How come the galaxy s ii is so big? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Do'nt you thin the galaxy s II is unnecesary big ? i come from an inspire 4g which as a slightly larger screen 4.3" vs the 4.27" screen on the galaxy s II , yet the inspire 4g is shorter , the galaxy s looks at least 5 mm taller , i think the top bezel is wider than it should be .
The weird thing is that comparing both phones , the inspire looks a lot wider, almost as if the galaxy s were fwvga
I know it has been mentioned a lot of times bug damn i really miss the notificaton light , cant believe Samsung decided to skip it after they got so many backlash for the lack of a notification light in the original galaxy s II

If galaxy is too big for You why You bought him...?
Wysłano z GT-I9100

I take it you wont be getting a Galaxy Note then ?

HTC Inspire 4G
122.9 x 68.1 x 11.7 mm
Samsung Galaxy S II
125.3 x 66.1 x 8.5 mm
Yes it is 2.4mm longer, but more comfortably 2mm narrower. And don't forget the 3.2mm thinner.
By making it so thin they have to put the components, including the Front Facing Camera, someplace. Making it longer is possibly the more desirable way to do it.

Big i don't notice in use .

i know its a big phone but i already had a big phone, i just find it it funny that a phone with an "smaller screen" its noticeably larger than a phone with a "bigger" screen

Sounds reasonable , i'd swear it feels longer than just 2.4 mm, like 5 mm, regarding those 3.2 mm of thinnes between the devices, the sgs 2 feels WAY thinner i cant over that

I believe the inspire uses a different aspect ratio on the screen, the sgs2 has a 15:9 ratio while the inspire probably has a 14:9 ratio making it wider yet shorter. The sensation has a 16:9 ratio and is 1mm narrower but a bit taller than the sgs2.

Must have small hands OP. I find it very comfortable.

Size feels fine to me, can easily operate with one hand.

I wish it wasn't, imagine how much battery life will go up if they used all that space for bigger battery.

that's what makes the phone manageable , all my friends were deceived and think the phone it's smaller tan my inspire 4g, because of the weight and how thin the device is, a 1850 mah battery like the one found on the galaxy s II lte would have been nice tough

with that 1850mah i doubt it will increase the standby as the processors are 1.5ghz.

Its a little big, but not huge either. My point of view, a 4.5" display is too big but a 4.3" is tolerable.

Bah, bigger is better, I want the galaxy note, 4.3" is still a bit small for reading web and playing games.

Size does(nt) matter?

Dear lucky SGS II owners,
i'm thinking to replace my beloved N1 with a SGS II. The only thing is: I'm a little bit hesitant because of the size of the device. How does it feel while you have in in your trouser pocket? Usually I just put it into my pocket (without protection case or similar). I had the chance to play with a DHD and HD2, which are having similar sizes but weren't able to make a reality check with them (both were tied at the store-table).
Whats your view on this? Thanks in advance,
das_spektakel
IMHO you cant really feel it in your pocket, I find the device thin enough and light enough that it doesn't feel like you are carrying around a brick.
Although I have had to check a couple of times that I have actually put my phone in my pocket as you can forget its there...

Wow, thanks for your fast reply. A step further in buying it
First time its bigger next time you no longer notice .

phone size with 4" screen and phone size with 4.3" screen is only a "little" bigger!
but your eyes will notice the HUGE .3 screen difference!
this is why i will never buy another phone with screen less than 4.3". wait, galaxy S2 is only 4.27" but i'm really unhappy with my htc inspire, that brick is heavy!, not comfortable to hold!
It's bigger than my old HTC Desire (same as your nexus one), but it's also lighter (116g vs 135g) and thinner (8.49mm vs 11.9mm). So really it doesn't feel like you're carrying a huge phone.

i agree, i had desire hd before and even tho the screen is the same it not only feels smaller to hold the thiness and weight makes it a sleek size handset that you wont find anything like this.
i found the desire hd big, fat, heavy brick and soon moved to iphone 4, now SGS2 and i couldnt be happier!
Thanks to you all for your replies. This is very convincing - so......... let's buy it
Yea thanks guys. Ill be getting one of these bad boys next week.
Cant wait to start modding and theming it.
I've been absolutely fine with the pocket size, and I love the additional screen size. The only slight downside is that I find it a bit harder to hold with one hand - I used to be able to hold the Desire comfortably between the base of my finger and the top knuckle, IYSWIM - the SGS2 is just too big for this. Not that that makes me likely to give it up though . . .

[Q] Current trend of "bigger is better" is actually worse?

