I have never had the need but I am considering rooting. One item I am concerned about is the ability to get firmware updates after rooting. Do they still prompt/download? If not what do you guys do about this?
NEVER take a firmware update when you're rooted; thats never a good idea. Devs usually get the updates, cook them in the roms, then you would flash the updated rom over your current (if its same) or flash the newly rooted rom. Alot easier than it sounds, you'll get the hang of it. 9 out of 10 times accepting firmware updates will remove root. Just ask the retards that accepted the 2.3 GB update on their Evo 4G lol. Had to wait abt 3 months for root ...

Another noob question: Will the rooted vibrant phones get the official 2.2 ota update automatically? If not, how can we get it? Do we have to unroot to stock 2.1 and manually flash official 2.2? If the answer to my first question is yes; what will happen? Do we get unrooted automatically n loose data?
Thanks.

Although this isn't definitive, just expect that *IF* you have taken responsibility for modifying your phone (and rooting is modifying), you will have to take responsibility for updating it yourself. Merely rooting may not leave you with a brick post OTA, but we've also heard plenty of tales of unmodified or only-rooted phones being bricked with the last OTA, so be advised. And this is not just a Samsung issue. HTC, Motorola, LG...etc ad nauseum...
OTA's are made for those who do not modify their Android phones (i.e. the overwhelming majority of users). The only upgrade scenarios an OTA can reliably count on being workable are those where a phone's OS is in a known state. Samsung & T-Mobile cannot take into consideration modified devices when developing an OTA, because such modifications run the gamut and are impossible to predict.
Furthermore OTA's are pushed out in batches. In other words, all of the million-plus Vibrants will not be updated all at once, but in stages. This makes several things likely. First, it's likely that it could take many weeks for you to get any official OTA pushed to your phone. Second, it's equally likely that you will be able to get the OTA packaged as an Odin or CWM update long before you'd ever see the OTA officially.
So here's the gist...
If you want to rely on an OTA, don't modify your phone in any way whatsoever. If you want to modify your phone an OTA is irrelavent, as an update will be available to you as a modder long before it's available to the majority.
If you have a rooted stock 2.1 you will recieve the ota, but you will loose root.
Edit: id just listen to that guy up there

I have an opinion question
These are my wants
I want the ability to disable Sense UI should I get tired of it.
I want to be able to use wireless tethering
I want to stay mostly stock otherwise and maintain absolute stability
I'm not new to flashing I have an at*t captivate that I've flashed hundreds of times
but this device just doesn't seem to need it as badly.
My main question is this, based on the current root method is their a possibility of the upcoming gingerbread update killing the root method? and bootloader unlock. I'm somewhat inclined to wait until gingerbread comes out before rooting the phone since it's coming soon, but I don't want to wait to long and lose the ability to root / install custom roms if I want.
do it and get it over with...there's no downside. everything you want can be attained with root..
when gingerbread comes ota it will be available for root users the same day anyhow.

I'd say go ahead and root. The biggest benefit to me is uninstalling Verizon's bloatware. Plus, CM7 will be rolling out for the TB eventually. In the meantime, Das Bamf can fill in; there's a de-Sense script if you get tired of Sense. Anyways, I don't think the GB update will really make a huge difference; at least not if it's masked by Sense anyway. (Sorry, my bias against the HTC "People" app is shining through —the number one thing I have against Sense.)
+1 for root now
Sent from my Perfect Storm 1.2 Tbolt
"People" app is the worst but google gesture search has eliminated my need for it. at least i never have to see it now.
Rooted
Don't know why I even asked lol
I knew I'd do it eventually , rooted and installed the basic debloat rom
phone almost feels lighter, and I'm conforted seeing clockwork recovery flash a rom
lol
def root!
i see you've already done the deed, but most likely tbolt gingerbread will be available here for rooted users before it goes ota
If you root using the Permroot Bootloader guide in the development thread can you then use the unroot guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009423
to remove the permRoot? Just curious because I am going was thinking of Perm rooting a coworkers phone but since it is a business paid phone I need to be able to unroot it if it ever had to be sent in for repair or an upgrade.
I rooted my phone for the first time and i saw an immediate increase in battery life when using the undervolted kernels so
+1 for rooting.
Hi, I'm a noob seeking advice. I rooted my phone a few weeks back just because I could, but haven't really done much with it since. I haven't upgraded from 2.2.1 yet -half because I've been busy and half because I'm shy about bugs.
My question is: since LG claims it's going to release the official upgrade this month, what are the advantages of official upgrade versus unofficial? It seems like every unofficial one has bugs still, so I'd be tempted to go back to official. Also, since I've already rooted it, I'm under the impression that kills official updates. If I want to go back to the official version, would I have to unroot it first or is there a way to just allow the official update to go through?

About the 2.3 official update, everyone is waiting for that, since 2.3 unoficial Roms have bugs and unimplemented features. For example, I love the CyanogenMod rom but I had to gave up on it since the the bluetooth is not working for auriculars and for the bluetooth system on my car. The 2.3 official update will solve all the problems for these current unoficial Roms, so if you really need a fully working Rom, better not go for those 2.3 Roms available.
You should not upgrade to 2.2.1 (or 2.2.2) using the regular LG update method. That will "unroot" your phone. There are 2.2.1 and 2.2.2 official unrooted Roms (just google for that, you will find them pretty easy). In that case you won't use the KDZ method but the safer Android Recovery method (avoid using the KDZ!! it's the easiest way to kill your phone!!).
So... if you just want to "unroot" your phone, you can always get the official update back in your phone, by using the KDZ method. KDZ reflashes your phone, and that's why the risk is higher than using the Android Recovery method which one wipes out some things like /system/*
mix em both and they will shine...I hope LG's release sky rocket's mik CM7 rom and then i will permanently switch to CM...they simply rock..

