[Q] Any news on accessing SD card SGT 10.1 - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone know if there are any Apps or ROMS that allow access to SD card on the Galaxy Tab 10.1?
Im using DropBox at the moment but it takes hours to upload music/films.
I know Kies is an option, but it is not registering my device due to the ROM I am running.
Any help will be appreciates.

If you are running Windows then load the Samsung USB driver and it will mount as a USB drive. I believe for that to work you need debugging off (I could have this backwards though).
The driver is in this download along with all the files needed to root the device
http://www.thedroiddemos.com/downloads/gtab/root.zip

i'm using the USB adaptor and FAT 32 memory sticks to get my data onto the tab. It's worked fine for me, not as easy as syncing with itunes and iphone but it works simply enough.
Kies is a joke. I managed to get some pics onto my tab, but they were all scrambled. It wouldn't find any video's to transfer. WIFI explorer didn't work for me either but I'm glad the USB adaptor worked for me and it's a hell of a lot quicker than WIFI.

'TCommander' - Worked a Treat. Thank you

A good alternative is using ES File Explorer and adding other computers on your home wifi network. Then you can browse files from your computer(s) from your Tab.

First I used the SD adaptor but the speed is poor, but far better as wi-fi. Now I use a HDD via usb-adaptor and keep my files on the HDD. Copy big files to the tab is a nightmare imo.

I have internet connection BUT no access!? -- SOLVED

SOLVED -- Pilot Error: CFIG -- ref' post at bottom
An Amazon/Woot! G-tablet arrived yesterday, and I'm struggling to learn it as I have NO smart-phone (nor, obv., Android) experience. (I've 44 years of mostly UNIX computers, and I've been networking since dARPAnet days.)
From the start, I was able to CONNECT to my house Wireless router (and get an assigned IP#) BUT nothing that "should"[?] connect to the Internet did: the browser couldn't pull up Google, BBC.com, etc. and the email s/w didn't connect to my gmail acct.
I didn't let that bother me as the Big Goal was to load GingerBread, which I did: Android 2.3.3 (Kernel Version 2.6.32.36-aosp a.k.a. "G_Harmony_Gingerbreadv2.3.3"). Also loaded CWM and GAPPS. 'Took a long time to get that installation process right, but everything seems stable EXCEPT I still CONNECT to my wireless router but cannot get any program to interact with the Internet.
Any suggestions as to HOW to debug or fix this?
Android remains a puzzle to me; I don't grasp its organization and management:
I haven't figured out how to delete a Music file yet! (Once 'did -something- that momentarily displayed a garbage can, but haven't been able to reproduce that.)
I have a 32GB SD card which the Tablet acknowledges, but I haven't ever "seen" it over the USB connection (to Windows 7), not have I seen any Android tools to display/access it. Is it mounted on a UNIX-like directory? Or is it Invisible as an entity?
The #$%^'ing beast disconnected during my download of several books-on-CD (rip'd to MP3's) and now says the SC card is messed up... so I guess I have to erase it and download the data again... hoping it won't disconnect once more.
'Guess it's time to order a book on Android... sigh. If there are any online Primers you'd recommend, I'd appreciate a link!
Thanks, John
_______________
Edit: PS -- Erasing the SD card didn't fix the problem: I still get "an error was encountered on your SD card" when I go to the Music player. 'Guess that means using CWM to format something. More sighs....
_______________
Edit2: PPS -- Yet re-booting restored the Music files... however Windows 7 continues to think the tablet's "drive" needs an error scan/repair. O grief....
Do you have a file explorer installed? That wold easily let you delete and move files.
Your micro SD will not be detected by your computer. You will need to mount your device to the PC and load files onto internal SD then move them to the micro SD with a file explorer. Or you can get a usb SD reader and load them directly.
Do you have wpa or any other encryption running on your wifi? Different roms have trouble with certain protections. I suggest setting your router to accept only preset mac addresses you approve.
I might have disconnected with screen timeout. Set screen to never time out under settings.
Does your rom indicate internal mem as emmc or SD? Some are SD for internal and SD 2 for micro SD.

