[Q] Hot Phone on Bionix - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My phone is running extreamly hot. The battery is only lasting 2 to 4 Hours. I am running Bionix 1.31 with the overstock kernel. I am overclocking the phone or doing anything special. I oden back to stock and reflashed the rom. It is still doing it.
I have been running this combo for months with out issues. Is there some cause for the phone to continue to run like this? Has anyone else ran in to this issue

Stop using overstock. Use bali UV version. You should get less heating with the UV.

Thanks are there any good apps to see what if using your battery and processor. I want to isolate the problem.

i started having the same issue with the phone getting super hot anytime the screen was on a few months ago - killing my battery quickly as well (~1%/2 minutes with the screen on, regardless of what brightness or color is showing). i've undervolted like crazy, tried different ROMS, kernals, modems, etc. nothing changes anything.
system panel, spare parts, etc. show nothing out of the ordinary for apps causing it. the phone sleeps normally and otherwise functions perfectly.
i'm beginning to think it's a hardware issue.

[q] Why does swype constantly use cpu when phone is idle?

I installed the paid version of SystemPanel to try and figure out why my phone would sometimes get 30+ hours of battery life and other times it won't last through the night while i'm sleeping. The culprit is swype. Even with my phone idle and the screen locked, swype is just constantly using about 1% cpu for no reason and causing my phone to never truly sleep. Anybody know how to stop this thing from using cpu cycles when my phone display is off? Seems really dumb that a keyboard app would keep running with the phone locked and screen off.
This deserves a bump, I've noticed it as well, it's annoying enough that I'm going to try to do without swype for a while.
Bump. I've never noticed myself, but it sounds like something worth looking into if I could extend my battery life

It just does. No way to not unless you uninstall it.
Its 1 percent. Barely noticeable. You go on android market once and download one app it will drain way more battery. Dont concern yourself with such trivial matters.
Eugenes macnut 14 doesn't come with swype
Why don't you check. That one out.

Trigger 3.3 beta

I just installed the new Rom TRIGGER 3.3-beta. This rom is very fast and the GPS is great. I also put on bali 1.8.4. But the battery drains fast. If you guys tried it out, and found a way to save battery can you please let tell us what you did to control it. I know its in beta version and is being tweaked on.
Thank you
Yea Im using the same Rom. Hate to break it to you but the battery life on most all android devices sucks. I have had 5 different android devices and the battery sucked on all of them. didn't matter if it was stock or custom Rom. ether way these devices just have ****ty battery life. You can make it a little better by turning down brightness and messing with other settings but when it comes down to it. it still sucks! Just my 2 cents!

Did you recondition your battery after flashing? I've had pretty good battery performance with the Bali kernels. I also tend to use the KB1 modem. It seems to give me the best battery. But each phone is a bit individualistic, and what works well for someone may not work as well for next person.

This is untrue as I have owned an android device since the G1. The battery did suck on the G1, but by no means does the battery suck on every android device. My guess is you probably never calibrated your battery or you just used it very heavily. There's also the possibility that every rom you tried sucked on those devices. I have consistently gotten a full day or more with Bionix NextGen V2 with the Bali kernel with moderate to heavy usage. It is true if you lower the brightness, turn off wifi, bluetooth and gps when you aren't using it that it will increase your battery life though.
I have reconfigured the battery and have the brightness turned all the way down. Dont use WiFi but battery still sucks compared to other smart phones.

can any of you post a screenie of this rom pls
Battery usage is hard to compare since there are so many variables. In my experience I generally have better battery life when visiting my parents. The area I live in is somewhat of a black hole for signal and I notice more battery drain here with the same rom/kernal setup and similar usage pattern. I believe the weak signal here causes a higher battery drain over all.
Of course this might not apply to your situation but it could be worth considering.