That's exactly why I haven't gone for it yet. That and I've heard the GPS is still buggy.

I already had the official 2.2.1 before I rooted with GingerBreak, and haven't changed from that. I thought that rooting the phone would automatically block the OTA updates. Is there a way to simply allow the OTA 2.3 update when it comes?
As for kdz versus Android Recovery, everything I've seen around the web for returning to stock says to flash using kdz. Are you talking about using home+vol down+power?
Hey guys, Im completely new to rooting and im getting a rezound in a couple days and i just had a few simple questions that i couldnt find the answers too else where.
1. If I root my rezound will i still be able to receive all the regular updates like the verizon updates and upcoming OS updates? If not what can i do to get those?(Correct me if im wrong but I would assume that i would have to reverse my root somehow if the answer was no but im not sure how to do that)
2. If i root do i have to install a ROM?(Note:Im planning to remove htc sense as soon as i root and install a new launcher...idk if that has anything to do with having to install a ROM but i figured i should ask)
if you plan to stay on the original rom after you root, im pretty sure that you will be able to recieve the actual ota when its released. but you say that you plan to delete a lot of htc stuff (im assuming bloatware and things like that)...i would HIGHLY recommend just flashing a rom with all of that done for you. unless you know what youre doing, removing htc stuff by yourself can be detrimental to your phone and cause it to not work as it should. im currently running cleanrom 4.1 and its incredible. flashing a rom would be the best way to go
hope this helped.
yes that help, thanks. so if i were to use cleanrom 4.1 and i wanted to get the official ICS update when it released, what would have to do to be able to install it?
Forgive me for being a noob but I am going to attempt my first post I usually just read but feel I may be able to give a quality answer. SO, If you make a nandroid backup before flashing any rom's you will be able to revert back to stock at any time. You can do this via a custom recovery. In order to get an OTA, like the ICS one that is coming soon, you will have to reload your stock rom. Simply put, you cannot get an OTA with a custom rom. If you want a custom rom now and an OTA update later, make a backup and revert back to it when the OTA you want is released. Hope this helps!
One thing that nobody seems to ever mention is do NOT do anything to your phone for the first 30 days because you want to make sure you have a solid phone.
If your phone is constantly malfunctioning because of a problem with the phone, but you have already rooted your phone and flashed a new ROM, then you're going to be nothing but frustrated because you will think it's the ROM, or perhaps something you did when rooting the phone.
If you have a problem within the first 30 days and you have not rooted or flashed a new ROM all you do is walk in to Verizon, tell them the phone is brand new, but having issues with [insert problem here] and you get a brand new phone with all your info transfered for free, and another 30 days to make sure your replacement is not defective as well.
Sent from the resounding Rezound
very good tips! thanks guys, your answers are highly appreciated!

What device are you coming from? I went from an OG Droid1 to the Rezound and actually love Sense. I think you should try it out first before cutting it out completely. If you wish you can leave the stock Status Bar/SystemUI and install a different launcher as that will disable most of the Sense elements, ~90% of it. As far as OTA's go, unconfirmed whether or not you can update from the recent leak. Make sure you have stock rom available or do not flash the recent leak and choose one of the older roms (Can always RUU back to the stock rom when official hits). I suggest Rezrom 3.1 with the old firmware patch as for me it's been so far the most stable and best battery life ICS rom I have used.
1. No, you won't be able to get OTA updates. But don't worry too much about that. It takes about a week, but the devs will post a manual method or you can use the RUU that usually preceeds the OTA by a day or two.
2. Don't try to disable sense from the stock ROM. It'll be trouble, I tried it for a while back when we only had temp root and it made it buggy and smoked the battery. Flash some ROMs and let the pros get that stuff worked out for you (and throw your favorite dev a few bucks to keep him interested!)
The real consequence of rooting though is the countless late nights flashing yet another new build or theme or whatever. It's kind of addicting.
On my note 2 I accepted the OTA update and some how I rooted it with the OTA Root keeper. Evertything works fine but I cannot install custom recovery. What woould be the best way to unlock the bootloader and install custom recovery now.
I also have galaxy s3 and droid bionic both are rooted and custom roms installed and working great.
I have been with Verizon 16 years and it's abuot time to change but I think there all the same anymore $$$
If you took the ota then you can not unlock your bootloader as of this time.
why on earth are folks so hell bent on ota's???? fyi when you buy a device that came locked but was unlocked by devs at xda, YOU NEVER EXCEPT ANY OTA! It has been posted all over this forum...please research before you do anything!!
Totally agree! I won't even update an app until I know what the changes are, and even then I usually wait to see if any issues arise with the update.
Doesn't matter how many times you warn people no to install an OTA because it has a bootloader, someone won't listen.
I would never consider taking a ota until after our devs have a chance to check it out. Besides if you run a custom rom your developer will most likely be updating to the new build and you know you can safely flash it.
Besides I know verizon is more worried about blocking crap than they are on their real updates.
Forget the security update and give us official 4.1.2 screw verizon! Verizon ota usually means bad things.

I agree with that. However my point was instead of Verizon spending their time improving their devices they would rather spend their money and time trying to figure out how to screw us. I know 4.1.2 brings little to the table but maybe if they were not working on locking the bootloader they could improve on the builds instead. I would still rather have 4.1.1 over 4.2.1 any day.
