Hi there,
the next days I receive my HTC Flyer.... how can I be sure which root method I need ? How to check if it got S-OFF ?
I really wanna make phone calls later and use honeycomb >.>
The bootloqder of this test device in this store shows s-on. Can there be something done if s-on ?
This forum has a search function...
I feel gloomy about it when you can't read and search in this forum by yourself
So, use the search function here, read a little bit and you will find the answers. And don't forget to be happy and thankful
Refer. To revolutionary. Or HTC unlock
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
Ah ok so things like GSM Calls are possible either on S-ON or not .... thats great ^-^
Although the amount of information on XDA can be intimidating, you should at least try to use the search function, browse through the Development subforum, and read and educate yourself before making a post like this. If every noob that came on here posted basic questions like this before doing any research, this forum would quickly be swamped with such posts and be completely useless.
I used this guide to get S-Off and root, and its quite easy:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194709
I personally have not tried the HC install. Its fairly complicated, and not without risk. But plenty of folks on here have done it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1248635
My advice, read up and understand as much as you can before starting either process. Then follow the instructions very carefully.
Unsure about Rooting etc... can I make a backup before ? What if Rooting etc. goes wrong ?
Download Tool + Desire = ROOTED ... but this is complicated... I will ask again how exactly is the most secure method to do it ;D

Unfortunately, there is no way to backup the ROM without root. If things go wrong during root, you may be able to recover using the official RUU, following this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1195688
Desire is a pretty old phone. HTC has been adding more and more security against rooting and S-Off for the past year, and its probably only going to get worse (or at least stay the same). So if your intent moving forward is learning how to root current and future HTC devices, you might as well get used to the increased complexity.
The S-Off and rooting guides I linked to is actually quite easy. I think I accomplished it all in about 15 minutes, including downloading the needed files. Really, the S-Off process is just to get your Flyer hooked up properly to your PC, run the Revolutionary app to get S-Off, and that's really it. Its just broken down in very simple steps, to make it very clear. If you look at the step, some of them are not even really steps. Like the first step is "read the documentation", which you should already be reading up as much as you can before you start, anyway.
Once you have S-Off, getting root is just a matter of putting a file on the Flyer, and flashing it. Again, its just broken down into so many steps, to make it really simple and clear.
Installing HC is another matter. I haven't ventured to try it myself, but it looks significantly more complicated and risky than rooting. Its a lot of REAL steps, and the guide itself says its recommend only for experts. If you aren't confident about performing the HC installation, I'd stay away from it until the official update is released.
same like with my desire =) ... but after root, just download clockworkmod and install ROM ?
Ok now I can be precise ;D

You install clockworkmod after you get S-Off with Revolutionary, and before you root. You need clockworkmod recovery to flash the root file.
After root, I would use clockworkmod to backup the stock ROM. But then yes, just flash your desired ROM from recovery after that.
Seriously, there are not a lot of steps or ways to mess them up. Just follow the instructions carefully. Don't mess with the phone (power off or unplug) while its flashing, and make sure you have plenty of battery before for each step (>50% should be plenty).
Yeah but your guides are for HBOOT 1.10 ;D ... I got 1.7 as I said ... thats why I am unsure :/ ....
USB Debug + Fastboot off .... and then ? Revolutionary -> ClockWork -> Backup -> Honeycomb Leak install -> GSM Call Activation ?
Like this ?
FIRST OF ALL, BE WARNED, YOUR WARRANTY MAY BE VOIDED IF YOU S-OFF YOUR FLYER
STEP 1
First, you have to make sure that your hboot version is compatible with the revolutionary tool. (Which yours are not, that adds a few more steps)
STEP 2
Go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1198650 and follow the instructions.
STEP 3
After successfully patching your hboot to the ROM's version on that thread, you are ready to go! Go http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194709 and follow the instructions. PS: Remember to type Y and enter when it asks you wether you want to download and flash clockworkmod recovery. (S-OFF and root instructions are in the thread, just follow them, it's fairly simple)
STEP 4
Your Flyer is now S-OFFed and rooted, go to recovery (navigate from bootloader) and do a backup as you wish.
STEP 5
Download any ROM from this thread and flash it with recovery (navigate from bootloader -> install zip from sd card (Make sure you copied the rom to your SD card)-> Warning: This cannot be undone blah blah blah. YES)
STEP 6
Enjoy and hit the Thanks button if I helped.
#2 AFAIK - You need a Flyer that is HBOOT: 1.10.000

