Not sure what happened to my Screen!!! - Motorola Photon 4G

So I noticed that on my Photon screen there were two streaks which can be seen in the picture. One streak is much bigger then the other. I know the picture is pretty bad, did it on purpose so that the mystery smudges could be soon.
The weird part is that when I wipe the screen with the micro fiber cloth the screen looks brand new no smudges but it seems for some reason those two spots keep coming back as the screen gets used. Anyone have any thoughts? I have never spilled anything on the phone and I do not work in an abrasive environment. I have tried screen cleaner as well still no luck.
I wounder if sprint would fix this with TPE as wear and tear? Somehow I doubt they will though.

hmmm, well since i work at a sprint repair center, i'll just give you my personal opinion, if you brought to me, i would say it's either physically cracked or liquid damage of some kind, but i would have someone else confirm it, but, just take it to your local repair center and keep your fingers crossed it's covered if not, hey, a deductible for an insurance claim is still a lot cheaper $600

I had an issue similar to this with my evo 4g. I took it to the sprint store store and they replaced it the screen. They said it was pressure points on the screen. I have a thread posted on the evo 4g forums general section, cause just like you i was wondering if anyone knew what was wrong with. Must people said water damage...but i take good care of phones and never put them near any liquids.
So when u get a chance, search the evo 4g general forum...check out the pics of my screen and see if they're similar.

I'll have to take a look for this. It's definitely not water damage, I have never seen anything like this before and I have had a bunch of smart phones.

not sure if i agree so much with the liquid damage (but obviously it's difficult to know because it's a picture). It seems as if it is a pressure point like it was in your pocket. me being a tech i have no access to photon screens at all. so depending on how smart the tech you speak to is, it could go either through TEP or he/she would just swap it out.

Repair guy wrecked my phone

Hey guys
I got this phone in August last year. I have bad luck with phones so I want to repair this one instead of getting new one. In the last 2.5 years, this is my 4th phone and I don't like upgrading phone all the time.
Earlier in January, I dropped my phone. Screen worked fine and everything but had a crack. I send for repair. The guy gives it to someone else without my permission to repair it. They repair it and since day 1 the top of screen is unresponsive. I turn screen off and on and then it works. The repair guy won't speak to me any more.
Now it has become permanent. It doesn't bother me as much but I hate it when random keys are being pressed. I think it's because of the pressure built on top?
I then again broke the screen accidently. So now I want to do it myself then get a defective screen and lose more money.
This is my first time changing the screen. To change the screen, do I follow same tutorial as outlined in the the sticky or is there something else? Also I'm confused as to what needs to changed. I don't know if they took something out of my phone and replaced it with something cheap. So do I simply replace the top layer of screen or the LCD? If the LCD, how would 3D work?
Also eBay is filled with screen replacement. If someone can give a link to a cheap deal that will fix my phone, it'd be great! Also the repair guy wrecked the housing of my phone. Is it replaceable?
Last but not least, should I sell the phone once fixed or I can continue to enjoy it? As in, will it break down again later down the road?
Go on amazon.com and buy a digitizer and follow the instructions guide to replace it. I'm not sure if you can buy a new housing or not. Replacing the digitizer should fix your issue. Also, be very careful that you do not tear any ribbons when replacing the digitizer. If you tear one, your phone will be no good.
Also, you could always just warranty it a sprint store. 9 out of 10 times they don't look for the sticker that tells if the phone has been opened or not.

If you can't help the OP then don't post, simple as that.
If you're in canada, look on your local Kijiji site. I've fixed HUNDREDS of iPhone and Android devices simply by advertising on Kijiji.
Look there, find someone who does iPhones and email him. He'll have the tools and expertise to properly repair your phone.
There is a screen replacement guide stickied in this very forum.

Small claims should do it.

