to me that they work better after a fresh reboot. I sometimes launch a game and it will work for about 10 min like you said, then freeze or graphics corruption. I reboot the prime and then it seems to play fine for as long as I want to, but if I start launching other apps before playing the game, it does the same 10 min, then needs reboot. Demandarin said that there was an update coming soon that will address the issue but that was almost a month ago. Have not seen any updates from Gary from asus either?!?!?!?
I would also like to be able to play my games with no issues. WHEN WILL THIS MADNESS END?!?!

[MOD][Custom Build Prop] Increase Overall Performance & Battery Life of PRIME
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1647357
You will have to be rooted since you will be altering/adding to build.prop. I did read somewhere in the OP about being able to do it even if you are not rooted.
Since I did this mod my Prime is even more responsive and fast. All the games I've had issues with are no longer issues. Or just wait for the update. I here that the fix will be in the coming update as well

Calm down lol. I know everyone is so accustomed to having there updates every week we are somewhat spoiled in a sense. I would rather they take there time then put out a solid update and make sure it actually fixes and have a positive experience from it.

Diamondback told me to post here:
After 5 months of ownership, I regret having dropped so much...
...money on a tablet that Asus clearly didn't give a crap about. For $600, you can get a fast processor, thin and light tablet, bright screen AND:
- an ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE touchscreen digitizer (seriously, my kid's Toshiba Thrive 10" (which came out a year or so before) has a gorgeous digitizer, and the TF201 has a piece of junk bottom of the barrel. Touch-Screen Tune Up can't even help it. You cannot make a straight line for your life. you can't make a nice continuous curve at all, it's pathetically low resolution. At first I was frustrated because after I noticed things were crummy, I went to BestBuy to try it on the TF101, Thrive, and Xoom, and the TF101 still had issues, Xoom was ok, and the Thrive was the best. For a product that cost half as much as the TF201, it has an infinitely better digitizer)
- an exposed MicroSD card while in its slot, so it's nice and easy to accidentally bump it and pop it out.
- Nearly Zero accessory availability (they are always out of stock on chargers, cables, whatever)
- An all metal case that does indeed kill radio signals (who was the genius that came up with that one)
Ok, so the main issue is the terrible digitizer. Even when i'm scrolling up and down on a webpage, i see the screen jump every centimeter or so as my finger reaches a new digitizer point. It is a joke. The most important piece of hardware on a TOUCH device is the TOUCHSCREEN and it is easily the worst touchscreen on any touch device i've seen and it happens to be on the most expensive touch device i've ever seen. That's what really ticks me off. If I paid 100 bucks for it I wouldn't care so much since I would expect cheap parts, but for $600 I do not expect cheap parts.
And within a couple months of it's release they already announced the replacement 700 tablet, with the main changes being a higher res screen and a plastic port for radios to communicate. Nice going Asus. Your other products might be solid. You blew it on the TF201. I'd like to see how the 200$ Nexus 7 is with respect to the digitizer. for 1/3 of the price of the TF201, did asus use a crappy digitizer with it too??
My kid's first gen tablet has a top of the line digitizer and the one that cost over half a grand has one that looks like it came off a palm pilot.
/end rant/
ugh... i hate getting ripped of, and i hate incompetence.
Yea there are positive things about the tablet, there is a whole thread about that. But this really upsets me. When you buy flagship and literally state-of-the-art stuff, that's what you expect. Maybe I shouldn't have bought my son's $250 dollar tablet, then i wouldn't have known how badly Asus ripped of their customers on their $600 tablet.

So much for that hope!!.. still no freakin fix with .28!
and I agree, the digitizer is garbage! My wife refuses to take notes on it because of the "diagonal line issue" where you can not get a diagonal line that is actually straight, no matter how hard you try!

Anyone have both a TF101 and a TFP?

Does anyone have both the TF 101 and the prime? I had gotten a replacement from Asus, and I noticed the screen would wash out a lot more on an angle compared to my TF 101, So asus replaced it (the first replacement was a C30 and they replaced it with a C20 which actually has better wifi range than the C30 did) And I noticed again that the screen would wash out more when held on an angle than the TF 101 did. Now I dont think I got two primes with the same exact issue so now I'm thinking that maybe its just the way the TFP LCD panel is. So I was wondering if someone that has both a TF101 and a Prime if they can do a side by side and let me know. Put the same wallpaper on both devices, and also set the brightness to the same on both devices(I set them both to max, with IPS+ off on the prime). Does the prime get more washed out when held on an angle compared to the TF101?
Thanks in advance
Put the Prime in Performance Mode and then re-do your testing.
Its an auto contrast feature of the tegra 3. Seems to happen more in lower power modes. Search for contrast on this forum there posts about it but its a feature not a bug. Higher brightness and super ips mode are also ways to reduce it from happening.
Oh yea and the 101 didnt have this feature.