I knew FE apps existed, but presumed there was SOME way to delete w/o them. And... since the beast won't communicate to the internet I have to find another way to load apps (via my W7 computer). [I've used Win7 to delete tablet files over the USB port -- gack... that's a nasty method.]

I have a PC-attached SDHC reader and earlier looked at the SD card that way. However, I'm not sure what I can DO with data I load onto the SD card since I haven't been able to understand in what ways Android makes use of that SD card. [For example: if I placed a root-dir directory of Music on the card, would Android merge that with the internal Music files?]

I have some encryption, perhaps WPA, but the Android wouldn't declare that it has a Connection if it hadn't properly matched the security methods on the router. [I vaguely recall seeing the tablet flash a box with the protocol details it found the router using.]
Very frustrating. I expected a more intuitive structure to Android, and fewer problems. I bought this for a trip I'm taking on Friday, but it looks like I won't have email and browsing on that trip.
Most roms have FE apps installed but I'm guessing the barebones GB doesn't.
Have you tried opening your wifi so no password is needed just to see if its a tab flaw in the wifi antenna?
Music players vary. Stock, no. Power AMP yes. With power amp and some free apps you can set the directorys they search for music in.
GB is nice but it is still very fresh and the kinks are still getting workred out in the version for Gtab. There still isn't drivers to enable hardware acceleration. I would seriously recommend vegan b5.1.1 or the clemsyn/calculin rom. Both are super stable and very streamlined. And both are fully tested by thousands of other moders. Worth a shot.
Router?

The fact it is connecting to the router leads me to believe you may have a configuration issue on the router. Do you have the router locked to Mac address filtering or restrictions on access? If that is the case, your tab could connect to the router but not the net.

I found where while-on-outlet timeouts could be turned off on the Initial Android (that came on the tablet); I have been unable to find anything which allows more than a 30 minute timeout period on GingerBread.

I'm unsure where you're asking me to find this information: Within a PLUS/POwerOn boot (CWM)? or in the [lame] Storage information under Settings?

I've set nothing fancy on the router beyond basic encryption. I often have friends' computers in here for repairs, and those aren't blocked. Still, opening the router up is an interesting test for manana. Friday a.m. I have to be up and off to the airport around 4am, so I shouldn't be floundering around with this just now!
You wouldn't be able to tell without a file explorer. Just realized that. There has been debate about standard android (emmc/sd) and tablet android (sd/sd2) drive labeling. Didn't know what the newest GB used for labeling drives. It has caused lots of confusion and lead many to accidently format their SD (internal mem ) with cwm.

Just to get it running for your trip you could at least try a froyo rom.

I'm worn out, and have to crash now. Those are good points, and I'll pursue them ASAP.
But I'll pursue snoring just now!
Thanks to all!
Ahhh, a new day... and yesterday's advice to follow up on... and a solution found!
Pilot Error: Controlled Flight Into Terrain [CFIT]
I went to turn off the WPA [or whaddeva] security on the wireless router... and couldn't! Couldn't open the router at the usual 192.168.1.1.
'Did an IPCONFIG and WHOA! Definitely non-standard IP addresses for a home Router/Gateway/etc. Very much like... oh Dang... like Modem-delivered addresses.
Now I recall: just before a recent trip I helped a friend in BudaPest set up a Vulkano link to his mother's ComCast TV service... and to test that it worked from my house I had to directly wire my computer onto the Modem -- Vulkano wouldn't work through my router w/o unknown configuration changes. And I never reconnected the router, nor turned it off, so my tablet was connecting to a disconnected router.
With the router re-cabled, everything works... almost: now the tablet works, but I can't get a stable connection through the WIRED connection to my main computer... the one which was working 15 minutes ago before I re-inserted the router!!! I'm NOT asking for help on that: a few more reboots or a cable change and it will resume working, but for now I've switched to wireless on the computer. [Do't even suggest the most-obvious! I rebooted the modem & switch several times, and the computer as well. But I've now removed Vulkano s/w so maybe that will get the WIRED connection back up after the next reboot.]
Sigh... mea cukpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.
Now, back to packing for Colorado! Thanks again!
Able to connect to Wifi, But no Internet access
Hey guys. I am new to the forum, and I am sorry if this has been solved, but I have benn having a hell of a time trying to figure this out. I just gor my G-tab, and with some help from my friend, we rooted it, installed CW, and installed Vegan Ginger Edition. I have another friend who is running the Vegan 5.1, and he has the same issue. We are in a building that has a preinstalled wireless system. We can see the repeaters, and connect to them, but we are unable to connect to the internet. The system requires a login. Another friend has a Sprint HTC phone and he is unable to get the internet either. Any suggestions of ideas?

