[Q] Vodoo issue - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello I am a noob, I have been searching for 3 days and cant find an answer. I accidently flashed voodoo kernel to my phone. So before doing any research i tried to flash back to stock. So my phone is automatically going to blue recovery, I downloaded the cwm for voodoo and i have it on my phone but when i try to install anything from my zip i get this.
Amend scripting (update-script) is no longer suported.
Amend scripting was deprecated by google in android 1.5.
It was necessary to remove it when upgrading to the clockworkmod 3.0 gengerbread based recovery.
Please switch to Edify scripting (updater-script and udate-binary) to create working update zip packages.
Installation aborted.
Please help like i said i am a super noob this is my first android. All i want to do is get back to debloated debinged with root. If possible mybe a kernel that i can overclock.
Thanks for all the help
Also when i try to use backup off my sdcard i created it says E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip No such file or directory and then Error while erasing boot image. Again Thank You

You have to flash a full Odin .tar package, like ED05, with atlas 2.2 pit file, and re-partition box checked. Then Odin a newer recovery and go from there. Check list of roms in the "stickies" section. Everything you need is there.
Sent Telepathically.

Droidstyle has a good thread in this (q & a) section that details this issue and more. You can substitute the rom of your choice for PowerWashed if you like but personally the PW (ed05 or eh09) are excellent choices. EH09 will need to be odined rather than flashed with recovery though.

[Q] Can I use ODIN to flash any Rom

I have been lurking for quite sometime and eventually got the courage to root my phone and try to flash a rom yesterday. I downloaded Bionix Fusion 1.2 to computer and copied over to internal memory. Used Rom Manager to install rom from sd card and it went through some steps and then gave a error message and installation failed. Tried to reboot and I ended up soft bricking my phone and using ODIN to restore stock back. I was so relieved. My question is can I use ODIN to flash any rom to my vibrant?
Thanks so much everyone for their wonderful contributions....
This isn't the Q&A Section, you'll find that here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=747
Thread moved to Q&A.
Flashing a ROM via clockwork is easy to do and the easiest way to do it. Did you make sure you flashed clockwork recovery in ROM manager first? If you did , download a different custom ROM say axura or r12 since onynx didn't work and see if that works as well.
Get this NOOB question out of here!!!!
Thanks for the warm invite...
To answer your question, no. Most roms are in zip format which can only be flashed through Clockwork. To be honest, flashing through CW is way easier than Odin and it doesn't wipe your SD card. You'll need to reinstall your apps, but that's it.
P.S. I'm sorry people flamed you. People forget we were all noobs once.
To answer the question
vinnydakid is basically correct.
But the question was can you use odin to load any rom.... yes if you have it in a .tar or other extension that odin recognizes + .pit file (of course). But since most roms are loading more than just the .tar-file it is way easier to use the clockworkmod. If you really run into problems then flashing back to stock first and then going from there will resolve most problems. You can check the stickys in the dev section they have all the info you would need if you ever run into a problem.
And............ +1 for vinnydakids statement.........people get too rude sometimes and forget we are here to help each other.
As long as it's a .tar file and make sure it's a Rom for vibrant
how do you know if your current kernel supports the ROM that u want to flash?? i used ODIN once to flash.. do i need to use it again? or can i just use clockwork recovery...
and how exactly do u flash using clockwork recovery??
rename the zip to update.zip and goto clockwork and click update?
Please read the sticky... I worked hard so people would not need to ask those questions.

Flash Clockworkmod Manually?

I installed ROM Manager, even paid for premium. But it doesnt work on my Samsung Fascinate. Couldn't get it to flash clockwork, had to use odin. But now need to downgrade clockwork from 3 to 2 because the rom i want to install still using Amend.
ROM Manager always says "An error occured while downloading your recovery" when trying to download older versions of clockwork.
How do i downgrade to a v2 of clockwork manually and where do i find the propery clockwork versions for the fascinate?
thanks
You can find the latest 2.5.1.x CWR modified by jt in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=942021
I don't believe the zip file is compatible with CWR 3.0 (Edify), so you will have to use the Odin package.
As far as ROM Manager goes, it has limited use for us Fascinate owners right now. You can download ROMs with it, but doesn't natively work with our Red CWR and it's best to not update CWR with it, either (at least right now).
i've never installed rom manager and have flash millions of stuff.
thanks, but the links appear to be broke. any other place i can find them?
Here is a link to the .tar file for use with ODIN.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=7ZYAUQAU
Make sure to use the PDA button only.
This is the RED CWR currently in use on the fascinate.
Going to this thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=942021
....and rifling through the pages will find you the .zip version of the same CWR as well.
cheers!
i would just odin work prefectly fine and pretty fast
thanks for link. got v2 and flashed with odin. finally have Super Clean on my fascinate. thanks again!
I'm trying to get a copy of cwm-recovery-ALL.zip but the dropbox link in the OP at
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=942021 just gives a 403 error - according to the thread it's been that way for over a week.
Anyone got a copy? Is there a newer recovery I should be using?