I'm not going to argue with you, I'm just going to state what the facts are.
THE BATTERY DOES NOT SUCK, MOST LIKELY IS USER ERROR
Lol. It isn't user error. I think you might just use your phone more heavily than others. One thing you have to realize when comparing the battery life of the phones are a) battery size, b) screen size, c) smartphone or stone age phone, d)**** you've done to the phone including ROM's/Kernals/Apps/Sync.
Personally, on days that I am working, I get about 8-10 hours out of my battery before it dies. When I am not at work I get about 23 hours out of my battery.
what is the major difference between trigger 3.2 and trigger 3.3?
Try using overstock instead, I've had pretty good battery life with it.
Im running trigger3.3 beta with overstock and the battery is great.

so any new tricks that you guys have found to boost up this rom?
might try this later, i could say the battery on my vibrant is better then the iphone and ive gone through all versions of the iphone.

bahaha you must be kidding. like someone else said, it depends on soooo many variables and phones. I was running trigger rom and overstock kernel and was going down about 1-2% battery every hour while screen was off. I listen to pandora every morning for an hour to hour and half and would go down 5%. I've sat on the web watching tv on TV shows stream app for about 1-2 hours and went down like 15-20% when brightness is lowered.
It's all about the brightness, killing apps that enjoy sucking battery life and enjoy run constantly, and running an OC/UV kernel. You can also change it from the usual 3g/H connection down to E (edge) which uses alot less power also. Turn off or turn down auto sync on certain apps like facebook from every 10 minutes down to every few hours.
The screen is the biggest power consumer, so lower that, set it to automatic or all the way down to lowest brightness to save quite a bit of battery when using the phone.
Usually the second largest power consumer (if ur not a huge user of just one certain app) is when the screen is off and the phone is syncing and just running android. the solution is If you can find a decent UV kernel (overstock for android 2.2 was what I was using when on 2.2), you can slow your CPU down. Like on my vibrant I made a profile (on the SetCPU app) to undervolt it from 1,000mhz down to a conservative 400mhz max and 100mhz minimum when screen is off. This is very easy to do. sometimes I'd watch shows on that. I usually left it at a conservative setting and 800mhz and 100mhz min all day long when screen was on, sometimes at 400mhz if i wasnt doing much. It worked wonderfully for me.
Moral of the story, there are plenty of things to make your phones battery last longer than it normally would. The big one probably to get a well known kernel that can UV, then get SetCPU and make a few profiles to make your phone use less power.
BOOM!

Phone getting hot and Horrible battery after Gingerbread

On gingerbread It was fine, good battery, no heat.
After reverting back i get HORRIBLE battery like. Like loss of 10% in 10 minutes all the time (Not just 90%)
The phone also gets really warm in my pocket when it appears to be doing nothing.
Any ideas whats causing this?
A rogue app look for a battery monitor and let it watch for like 2 hours and then read what it says
Is causing the problem and uninstall it

Reports nothing abnormal. Still happing though.
Did you try pulling your battery for a minute and putting it back in? I've had this issue as well on stock still have yet to figure out what causes it but the only way I've been able to stop it is by pulling battery and issue goes away...not to say it won't happen again...I'm currently monitoring my phone with system panel and current widget to see if I can find what is causing it if and when it happens again. Which i suspect it will as its happened at least three times now in the past week.

I will try now, The past few days iv barely used my phone so id let it sit and ran System panel and I get like at max .4% usage from the System Process and everything else (about 5 other processes) uses like .1%.
I upgraded bamf today to 1.7 and ill try the battery pull. I hope this fixes it.

[Q] Overheating

So, for the last couple of days my phone has been getting real hot when charging. It's not the battery that's getting hot it's more towards the top of the phone. The phone is less than a month old and I've never dropped it. I'm assuming it's the processor. I thought it might have been a ROM issue so I just switched from Fresh EVO to mikrunny and still the same issue. It also got hot and drained the battery while listening to music last night. Anyone else experience this or have any suggestions. I now have to charge my battery with the phone off.
Are you using a stock battery or a knock off extended one on ebay? Also have you overclocked your phone at all? Some kernels will allow you to overclock. You on the stock kernel?
You can spank your phone pushing it too much and the sucker will heat up.
I'm using a stock battery. At first I was on Fresh EVO with the stock kernel and now I'm on mikrunny with one of the anthrax kernels, but I don't think it's an overclock issue because it really doesn't get hot during normal use mainly when charging. If I charge the phone with it turned off everything is fine.
What's you clock min and max speeds when your charging??? Also are you using a stock charger??? If so try a different charger.
Locked & Loaded
""shooter on Deck""
I haven't changed the clock speeds from what the standard speeds are for the kernel I'm running. I already tried two different chargers and still the same result.

