Jittery screen ...hardware or ROM? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello... I am having issues with my screen being unresponsive...jittery and buggy. It never used to be like this...but it has been as of late... when trying to type on the keyboard...it keeps pressing "q" non stop as if a ghost were doing it... and anything I type get interrupted with other letters being typed... ? Just random screen weirdness. Don't know if its the hardware or the rom I have which is Alien 4. I have re installed rom and same thing... I have removed the rom and ran my phone on stock and it still did it. Anyone else having the same issues? Should I send my phone in for warranty while I can?

Looks like your digitizer is dying. Clean your screen thoroughly and reboot.

Atrix Freeze and Lag
Its not your hardware I am having the same problem and this all occured after the gingerbread update. If you check the droid boards there also seeing the same issue after the update. When I was on Froyo it worked perfect but every since the update random screen lag keyboard starts typing the Q instead of the letter that I am pressing. I have read board after board and everybody is complaining about this I am still looking for that magic fix. Also once I reboot everything is fine then in day or two it starts happening again. Thanks

K we need to wrap this into one thread. I pointed one thread over to the motorola forums as I have had this issue pre gingerbread.
https://supportforums.motorola.com/thread/48693
but the fact people are seeing this happening more and more when going to 2.3 I wonder if something else is going wrong.
Just a side theory. have you unlocked your bootloader etc if so which version of of the device do you have the d00 or 1100?

Just another thought did u consider having a look at the cpu usage of the device. I had a similar problem yesterday and the cpu usage by Android Media process was continuosly over 60%. Even reset couldnot fix it. Switched to CM7 hence. Maybe try a complete wipe through fastboot (in case u have unlocked the bootloader) and then installing some other rom.
fastboot erase system
fastboot erase userdata
fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase cache
fastboot erase preinstall
fastboot reboot
Or u can reflash the SBF (pudding one if u have unlocked).

Freeze and Lag Issues
Thanks again for the responses the folks at XDA are great with support. I did not unlock the bootloader I was fine with just rooting the phone and again it worked great until gingerbread came out. I also reviewed to see what was happening to the phone when it froze the CPU was running about 30 percent and maybe 20 percent of Ram was being used. So many people are having this issue that I find it hard to believe that it is a hardware issue when gingerbread seems to be causing all types of phones this issue. Again Thank You for Your Help

Thanks for the fastboot instructions but stupid question does that process only apply to a phone with a unlocked bootloader.

Yep do these instructions for unlocked bootloader only. Fastboot instructions touch a lot more than the usual data and cache partitions e.g. boot partition.
It would be safer to use Tenfar's cwm for the locked bootloader scenario to wipe data and cache partitions.

Restore to stock

I'm sorry if the answers to my question have been answered but I can't find them after searching for a few days.
I need to send my Atrix in for a repair or replacement. It is unlocked and rooted running Turl's CM9 right now. Obviously I can't send it back as is, so how should I go about everything?
Flash an SBF, flash a fruitcake rom, or something else that I haven't stumbled upon?
The only threads I could find are from a year ago and so much has changed since then. I just want to be sure I go about this the correct way. And should I go through ATT or Motorola? I know my phone is still under warranty with both.
Thanks for any help! It is much appreciated!
"Always have an exit strategy"
You can flash a fruitcake but the "unlocked" text will remain so you can hope for the best.
Or you can try an SBF (Disclaimer: at your own risk).
How long have you had it? Usually if you have had it for more than 30 days AT&T won't help but if you are still under "warranty" with them I would try AT&T first.
If you can't find a way to return your phone back to stock you can try Motorola, they might just overlook the modifications you have done.... or they might charge you a service fee...... or they might just send the phone back to you. It really depends on who ever is processing your claim and the mood they're in.
Also, please don't start multiple threads on the same topic.

OK thanks. I had read that if I use the Motorola Software Update tool it will erase the "unlocked" text. I don't know how true that is though.
And sorry about the multiple threads, its just annoying not being able to use half my keyboard in portrait. Just was hoping for some quick answers.
Thanks again for the quick response

I had restored a few times to stock.
I do that:
Reboot in fastboot mode and fastboot - w, fastboot erase system, fastboot erase cache, fastboot erase preinstall.
Turn phone off and pull out sim card and sd card.
Reboot in rsd mode (olding vol+ at boot) and flash your sbf with rsd lite.
That's all.