[Q] Mac connection, Kies, Video files

I have just picked up a GTab 16gb from PC world, they seem to have stock left despite this ban.
There is a couple of problems I have had already:
I have a MacBook Pro (10.7 Lion) and want to drop some files on to the device. So I installed Kies downloading the latest version from the Samsung website 1.0.0.11081_4. I tried adding some video files to the Kies program. I add a folder, it looks through the folder and then says no video files found!!
Next I though to connect the tab as an external drive. Is this possible?
I know there is wifi transfer apps out there to send files over, but would prefer to do this over cable. Any advice on a way of doing this with a Mac?
Any help is much appreciated
Also I tried connecting with Debugging mode to see if that help. But no success with that either
Also Android File Transfer application doesn't seem to work in normal or debugged mode
This is only way I could transfer files!
My MAC with lion would not connect to the 10.1 wireless or USB. Today on PC World they had an App WIFI File Explorer. Free download crippled and $1.60 Pro version. It is in the Market & Amazon.
I have the pro version and can transfer files wirelessly now. To me it was worth the $ rather than fight with Samsung.
from what I understand, kies doesn't work with lion. snow leopard is the latest OS that it works fairly decent with. And considering the patent wars and rocky relationship, I don't see Samsung really putting any priority in developing support either.
I have the same problem (Lion). To be honest Kies is awful so you're not missing out. I use File Expert to transfer via wifi. Its pretty quick and nice to not have to fiddle with cables.
I hope Samsung stop messing around! iTunes is awful, but Kies is a joke.
Ok glad not just me with problems with Kies on a Mac. It does seem kies is universaly hated.
I have tried a few wireless options, es explorer, ftp server and filezilla which both worked well in transfering the movie files.

Kies does work with Lion - you just need to install an earlier version and then upgrade.
However, whenever I transferred a DivX to my Tab using Kies, there were always playback problems - picture breaking up, artifacts etc. Initially I thought it was a an issue with the tablet itself as they played flawlessly on my Asus TF. However, I tried using a WiFi transfer apps and finally everything clicked into place and I could play the videos correctly.
Regards,
Dave
My experience exactly.
I got Kies on my Mac and then found it was useless.
Wifi transfer of files seems to be the only way to go. Maybe this will improve in the future, but in reality I think wifi transfer will be fine.
Are you sure you you choose the skies in the Setting of your GT before your connecting?
if not, i wonder whether this way can help you:
before you connect your GT to PC, setup your Galaxy Tab for Kies connection following the steps: press the Menu key. In the Menu interface, select Settings>Wireless and network>USB settings>Samsung Kies.
Note: Ensure your USB cable is unplugged.
hope this can help you.
I also have a UK tab and the settings you describe above are not possible. Under wireless and network there are only the following:
Flight mode
Wifi
Wifi settings
Kies Via Wifi (doesn't find Macs)
Bluetooth
Bluetooth settings
VPN

[Q] Best way to file the tab to a SG2 phone

I am trying to find the best way that I can easily access/stream files from my phone to my tablet.
So far I have tried:
- Bluetooth. Too slow
- Kies. Could not connect the devices together after repeated attempts
The phone has wifi direct, but the tablet does not seem to. What android apps offer the best seamless file sharing? I tried bump, did not like it. I suppose if I had the usb adapter I could connect the phone as a mass storage device, but I don't have the adapter yet and I'd like to keep it wireless anyhow.