Sorry didn't tell about the phone.
It's from Rogers.
There is a sticker over the screw and when the tool is inserted, it voids it (the sticker goes in).
The guy won't reply to email and I really don't want to deal with another tech. So many just take any mobile when they have no clue and look up google to fix it! They won't even spend enough time to ensure it's ok because they have others to fix. I don't want to explain what happened between me and the tech guy as someone will post another "cool story bro" pic. Wasn't expecting that on this forums...
Anyway I doubt I can order from Amazon and having wasted so much money, I'd really appreciate if someone can link me to eBay for screen and digitizer (assuming it fixes the top of unresponsive screen)
So where did you sent it off for repair in the first place? IMO, you paid for a service, and if that service wasn't completed correctly, you send it back and they do whatever they have to do to make it right.
Don't you have insurance? I'm confused right now.
If you can't help the OP then don't post, simple as that.

I found someone on craigslist who said they will do it
They said it'd be done tomorrow. Takes them 1 week for parts to arrive.
Parts arrive, they go under renovation
2 weeks after, they open it up and say they don't have tools to finish it
1 week later I get it and it's repaired by someone else
Tell them problem, they say ask them since they repaired
The third party says its firmware problem and can't speak English well and ignore me
Few weeks forward
Take iPhone for jailbreak
Pick it up, it doesn't work properly
Bring it back, they refund exact same money on spot
They say it was already a problem and they didn't do anything wrong and can put old firmware back again
They say take it to Apple, they know more
Apple says the phone is finished
I DONT want to spend countless hours going back and forth. I just want to do things my way. The amount of time spent, if I just went to work instead, I'd have gotten a new phone instead.

That was a warning after deleting 5 unnecessary posts.
if i root my phone, the screen issue isn't permanent, is it?
And this is the second time i root, after having permanent screen issue with HTC hero. So I'm a little worried. If it's safe to root without damaging screen, which root would be best? I just want to get rid of some Rogers programs as they're causing my battery drainage very fast. It's like 2% a minute! Also will a reset fix battery issues?
I am going to underclock my CPU to make battery life long.
Took Evo 4G in for repair a while back, the USB port wasn't charging right, but it would if you propped it up the right way. Anyhow sprint gives it back, won't charge at all, then they tell me I cracked the motherboard and I'll have to pay. My word against theirs, I ended up having to shell out 50.

Why are you bumping? There really isn't much you can do, you should have sought a reputable repair shop, not just some guy on craigslist. If the guy isn't going to honor his work, you are pretty much out of luck.

Cracked Screen

Looks like I'm the first to post about this in the HOX+ section
Had the phone face down after having recently rejected a call, my dad and I heard a tiny sound but didn't think much of it. Later when I picked it up I was in utter shock to find the screen had cracked. The phone is only 1 month or so old and HAS NEVER EVER been dropped.
I gave AT&T a call knowing I'd get no where...and yes, I got no where. So I called HTC and they were super nice. However, they pretty much told me that while screen defects are possible, it's next to never that it's ruled as such by the technician. I sent it in anyway to see what happens.
I really don't have any other options at the moment to getting it repaired as I could not find a single place that sells HOX+ parts. Some have reported HOX parts being cross compatible, but I'm not going to take the phone apart (and risk damaging it) on a "maybe".
In sum, I'm heartbroken and pissed.
And to rub salt into the wound, I'm having to use my wife's old iPhone 3GS in the meantime :crying:
always sad to hear about the death of a beloved phone :crying: Good luck and please keep us informed.
I'm more sorry to hear that u have to use a sorry a** iPhone for the time being
Sent from my HTC One X+ using Tapatalk 2
I'd cry if I had to use an iPhone. Sorry to hear about your phone. I think the one x and + both share the same dimensions so maybe a one x screen will work but the leds will be white not 100% about compatibility so maybe check with HTC
These phones are actually really easy to tear apart! Don't be scared
Best of luck getting your baby working

I would hope that a technician could tell the difference between a defect and impact damage. If it were dropped, there would be some kind of impact mark somwhere, especially considering how hard Gorilla Glass 2 is supposed to be to break. Fingers crossed for you.
Don't feel bad. I just sent mine back to HTC as well. All layers of the screen destroyed but surprisingly the phone still worked so I'm looking at a new digitizer and lcd. I miss her

