Hi
I'm using my i5500 (Cm 7.1/1.3 with hotfix 1, and baseband LUYJPE) as my primary internet connection, using USB tethering. I have an unlimited data plan.
Whilst using utorrent, downloading will be fine for 20 mins or so, then just cut out. Data & tethering are still enabled on g5, and PC apparently still has a connection. But can't actually use net.
So, I disable tethering & re-enable, and it's fine again. So, it has to be a phone issue, right?
Anyone have any more info, or suggestions?
(I've tried this with Froyo, CM7.1 (1.0, and 1.3) and is there with all.)
Problem still exists, still looking for help/ideas.
Also, I've found that a lot of android phones do this, some say because of USB 1 ports, others because of the number of connections...I'm lost...

It sounds like your provider is capping your data session to me... On Bell Mobility in Canada, some customers have found that when using pda.bell.ca as their APN, the session caps out at whatever value, but when using pda2.bell.ca as their APN, the session isn't capped... It may be worth looking into, just for kicks and giggles...
Yeah, that's what I thought originally.
But...
I can restart traffic by disabling & re-enabling tethering. The phones connection stays active during that time, and data picks up again.
Also, I can download as much as I like at a high rate, providing upload isn't much. A HTTP download whizzes by, where as any torrent crashes.

The only other thing that comes to mind is that your provider may be throttling the connection... You could try encrypting the torrent's connections, and using non standard ports...

I'm a sprint SERO user which I'm sure matters...
Back with the 2.16/2.17 versions I used USB Modem for tethering with USB and bluetooth. However I noticed the latest 3.35 and even DCD 3.0.1 I can't seem to get bluetooth tethering going at all.
Anyone figure out how to get this configuration going? I can get USB Modem to work with 3.35 but not 3.0.1 in USB mode. It gets strange 67 errors.
I tried WModem from PPC Geeks, but those instructions only seem to be applicable for Sprint's ROM.
USB Modem for either version simply refuses to enable in bluetooth mode..
I want to ditch the Sprint 3.35 ROM because it is so ridiculously slow, that it's unusable.

Ok, not sure how familiar you are with all of this stuff, but let's start with this:
There are 2 types of data plans available from sprint for your phone-
Unlimited data on your phone
Phone As Modem (PAM) Data (Tethering, Data Cards, etc).
Error 67 usually has to do with the fact that its trying to use the PAM data profile instead of the phone data.
This was ALWAYS supposed to be the case since tethering was supposed to be an additional service (with an additional fee), not included in your regular data plan. When it would use PAM, you would get charged per kb if you didn't have a PAM plan, since its not part of your data.
Your saving grace is that you have SERO.
SERO does not support the PAM plan. A rep couldn't even add it for you if they tried. So, instead of connecting and charging you per kb and having a huge bill, it just throws you a big old ERROR 67. You're lucky- had you been on a regular plan, it would have worked and possibly got stuck with a surprise in your bill.
How come it worked before?
Here's the loophole:
Our phones will only connect to one type of data at a time.
In other words, if you're already connected to the internet (checking email, web browsing, etc) it will just continue using that connection instead of hanging up and using the PAM one. I'll bet that you probably were always connected already on the 2.x roms (either because of a mail checking schedule or some app that frequently did something online) so you never ran into this problem before.
The solution?
Try opening up PIE and going to a web page so you have a valid connection. Then run Internet Sharing and see if it works. It should continue using your phone connection and not the Phone-As-Modem one.