Step 2 in this one in your link ;D ... I got 1.7
There are no v1.7 hboot for Flyer, check again. Yours should be v1.07 and v1.07 is not supported right now.
so I MUST keep Gingerbread and there is NO CHANCE for me to get Honeycomb until release ?
Nope. Just follow the instructions in the second step of my instructions to upgrade your hboot to s-off.

I could do that... But the only thing is that I am unsure about the security.... I am afraid of bricking my Desire ... Then nobody can repair it :/ ....
Isn't there an easier method of making goldcard etc ?

I feel like i'm being a right royal pain in the as* asking this, but will someone please give me a few pointers on where to start with the rooting process please. I know most of you will be thinking "read the stickies and the forum posts" which i promise you i have for nearly two weeks now, but its an absolute minefield of information and i honestly don't know where to start. This is my first Android handset and the first time i have used the Android operating system, and this is the information i can give you about the handset i have, and by the way, its a european gsm handset with no branding and open to any carrier if this helps..........
Its an HTC Evo 3D X515m
Running Android 2.3.4
Software 1.20.401.8, and when i looked to check my HBOOT (i think thats what its called from reading other posts) this is what i see........

SHOOTER_U PUT SHIP S-ON RL

From what i can gather from reading the forums i think i need to first get my bootloader to 1.49.007, and to achieve this i firstly installed a file, which was, PG86IMG.zip onto my sd card, let my handset find it, and reboot in bootloader..........but nothing at all happened. I have no idea if i am barking up the wrong tree or whatever. I also read on many posts that you can unlock using a process on htcdev.com, but there are conflicting views on this, and some people say a lot of roms wont load. I really hope someone will take a little time out to help me with this please, and hopefully once i gain the know-how, i to may be able to help someone else in my situation.....poor devil lol...........Thanks
For rooting your evo 3d you dont need to downgrade your hboot.
The first thing you need to do is to unlock your bootloader, the easy way, htcdev.com
Then you can install SU, and a custom rom, etc., but there is a problem, you cant install roms that came with custom kernels because you are s-on, and if you want to do s-off you need to downgrade your hboot to 1.49.0007.
There are a way to install a custom kernel if you are s-on, you need to extract it from the rom (boot.img) and run it to you phone with adb.
The only thing you need to do is read more.
This post helped me a lot to downgrade my hboot. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1495657
This is for me the best rom for the evo until now http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1245424

In short, you need to downgrade your HBOOT, get to 1.49.0007,
Use this thread to achieve this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1471246
Ask there, if it's possible.
Then use the revolutionary tool found here http://revolutionary.io/
To use revolutionary, click windows (if that's what your on) then run through the process, there is a walkthrough on one of the posts in the dev thread
(this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535987)
it's pretty easy, make sure you have adb installed, or at the least the ability to use adb even without the full sdk.
After that you will be S-OFF (security off) you can also install a custom recovery using revolutionarys tool aswell, do so, leave a comment to tell them it worked and say thank you, always say thank you to people who help u.
Download a decent rom, if your GSM then get mikrunny, if your CDMA then use something else, or stick with mikrunny, pop it on your sd card then go to recovery and flash it.
To do this, turn off fastboot from within the device, power off, when powering back on, hold vol down first and then power don't let go, navigate the bootloader using vol up and down, use power to select, click recovery, back up, then wipe data / factory reset, wipe cache and dalvic cache and then install your rom.
That's it.
PS: The hardest thing you will have to do is downgrading hboot, i've never had to do this but it doesn't look impossible and IF YOU LOOK!, the walkthrough here looks pretty good so you should be fine.
There are threads to help you with things like adb if it seems a little daunting, if you think that they do, then you need to research a little more before you jump in, the worst thing you can do with android is give your phone to someone else and let them do everything, just so u can reap the rewards, get your hands dirty a little and get used to doing it yourself, majority of us did and were better for it.
Assume that your on your own because you will only get minimal advice from questions, no one is going to do it for you.
Good luck m8, you'll be fine
I was in EXACTLY the same position as you (same phone versions etc). Just follow this: http://appcounter.blogspot.com/2012/02/installing-custom-rom-for-htc-evo-3d.html