ROM Manager is not 100% friendly with Fascinate. It is best to use Odin to flash tar file or using Red CWM

[Q] OTA is lame

Ive been really busy and have not had the time to dedicate to upgrading to ED01 from my Blackhole eclair. I have used ODIN to get to DL09 and OTA just will not update. Says server busy. Anyone have a .tar package to get me to where I need to be?
This works great and will get you to ED01

Thank you. Ive been searching the forums and this post never came up! Im currently at stock DL09 and flashed CWM 2.5 via Odin and its broken, will not take. any ideas? Im going to try a few more time with Odin and CWM to see if it changes and decides to cooperate.
Remember these get put on root of sd card they do not flash with cwm but stock recovery

is the DJ05 radio still compatible, if not is the suitable upgrade easily attainable (seeing as i had a hard time searching to find the previous links despite some effort), or, pretty please, will you link it?
Also, read through all the info you linked and im curious to know if CWM 3.xx works for all steps..there seemed to be an upgrade of CWM with each increasing modem level.
Lastly, please confirm: CWM 3.xx via odin, reboot. Boot into CWM and install DL09 to EA28 CWM modem delta. Reboot. Boot into CWM and install EA28 to ED01 CWM modem delta. Reboot and begin to ROM/Theme as once before....?

Ive tried this three times now using stock recovery. I get an error message: failed to verify whole-file signature: signature verification failed: installation aborted. I downloaded from three different sources in my attepmts. Once downloaded I use ASTRO to move them to root on SD card file name update.zip. boot into Android system recovery, apply sdcard:update.zip and error as described earlier. Mind you I am stock, unrooted DL09
You need to use the cwm-recovery-all from jt.
1. Pick a custom kernel if you want & put it on your sd card where you can find it.
2. D/l Jt's cwm-recovery-all on your pc.
3. Odin the cwm-recovery-all & put your battery back in & boot directly into it using the 3 button method.
4. Flash your kernel of choice. This will ensure your recovery stays put.
Note: You may not need to flash a custom kernel because I think the odin file permanently overwrites the stock blue recovery but it never hurts to be sure. If you stay on the stock kernel there's a chance it may overwrite cwm when it boots. This eliminates the need to rename anything in order to flash it. Not claiming to be an expert & its obvious your familiar with the mechanics of the process so it should work out. Hope this helps.
Edit: Sorry, forgot to get to the point. Once you've got cwm working you can upgrade the radio using the aforementioned process without having to rename the files. Probably would be a good idea to update the cwm to a more current one as well eventually. But the recovery-all will get you started.

if all you are trying to do [from what i understand] is upgrade your modem from DL09 to ED01
you are already on DL09
in my second link download the zip for DL09 to ED01 zip file and put it on your SD Card.
Flash the CWM ( do not turn back on)
Hold Down the volume up, volume down, and Power button [ 3 finger salute] untill you see the samsung LOGO then you can let go.
Use the volume keys to get to "install zip from sd card" and install the dl09 to ed01 zip reboot and you are at ed01.
Done
Server not available
I tried the Gingerbread leak but decided to go back after ruining an SD card. I reinstalled ED01 but cannot get the ED04 update. Keeps saying server is unavailable
Is this something they do before a new release, take the server down?

In the Link Odin DL09 and you can jump right to ED04
Was the modem the only thing updated in ED04?
Thanks, but I tried all that. Seems I had a bad dl09 install. As soon as I odined the vzw-dl09.tar from adrynalyne the vzw OTA damned near immediately picked it up and took it right to ED04. Now I'm looking for a decent ROM that won't need too much fussing.

[Q] error msg in reboot

Well, first off, I FINALLY ROOTED !!!!!!.....samsung fascinate.I500...2.2.2.....edo5.........rooted with SIMPLE ONE CLICK.......... achieved SUPER USER........downloaded ROM MANAGER........however.......when i try to flash ANY rom, i get error msg " FAILED TO VERIFY WHOLE-LIFE SIGNATURE".....". SIGNATURE VERIFICATION FAILED "....
"INSTALLATION ABORTED"
ANY IDEA WHY I GET THIS ?..........thanks.Dennis
Flashing or installing a recovery on a stock kernel gets reset at boot. You need to flash recovery (cwm) in odin with battery out, insert batt and 3 finger into recovery and flash a custom kernel to get recovery to stick.
good day.
???
hi, and thanks for reply........im sorry but im obviously newbie. can you give advice on how exactly i can acheive your suggestion ?.......i dont know what ODIN is or even how to do this
thanks
dennis
What exactly are you trying to flash? Or what rom are you looking to be on?
good day.
well, like i said, im newb, so i tried the ROM MANAGER app.......and it lists only a few ROMs. but any i try i get same error.
btw, i would like to be on Cynogen, or fresh
Don't really recommend Rom Manger...
-Download Odin.
-Download CWM4 fixed for CM7... HERE. (Bottom of JTs post)
-Copy the ROM you wish to use onto your SD card anywhere.
-Open Odin
-Phone off, remove the battery, hold down volume button, plug in USB cord
-Should go into download mode, shown on the screen of your phone, and show show up as connected in Odin.
-Using PDA Button (Never use phone button in ODIN!) flash the CWM4 for Odin file you downloaded. DON'T do anything until it says success, finished done, etc, just don't stop mid flash. Shouldn't take that long, and your phone should turn back off.
-Reinsert the battery, do the three finger recovery (DO NOT let the phone boot back up otherwise you'll need to reflash recovery)
-Choose install ROM from SD card, choose the rom, CM7 or whatever you downloaded, and flash it.
-Now that's going from memory, so it might not be exactly "install rom from sd card", I think it actually says "install .zip from sd card" or something like that but you get the idea.
- I would recommend backing up all your data, and then wiping cache, dalvik, and data before flashing a new ROM.
- If going to CM7, MIUI, OMGB OMFGB, VGB, etc, any 2.3 based rom you'll want to ODIN the GB_Bootloaders too.
Superoneclick has had problems on 2.2.2 ed05. If you odin the stock ed05 package from pentafive, you dont need to flash a modified kernal to get cwm to stick! Also there is no need to root if your installin a rom, it will already be rooted. My suggestion is to start with powerwashed 1.2 rom get familiar with what you are doing before messing around with mtd gingerbread roms.