I had this problem also using dcd's 3.0.1 (which I mentioned in that thread). I understand and agree that the error code 67 usually indicated that PAM was being used. However, it has been determined previously that the Extension registry entry (points to rilphone.dll) was how Sprint was detecting whether you were using PAM or not. I know that dcd mentioned that he deleted this key and any other related tether detection keys, so that leads me to believe the problem is with the bluetooth stack in the Sprint official 3.35 ROM and dcd's 3.0.1 (based on 3.35) kitchen.
Edit: I am now using a ROM built from the PPCGeeks kitchen (based on no2chem's 5054) and I am having no problems connecting using bluetooth PAN from another device.
Bought my atrix at radioshack and then rooted it and took it to the att store to see if i could use the webtop with wifi tether or by adding an apn. Didnt work. Wondering if someone can make a program like 3gunrestrictor to trick the atrix its connected to its own wifi connection somehow. Any thoughts?
I second this.
Sent from my Motorola Atrix 4g XDA app.
I was able to get it to work somehow.
Here is what i did:
1) Created the custom APN for free tethering as described here.
2) Under APN type i put the following: default, dun, tether
3) i made sure my wifi hostspot is working properly (to make sure i setup the APN correctly). Once confirmed i shut down the hotspot app.
4) connected the HD media dock and launched webtop - it tried to verify the connection and kinda got stuck there.
5) i then changed the APN from the one i created to a built in one called "AT&T US Tether". at that point Webtop got access to the internet somehow (an no i don't have a tethering plan, i have an grandfathered unlimited data plan).
6) I immediately switched back to my custom APN after i saw webtop passed the connection authorization stage and voila...it is online via 3G/4G. I know for sure that the webtop is connecting through the custom APN and somehow - it works.

+1 on this behavior...
Although I did not switch back to the custom APN, nor did I specify the APN type. I did go to the ATT website to check my existing plan and still shows unlimited data...
glad to hear you guys got it to work (haven't been able to get that method to work for tethering myself, can't change the MMS Protocol). ok, my dock arrives this weekend, one other question. can ATT tell if I'm going this (using custom APN) to enable tether for the laptop dock? I'm sure I'm not the only one who doesn't want to lose their unlimited data plan. I asked this question once already and so have a couple others buy have not seen a response.
I'd still rather have some sort of ios like app that tricks the phone into thinking its on wifi, but guess that's not possible.
AWESOME
Thank you so much! I also did not have to switch back to the ATT US network, just left it on the custom one described above and it worked beautifully... WITHOUT changing MMS Protocol because it doesn't even show up on my phone.
my account still says I've used 5932.13 MB of Unlimited.
also, I turned on mobile hotspot, and I'm able to share my phone's connection via wifi to my Mac, WHILE using webtop firefox browser on my Atrix Laptop dock... BEAUTIFUL.
thanks again!
glad its working for you guys, i'm still very anxious about att noticing this somehow.
Does changing this affect anything else when just using the phone? if I can the laptop dock working without changing anyway from my tethering plan I think I am sold. Can you post a couple ss of what your pan settings screens look like? Do you have to change back to the regular one to use the phone?
Hello all I am paying for a wireless tethering plan yet the mobile hotspot seems to time out every 12 seconds. It will lode a web site usually half way before my data just drops to 0 kb/s and I have about 4 bars of lte. I don't know if there is a way to fix this, I have tried turning it on and off and rebooting but nothing seems to help this issue. When it stops responding to my computer the device name changes to a * and then it will not send data anymore. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
I'm running into the same problem as well. I can tether through USB just fine but whenever I use the mobile hotspot my internet starts to timeout. I'll be lucky if I can go 5 minutes without it timing out.
Are either of you using Tasker? I had a very similar problem where I was using Tasker to determine when I was home by toggling Wifi to check for my home network and then setting sound profiles. I found that tasker would toggle the wifi which caused my wifi tether to stop working. It would look like it was on, but wouldn't send data. I fixed it by having tasker stop toggling wifi when running my wifi tether app..
Any smart action profiles set? Turn it off & see if it continues.

Mmh, I've got the EU RAZR (don't have to pay to route my connection where I want) and the Wireless Tethering is working flawlessly (HSPA+).
Maybe they haven't used the same software OR they've used the same software but there's a problem when LTE is ON.
Anyway, the EU RAZR is about to get an OTA...and VZW one should as well.

You may be on to something here. I'm going to try to wifi tether on 3G to see what happens.
I'm finding tethering is better with 3g than 4g for some reason.