Websharing is my favorite

Have you tried DropBox? It works great between the home computer, phone and tablet.
'swiFTP FTP Server' to create a local server. use 'andFTP' to connect to that server. both free in the android market
Is it possible to stream with andftp?
I can't see how in the free version but maybe pro does??

I'm a big fan of sugar sync, as you can see from my signature. Just like dropbox, but has more free space and no cap if you get more people referred
i tried it with Samba Filesharing. I was able to find my phone but wasnt able to connect to it. Did it while in Hotspot mode on my phone.

[Q] Questions Before Purchase (Need Advice)

Im over in Afghanistan right now (such fun) and my wife is going to be purchasing me a tablet to use (mainly e-reader, messing around with it etc and send it over here to me. Ive pretty much settled on the Tab at this point. There is no WiFi, however I've got internet on a computer through a LAN. However, Ive been trying to do some research and find out how I can install apps and what not onto it without being on WiFi, and not looking good so far. Know Im going to need to root it and what not (Ive had a ton of droid phones, so familiar with that). Is the only way I'll be able to update/download stuff on here is by loading the APK file onto the Tablet itself via USB? Or is there a tether possibility, having the USB hooked up to the Tab from the computer with internet, and I can use the Tab as if it were on the internet at that time as well. Anyone who could offer some advice on this, I'd appreciate.
Lastly, If I use it as my ereader as well (using the Kindle app), will I not be able to load books on it due to the fact that its not on a wireless network (in other words, can the books be downloaded and loaded onto the tab via syncing after Ive got the Kindle app on?)
Any thoughts/ideas with any of this or workarounds would greatly be appreciated!
It comes with a usb cable, plug it into the computer and it acts like an external drive. Copy files from computer over to tab, and you should be able to open and install them with the tab. I've transferred a few APK files from my PC to my tab and used File Expert to open and install them. I am not rooted, by the way.
Could you get a cheap wireless router to plug into the computer to give yourself wifi?
Unfortunately we cant use wireless routers out here. So really, the only way for me to get anything on it would to be downloading the APK on to the computer, and transfering it that way im assuming. Would I be able to download just the APK for most apps and do it that way, or am I pretty much limited due to the fact that I cant connect directly to the market over wifi. Thanks for the reply.

Mac OS: Android file transfer not working

So I got my SGS3 yesterday and noticed that the Android File Transfer app won't work, which used to work well when I owned a Galaxy Nexus. I tried it on 2 different Macs and it won't work on neither. The app does not recognize the phone being connected.
When I connected it on windows (bootcamp, same Mac) it was recognized, so it's not a hardware fail, it's a software bug.
My Q is, has anybody successfully managed to use the Android File Transfer app together with a Galaxy S3.
Thx, all the help greatly appreciated.
EDIT:
I just tried setting the USB Connection mode to Camera (PTP) and Android File Transfer now sees my phone. Everything is fine.
But, DAMN YOU SAMSUNG, code more carefully!
Thanks! This helped me out as well! Was worried something was wrong with my new phone .

Hi, I am struggling with this problem of AFT not working with samsung S3. Could you elaborate on how and where to make this change in USB setting - is it on the camera or macbook pro?

