Is the ASUS Trandformer Prime the only quad core tablet currently available at present or are there others that i don't know about?
I have to say im very disappointed with the Prime, initially i was very excited with the impending release of this tablet the specs and design looked to be absolutely amazing and i was definitely going to get one but having been a keen observer of the ASUS Transformer Prime forums on XDA it's makes for grim reading, most of what im reading are people having multiple problems from GPS to WiFi to random reboots to the tablet freezing, etc, etc, etc i did say a few weeks ago i would give it more time to see if many of these issues were to be resolved but it doesn't appear this has happened so i couldn't justify paying big money for what is essentially a product that will not work the way it should and frankly i think ASUS rushed the release of this due to overwhelming demand whereas i think they should have spend much more time testing and testing to ensure absolutely everything worked 100% the way it should so im very disappointed but i still want a tablet,no real rush am willing to wait maybe 2/3 months but what are my options, i would be looking for something similar specs to the Prime and obviously it would have to be an Android tablet running ICS, i cant see much out there right now to rival the specs of the Prime, does anyone have any recommendations>
Cheers
Maybe I should have asked elsewhere doesn't appear to have provoked much of a response!!

well i dissagree i love my prime and wouldnt trade it for nothing. I have no issues with wifi and the gps is something i dont use on this. I have a phone and navi for that.
its a great tablet and makes any other i have seen slow as a dead turtle.
Plus it is the first android device I have own (5 total) that has gotten updates frequently and with a purpose. I am running ICS natively and the experience is fantabulus!
Anyways, i am sure there will be more and much better coming but for now, its the best on the market!
And its more than a quad core, its a quadcore with a 5th core for all the right reasons. My battery last very long and with this dock, the typing and usage is great. I have the 32gb with a 32gb msd plus i carry a 320 gb hard drive for movies which is accessible from the usb slot!
Anyways good luck buddy

I'm pleased to hear that but reading the Prime forums makes for grim reading, the sheer amount of people having multiple issues is quite staggering and in all honesty ASUS have a lot to answer for, they appeared to rush the release of this before properly testing it (otherwise people wouldn't be having all these issues)
I suppose ill just have to wait until a similar spec tablet comes out but im going to be very wary of just jumping on and buying straight away, im lucky i didn't do that with the Prime or chances are id have sent it back for a refund, im gonna bide my time and read, read, read and make sure before i shell out big bucks that it actually works 100%
i agree, i'm still worried about picking up a Transformer Prime
Hey guys -
Since the Prime has been out for a few months, and it seems like the unlocking tool is out. You guys think it is a good buy to pick one up? My GF has my XOOM and she uses it for school now, and it leaves me tabletless. I heard there were many issues when this device first came out, are the issues still there? Also, is there anything else in the foressable future (1-2 montsh) that will be the
"prime killer". Thanks guys.
I would say go for it. Just buy it from a store where you have a return policy so if you dont like it you can return it.

I would recommend buying one. I know lots of people have had issues but I have tested mine thoroughly, everything works as I would expect and I used it for an overseas holiday with the only issues being app specific problems. I don't think you will see the new Prime out for at least 3-4 months. The new Galaxy tab might be out sooner but that is pure speculation.
There were some people here who had problems. As usual when a new device hits the stores. Happenes to all devices, iphone, galaxy S2, Nexus... Thats how it is with our current production technology.
Most people here are very happy though, including myself. I've not had a single issue since I bought it a month ago. GPS is working, but best lock I was able to get was ~30m. No problem though because i only enabled Gps to test if it works, i will probably never enable it again ;D
Wifi/BT is perfect. The screen is beautiful, the dock is awesome, HDMI out is a blast, everything is smooth, battery life ... it just wont run out of juice man! Would buy it again any day. And with the unlocked bootloader, i'm sure everything will get even better from here on.
There will be no prime killer in next few months. Plus prime only just came out at end of December/early January. PRIME HAS NO EQUAL AND DESTROYS THE COMPETITION
In the next few months I will think so. I'll have expected Samsung to have announced their A15 cored (dual core or quad core doesn't matter, still better than quad core A9) tablets with a really beefy GPU, by then.
Moreover the ipad 3 would have come out already with quad A15 cores and an even better gpu than the sgx 543.
So yeah I'd recommend you hold out.
I will say this though. If you do hold out you're going to be missing out on a sexy tablet that transforms into a netbook.
dont be worried about all the people complaining 90% of people are happy with their prime and the 10% that arent happy with thrs just sit thr nd cry about it go for it and you wont regret it!!!!!!

that's what I was thinking... I know I could always wait for the "next best thing" and I'll always be waiting. However, If there is new tech on the horizon and the tablets are said to be cheaper what's a few months? Although the prime is a sexy beast. I held off initially when I saw complaints, price and what not. I'll keep an eye out.

