Hi,
I have a Galaxy S2 .
I want to know that if i root the stock firmware and then if warranty issue arises , reflash my stock firmware .
After this would there be any way to know whether it the phone was rooted .?
Would that increase the counter that increases for the illegal FW's flashed .?
B'coz i'm not using custom/illegal ROM's
So this way would i preserve my warranty .??
you can root by flashing cf-root kernel and then if for any reason something happens you can flash back to stock firmware but the binary counter will go up one so just buy a usb jig for like $8.

But why would the counter increase if i reflash with stock ROM .??
cuz in order to root you need to flash cf-root kernel which is unofficial. It wont go back to 0 if you flash back to stock. the only way i know to reset is with a usb jig unless there is some other way

Insert the jig after you turn it off.
Is the jig model specific or any would work ??
Intratech has an amazing thread with the carrier firmware. Download your carrier firmware and go crazy with the flashing. If your device starts playing up and you want to warranty it, reflash your carrier firmware. Plug in USB jig (wipes binary counter) and you're done

Get one thats called Samsung Galaxy S USB JIG from ebay
I just unrooted my SG2 with oneclick root and the exclamation mark is still there at boot (below the logo). My super user icon is now gone. How do I get rid of the exclamation mark? Don't want to void the warranty even with an unrooted phone.

International version used a jig to reset the custom kernel counter. It may work on the at&t version, but I don't think its been tested.

So I am kind of stuck? Is this a way Samsung used to track if a phone rooted itself before or not?
Sucks too cause I didn't do anything after rooting it..and I may have hardware problems
I read in another post the jig did work for the AT&T version but cannot verify (ordered and waiting for my jig). For $4, might be worth a shot anyway.
Revert to the stock kernel. The "!" is there because of the nonofficial kernel.
You need to flash the stock kernel.
Custom kernels will set ! unless you use a jig or some special tricks (flashing the kernel from the device itself apparently doesn't trigger the !)
Rooted /system will not set ! - for example if you use my unbrick packages you'll get root but no !.
Oh boy, and where would I find stock kernel and how to install it back? I'm assuming I have to use odin 1.82 and install a tar file.
Don't tell me that every phone has a unique kernel and I should of backed mine up...

Success! You guys are awesome. I see I have the super user icon, can I unroot it with oneclick root?

Turn the phone OFF completely then plug in the jig wait for the
big yellow triangle, then unplug the jig and set odin up with the
TAR file or files in the correct order.
Plug the usb cable in to the phone and Odin should light up
yellow where it has a box with com: in it.
Once you see it light up, click the START button in Odin and
it should flash your rom.
Good luck!
Hi guys,
I want to order a USB Jig to reset flash counter and remove yellow triangle from my sgs2.
I want to know if resetting flash counter can still be done using the Jig, ive been reading that new bootloaders block it?
if not, can it still remove the yello triangle?
also, any other functions for usb jig besides removing those two items?
Thanks.
If you find the jig doesn't reset the flash counter, flash the old bootloader from here (it's in the section in bold red type) in the PDA or Bootloader section of Odin and your jig should work.
Apart from setting Custom Binary Download to "no" & Current Binary to "Sasmung Official" in download mode, I'm not aware of the jig having any other functions.
well, the jig will put the phone into download mode, even with the new bootloader. it will fail to reset the counter then thought, just as mentioned
Removing yellow triangle
You can remove yellow triangle, by downloading the stock kernel from intratech's thread on xda and flash the .tar file via Odin..
then u unzipped the CF root zip file, copied the zImage file into sd card .. and flashed the zImage file via CWM Manager, selecting Flash Kernel.
Hope this makes sense to you.

Hi all.
My SGS2 needs to be sent in for repairs in the imminent future, and in preparation I unrooted my phone and flashed a Stock ICS build (my carrier is Optus, Australia). Before this I was running a few different GB roms. When I boot my phone I do not get the yellow triangle (I assume this is because I am running official Samsung firmware), but if I put the phone into download mode, it still shows the 8 custom flashes I did earlier.
My real question is will Chainfire's Triangle Away app remove the binary count even if the triangle isn't there?
And a better question would be, would having official firmware be enough to still claim warranty, or would I need to have both official firmware and a "0" custom flash count?
Thanks for any help!
I believe Samsung may throw a stink about the counter, even if you are on stock/official firmware. This counter would imply that you have voided your warranty previous to the current state of the phone and it's OS
To be safe I would use the Triangle away app
EDIT: Yes, the app does reset the flash counter. See https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.triangleaway&hl=en
Its always safe to clear the counter before returning it for service. yes the triangle away app will clear the counter with/without triangle.
download it for free from here

Thanks guys!
I tried to run the app but it's telling me I need Superuser access...
Does this mean I need to root the phone, use the triangle away app, then UNroot the phone?
Sorry if this is obvious... Not overly confident of my ability to keep the phone unbricked haha.