Setting the data connection to 3G didn't help. It took a little bit longer to time out this time but it still happened.
So I kind of figured out why I'm getting timed out, but I'm no closer to a solution.
When I tether through USB, 4G will stay connected. Nothing wrong with it.
When I tether through WiFI, I time out because the 4G connection drops after a few seconds and when 4G is re-established. The 4G connection does not have data, even though it says 4G. I cannot access data on my phone or on any tethered device.
When I turn off the mobile hotspot, then my 4G will drop again and when 4G is re-established, then data starts to work again.
edit:
Maybe I have a faulty phone. I'm going to try to exchange it this weekend.

I have similar problem connecting a Kindle Fire to a Verizon provisioned hotspot. Web browsing doesnt work but music, videos, apps, and books seem to work. I haven't had a chance to check but on the Thunderbolt we had a similar issue and it turned it to be bad dns server for the wifi connected devices.
I don't have the ability to set a custom DNS server on the Fire so I can't check this at the moment. I'll report back when I can verify if this is the issue with a laptop.
I have a EU razr and I also have problems with Wifi tether - my computer can connect fine but I get "limited connectivity" and no Internet access. Worked without issue on SE Arc with same provider and APN settings.
What other Hotspot apps are out there that hopefully work better?
Same issue.
From what I have been reading on other forums this is a known issue that Motorola is working on and the ETA for the fix is no more than two weeks. We'll see.
This seems to work
I tried the steps below and haven't had a drop in the last 15 minutes. I'm not a network guy so I don't know the reasoning behind why this worked for me, but so far so good. If you're not comfortable messing with the Registry, then don't try this. I used a spare PC to test it first.
Change the Default Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) Size Settings
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Locate and then click the following subkey in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NdisWan\Parameters
3. Add a Protocols subkey (if it does not already exist). To do so:
a. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
b. Type Protocols, and then press ENTER.
4. Add a 0 (zero) subkey to the Protocols subkey. To do so:
a. Click the Protocols subkey that you created step 3.
b. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
c. Type 0 (zero), and then press ENTER.
5. Click the 0 subkey that you created in step 4.
6. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
7. In the Value data box, type ProtocolType, and then click OK.
8. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
9. In the Value data box, type 800, make sure Hexadecimal is selected under Base, and then click OK.
10. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
11. Type PPPProtocolType, and then press ENTER.
12. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
13. In the Value data box, type 21, make sure Hexadecimal is selected under Base, and then click OK.
14. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
15. Type ProtocolMTU, and then press ENTER.
16. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
17. Under Base, click Decimal, type the MTU size that you want in the Value data box, and then click OK. ( I used 1400)
18. Quit Registry Editor.
19. Restart your computer.
On the Razr: Open Mobile Hotspot Settings-> Configure Mobile Hotspot. At the bottom, change the Client (DHCP) start address to 172.168.20.10

Any updates to this? Having the same problem and can't seem to make it work. Don't have a rooted RAZR so can't try the download link.
Hey! I used to have problems for a while with my tethering as well and ANY device I connected just wouldn't have access to the internet. I tried a lot of different apps, methods etc., to get it working and nothing seemed to work. But one day, I tried my own thing. I simply connected my device via wifi tethering (I don't use USB, but this should still work), and then, after it was connected, I simply opened my phones web browser to make sure I could access a data connection in the first place. And lo and behold, my tethering is working just fine!
So to put simply, what you should try is:
1) Connect your device via tethering (I used wifi, but usb should work too!).
2) Make sure you actually have a data connection! And then, open the web browser on your phone, and go to a web page (I just go to google )
3) Enjoy your tethering.
I hope this works for everyone, and not just me! XD
The last update from verizon fixed this issue.