Thanks, I was looking at that but wasnt sure if it was the same issue. I do notice the TFP washes out a lot more on an angle even when in performance mode. Since I got two replacements that were like this I'm thinking more its just the way it was made. When asus sent me the first replacement and I noticed it(I dont think I noticed it on my original TFP) I took a video of it washing out more compared to the tf101 when viewed on an angle. I'm pretty disappointed.. I have never seen an IPS screen wash out like that. It washes out on an angle more than my HTC Evo View(flyer) and that's not even an ips or slcd screen
Here are the links of the videos of the first replacement they sent me. This new replacement washes out the same way on an angle
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdQIbLpCLj4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_SIoyhUEVs
I have both, and don't notice any difference except the 201's screen is much sharper and way brighter. I hack the 101 with revolver, and have left the 201 stock. Just got the GPS kit, and now get more sats with the 201 indoors! Too bad the GPS kit doesn't have a power jack. My 201 is a BCOKAS.
If those videos are accurately showing what you're seeing with the device in-person, then I would exchange the unit again. Mine looks nothing like that. Like others have said, the viewing angles on my TF201 are just as good as on my TF101. I'd say the Prime's screen is an improvement in every way, and I thought the original Transformer had a very nice screen.
What you are seeing is Light Bleed, you can search in XDA how to fix it yourself (you have to open your Prime) or return it to Asus. That is not how the screen should look.

Yeah, thats the way it looks in person. I really doubt asus will replace it a 3rd time... I'm waiting to hear back from Hai Trat. I expected the viewing angles to be the same as well. when I wish I could remember if my first unit washed out.. I think I was too anal about the dead pixels it had to notice if that one washed out. But after getting the 1st replacement and the 2nd and both washed out like that and both were different batches (first replacement was a C3, 2nd was a C2) I figured maybe it was normal. Guess not..

Nope, it's not light bleed. That unit does have some but the video shows it correctly, when viewed on an angle the whole screen clouds and washes out. And this is the 2nd one that has done this. My tf101 has some light bleed and doesnt do that at all. This 2nd replacement I have (the video is of the 1st one) the backlight bleeding isnt as bad and it still washes out like that on an angle.
Hmmm....Now that I do a direct side-by-side...in a dark room, with dark backgrounds on both tablets...I do see more of that "glow" that you're showing in your videos. The image is still crisp, but there is a distinct white-out, glow kinda thing going on. Maybe not quite as pronounced as your video, but that could just be lighting, camera, etc.
I probably wouldn't have noticed without doing the side by side video to see if I could show you how mine was OK, lol. LIke I said, the image and colors are still crisp, but there is a bit of that glow over the image.
I almost wonder if it isn't the oleophobic coating refracting the light. It's definitely not just general backlight bleed. My Galaxy Nexus (which also has an oleophobic coating of some kind) doesn't seem to exhibit the same off-axis behavior, but the screen is OLED, is much smaller, etc, so it's hard to make a direct comparison.
Your videos did seem pretty pronounced though. At this point I can't comfortably say one way or the other. I still think my screen looks great. I guess you just have to figure out if you're satisfied or not. In comparison to my TF101, I'd pick my Prime's screen every time.

Need help with green camera problem

So my prime has that green camera problem a lot of us are getting. The screen on my prime is popping out where the camera is. It was already popped out when I first bought it in 2012 of February. It's not until now my camera isnt working, and all it shows is green bars and purple bars then crashes the app. I've tried the pinching method. It works, but I have to pinch it pretty hard, but hard to take pictures. I got a clip to pinch it for me, kind of works. If I move to fast or take a picture in portrait, I might see purple bars and it will crash if unlucky.
I use the camera a lot on my prime. It has an amazing camera and I use it as my main camera when going out.I'm thinking about opening my Prime and try to fix the camera using some methods people posted on XDA. I;m just scared I'll mess up my prime while opening. I sent ASUS an email, even tho my bootloader is unlocked and likely they won't RMA it, plus its been a while, and prob lost warranty.
Just wondering any other ideas trying to fix my camera without opening it yet. Thank you~! .