On your phone, when connected to the AFP program on your mac, you'll see a USB symbol in the notification area. Pull it down and you'll see it says something like 'Connected as media device' and it'll give you options underneath that to change it. Select that and you'll get to a settings page which will allow you to set your phone as a media device ((MTP) or as a camera (PTP) - do the latter and it should work fine.
I have to say, I love this phone but am not overly enamoured with the mac syncing aspect of it. Most apps in the store are flaky at best or don't work at all, TBH. Using the above method, I've managed to get my media over to the phone by dragging/dropping from iTunes and iPhoto.
Problem is, I still can't find a way for my computer to - reliably - see my phone as a camera when I plug it in e.g. invisible to iPhoto and Image capture.
If you find a way around my problem, please post it up. HTH.
get an app called airdroid (xfer via browser) or file expert & use a FTP program to transfer files from your Mac to the S3
I was going to say that it was another way that Apple is trying to boycot Samsung's phones along with all the suing going on lol.

Thanks for that. Had a look at Airdroid and it seems really slick. Pity though, as it has issues with external storage.
Never mind, I'm dragging/dropping stuff from iPhoto/iTunes to folders which I the keep in sync with CheetahSync. It's all a bit inelegant, but it does the job for now.
hey guys, i'm having an issue with the file transfer. Did what the OP stated above and I can see both internal memory and SD, but when i tried to drag and drop from Finder it is giving me an error, saying my screen is locked (even when it isn't) and asking me to reconnect. anyone else have this problem? for now i'm transferring using File Explorer but its a pain in the ass. thanks!
EDIT: really weird, first file i tried was an mp3 and it kept giving me an error, now i'm moving an avi and looks like its working. apologies
Still having trouble
I'm having serious trouble with AFT and tried what's been suggested here but it's still not working for me.
I've installed AFT on my MacBook (OS X Lion).
All that happens is in all tries is that when I plug in the S3, AFT simply says:
"Could not connect to device
Try reconnecting or restarting your device"
I tried both with no luck. I tried it with selecting Camera (PTP) mode and then with Media device (MTP) mode. No luck. I tried both with and without "USB debugging" selected. No luck. I tried reinstalling AFT. No luck. Restarting my MacBook. No luck.
Any ideas?

Just a heads up. Installing AFT on my macbook air caused my usb to Ethernet dongles to stop working. AFT had to be removed to fix them. Applecare are aware and IIRC blame Google.

You're right as it doesn't seem to recognise the S3 at all when on MTP but AFT starts up each time I select PTP (i.e. my Mac recognises it when in the Camera mode) but I just end up getting the "Could not connect to device, Try reconnecting or restarting your device" message.
Strangely enough AFT needs the phone to be in camera mode to work.
But KIES for OSX needs the phone to be in MTP mode. I couldnt get wireless kies to work (but didnt try all that hard either)
well we've found another reason never to buy a mac
i dont have an s3 but i was googling this issue, i havent got a samsung device on ics working on my mac yet, my tf101 tablet just decided to work today after numerous errors about it not being connected.
AFT used to work, no longer does
Hi
I had this problem when I just got my Galaxy S3 at the end of May, and switching the connection mode to camera (ptp) did the trick. Now, however, regardless of the connection type I have chosen or whether or not I have enabled debugging, I cannot use AFT. At no point does it recognize my device, it just keeps telling me "No Android device found. Please connect your Android device with a USB cable to get started." I have reinstalled the program and still no luck.
Further info: I'm running 10.7.4 on an early 2011 15 inch MacBook Pro

Yeah, MTP never worked for me on my Macbook, while PTP worked as a workaround until LFB (and later). With LFB changing to PTP (by default) pops up Image Capture, which, if everything worked as it should, is what you'd expect I suppose. The problem is that Image Capture doesn't find any pictures on the device even though it recognises that an I9300 is connected - and Android File Manager now doesn't work in either MTP or PTP mode.
So I am not the only one not being able to transfer files using AFT? Or has someone figured it out?
Well I run KIES now and open the file browser that way. The only way I could make work on OSX. On windows I have no problems just connecting it and accessing.
