Random error 16's? - HTC EVO 3D

Back when Revolutionary was first released, I was lucky enough to not get the dreaded error 16 after obtaining S-OFF. However, earlier today I was trying to call my boss to ask a question when I got error 16 (I wish I remembered the switch number). From reading about it here, I knew to stay on the line and within five minutes a Sprint rep had me back up and running. It was like this woman had ESP or something; she knew exactly the reason I was speaking to her.
Anyway, long story short, is a random error 16 every now and again just going to be a way of life with Sprint now? Anybody else receive a random error 16 lately?

LOL, seems this kicks in at exactly the wrong time. Mine kicked in as I was being detoured around a large wildfire and one of my fellow Assistant Managers was calling about a situation she needed my help on.
The error automatically routes you to the right team, hence the reason for the knowledgeable representative.
I've heard that this is a new software side thing on Sprint to detect cloned phones and works similarly to the Windows Genuine Advantage... Checking software within the phone against various checksums. I was rooted a full month before this issue kicked in for me, and two days after my friend had the same issue. We were both rooting the same night. I would say that the issue is completely random, but once the check has passed you should be fine unless you root again and modify the boot areas of the phone. From what I can tell simply modifying the ROM will not cause the issue to trigger again. Radios might.

First time I've ever got this but today at precisely 2:30 I tried to call my wife and boom error 16 sprint lady was helpful but can't help but wonder if there is some kind of conspiracy? I wonder how many other people received same code today? Sprint is up to something I can feel it.

if you get error code 16 stay on the phone and don't hang up. you'll be transferred to someone. Apparently its a new security feature. But don't trip about it, it has nothing to do with root

It's just to verify that you do belong on Sprint's network and you're not freeloading, which is why they ask for account information and such. Right after I rooted my first 3D I got it, and them right after I rooted my current one I got it. It's just what happens when you go from S-ON to S-OFF. Remember, S stands for security flag checking.

This isn't necessarily true. I had the error 16 yesterday and when i waited it just told me to call my voicemail (which error 16'd) and hung up. glad its fixed now, had to call sprint.

Just is shady several people have error 16 same day I have 4 other people confirming.

I also had this error 16 two times. One time when I first got my phone and 2nd time when rooted. Was also advised by the lady on the other end that its a security feature on the 3D...

When you root your phone, does the phone provision? It could be when the network detects a provisioning on your account?

After I rooted I got the error 16 immediately. While Sprint was fixing it for me, the rep mentioned that this new security feature was gradually being deployed accross the country. I wonder if the folks getting the error 16 yesterday are in the same general area. It may just be that security was deployed to that area recently.

I got Error 16 for the first time today. Mine was after going through regular tech support to correct an issue I was having sending a text though. Would come up Sprint SMS error 97. They reset my data etc on the phone via EPST.
Stayed on the line with the tech support while I was on the cell getting error 16 message. About 1 minute after they verified me and I was back on.
Never got any errors after root, Team Win or Revolutionary.

I just got the error today. It was while travelling to Chicago, my texts just wouldn't go through. I rooted as soon as we could and activated just fine after that. The csr today said it was a security upgrade possibly caused by me traveling out of my normal area.

How many didn't get Error 16?

Title says it all. I had been checking revolutionary.io all day and I'm fairly certain that I was s-off'ed within ten or fifteen minutes of it being released. My 3VO made it through handsfree activation without issue and I haven't had any troubles at all. However, after reading here about all the trouble that others had, I was just wondering how many people didn't have to call Sprint to get their phone working again.
*edit*
For those that have flashed a rom, did you have to go through hands free again or have error 16 after doing that?
same here.. had s-off with minutes of them posting it.. never had to call sprint, worked like a charm.. a little too easy if you ask me..
I did have to do a full factory reset this morning, though. Phone wasn't sleeping, but everything's fine on that front now, too.
S-OFF worked without a hitch, hands free did its thing but it wouldnt make a phone call. I got transferred to sprint and they fixed it in less than 5 mins immediately after obtaining root. I think the whole process start to finish took 15-20 mins. Not to bad!
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
did it first 5 minutes it was up. not a issue. hands free worked fine. i then did a profile update as well as prl as i always have in past. not a single issue.
I had wondered if this would happen with every ROM change....

i don't think so.... or at least I hope it doesn't. My guess is that it has to do with how revolutionary cracked HBOOT.
Everything seemed to be fine, but error 16 switch 691 will not go away. i talked to 2 reps and they couldn't help me. now i got to figure out how to get S-ON back so i can get it replaced.
I did not get error 16

S off worked great for me. Then had errors with calls and sms. I use the Google voice integration and had issues once before. Went to gv page, unlinked my phone. Relinked it. All good.

For me s-off, root and recovery with no issues on both phones however I did have to call sprint for both and I did the hands free activation on both. Just my luck too I got the same rep both times he laughed at me and was like ummmm two phones with error 16?
I also flashed a rom no hands free activation.
no error

Got the error 16. Talked to a Sprint rep and was fixed in 2 mins.