Ok, you don't happen to have a stock sbf file? I can't find one anywhere.
Also, why is it that we shouldn't flash sbf files? It seems that people have success with them but everyone keeps saying not to do that. But I can't find a stock flashable zip and the fruitcake links are dead so sbf seems to be my last resort.
I'm just stuck scratching my head because of all this confusion?

Look in the firmware superthread, in the last pages someone have a link in his sign to a page of many stock sbf files. I found there my updated one.
I always got succes with rsd lite but only with a full wipe with fastboot before it say "pass" at the end. Otherwaise it say to 'manually reboot'.
Don't know why people say "do not use sbf", probably there is a reason, but i think it is the only way to remove the 'Unlocked'
Here links to froyo sbf
and to GingerBread sbf
also you need to delete any folder about apps that need root to work and su folder and anything that presume you have rooted your phone

Depending on what build you are currently on you do not want to "downgrade". So if you are on a Gingerbread build (4.5.91 or 4.5.141) do not flash the Froyo SBF. And probably if you are on the 4.5.141 build (2.3.6), it is not recommended to flash the ".91" build. That is where the issues can occur.
I have also used RSD Lite to flash back to stock (a few times) but always use caution. So, for @scarbutt11, do you happen to remember what build you were on before you unlocked the bootloader and flashed a custom ROM?

Yeah, I was running stock 4.5.91/2.3.4. I'm on a cm9 build now. I'm not sure if that will matter at all for flashing back to GB? I know I tried cm7 to see if it was just cm9 causing the problems, but it seems it is hardware related.

Yeah, it depends on what "Official" build you were last on. Since you were on "4.5.91" then I would just use that SBF. Like someone else mentioned, it is possible to use RSD Lite, just use caution.

[Q] Reset to fully stock

So i purchased an atrix 4g off of eBay, and it has a few Root applications on it, but isn't actually rooted.
The android recovery mode is also broken, i get an android robot with the Attention symbol. Would post a link to one i found on the internet but i cannot since i am under 8 posts.
The phone was on 2.3.6 build # 4.5.141 when i received it. and i have done nothing to it so far.
So maybe someone applied OTA updates and killed the root or something, idk.
in the end the end i would like to root it with some ISC.
So is there anyway i can Reset everything to stock out of the box. Or to fix the problems with recovery?
Also for now it wont really be used as a phone, as i don't have a sim yet.
To cover the basics here let's make sure the phone isn't bootloader unlocked or rooted. To check bootloader, when you boot the phone, does the moto screen say "Unlocked" in top left hand corner of the screen? If not, it isn't. Then for root, check it with the app root checker basic or pro from market. Get back to the thread once you can answer those questions and then I will post something to help you with the getting ics.
Sent from my Atrix with XDA Premium
Both of those come up as a no So no unlocked boot loader and no root
Try this but you know the risks of messing with the phone right??? Read EVERYTHING before you do. Your phone says a different version of firmware than the thread but if you look back in the posts of the thread in the end, it will work. You can also read the Atrix thread stickies.
Edit.... having trouble posting link ... give me sec.
Edit 2....can't post from phone. Let me post it from my computer when I get to the computer in the morning.

Have you flashed a different ROM for the time being to at least have a working phone? Like a blur or cm7 ROM?
Sent from my Atrix with XDA Premium
Thats is what i was going to try next, i havent got to it today.
Are you flashing plugged in? Try flashing the rom without having your phone plugged in.
Also, if you're at the M logo screen, I suggest waiting it out for quite a while. Be patient. I used to think when I flashed roms that I was stuck at M logo, but I just wasn't waiting long enough, especially coming from a full wipe.
Otherwise, try doing a battery pull and then putting it back in and booting it up.
You can also try using Nottachtrix with the installer? I've heard that fixes a lot of people's problems that are getting stuck at logo screen.
well right now it seems that the battery is dead and wont charge....
So im not sure what im gonna do about that
Ok so im installing NottachTrix now will report how it went when done.
Also about leaving it on to boot, i did that for 24 hours, nothing happened
Edit:
It seems to be working so far. The phone is stuck at a charging screen with a battery icon, much more than it was before.