That even does not work as described, when u are not on the correct softwareversion. Yes, my way does void the warranty. As every way of rooting does....but if you s-off and run a ruu the **RELOCKED** will be gone I think

If you tamper with your phone, using the official method or any of the ways stated here, they will all void your warranty.
My apologies, to the OP i wasn't aware that there was an easier way to get to have s-off etc.
All i know is, the way i wrote will work, if the other way is easier then go with that
Yes, of course all this voids your warranty, but the method I linked to (as far as I understand) would not show RELOCKED when putting back to stock. Which means HTC will honour any warranty claim.
From your guide flashmaniac, the first thing you tell to do is unlock via HTC's method. From what I understand that will show unlocked, and when trying to put back to stock, it will show relocked.
Apologies if I have this wrong, as there is 'too' much information out there, and no clear way of knowing what's wrong/right/possible.
Thanks.

N thats it ...
If you unlock your bootloader the HTCdev way, you will never ever be able to set it to LOCKED without changing the Evos motherboard because this way is a hardware modification ...
But its more secure Anyway Id recommend you to downgrade your HBOOT to .xxx7 by flashing an older firmware, then use Revolutionary to s-off and flashing a rooted ROM will do everything you will ever want!
I also used the HTC Unlock, but I regree doing that ... So please dont do this, because HTC gets your S/N AND your verification, so they´ll always know youve unlocked your bootloader this way...
Apart from that HTC does not charge you if you get a hardware problem because this has nothing to do with unlocking your bootloader ... Do it as you want

Can i say a big thanks to everyone that has offered their help and advice with rooting my device. Sorry i haven't replied earlier but i've been on shifts at work :-( I find the whole process very intimidating, but today i took Flashmaniacs advice and unlocked my Evo using HTCDEV.com, which i must say i found very straighforward lol. Now i think my next step is to work out how to do a backup of my Evo before i go any further, and work out how to flash a rom.........Is that the right order?
I would suggest to order soup first, but it's tasty even without it.

You'll need a package to get SU like this . . . And you'll use it like any other in recovery than you should have root and be able to control what your phone pronpts via SU.
easy
Go to
www.revolutionary.io that is the quickest and easiest way. Make sure you have usb debugging checked, you will also need the serial # and the hboot for your phone, it will either be 1.5 0r 1.4.
Just follow the prompts at that web site, it is super easy, it even puts clockwork mod recovery on your phone for you, if you need help just pm me

Hi, everyone. I hope someone can answer my questions or point me to the thread with the answer to it. Below is the information for my Spint Evo 3D running stock ROM:
Shooter XC Ship S-off RL
HBoot 1.40.1100
Android 2.3.4
HTC Sense 3.0
Software: Shooter_S_Sprint_WWE_2.17.651.5_odex
The last time I did an update of my phone after rooting was early this year. Basically I installed a zipfile provided by a user on this forum (apologize to that user for not being able to credit him) that allows me to get the OTA update on my rooted phone. Now that Sprint released the Ice Cream Sandwich update for EVO 3D, I am looking to upgrade the software again. The main question is...was there a thread for this topic where someone has provided a zipfile to allow updates to ICS for a rooted phone (stock rom)? Would someone please point me to it if they found it (sorry, did not see it)? Second, is the update process the same as before? Do I wipe cache and/or dalvik cache and then just install from zipfile? Any help is appreciated. Just didn't want to brick my phone. Normally I let my sister test things out on her device before I do the same thing but last year she decided to go with Motorola Photon while I sticked with HTC. Help? Thanks.