I heard someone say a rep had told them that Error 16 had something to do with new Sprint security measures..
Also, with that in mind it could definitely be a regional or account thing. I had the issue twice 3 days before on my girlfriend's EVO Shift on CM7 (same Sprint acct).. they fixed it no problem but I was worried it was related to her outdated radios and PRL so I flashed a sense ROM and updated those and the problem came back.. so I'm thinking any change to some signature either having to do with your radios or what have you is what causes the problem.
During the week, an Error 16 msg should auto-roll to a CS rep who can help you, on the weekend you'll have to call or chat. I had them fix it via chat for my 3D this morning. Never had a problem with them fixing it.. hope this helps someone.

Honestly..I've returned a few phones and they never checked for root or anything else for that matter..actually i traded in my 4G with s off..I.just flashed back the stock ROM..u should be fine to return it .
no error 16 here
I didn't get any error and didn't need to call sprint. Phone / text work as they did otb.
Thankfully i didn't get it, everything went perfectly.

no error 16 here, was s-off within minutes of the site being up. phone went through hands free activation with no issues and havent had any problems since.

No data, calls or text?

Is Sprint having outages that i don't know about? At least 5 times a week (past 3 weeks) my 3G icon goes away and my signal bars turn gray and i cant call, text or use data. Its extremely frustrating! Its not my bill/service as im always on time and ive NEVER been late or missed a payment so that's not the problem. I just dont get it. Ive reset my phone a million times! What is going on? When i make calls it just says "your account cannot be validated" and all text get rejected. After a couple of hours the 3G comes back and i can make calls. Sprint you're already horrible please dont make me pay cancellation fees because i will.
Anyone else experience this?
Sounds like a tower issue, happened to me months ago, call and complain, got a credit when doing so myself. Worse case scenario they make you hard reset, it doesn't work, they send a tech to the tower and they figure our there is a problem

Thanks for response man. I thought about tower issues but its been happening way too much so i started believing it was my actual phone.
If you go to the official sprint forums you will see many posts with these same problems, so its not the phone. http://community.sprint.com/baw/community/buzzaboutwireless/network-and-coverage

I called sprint and they said my area was experiencing technical difficulties lol, i said "for the past 3 weeks" the rep got silent. Im looking into the big red screw sprint.

Just call for a credit, remember, you can't use unlimited data on Big Red, and if they won't give you most of your bill back, try speaking to a manager and demanding your money back as you were not getting the required service specified in the contract.
EDIT: Remember, go up the chain of commands if needed, and be persistent.

[SOLVED]Activation Issues?

Is it just me or is anyone else having activation issues?
First, I tried activating it with the DEC numbers on the side of the box. Showed up the right Evo4GLTE but it told me I had to contact customer support.
Contacted chat support. They did the ESN swap for me easily but the phone never activated. After waiting and waiting it didn't activate so I decided to call Sprint and get transferred to Tech because I already went through the initial troubleshooting steps with Chat Online.
Tech support tells me to read the HEX or DEC number from the back of the phone. This ends up being DIFFERENT then whats on the label on the outside of the box. Stupid me. Or was it? She goes on to tell me that MY phone is under some other persons name "Karen". She asks me if I got this phone from someone basically implying that I stole it. I explain to her how we've all been waiting for a long time for this phone and this phone is BRAND NEW not even out in stores yet.
So whats the deal? I'm currently on hold with them but to be honest I think HTC or someone ****ed up in the labeling process and now everyone is trying to activate EVERYONE ELSE'S phone. WTF?!
More on this as the story unfolds.....
Update #1: Supervisor in the activation department says that someone screwed up and put the phone in the wrong box and since it's "keyed" into my account... simply switching the esn to my account wouldn't work. He goes on to say that they would have to get me a NEW DEVICE.
No way in hell am I going to let this happen.
Update #2: Had to get transferred to escalations. Janice from escalations told me she had fixed the issue and I should be able to activate it now through the website. Activated it on the website and now I have a functional EVO4GLTE!!
TLDR: Make sure you activate it with the the numbers found on the inside of the phone. Do not use the numbers from the label because they might be different!
when i talked to the guys at my best buy they told me that sprint was having problems activating the lte's today... But i havent picked mine up yet so i dont know..
I had to call them to activate mine as well. Everything worked fine after 10 minutes of the agent doing something while I waited. Sorry to hear about your issue regarding an already activated account though, that sounds quite annoying.

Did the phone start an activation process when you booted it AFTER you entered the DEC number on the web.
If it did not try doing an Update Profile.
I have not tried mine yet. But I just swapped phones around last night and sometimes you need to kick it.
Oh try pulling the battery, just kidding
I wonder if Karen works in Customs.

Yes. I probably should make that more clear on my original post. Activation screen popped up but it never activated because I entered in the RIGHT number that was on the label but the phone had a different set of serial numbers.

Apple strikes again?
Tried the activation menu when it popped up on the phone. I got all the way to the end when it asks to pick which number on the account to activate it to and then failed.
Called in and they were having a little trouble saying something about the phone being applied to a different number on my account. She started to say something about checking that number and then said "oh its the same number".
I'm wondering if it has something to do with LTE or if the device is registered in their system a little different. She couldn't even tell what device it was untill I told her. Then she started asking questions about it. She said there were only a few demos floating around and most reps had never seen one.
Everything's working great so far.