[Q] Atrix will only boot if Honeyatrix is installed

(SOLVED) hello neighbors. I am having an issue... my atrix will only boot if i install honey atrix on it. i have tried many other roms. many different times. i have wiped all data cache partitions, dalvik, battery stats, formatted system, dat, cache. And still i can get nothing to boot besides Honeyatrix rom.
it seems to load them from the zip file ok just wont boot past the unlock dual core screen. i have let it set for 10-20 min to see if it will boot and nothing.
i had recieved this under warranty and it was shipped with the new 2.3.6. 4.5.91 and i rooted and unlocked using the unlock tool v.4.
any help with this would be greatly appreciated
thanks in advance,

your recovery is the problem install rom manager from market and update cwm or try romracer recovery.
Could also be the baseband radio. If that doesn't fix, looks like its time for the dreaded sbf.

I would also use the latest romracer recovery or twrp from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1400641. Also be sure to use appropriate kernel for the rom you are flashing and try the stock clocked kernels first. Good luck.

hmmmm I wondering on this one if his internal might be mal-partitioned.. I had this problem and was cured using mini tool partition wizard. Start off by making sure all's formatted fat 32 primary. Once you're assured of that, format again, fastboot - w and reinstall something like neutrino. Twice for good measure. Boot it , wait 60 seconds, pull battery and reboot. Lemme know bro if that helped..

[Q] HTC One X Plus Stuck In Bootloop ... HELP

So my HTC One X Plus is stuck in bootloop. Here is what happened. I just got the phone and the first thing I did was unlock it. Everything was fine. Next I went to root it using RootBootV5. Here is where the issue came up. At the end of the root process my phone should have loaded the lock screen. Instead it just sat on the White HTC quietly brilliant. Stayed that way for hours.
So i rebooted into bootloader and tried everything I can possibly think of to fix it, Factory Reset, Fastboot Erase Cache, even folloed this tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1609190.
Nothing is working and I don't know what to do. I don't think the phone was successfully rooted so i cant simply flash a new rom. Also recovery is not working, just a black screen.
PLEASE HELP.
You can try to reflash a recovery using fastboot. If you can do that maybe you can flash another rom. Also, wern't you able to wipe cache at all because of the black screen?

Similar issue, details a bit different
Phone: HTC One X+
Carrier: ATT
Rooted: Never, stock phone
Previous Research: I searched the forums and found similar issues, but mostly only for rooted phones, to which this does not apply. I spent at least an hour pouring through various threads and using the fancy advance search. I swear I'm doing my very best to not be TFNG...but, I still haven't found the answer and I'm giving in.
The Problem: Random rebooting
In the last 24 hours this has happened at least 18 times that I've been able to count. It happens when I'm using the phone, and when I'm not using it. It's showing no signs of stopping, and has been seemingly getting worse. Now it's beginning to lag severely through out all apps, has trouble loading my home screen, and in addition, flashes back to home when in an app.
Troubleshooting:
Rebooting
Uninstalling all recently installed aps
Force Stop on all unnecessary apps through Task Manager
Factory Reset
Assumptions:
Likely hardware related and I have to send it back to ATT and get a replacement
Conclusion:
In your time spent in this forum and in all your readings, have you come across a resolution for the issue that isn't "send it back?"
Sincere Thanks for any and all feedback.

Cant access Boot loader HelpPls

After flashing nocturnal Rom and installing apps i experienced a slight overheating and i turned off my phone. I turned it back on and I was unable to access the Rom, recovery, or boot loader. I flashed stock with LGPNST and i re-rooted and unlocked the bootloader. I had the same problem upon rebooting. SO...I can flash through LGPNST stock and root but every time i try the boot loader unlock and reboot my phone has the original problems . I've tried the process a few times with the same results.please help.