You are correct. Root the phone first, use the app, then unroot.
Thanks!
So it will still think it's Samsung official after that process?
You'll need a rooted ICS firmware already on your phone.
Check the Triangle Away forum to ensure its working with your firmware version.
Flash Triangle Away, this will remove Yellow Triangle and reset Custom Counter to 0.
Flash official unrooted firmware using Odin, this wont increase your Custom Counter as its official. Use a firmware thats specific to your region.

Job done.
Also check my sigi for links
Thanks! This forum is full of amazing help.
So theoretically I could follow those steps then flash the stock ROM a thousand times and the flash counter would remain at 0?
If it makes you feel any better I went to Optus 3 weeks ago with a phone that wouldn't turn on with ICS for another region with root and they fixed it.
I think my USB jig cleared the counter to 0 though. I couldn't connect my phone to dl mode or anything
The app removes the triangle as well as the counter
Yeah I tried using the jig a while ago but I think I have the newer bootloader, so it didn't do anything, which was very disappointing.
I'd just hate to take it in then have them tell me to get bent because I rom'ed it.
Ok so let me know if theres a problem with my process.
I'm using ICS and the kernel is XWLP4.
There was no LP4 in Chainfires thread but I read that I could use the next closest one. So I should flash something like "CF-Root-SGS2_XW_O2U_LP3-v5.4-CWM5.zip" and then triangle away then use the Optus stock ICS?
UPDAT: I tried this method and it worked perfectly! Thanks so much to everyone who helped.
has worked like a charm for me everytime i put stock firmwares on my phone
Safest way is to flash a really old firmware and thus flashing the old bootloader. Now reset the counter with an usb jig. Done.

Or just flash the old bootloader.
Hey guys
I have an SIII with a custom rom and kernel, yet I dont get the yellow triangle on the main booting screen?
I havent installed triangle away either, its strange because surely it should be there with any "non official" software.
Im not complaining, just curious, anyone shed any light?
Thanks
SGS3 does not show the warning triangle, but if you boot into download mode, you will see the binary flash count.
Also check: phone menu / settings / about device / status / device status >> modified ??

This is an interesting question, and I'd been wondering this myself recently.
If the only "side effect" of flashing ROMs is an increasing counter on a screen that we hardly ever see, then unless we need to return our phones for warranty repairs, then we don't need to do anything?
Or does the counter have a maximum value after which the phone can't be flashed?
It only works with certain firnware it wont for example work with LF2..
The counter is only FYI and for warranty claims.
It won't affect your phone's behaviour and will go back to 0 (or 1) if the counter reaches the maximum value for (unsigned?) integer values.
You don't need to do anything. My guess is that the reason for most people attempting to reset the counter in S2 is that they were annoyed by the yellow triangle, so they got rid of it.

Yes, reason was for triangle, but also to reset the counter. As most users of custom ROM flashing an insecure kernel did it via CWM recovery, the counter didn't increase. So if you need to return for warranty, just flash stock firmware with Odin. Done.

So the only use for triangle away for the SIII is to reset the flash counter?
Bit confused by some of the replies

Yes. This is because if the binary counter is >0 then your warranty will be void if you send it to Samsung. Reset it (and flash stock firmware) and nobody is none the wiser.
I have factory ROM, all I've done is flash CWM recovery via Odin, then rooted, and my custom binary count is (1) and my Device Status = Modified.

Hi,
I also installed just CWM and SuperSU. As CreekDirt say, that set my Flash Count to 1, and Device Status to "Modified". So i used Triagle Away, and my Flash Count now shows as 0/not present/official, but the Device Status still show "Modified".
How can i fix the Device Status?
All you have to do is to wipe factory/data and cache then you will get the normal status on your phone

Hi,
Thanks for replying. I don't want to unroot. I wanted to clear the "modified" status, but keeping CWM + Root. Is that possible?
Nope
Hi Diaze,
Thanks for replying. I also thought that such would not be possible, until i saw this in another forum (Local Brazil community) about that same matter.
Rafael said:
@pedrohp that must be isolated or related to your current ROM. I'm using WanamLite ICS XXALF2 V1.2 + SiyahKernel S3-v1.2.6 and after Triagle Away, my flash count shows as 0 and Device Status show as Unchanged

You don't loose root from using triangle away! Flashing LF2 lost root but then used CF–root