Hi. Thanks for replying. Please bear with me as I am more of a casual user who barely have any inkling of why he is doing something, only how to get to S-Off, rooted through developers who provided step-by-step guide for "Dummies who want to Root their Phone". I have been in contact with Ramjet73 who is really kind to answer my questions but I am trying not to bother him too much hence I am trying to pass on any further questions that I have to other users such as yourself. So...thank you in advance.
From what Ramjet73 told me, I can just run the RUU.exe for 2.89.651.2 (Sprint ICS build) since I am S-Off. However he then inform me that I need to download a custom bootloader and custom recovery. This supports your comments that I will lose recovery and root after update? Ramjet 73 suggested a custom bootloader from ENG or JBear. How is that different from the bootloader that you suggested in your reply?
I assume that after I update both the ICS RUU and the custom bootloader, I will remain S-Off and rooted with superuser status and apps such as titanium backup and wifi tethering operational?
As for custom recovery, Ramjet 73 suggested 4Ext Recovery which I assume is 4Ext Recovery Updater (if I want a free version) or 4Ext Recovery Control if I am willing to pay for more options. Now in the past, I haven't really install any custom recovery other than what was installed when I used Revolutionary's tool to turn my phone to S-Off. I believe that installed Clockworkmod which I access when I boot to it using Power+Vol Down. Is Rom Manager the newest equivalent to that? What is your opinion on 4Ext Recovery vs Rom Manager.
So to summarize, I run the RUU.exe for ICS upgrade. Then I flash a bootloader like you recommended in your reply or one of the custom bootloaders from ENG or JBear. Then flash a custom recovery and I am all set? Sorry for all these questions and I hope you can help. Thanks.
I'm looking for a cut and dry answer to this as well. I'll be monitoring this and if I see or figure out anything first ill post here.

I thought I made it as "cut and dry" as possible:
1. Flash the 2.89.651.2 RUU (.exe from Windows or .zip from the bootloader if you prefer that)
2. Flash the JBear Sprint ICS (1.58.5858) bootloader so you can use fastboot commands
3. Flash 4EXT recovery using the "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" command
4. Flash the superuser.zip of your choice or a custom rooted rom from 4EXT
I have more detailed instructions in my guide and a single download with the software you need for each of these steps.
Is there something that you don't understand about these steps, or are you just waiting for someone else to confirm that they work?
Edit: If you are looking for another way to do it you can follow the steps in this post, but you will wind up with the stock 1.58 bootloader and won't be able to run most fastboot commands unless you flash a custom bootloader. It takes about as long to flash the firmware, superwipe and ROM in that post and still flash a custom bootloader as it does to perform the above 4 steps, which I believe give you a cleaner ICS base, but it's up to you. That option will save you from having to reflash recovery.

No problem.
I was actually responding to sullivan7221 because I thought all his questions were answered in my guide thread and then I saw his post in this thread that seems to be asking the same things. It's no problem if he wants consensus from more people, but I did take exception to his reference to a "cut and dry answer". I know that Samsung and other brands have simpler "one click" processes for rooting because I've used them myself, but I've tried to refine and simplify the root and S-OFF process for the Evo 3D as much as possible, and I tested a "one click" root utility that popped up in this forum a few weeks ago and it didn't work.
I understand that you and sullivan7221 aren't looking for root and S-OFF since you both have that already, but it's still important to use a reliable and consistent method for upgrading to the offical Sprint ICS build, which may not be the easiest.
Good luck with your upgrade!