I had the same thing and was able to activate via chat.
I tried to activate online, and it also told me I needed a new plan (coming from the OG EVO.) I had the Everything 450 plan. It gave me a few selections, including the same plan, so I chose it. Then it said I need to call Sprint.
I spent the next 45 minutes on the phone, while the CSR tried to figure out why it was telling her I needed a new plan, and it wouldn't let her transfer the service. Finally, after she said they had 3 people working on it, they figured out that Google Voice was the problem.
She said they'd have to "expire" my Google Voice account, and they weren't sure if I could keep the same GV number when I installed it on the new phone. I told them to go ahead, and it worked. I just installed GV, and it seems to be working fine, with my original number.
She said they'd look into why Google Voice was causing a problem.
Not just you
I also had my evo LTE switched with another persons, it just so happened that that other person was my sister who was sitting next to me getting her phone activated. When she was on the phone with the call center to activate it I noticed all of a sudden "my phone" was activated with her number.

I had the same thing happen to me. I guess when they were verifying the patent they didn't make sure they put the devices back in the correct box. Spent 4 hours with sprint, and 5 different people before they figured out what was going on.
They never told me that they couldn't swap the devices, it was pretty easy once they figured out what had happened. Now it is fully functional
if you were paying attention, and they made you enter a code to edit your MSN, the code they gave you was your MSL. i had a lady tell me three times she couldn't give me my MSL, then followed it with 'now, enter your MSL, it's blah blah blah.' when i asked if the number she just gave me was in fact my MSL, she said 'hold on, you need to speak with my supervisor', then hung up.
that number will make everything easier. i've never had an issue getting it on my other phones, but apparently something has changed . she was adamant about not giving it to me, until she had to.
I thought you had to wait x amount of days before they can just give it to you

Text messages are always delayed?

Why are my text message always delayed? It can takes 30 minutes for someone to get a message from me or they just usually say "pending". I'm on CleanROM ICS. Any ideas on why this is happening? I have full 4G bars.
That's usually a network error

The txt message part is still handled on the old 1X ( cdma ) side of the network. I believe this still applies with 4G; at least at this time.
I have noticed this with being with Verizon starting about 2007. I use to be subscribed to a service that sent me txt updates every few minutes. It was easy to see the delays, and when you got literally 5-8 messages all at the same time, with all the same time stamp, but received by the network at all different times, it was very noticeable.
I complained about this and informed them that this problem never occurred until i got this new phone, so i literally went through about 5 or 6 warranty replacements even a different model without a change. Interesting enough, going back to the old phone the problem stopped.
I took the complaint to the highest level, and they literally had no explanation as to why this was happening after monitoring my traffic. They were stumped. I did some research and noticed that a new cdma chipset came out about a year earlier, and i suspect, but can't prove that is the culprit, and i would bet that that same chip-set or a variation of it is still in use today... my theory anyway.
I emailed my vzw contact, and got no response... imagine that!

if I've helped in any way, don't be shy of that thanks button : )
http://www.speedtest.net/android/210112746.png

How much is this going to cost me to replace?

First, some back story:
On Monday, I attempted to do a profile update. The update failed, and I lost data, texts, and voice. All subsequent attempts to update my profile resulted in either a vDM Client crash or an error 1012, which means that my phone has no credentials on Sprint's network. PRL updates result in the same error.
I have gotten data back, and I can make calls and send texts, but I do not receive calls or texts; if I ever get a text, I'll get it almost literally a day later than it was sent. The only time I receive these texts, I'm roaming.
Usually the solution to this would probably be fairly simple: just use EPST to reset my data profile, or run an RUU. Well, two problems there:
1) EPST does not work. At all. Typing in ANY of the codes does absolutely nothing. I tried it stock (which I have been since I got the phone), and I then rooted and tried other .apks, and then I RUU'd and tried again. Still nothing.
2) The RUU didn't fix my issue; I still cannot complete a profile update or receive calls or texts.
I'm leaving for college in Maryland on the 16th of August, so I need to get this straightened away. I'm going to be too far away from home to have to deal with not getting calls or texts.
I purchased the phone for full, off contract price through Sprint at the beginning of June, since I didn't have an upgrade available. I do not have insurance on the device, and I didn't think to get it because I've never damaged a phone or had problems with a phone before.
At this point I'm convinced that I'll need to get a replacement. The only thing I worry about is how much they'll try to charge me for the replacement. I hope it isn't too much, because this was a fault of their network and not something that I caused. And, since I'm going to college in a month, I don't really have a lot of money to use on a cellphone.
So, to anybody who has had to exchange the phone for a replacement, what kind of fees am I looking at in order to get this fixed?
I had the same problem on my evo lte and on my s3 apparently meid on my number switched my s3 was screwed up called sprint it was on there side for the mix problem they sent me a data reset to my phone fixed the meids apparently and I got everything working back as soon as the phone rebooted give them a call and ask them to reset your phone and fix it on there side