It may be helpful to someone else, if you were to explain how you fixed it.
Yes, it would indeed be quite helpful if you could elaborate... because this just happened to me and I'm stumped...
I followed the same exact procedure I've used other times without error...
Except that now, after LGNPST, then root, then freegee... go to restart the phone and it hangs... won't boot up. What gives?
I repeated the process and did a factory reset after LGNPST back to stock, since I noticed (oddly enough) that all my apps were still there after LGNPST (full, to 100%)...
Still no luck...
EDIT-- Can't for the life of me figure this effing thing out. LGNPSTed I don't know how many times... with factory reset, without... I've tried fully relocking and unrooting the device... both through the FreeGee app *and* manually through adb... no error mssgs, double-checked... everything followed to the letter. There's only one constant each time: Once I've re-unlocked the bootloader (either with the app or through adb)... the phone is basically softbricked... once I turn the power off, it is A) not possible to boot into the stock rom, B) not possible to access fastboot menu, and C) not possible to boot into recovery. The only thing it *is* possible to do is get into download mode... and from there I'd just have to LGNPST again, but what's the point, because once I've done that and tried to unlock again, I already know what's coming. Never been this frustrated with a phone before, any help would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT 2-- No luck. LGNPSTed to stock once more, and factory reset, because yet again, all my apps were still intact... idk. Anyways, decided to do some hunting around with adb, and "adb reboot recovery" produced an error screen... the android lying on his back with case open... am I to assume this means there is a problem with my recovery partition that could be causing my difficulties... or would one expect to see this screen when trying to access recovery on the stock phone?

Honestly I don't know how it was resolved. I lgpnsted and rooted and unlocked the bootloader like 5 times.I got into recovery a few times but then got the same problem two more times. The last time I got into recovery I managed to flash a custom kernel and everything was fine from then on. I just don't understand how this problem is caused or even how it is truly fixed.

I had access to stock and I could root it. One thing that bothers me is that when I flash with lgpnst my data isn't erased and I feel like there may be a problem there of whether lgpnst is even taking our phones back to stock completely

Yes, I know, I've had that same thought. I think I've done what you did... LGNPSTing and unlocking etc... but even as I try like hell, I haven't been able to get back into recovery even once.

It's okay, I posted in XsMagical's thread, I'm hoping he can shed some light.
But actually, I'm just glad that I'm not the only one this has happened to...because if this error is reproducible, it can probably be fixed... so that's good. Thanks for your replies!

There have been a small number of phones that will not unlock with standard freegee. They can be unlocked but it is riskier, you would need to talk to Shelnutt in irc.

Our phones successfully unlocked with freegee originally but some error caused us to lose access to the bootloader and corrupt whatever ROM we were on and then cause errors where we could use free gee but run into problems. In my situation the problem was resolved somehow and free gee worked fine afterwards

I'll try and post how I fixed it, but it is recovery related. I'm also working on another way to reset our phones without using LGNPST, but I've been really busy. I'm close though and I believe it will be easier and faster.

I'm still at work but I read most of the post and will try to see if there is a work around

Thank you guys! I'm willing to try anything at this point. I appreciate it. And droidiac... this phone could really use a quick, easy, and reliable way to completely reset back to 100% stock, so that sounds exciting!

Just for the sake of documentation, I made a little log of my most recent attempt at getting back into the fastboot menu... obviously it's convoluted, but hey... sometimes experimentation gets results. This time, however, it did not... still no luck.
LGNPST back to stock
factory reset from settings->backups
run root exploit
restore original backups from first time freegeeing via adb using carrett's method
reboot
full unroot from SU app
factory reset
LGNPST to stock
re-run root exploit
reboot
re-unlock with freegee script (adb)
disconnect cable
reboot
(right here is the failure. after running "power off and reboot" from the power button menu, phone shuts off. it tries to start up, then i get a quick flash of the LG logo, straight to a backlit black screen that hangs indefinitely. only thing possible from here is to enter download mode.)
Back to the drawing board...
Same here

Just for documentation and in case I can help solving this, I am having the same problem, I explain my case with more detail on the FreeGree Thread, but pretty much I am on the same ship as you, I have tried after LGNPST, with and without factory reset, with the Google Play application and with the desktop application, but same result, black screen after restart.
I have a brand new phone, picked it less than a week ago, could LG have changed something? bootloader/recovery partition sizes? something?
I am still within the 14 days period and as much as I like the phone, if I can't bootloader unlock, means I will be stuck on stock ROM, and that is something I don't want... might as well go and change it for a different phone, or sell it and get a nexus 4...
I get same.thing. black screen after freegee. Its two days old. So now what!?

How does this happen from a random stock ROM. I think I was using nocturnals ROM and how was the problem resolved through multiple flashes?