Some of the AnthraX kernels have a problem with overheating. The old v5 ones had it, while the v3 ones did not.
Might want to try another kernel (i heard the unity one doesn't have the problem, and dont think the LeeDroid one does either, dont know if they're compatiable with your rom though)
Agreed. I've had issues in the past with the AnthraX kernels heating up my device. As stated, I'd try and flash a new kernel. Also, what is your CPU scaling set to? I know that IntelliAnthrax (or whatever it's called) was causing major battery drain problems because it would often decide to get stuck at as high of a clock it could. I combatted the similar issues I had by using conservative scaling and a screen-off CPU profile with the max clock set at around 700Mhz. You might even want to try creating a low-clock profile for charging.
If all else fails, at least from what I've been hearing, it could be crappy QC on HTC's end. Sounds like there have been a lot of hardware failures for the Evo 3D.
I don't think it's a kernel issue because I was having the same issue on the stock kernel.

What's the best app to control clock speed? I have setcpu, but haven't used it on the 3d yet.

Ur not alone on this. I have the same issue from time to time. I know it's not the kernel nor my rom cause I had the issue before I even unlocked and rooted my phone. It doesn't happen all the time either. I can go a awhile and no problem and then I get it where it's doing it non stop. Temps like 107 and higher. I've set my clock speed low as hell for changing and screen off. I use the rls 09 kernel that's in the rom I run. I'm not really over clocked either. I have stock battery also and have know idea what causes it.
I'm gonna try underclocking it while charging and see how that works.

I know over clocking can cause heat even a lil bit the phones don't have fans built in to take on the heat from overclocking. Sometimes the phones can get warm if you have big hands and have a good grip on it.
Folks with no overclocking exp shouldn't mess with it.
Tho overclockin the phones I have always thought wasn't a good idea due to heat issues and burnin em up.
On a pc its fine to mess with overclockin due to the cooling effect of the fans or whatever your using to keep the stuff cold.
I set up an underclocking profile for screen off and charging and the hottest I seen it get when charging was 94. I'm ok with that. Also a guy at work has a stock phone and he says his gets hot when charging also.

Cpu overheating constantly

Lately I've been having major issues with my processor getting extremely hot. It only warms up when the screen is on. Normally I wouldn't care but it gets hot enough I can barely touch the screen (over 100° F) and results in major battery drain (battery drain doesn't bother me because in using it, but it still seems too high). Does anyone know a few tips or tricks to keep the temp down? Currently I'm running on AOKP and have the default kernel but I also experience the issue with siyah kernel as well. Thanks I will advance B-)

More likely than not you probably have some kind of rogue app running in the background, but without any more information, that's all I can tell you. Try installing BetterBatteryStats for wakelocks, or tell us what apps you have installed, or a screenshot of what's draining your battery.
Did u full wipe before installing the Rom? If not, there's no reason to post this issue until u have. If u already have, then as stated above,u need to find which app is causing the problem. Definitely not a Rom problem, just an fyi for others who may read this.

I also have been having problems with my cpu overheating. And my screen does not want to turn back on and phone reboots into safe mode. And will randomly turn on and off. Any one has any ideal what could be causing it, and is it bad for your phone to go into safe mode.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
No it's not bad for your phone to go into safe mode, but once again, please provide more details!
It's definitely not because I did not wipe... However I will check out better battery stats I didn't think it would be an app causing the over heating because as I said it only occurs when the screen is on. I was thinking it would be more kernel related (voltage levels or governor related). Thanks tho I'll report back with battery stats

I thought getting hot with AOKP was just par for the course, like the weird keyboard bug.
Mine gets pretty hot all the time, with normal use. I full wipe each update, most recently when installing the update on 7/3. I use Fluxxi kernel as is with no oc or voltage changes. Its hot while using wifi or data, and battery life seems normal.
Over the last 13 hours I have 3% time above 800 MHz, 35 seconds of wake lock for network location.