Thanks guys. Still ticked to no end, and the iPhone 3GS certainly doesn't help. Should have never sold all my ex-Android phones (urgh).
Still no word from HTC. I'm basically torn between forking over $200+ for the repairs if they're not going to repair it under warranty and just selling it as is on eBay. I figure I can get $300, then use the money toward a Nexus 4. It's going to kill me not having LTE, 64GB storage, sharp screen, nor the sexiness that is the HOX+, but I can't spend $200 after just recently spending $250 to buy it. I don't know. Confused

HTC/Futuretel in Canada quoted me $430 for screen + digitizer. I smashed it a few weeks ago, you can find my thread in the q&a section.
I found a company in Vancouver that will do it for $135 so we'll see how that repair goes.
Good luck to you too.
Sorry to hear about yours as well, hope you get it back all sorted. $400 is a lot just for a screen repair,

My status changed to "In Repair" today. Not sure if that means they're going ahead and repairing it under warranty or that they're looking at and will contact me soon with estimate. Wait and see I guess. Keeping my fingers crossed.
It does not mean that. Mine said the same thing the first day and it was explained to me that it means they are taking it apart to diagnosis the extent of condition. My final cost was 200. They claimed they needed to replace the casing as well... I didn't argue it and paid up. You can dispute the charges though.

You're absolutely right. An hour later they sent me a quote with the same thing, $200 for the screen and casing. I called them up and asked as to why the casing needed replacing when only the screen was cracked. They escalated it and someone is going to contact me back. I don't have a problem paying to replace the screen (which I hoped to be around $120), but why should I pay an extra $80 for a casing that was in pristine condition.

I have zero hope that any good is gonna come out of this and I don't want to wait another week (was told up to 10 days) for them to review my case only to come back and tell me they won't cover them. Thought about putting the $200 toward a Nexus 4 (or whatever I got from the selling the HOX+ as is), but I really love my HOX+, even if I miss the Nexus experience.

Am sorry to hear about your screen. Don't wanna go off topic but stick to the HOX+. I have the nexus 4 as well and it's a good phone and all but the camera and audio experience is awful. Got my phone back yesterday from HTC and was surprised to find out that they actually sent me a brand new one instead of repairing my original one. This actually makes me feel a whole lot better about dropping $200.
I'll give :good: for HTC for their quick turnaround and the nice packaging the phone came in.
All in all, I'm just glad to have my [new] HOX+ back.

Who is keeping their One despite gap gate issues?

My One has a modest gap along most of the top, and you can feel the screen jutting out a bit when you swipe down the notification drawer. But I wouldn't have even noticed these issues if it wasn't for the nitpicky bastards on this forum pointing out every tiny imperfection.
I don't have any dead pixels or other problems, so I'm going to ignore the tiny physical defects and keep my phone instead of returning it 50 times only to get one with different or worse issues.
Who's with me?
I'm very satisfied with my phone, but I still might check back into ATT on day 10 or so to see if new stock is improved.
I have small gaps on top and bottom and screen overhang on my top left corner. It's still the most finely crafted phone I have ever owned.
I think the gap issue is way over blown by the OCD nerds on XDA. I'm sure my phone has flaws but I keep it in its case and I don't spend time just staring at it.

I have the common very slight gap on the top, but I'm keeping my One. There's no use exchanging the phone and maybe getting a worse unit in return. I don't even notice it if I'm not specifically looking for it. My One is in a case, anyway. I've been an iPhone owner for years and I get tired of this "OCD" crap and "I've exchanged my phone fourteen times" every time a phone is released.
Definitely will be returning due to gap gate and the top of the screen sticking out. Will probably wait until the end of the period to see if new stock arrives with fixes to these issues.

That's insulting to someone who really (painfully) suffers from OCD.. Hint.
I have two very small gaps, the screen is recessed at the bottom, and is raised at the top. All very minor. No dead pixels. But I do have a very small piece of some sort of fiber behind the screen. Can't see it during normal use because it is located where the battery indicator / time is located. However, it is clearly noticeable when I turn the screen sideways.
I wish there was some sort of way to move it out. Probably going to exchange it.

Of all the hundreds of posts and reviews I'd read and many HTC's viewed pre-release, this issue was rarely mentioned. It's a mature piece and very well done..actually top of the bunch IMO.