Well...HELP! I successfully update my phone to ICS (not so hard). Then I hit the wall called "Step 2" and promptly bounced right off on my ass. The first thing I try to do was flash the jb_boot.img through fastboot cmd. I put my phone (which is still S-Off like you said, H-Boot 1.58 with "Locked" all the way up top) into Fastboot then connected my phone to usb, resulting in Fastboot USB. Then I use the command "Fastboot flash boot jb_boot.img". Then the problem happened. It said:
writing 'boot'
failed (remote: not allowed)
From discussions online, I also checked to see if it sees my device using 'fastboot devices" and it seems to recognize it: "HT179..."
How do I unlock my bootloader? What did I do wrong? I have the jb_boot.img and jb_boot.zip from your file and the pg86img.zip that was recommended by the poster above containing a radio.img. Any other way to flash it?
Help?

Well...color me stupid (and an ass) for not reading in depth ramjet's guide. From ramjet's guide, I went to mpgrimm2's "Evo3d(CDMA)HBoot/S-off Differences & Rooting Background Info 9-25-12" thread which eventually lead to ramjet's post with all the different bootloaders available. As suggested, I used JB's ICS bootloader and now in the bootloader page, it no longer say "locked" but "JuopunutBear" now. Onto flashing recovery.

Help?

Okay, final update for those looking at this thread. I now have stock ICS, remained S-OFF and have superuser access. Basically I followed ramjet who was helping me out. The first thing that someone in my same position who wants to do the same thing, should navigate to ramjet's guide: (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1889438). Download his file (QADERSO.zip) and unzip it.
1) I turned on USB debugging on my phone and connected to my pc using "charge only" option.
2) I clicked on RUU.exe file in ramjet's QADERSO\RUU folder which then update my phone to ICS. When I access the bootloader, it now said "Locked", then "shooter xc ship s-off RL" and finally "Hboot1-58.5858". So now i have ICS, still S-off but with an upgraded locked bootloader.
3) Then I copied the custom bootloader "PG86IMG_jb_hboot_Sprint_ICS.zip into the root directory of my sd card (the zip file can be found in another of ramjet's post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30014044&postcount=7) and renamed it PG86IMG.zip. Once you go into the bootloader, the zip file will automatically update. Now instead of "Locked" on the top, you should have "JuopunutBear".
4) First remove the previous zip file from the directory. I put the "SuperSU-v0.96.zip" from the QADERSO\Root folder in the root director of my sd card again. then i access my bootloader once again.
5) I went into fastboot and then connect to my Pc with usb. It should now say "Fastboot USB".
6) you can now flash any recovery img that you want. This is where I differ from ramjet's suggestion of 4ext as I did a backup of my system before all of this with clockworkmod recovery.
7) once the recovery of your choice is installed, then just install the supersu.zip file from your sd card and you should have a rooted phone.
Thanks to ramjet for his guide and his help. Now onto my next problem. going back to the state I was before updating to ics. Posting another thread about it. Anyone who can help out, please do. Thanks.

search hasnt been working lately, i myself keep getting the gif of the cat reading.
I would like to second the OP question, i think its time for me to root also....
Check the sticky roll-up thread in development to get the basics (the basics never change), then if if you have specific questions, it will be a lot easier to give direction.

Maybe I missed something, but why do you think that's out of order?
You can't flash an alternate recovery until you have unlocked the bootloader. You can't root without a custom recovery. You can't get S-OFF unless you're already rooted with a custom recovery and an unlocked bootloader. So, it would seem to me the proper order is:
1. Unlock the bootloader (via htc dev site).
2. Flash a custom recovery such as Amon Ra, TWRP or Clockworkmod Touch (I prefer the first; Flyhalf has done a decent job porting the other two).
3. Get S-OFF via the Juopunut technique.
Recognize that each of these steps may erase your data and/or your sdcard, so read instructions CAREFULLY. They are meticulously spelled out so that you don't make a mistake. For instance, you need a different sdcard to do the S-OFF trick. If you use the sdcard you usually use, you will erase it. IMost mistakes that arise are from users who don't pay attention somewhere along the way.
Links to all of these things are very easy to find on in the Development Forum, the first sticky roll-up thread. And, yes, you ought to use search....liberally.