If you don't have any clue what ODIN is, or what CWM is, or even how to spell Cyanogen correctly, you have no business at all even thinking about being on CyanogenMod 7. Have to learn to crawl before you can walk before you can run. Read the stickies, read the stickies again, read the stickies again, know what you are doing and understand what you are doing before doing anything to your phone, then start simple with a debloated/deodexed stock rom or powerwash ED05.
+1
There's no trick or magic or easy fix for rooting. Its all about experience. Once you've flashed 20 ROM's+...you'll understand!
I know that some of these are 150+ pages long, I KNOW...I've read them all! Trust me when I tell you, each page is money!
You've got an amazing machine, go read some of the ROM postings and learn the lingo, the steps, the problems and fixes. then root your fascinate.
You'll be glad you did.

[Q] Trying to restore a backup (ROM Manager/CWM)

Hi, I'm sorry to bring this up again, but I could find no clear answer.
My phone broke so I got a replacement. I rooted and updated it (to 2.3.6) and installed ROM Manager. I copied over an old backup to the Clockwork Mod folder on the phone, gave ROM Manager Super User access, and chose to restore the backup. Rebooting into recover gives me this:
-- Installing package...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
From what I've read online, the problem is that, even though I flashed ClockworkMod Recovery, I might be using 3e and not 2e, and rooting again with cf-root will install something that allows ROM Manager to work properly. So can anyone give me clear instructions on how to recover my backup? Thanks!

Read stickies. Flash back to stock, start over, don't use ROM manager. If you have your backup saved to your computer you'll be able to restore when you properly install cwm. Again, read the stickies.

First of all, I did look at the stickies and it made no mention of cwm. Are you saying that any of those methods will make it work? I used ROM manager before on rooted stock so it must have been working before. It wouldn't make sense to update to ics when I'm just going to flash an earlier version from my backup.
Thanks.
Read the stickies more thoroughly then. If you had, you would know that this post (stickied at the top of this forum) references this guide which walks you through how to install CWM. The sticky also references this faq which has in big, bolded, capitalized red letters "DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER" at the top.

Thank you for responding with such a helpful post. The reason I didn't think to go into that guide was because the link made no mention of CWM. I'm going through it now, and I'm stuck at the part where you choose a kernel from that forum. How do I know which one to use? I just want a stock kernel to use CWM, not ICS as many are. Is there a recommended, regularly used one?

If I am not mistaken you are returning to stock with CWM, correct?

Once you get to ICS, the big Kernels are Siyah, NEAK and Entropy's, all can be found in the development section.

Kernels with CWM aren't really stock; after all, CWM is a custom recovery menu. For Gingerbread ROMs, there's either Entropy's Daily Driver or SiyahKernel. List of ROMs, Kernels, and other useful flashable things can be found here.
Do hit my thanks button please. Many others probably wouldn't have bothered to be so nice as to post links like I do.

I believe he's trying to install a kernel with CWM, so he can use it to restore a Nandroid of his old phone. Of course, when you use Mobile Odin, you can even flash an ICS kernel even though you're on a Gingerbread ROM. The ROM won't load of course, but you'll be able to boot into CWM recovery, where you can restore your Nandroid or flash a different ROM/Kernel/what have you.
I'll try flashing one of those kernels. I'm curious, though. ROM Manager, although it might not work, has a method to just flash CWM Recovery onto the device. Why must a new kernel be flashed instead of just the recovery?
I was always under the impression that recovery is only included on the kernel, i.e. flashing CWM recovery IS flashing a kernel. It may be different for other phones. Anyone else know the answer to this?
Okay, I was able to get it working! I followed 3a on the guide and used Entropy's Daily Driver. Then I booted into recovery and restored my backup. Thanks for the links, karate!

For most samsung phones recovery is a part of the kernel and most other devices it isn't done that way, there are some exceptions like I think the skyrocket. Don't quote me on that though