I put that guy on my block list a while back.. The only reason I see what he wrote was because you quoted him..
He has issues!
Report his offensive post, block him and enjoy the phone!
"Gap Gate" isn't a big enough issue to warrant taking my phone back, I think. Certainly not the metal, anyway. The screen overhang is annoying to me (when I notice it - which is almost never in typical usage), but I think I can handle it.
The only thing making me consider returning my phone during the 14-day window is the option to get the developer edition instead. Knowing damn well that AT&T will screw us with updates leaves a very bitter taste in my mouth. I haven't done it yet in the event that the latest software update for the International ROM is for stuff that's already included in the AT&T version, but I'm quite tempted. The fact that international ROMs will work on the AT&T model is the other thing that's holding me back. I just don't want to get into the business of flashing such and such an update all the time if I don't have to. I'm almost certainly going to be staying on a stock ROM of some sort, if only to keep camera functionality (my One XL is using a stock-based ROM right now for just this reason -- the camera is important to me).
Just received my phone today from att.com, it's perfect.

Except that it's yet another thread with "gap gate" in the title. It's not a conspiracy! Do you really think HTC is doing it on purpose? Need to let that term die.
Hey, how come Andrew gets to get up? If he gets up, we'll all get up, it'll be anarchy!
I keep going back and forth on this. I have a small gap on the top and virtually no gap on the bottom. I also have a small nick in the aluminum between the bottom speaker and the screen, right on the corner. I have an overhang on the top and the bottom too. I'm worried if I go exchange it, I'm going to end up with something worse, or with dead pixels or something.
Part of me wants to exchange it and get a developer edition as I think the build quality is overall better on those. Part of me wants to just forget the very minor defects I have and keep it. I only have 2 more days to make my decision though as my 14 days will be up. It's such a great phone overall though.

that is what i did. i cannot accept a device that has a minor issue! not with the $579 device! if some user here are sticking with some minor issue then it is not me, i always go for the way they advertise the phone. no dead/stuck pixel and a gap. the phone is advertise as zero gap device. but when htc will perfect this design just like the way they advertise it? this phone is one of the best built quality phone at the moment..

not sure why people are complaining about gaps or anything that are not dead pixels since you will probably use a case with it and notice the gaps

The key word you used was "probably". Some people don't use a case. Some people want their phone to look as nice as possible. You are supposed to get what you pay for.... and this is not a cheap device.

every one of us has our own preference about build quality. me i want it just like the way they advertise the device. money doesn't grow on trees.
it doesn't matter if you use case it will not make the gap disappear, it will be there and you know it. and if you're ok with a minor defective device well that's fine with me, that is your device not mine. i just want my earned money to be worth spending on the device.

Can you guys show me where the advertise it with no gaps? I don't think I ever saw the exact words "no gaps" being advertised.
What about the operating system what about sense? Sometimes when you exit something it's not as smooth as other transactions. Why aren't you guys complaning about that?
Are the gaps really really that bad ?

Its advertised as "zero gap" construction but I agree that people are too anal about it. People sending back all these devices are going to make it very difficult for carriers to replace them if it keeps up.

operating system can be fix by updates.. it is actually zero gaps because it is a unibody device.. everything need to be flawless. people care because they want their money to be worth on spending.what if that gaps will get worse its getting older? what are you gonna do? send it to htc to get it fix? if you are ok with you device with minor issue then that is fine.sharing this to anyone who care not to anyone doesn't care.
Mine wasn't sealed. Just had two stickers holding it shut. The bag it came in was sealed though. It had the sticky cover over the phone and nothing was missing and the phone was in perfect condition.

Even if the phone had zero gaps you guys would find something to complain about.

Ummm... Pretty sure most carriers ship in open boxes - how else do you think they get the required SIM card in there? All phones I've ever gotten from T-Mobile, going all the way back to the Sidekick II, were just sealed with a sticker.
Same thing with at&t
Same with Sprint
Same with Verizon
And Sprint didn't even use SIM cards back then.
You guys are just looking to complain.

Please search on the Internet how carriers put their SIM cards inside the box and you will see how it works ... And today a tmobile representative confirmed all new htc one comes with the box covered in plastic , if is not covered, the phone is reburbished... I wish i had the conversation saved. So i could show it to you
.. There's no body complaining ... We are just giving information

Front glass crack/scratched .... Never dropped.