Regarding the 2nd step. I suggest flashing Cleanrom before attempting to s-off. Will get you acquainted with the s-on techniques used even before hand. Trust me both s-on & s-off have their advantages over one another. Then you can use CleanRom to obtain s-off as one of the prerequisites is a rooted rom with an unsecured boot(which it has).
Hi guys!
I read the forum, then read some more. And then read sticky topics and other links....
... and I'm totally confused now!
I want to root the phone, so I can manipulate the memory of it. That's it. I don't want to lock, unlock, S-off, flash or whatever the term it is for whatever action.
Is there a glossary on those terms, readable by a human being?
What I need is the Game CIH to work, so I can get more money/coins/lives/whatever in my games.
For that, I need the phone rooted.
And there we have it Now you know what I need, so if there's someone that can tell me 'go follow THIS tutorial' or 'read here', I would be very grateful!
This is most likely already poking my eyes out, but I have no idea what ROM flashing is, nor why would I want S-OFF instead of S-ON....
Help!
AW: What do I need for root?
If u only want root you dont need s-off
S-off gives you the ability to flash everything, even another bootloader
but if you dont even have an idea about that, better stay away from that
Heres a list of those terms :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Glossary
Do u have a GSM or cdma phone?
This guide is for GSM, the part of unlocking+root should be the same for cdma , but if you are cdma better wait for another cdma user just to make sure

You need to unlock your bootloader to flash superuser^^
Thank you! That was quick
I wish there were more people like you, Quantenhall
Only one thing confused me, though...

You said root does not need s-off, but superuser does.
I was under the impression root = superuser
I suck at Linux, so don't curse me

No, i said you need an unlocked bootloader
That is not the same as s-off
S-off is only needed if you want to flash aosp roms one day
Just follow the instructions of the second link (a+b) and you will have root access
But make a backup first
Conclusion:
1 backup (adb , there are tools for that, i think one was named ultimate backup tool, if you dont find it search for Android 4 backup without root or similar)
2 unlocking bootloader (htcdev, a from link)
3 flash custom recovery(adb , b from link)
4 flash superuser (copy to SD, boot to recovery, install zip from sd)
That should be all for root

I managed to understand the instructions you linked to, but it's good to have a summary just to make sure I did indeed understood everything as I should have
But there's a problem :/
B4. A link to recovery on mediafire is dead :/
And I don't have 10 posts yet, so I can't post in dev forum and ask OP to make an update.
On the other hand, he clearly stated he doesn't read private messages regarding other people problems :/
I'll go if I can be useful somewhere else on the forum and get myself up to 10 posts
Any recovery made for your phone should work. I would recommend 4EXT Touch Recovery. I uploaded it here for you http://www.mediafire.com/?702ttkdggk69g3i so just unzip it and use the recovery.img as the instructions imply.
Do note that I downloaded this recovery via their app I downloaded from 4ext.net using an Evo 3D CDMA phone. I do know 4EXT works with both CDMA and GSM phones but I can't be certain if they use different recovery.img files.
Thank you all!
I successfully rooted the phone, thanks to you!
Actually, not only you, mostly the guy who wrote the crazy good tutorial!
But without you my mojo wouldn't be enough to make it through
I unlocked the bootloader via htcdev.com, then flashed recovery image and finally ran superuser.apk.
I'm in the process of restoring all my data back to the phone at the moment, and this should be it I guess
Thank you so much for your help, going through the process once really put all the pieces together for me.
Now I really know what some terms actually mean
So... if I would like to install different OS (CWM, CM...), it's much easier now, right?
I should go to recovery and say "install from a file" and select my new OS?
I think so... but nevermind, I'm done with the questions. You've both been more than helpful already
P.S.
Oh so many smilies... can you tell I'm happy?