I've had my prime for over a month now and I use it daily for school and leisure. If you're a student this device is perfect, I've had minor quirks here and there, I've only suffered two lockups/reboots, and my gps works but barely. Otherwise it blows everything else out of its sphere...I could not see myself satisfied with any other tablet at this point (I'm interested in the iPad 3 though to be honest).

Waaa? It's not even about always worrying about what's coming out in the next few months. It's about being smart and buying the next gen/this year hardware. Which is pretty much coming out next month with the ipad 3 and hopefully samsung.
As far as I am concerned quad core A9 is a technologically backwards move by nvidia. To me it's akin to buying a Intel quad core duo in this day and age.
But anyways ill stop here since I seem to be hitting a nerve here.

I love my touchpad + CM9, although it's getting slower and battery doesnt last all that long... it's a great device.
But I have been offered a xoom 3g
Should I stay or should I xoom?
Can't make up my mind - think this would be the benefit:
install ICS on XOOM more stable than CM9?
Decent working cameras
GPS
not bothered about 3g
also IPS screen
SD slot.
Think am persuading myself
believe me im in that struggle aswell since there's a refurbed HTC jetstream im being offered for the same cash as the touchpad

Well if yours is getting slower that is on your end. Mine is only getting better. As far as battery life goes, you can do all sorts of tweaks to extend it. Anyways the zooms battery isn't good either. Camera-who cares? You already spent the money on this and this tablet is only getting better man. Look how far its come already. I would stick with this tablet. Don't throw your money away.
classicnerd butta touchpad.
i absolutely love my touchpad. while people are wandering around with their ipad's and everything... i sit there feeling good about myself that i have a dual booting, great piece of hardware, that like nickster said... is just getting better and better as they keep updating it, that i only spent $150 for. can't really beat that imo.
The Xoom is much faster. The CPU in tegra 2 is better than the snapdragon s3. Its also officially supported and has a higher resolution and better build quality.

My friend has a xoom and battery life is very good. I used it a whole day with some heavy usage and still got battery left. While touchpad only last a few hours. However I love the 9 in screen size for reading, surfing, drawing etc by far over 10 in
Am in 2 minds...
there's something nice and special about the touchpad
i like being able to dual boot and mess around...
i'm reassured that i dont have a £600 ipad (seriously, getting one of those out on the train is a bit much when a touchpad at less than a quarter of the price is not that far behind!)
but
i would like to:
be able to skype with family without having to reboot into webos
transfer files on an sd card
not worry about weird non native android bugs
not worry about weird charging issues with sudden refusals to like a particular cable
3g+gps would be nice, but don't need them...
you feel like a pioneer with the touchpad, a maverick. the xoom is just another tablet
Got both and I really enjoy my Touchpad.
My touchpad bricked itself a few weeks ago and I bought a Xoom for cheap to use while i keep trying to bring the touchpad back to life.
The camera support and video chat capabilities of the xoom are fantastic...battery life is excellent (for me) and I'm 100% happy with it.
I totally agree hp touchpad is getting better and better, latest cm gives you working Mic so skyping is no problem. Camera on a tablet is a gimmick to me...most people will try it once and forget about it...unless of course you are chatting with family that lives far away...
Without overclock the battery is way more than I need to last me a days work
I paid 140 for mine and I'm sitting pretty until next hardware revamp
I bet Xoom would be pretty good as well but the price is what makes it less of a bargain...if I were you I'd only get the Xoom on some awesome deal
Now with the new optimizations coming to CM they'll make it even faster (2x) at almost the same battery draw
I also love the rubber stand that comes with the touchpad, haven't really seen equivalent on any other Android tablet, Apple on the other hand gets all the best accessories...urrgh

Not accurate, Xoom battery life is comparable to the iPad 2. It ranges between 9.5 and 11.5 hours of watching video.
I'd like to update mine with a newer nightly to see if that makes it run quicker, but am wary and don't want to ask about it on here for all the abuse you get! there's so many posts about updates etc it's incomprehensible so i'm stuck

I very much want a nexus 10, but I am wondering how the performance compares to say tega 3 and 4? If I bought one will it be pretty much useless a year from now? I am especially worried because its only dual core. (and I have no idea how the graphic chip compares). Its already been out 6 months and while its still the current tablet, history shows after a year a tablet is pretty much obsolete.
Also is it responsive? I've looked up videos but is it better than a nexus 7 atleast? (currently I have a nexus 7 but want a bigger tablet).
Do you guys feel its worth $400+?
it s not worth it .
the problem its with the 2gb ram ( 400 mb free true ) this i think its related with the frequent restarts and freeze .