It's extremely small but I'm sure could get worse. Thankfully Google support is wonderful and sending me a replacement....

I considered that... Had 2 other people look at it too. We all thought it was a crack. You'd have to see it in person. Either way crack or scratch it hasn't been dropped or knocked on anyway. Just wanted all newbies to Google store to know their customer service is top notch when it comes to support after the purchase.

Did you purchase Nexus protect? Just wandering if they are doing this out of warranty or because you bought the extended plan.
So tired of these claims. Maybe you got ghosts in your home?

why are you tired of these claims? the issues are real.
even the carrier i work for released a memo advising us of this and to do a swap .
if it wasn't real there would be no advisory..

I don't remember living in a world where glass has a problem with spontaneous combustion. Phones get cracked or scratched either during the shipping process, or due to user error. They just don't develop scratches by themselves.
It is possible there was a hairline fracture in the glass, and while using it, it may have spread to be more noticeable. However a phone that is in pristine condition when unboxing, stays in said condition until there is user neglect.
so was this a scratch or a crack?

Either you are a troll or just trying to bash the nexus brand or maybe telling the truth. But 99.9% of the time screens just don't "crack" or "shatter" for no reason, if that were the case, how come even the low budget phones don't crack or shatter out of nowhere? But it's just a coincidence this phone shatters?

Your carrier advised you that glass cracks by sitting on the table when nobody is around? If that is what you understood from the memo, I am surprised the carrier still hasn't fired you. Now take your non sense elsewhere.

It is a trend now. Some retards break their screen then start threads to find/convince other people then call the company and say hey I got other people with exact same issue, here cover my phone under warranty.

Apparently the cheap Chinese clones don't suffer from random breaking glass. Nor do the cheap no name phones. Weirdddd

With that attitude, you're only scaring away other people that might wanted to share their experience with defective units otherwise. I don't understand the need to bash.

I'm sure we'll get a 'My phone spontaneously bent' post before too long. On a serious note I wish the mods would create the following threads: 'My phone is defective' and 'I damaged my phone and I blame the manufacturer'.

im sure he didnt mean to say the phone breaks by itself..i think he meant that the screen will crack even with a slightest touch to the screen
people keep complaining of "cheap Chinese crap"... This isn't the case. You are misinformed and need to do some research if you believe this. Yes, it's made in China. With Gorilla Glass 4. I wasn't aware Gorilla Glass' strength changed depending on the country it was assembled in.

If that is indeed the case his phone must have been defective when it left the factory, this post would go in the 'My phone is defective' thread. I have touched my screen with various degrees of pressure and no cracks have appeared, my phone is not defective. Anyhow the long and short is we don't need a new post for every single issue, spontaneous or otherwise.

You should learn to read. the Carrier has put the advisory not me.
They have advised us that some nexus 6p owners have reported that the glass panel has cracked spontaneously.
- Points to Mention to the Customer
- we are aware that a small portion of Huawe Nexus 6p customers may be experiencing this issue
This is on Rogers in Canada
Now move along.. the issue is very real .

Bwahahahahahahaha..... Spontaneously bent. That is hilarious.
In total we've owned 10 smartphones over the last 6.5 years. Never has any glass cracked or shattered except one. Droid 2. Was less than a month old and in my wife's purchase. Something hit the screen and caused a tiny crack in the glass and lcd. Fought like hello get it fixed under manufacturer warranty as I hardly call that abuse but to no avail had to go through insurance.
Point is, these are sensitive expensive electronic devices. Even throwing into your pocket with keys in your pocket can cause some damage to it. It's not the manufacturer's fault. I honestly can't believe how people treat their devices. Some don't even realize what they do can damage it. (like my wife just keeping it in her purse.... With 10 different things that can bang into it.) unfortunately we as a society have higher expectations, but have lower expectations for our own actions.
I'm not saying anyone deliberately caused damage and is trying to milk the system (as some do)... But take a closer look at what you do with your device daily. You don't rub your keys against your TV do you? You don't toss your computer on the counter. Unless you can honestly say you have babies the device in cloth since cell minute 1....stuff happens.