So judging by the quick search, many people have this problem on many different phones, and no solution was found.
I know I've had this problem with my old SGS 1, and even Nexus One.
Same problem on my SGS II, tethering to many different desktops and laptops.
So it seems to be android-specific, or Windows specific problem, really.
Basically, when you tether with USB, first several minutes all is well and speed is good, but in about 5-10 minutes, traffic from the phone just stops.
Phone still shows tethering ON, PC still thinks it's connected, but nothing loads, it doesn't disconnect, it just drops to speed or 0 kbps.
The only way to restore it is to disable tether and reconnect.
Anybody has any idea why would this occur and how to prevent it?
Does it say no internet connection on the network indicator on the bottom right of the notification center? My guess is your carrier has an issue with tethering. I see your on AT&T. Do they have a plan that is specifically for tethering?

No internet connectivity loss is indicated in windows, it still thinks it has a good internet connection. I'm assuming that after a while, it will detect that although there's a connection, there's no actual traffic flowing through it, and will say that there's an issue... but for a long time, it's simply as if I'm connected, but actual speed is at 0kbps.
Browser tries to load pages and times out in 10-30 seconds.
Unfortunately (or fortunately) this definitely doesn't have anything to do with AT&T. I have unlimited grandfathered plan with AT&T and a custom rom, AT&T has no idea that I'm tethering. Internet on the phone is still working fine.
I kinda feels as if the usb tether drivers in windows (RDIS or whatever it's called) simply gives up after a while. Or maybe it's the android tether process that "forgets" what it's supposed to be doing.

Nope, latest CheckROM.
But as I've said, I had same problem with Captivate and other ROMs on SGS2 =(
i haven't found a custom rom where tethering fully works....thats why i went back to stock
Have the same problem on BOTH my Huawei ideos U8150 and my HTC sensation.
My wirelessly tethered devices still work flawlessly but my USB tethered desktop disconnects after a few minutes. Screen time out set to Max in case something in the phone went to sleep but no difference. Definitely not a network problem as my operator confirmed but an android (or windows problem) .
I even set USB Port power settings to always stay awake.
Hope we can find a solution to this.

Looks like Android OS issue.

I had this problem on both my Samsung Charge(Stock app 2.3.6), and my Motorola Razr(Stock app 4.0.4). I believe it is a driver issue inside windows. It seems less of a problem on the Motorola phone as I get a few hours of USB tether before it exhibits the same problem whereas the charge started after a couple of minutes. ie. Phone has data and can access web, computer thinks its connected to the web and okay, but any attempts to connect to the internet from the pc fails.
The wireless tether works fine and does not exhibit the same issues so I would suggest you use wifi tether. I don't know if wifi tether uses more or less power than usb tether (assuming your phone is connected to computer and charging). If I get some more free time in the next few weeks I might try and do an analysis.

I've had this problems with pretty much every Samsung phone I had.
I have HTC One X now, and it doesn't have this problem. So something with Samsung drivers, I think.
Cool fact - HTC even has a one-click reverse tethering. So cool.
I have the same problem, but can't find out, where (windows or android) is it.
What I have:
Motorola Atrix (rooted with SuperOneClick, stock ROM)
PC with Windows XP x64 without WIFI
The only RNDIS drivers I could find was HTC RNDIS (for XPx64)
Situation:
I'm living in hostel for one month, and there is only WIFI internet here, so I tried to get my phone WIFI to tether into USB
What have I done:
Connected to WIFI over phone.
Turned USB tethering ON.
By default WIFI is not tethered to USB, so I found that turning USB tethering ON creates usb1 network and WIFI is eth0. Then I configured NAT by iptables on my phone to accept and forward connection from PC (usb1) to WIFI (eth0). [usb0 on Atrix is for Motorola Portal, didn't try yet to connect to internet throught portal connection, not USB tethering]
The problem in short:
At the begining everything works fine. But when many connection threads are opened (didn't look for that many count) connection stops. As it was already mensioned, PC thinks it is connected, on phone USB tethering is still ON, even more - ifconfig still shows the connection. The only diffrenece is that "ping 192.168.42.129 -t" on PC (192.168.42.129 is usb1 IP on phone) starts showing "Request timed out" messages. On the other side - from my phone, I cannot ping my PC either. So connection is like broken, no traffic can be passed, but both sides sees they are ON.
After turning off USB tethering, PC sees connection is off immediately and the Local Area Connection #23 is gone. After turning on USB tethering everything comes back to the beginning.
Current workaround (for me):
I am using VPS service, so I open dynamic SSH tunnel over putty, and use it as my SOCKS5 proxy. The worst thing is that not all programs can use proxies, and when I use such program it tries to crash my connection.
Sorry for my english, it is foreign language for me, if anything is not understandable or you need more test from me, please ask, I will try to do my best.