From N7 to N10 you can feel the difference. (I use Gnex, N4, N7 & N10)
It is all depends on your usage pattern. For me, it is fast enough (browsing, reading, movies) others might not think the same.
The point is, you need to identify what you really need in 10 inch tablet in reference of your usage.

The tegra chips aren't that good actually. They are mostly hyped up by Nvidia.
The only plus for them are the exclusive games.
If the Tegra 4 will be better is something which we don't know yet.
Actually, I think the hardware is quite capable, it's the software that I think needs improvement. Before I got my N10, I had an Asus Transformer, like the grandpappy of tablets. The N10 blows it out of the water. I replaced my Asus after 1.5 years, I can see me keeping the N10 a lot longer.

Dumbest thing I've ever read. Although not surprising from reading your previous comments.
This thing has a dual core A15 processor, nothing like the quad core A9s that people seem to think are better. Plus, the GPU is nothing to scoff at either. This thing will be around for a long time. I mean, hell, look at the XOOM. That thing has been around forever and even got JB.

Xoom was first - Xyboard followed. Xoom introduced Honeycomb to the world (which thankfully was very short lived). And yes the Xoom is still cruising along on 4.2.2, and performs far better than when it was right out of the box. I'm waiting for an updated N10 in the fall (or N11 as the rumours go) to finally replace the Xoom.

Absolutely. Technology always changes and gets better. The only time I experience any lag on this tablet is when the app itself is poorly designed. Web browsing has never lagged once, even on the stock ROM.
It does everything I want it to and more. I'm also happy to know I'll be receiving the latest OS updates lightning fast.
why people get upsad when others are saying their opinions and they dont come with arguments in compare ?
Sorry kids ! i was wrong ... our candy Nexus 10 has 4gb ram . It s planty for the future . It was an error from me and Its not lagging its just freeze and restarts .

That "comparison" between the Nexus 10 and Tegra 4 is wrong on so many levels...heck they are not even using the same browser. NVIDIA hype machine is in full swing...
In addition the demo is from Nvidia. AFAIK there aren't any unbiased benchmarks out yet.

From my perspective, if you can wait, I strongly recommend you wait. The next nexus 10 will surely pack a quad core A15 chip alongside a much improved GPU. While the T604 GPU is no slouch, the next iteration is going to be better.
Given the mixed bag I've seen in terms of hardware quality (e.g., freezing, restarts, etc), it also makes me question Samsung's reliability for producing these things.
With all things, my preference is to always try and skip the first generation, if you can withhold the temptation. =)
It's already May. It's about 5 more months till the next announcement of the N10 is out. Every day you spend pondering the question is definitely another day that makes picking up the current N10 less worthwhile.
You can always wait for the next big thing which most of the time will be much better. The question you have to ask yourself is if you need the hardware now or not. If you DO need it, there is no point in waiting. You said it yourself, 5 months till the announcement and who knows how long till the next tablet will be availalbe to buy. In tech world that is a long time to wait.
In my opinion right now is a good time to buy mobile hardware (phone or tablet). Current hardware can run anything that's existing on the web and in the media world (HD streams, HD movies, etc etc). I do not see a dramatic web/content development coming that will push current hardware beyond its limits. It was very different a few months ago before current quad core chips and potent dual cores (in the case of the Nexus 10) made an appearence.
Gaming may be a different animal, but then again this depends on how you plan to use your tablet.

In my mind, many of us don't need a tablet. We justify wanting a tablet, but definitely not needing it. This is why I told OP, if he can wait, wait it out.
The next iteration is likely going to see improvements in the screen as well (e.g., maybe higher contrast ratio), etc.
5 months isn't too long. Just stop visiting the N10 forums. Problem solved.

Why would you post such a horribly done comparison? All you do is hate on the nexus 10 and yet you use one all the time apparently.
but anyway
Thanks everyone. I definitely don't need a 10" tablet (especially since I do have a nexus 7) but am certainly wanting one. but I guess I better wait for the next tablet to come out. I was hoping for a new tablet announced at google IO but am not surprised to not see one announced. I'm just impatient lol.
I bought one last week and will get it today. I couldn't decide for a long time and it out of stock here anyway. Atm there's nothing better in the market. And even though the Tablet Z is tempting as well it's not a Nexus.
I own an N7 as well by the way but I wanted a 10" tablet again because it works better for certain things (e.g. PDF)
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
I don't understand why people are saying there's going to be an announcement in 5 months. Just because the thing will have been out for a year doesn't equal a refresh, and there were tons of rumors floating around for a new Nexus 7 at Google I/O and that never happened.
If you tell yourself you can wait, you'll be waiting for the rest of your life because technology moves and keeps moving. There's always going to be something better, and better is always in the eye of the beholder. Just because a new version of a tablet gets released doesn't all of a sudden make your perfectly good tablet any less great, and it certainly doesn't break it in any way.
If you can utilize a bigger tablet and want it now, just get it. Your circumstances and needs are way different than people here, and the people here are always going to tell you there's another one coming around the corner. Which there's absolutely no proof of anyway.