Hi,
I had the same problem with my Android Phone - P999 running Cyanogenmod 7.2
I had to go into usb debugging screen to adjust the Display power Settings to - Always ON when Charging - Option.
There is probably some power setting in your device that allows you to do that as well.
Basically Power Saving (Screen Off) Powers OFF the Tether.
Ensuring the Screen is ON while Charging (it charges while plugged into a usb port) ensures the Tether stays ON ALL the TIME!
Hope this helps you.
Took me quite awhile of messing around to find the right option.
I do have a similar problem but it's not time-dependant.
Phone:
Nexus 4 mako
AOKP JB-MR1 Build 6
franco kernel 3.4.0 build #121
Situation:
I use FolderSync to backup my sdcard to my Windows 7 FTP server. The reason for doing this over USB Tether is that I get speeds at around 14MB/s instead of 1,2MB/s over WiFi.
I noticed that it doesn't really matter how long tether is connected and nothing really happens as long as FolderSync is scanning the folders on the ftp server at low bandwidth. However once a larger file is transferred the connection is almost sure to break and show the symptoms described by the other posters (interface still up, just no packets being received at either end).
So I assume that some driver (either on Android or Windows) chokes on certain packets and then just dies. Anyone got an Idea how to tell which device causes the problem to investigate further?
I also noticed that if I had ADB enabled before starting USB Tether that the tether connection on the android will be disabled once the failure occurs.
I have problem with my realme c2 when i connect it to pc via usb tethering, it connects it running ok. if i make screen on by playing youtube or any video on it run but as soon as screen sleep it disconnect after some time
I'm a bit late to this, but for anyone else still having this problem:
in Developer options of my phone(Redmi note 11) under Networking, there is an option called "Always keep mobile data on". Turning this on should fix the issue
@Denav
This doesn't work for me. I have a Moto G Power 2021 and that option is already checked.

Were you able to figure out the issue? I'm having trouble as well. Mine disconnects after a certain time period and the times seems to be random. I've played around with the dev options and other cables and still having same issue. It seems to happen with mac and windows laptops.
When I try to share my mobile data connection to laptop, my laptop can't access internet.
No matter if I use USB or Wifi connection.
Everything seems to be ok, as far as settings are conserned.
Computer recognises and connects ok to the wifi hotspot or usb connection, but can't access internet.
I've tried stock rooted/unrooted and foxhound roms without luck.
Old SGS2 can share net without a problem in sight on every custom rom I've tried. I really need my "lifeline" to work with this phone.
Suggestions anyone?
[ My operator tele-finland sent 2 settings files: internet and wap. Problem was, that the WAP settongs went as default APN... ]
Edit: I've tried Foxfi app with no luck. Seems like there is a signifigant problem with my phone settings conserning mobile data, sice foxfi couldn't verify my internet connection and facebook doesn't automatically update status and youtube app can't load a single video to display...
try this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.tether

Nice app, though it has trial quota and USB tethering only.
But one slight problem... still no internet connection.
Is the only way to (totally) reset mobile data operator settings by making factory reset/full wipe?:crying:

I used to have the exact same problem. However mine got fixed by editing the APN. Try clearing out the 'authentication type' and 'apn type' fields.
Thank you circuit89! My operator had sent me two setrings, internet and wap... Guess which one was chosen as default
Solution was to change default APN to internet from that obsolete WAP