Free RAM is wasted RAM.
http://www.slimroms.net/index.php/faq/slimbean/238-why-do-i-have-less-memory-free-on-my-device
Just curious to see how many are thinking of selling their Nexus 10 I the next two months to buy the new one.
I don't see what more can they improve truthfully. Battery I think will stay the same (I mean on screen time), screen can't improve more, speakers will be the same, etc.
All I can see improvement in is on the CPU. Maybe even 3GB RAM.
Everything else is not really important. Better cameras? Who cares in a tablet?
Maybe some minor design tweaks.
Overall only the CPU is an important change.
No definitely not. I like its design very much, screen is superb as you said, maybe it needs a contrast tweak but its not that important. IMO tablets and smartphones don't need to get any faster in future, they should tweak battery life and fight heat generation of the cpu/gpu.
The most drastic change would be a new/different system but as the "old nexus" is still a nexus it'll be updated anyway.
Only if theyd reduce weight drastically + even better screen (not ppi but contrast) + better battery life + more appealing design + better thermal management I'd even consider buying a new one...I personally don't need to have the newest octa- dexacore cpu with practically the same battery life or even worse...
No.
From my S-Off BadSeed DNA
I'll have to wait and see what they come out with before making a decision.
No, the current version does all I want at this time. I will wait 2-3yrs before buying a new tablet. That assumes it does not die or that battery deteriates to the point I must buy a new one. If anything I don't like about current tablets is that the batteries cannot be user replaced like laptops.
Do you really think all they can come up with is a new CPU?
And even if its only that, there are people who always want the newest and best thing on the market. If they put a better GPU (we rly need one), 1 more GB RAM (cause 1 is used only by the gpu) and maybe better build quality, it's already a huge improvement.
Add ASUS' keyboard dock and this thing is a dream come true.
Not going to sell it, but my wife has gotten very frustrated with the slow performance of her hand-me-down Galaxy Tab 10.1, so now she wants me to get a new tablet so she can have my Nexus 10. So there's a good chance I'll be picking up the new one soon after release.
jmo but if the rumors are true that Asus will be making the new one, I'm happy with what I got (Samsung).
More than happy with my current tablet and will be sticking around probably until next year. There's not too much they can add that the current one doesn't do. Probably just better CPU/GPU which isn't worth a $500 upgrade.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 4
A better GPU and more ram is all thats really needed. The design is fine, screen and speakers are all great. CPU is fine but I'm sure most wouldn't mind a quad core.
No.. I'm not chasing unnecessary (for me) technology advancements...
LTE support could get me to sell/switch. Also I got the 16GB and I wish I would have got the 32GB. If the new one doesn't have LTE I might try to pick up a first gen 32GB cheap.

Other than wanting better battery life, there isn't really anything about my n10 hat i need improving. CPU, GPU, screen, speakers, design, build quality, it all does it's job just great.
I just got mine yesterday off Swappa after studying the rumor mill and comparing the the first gen to my needs. It didn't make sense to spend $180 more for something just because it was new in my case.
No, I will keep my Nexus 10. I am very happy with it and don't need an new One
Yes, I'm selling my N10 to buy the new one.
Having lived with the N10 for a year, I'm not afraid to acknowledge its shortcomings.
The GPU overheats too quickly while playing certain games. I had the N7v2 for a short while and the GPU in that tablet was quicker and cooler and never overheated during the same games I played on the N10.
The CPU could be faster - I'm not saying the Exynos is slow, but when I'm loading desktop sites, it does take a few seconds for every site to load. I don't like mobile sites.
More RAM is always a good thing.
The way I see it, I plan on selling my 32 GB N10 for $250-$300, and then I'll by the new one for $200-$250.

How do you plan on buying the new one for 200-250 dollars? Or did you mean 200-250 dollars more because I don't think it will be that cheap

Selling this for the nexus 7 2013. The size is just too much, I'm no longer a can of 10 inch tablets. Sticking to 7 to 8.5 inches and anything bigger will just be a laptop or an ultrabook.

I really can't refer to 7 inches as tablet.just as a big phone. 7 inches for me is a joke, I prefer a phone than a small tablet.
Only as a second tablet I can find it of use.