Hi wrote such a good and long message here and i clicked the backspace by mistake and it's all gone ):
I wrote that i love the vibrant because it's so light and small (relative to other, newer monsters).
I was asking if there is any device out there that has the same dimensions and weight yet is new and has all the new hype - dual-core, higher res display, 8 mega pixel and so on...
I think the Galaxy S proportions are the IDEAL ones when it comes to practicality
You know control + z is undo? Backspace doesnt have to be the end of the world
Sent from a cell tower to the XDA server to you.
What about the point though?
hahah
Sure, personal preference is important especially with ergonimic details like size, weight, and finish; but software and bandwidth is always evolving so hardware needs to keep up, and 10 years ago plenty of people whould have said that the existing phones were perfect but many of those same people are now using smartphones and would rather not go back to 10 year old hardware.
I don't know of any 4" phones that are any more up to date than the Vibrant. I kind of just accepted that my next phone will be 4.3". I don't think I would want to go bigger than that. The T-Mobile Galaxy SII is hideous. No if ands or buts about it. Same res as my 4" phone, but more than a half an inch bigger? No thank you.
Sent from my rough sketch of a Vibrant on a brick.
SGS 2 is surprisingly small. It is thinner that the vibrant and the dimensions are not all that much bigger. Felt the same when I put it in my pocket.
So far the Samsung Nexus looks very interesting, bigger screen but only because they make more use of the space, no buttons anymore. Also the bezel is smaller, so the screen can have more space, although the phone itself does not get really bigger...

Which SII version are U referring to?
I know that the international version is 4.3", but is there a US carrier that has the same 4.3" size?
T-Mobile's is 4.52 and so does ATT (i think)

AT&T's is only 4.3", but I can't bring myself to switch to AT&T... yet.
My complaint isn't really about the bulk of the phone, but more that when you look at the T-Mobile SGSII with the screen on, the icons are spaced abnormally far apart. Instead of enlarging the icons proportionally, or adding an extra column to the home screens, they just spaced them further apart, and it's ugly.

No, but the diagonal measurement of the screen is. Actually it's 0.56" larger if we're talking about the Vibrant vs the SGSII.

HTC amaze far superior to SGS2

I used the nexus one for two years EXTREMELY HAPPY. until I dropped and broke it. So I went to buy a phone and I was initially going to buy the amaze, but for some reason my brother, the strore owner and my mom all loved samsung so I said fine. I HATE THIS PHONE.
i've had the sgs2 for about two days and can tell you from all the research i've done and shots i've taken. my moms my touch 4g takes better pictures. my nexus pictures comes out almost the same clarity sometimes even better. I did some research, and this is what I did not know, If you guys knew anything about camera's the HTC amaze comes with a backside illuminated sensor only one other phone has that and that's the iphone 4s. the aperture on the htc amaze is also f/2.2 compared to sgs2 which is around f/2.7 and better than the iphone 4s which is f/2.4. the lower the aperture the more light the camera lets in and thus better picture quality comes out.
As far as the phone itself goes I hate the SGs2, not because its a bad phone....samsung is just retarted with all that real estate I can only see like 6 contacts on a screen at a time and in many screen everything is blow up and cannot be changed unless you changed the density of the phone after rooting, which messes with the programs and doesn't show them correctly and the phone itself. but when I did this, the contact screen and the settings screens looked amazing, they showed, the dialer was about 1/4 of the screen and the rest was black (this is what I mean about messing things up changing pixel density) with the superamoled plus I have changed the densit of my phone to 160 from the original 240 and EVERYTHING looks VERY crisp BECUAUSE OF THE EXTRA SUBPIXELS...everything on the SGs2 looks TOO BIG stock...its like a kids toy, that screen can hold 25 icons easily instead of the regular 16 or whatever (as I use launcherpro to cram the icons) even the notification bar is too big...sure it has a big screen but if you have a smaller phone that gives you the same effect (5 or 5 contacts in one screen etc. and same amound of icons like my old nexus one) I'd take the smaller phone over the sg2 that does not use the big screen efficiently AT ALL so i don't have to lug a big thing around...some programs like the web browser and messaging you can decrease font size and it is still perfectly clear and crisp due to the extra subpixels even though its a 480 by 800 phone, I don't understand why samsung didn't make this an option for the entire phone. there's nothing superior in the galaxy S 2 over the HTC amaze, besides having better color on the screen than a qhd lcd (which some say is better) and being lighter....touchwiz 4.0 has nothing over sense either... even the lockscreen is crap on touchwiz, I had to buy widgetlocker pro to use instead of the regular one. the build quality of HTC amaze is sturdy and nice, yes a little heavier than sgs2 which uses all plastic...I plan on getting a case for either one so I don't care if its made of plastic or metal, if you're going to argue the dropping the phone is better with plastic.
The amaze also packs like 4 microphones while the sgs 2 has 2. the sgs2 speakphone is very muffled and crappy, where the htc amazes is extremely clear.
I am so pissed with such a nice screen on this phone samsung could have lowered the density and given us much more for the real estate instead they were just lazy and kept the same old thing. It like me having a 50 inch monitor that is can show crisp at lower resolutions but I limit the system to having a lower density or resolution. Maybe some people like the BIG OLD spaced out icons and contact list, but I'm not a 90 year old person who needs a big icons and fonts like that.
as far as the galaxy nexus goes I have not seen one yet, but samsung again cheped out on the camera and the processor. it has a 720p pentil amoled, which is yet to be determined if it will prove to overcome the pentile downfall.
also the amaze has a dedicated camera and camcorder button.
I hope as they update to ICS they can change the density of this screen, then I might think about keeping the phone...otherwize I'm going to HTC amaze or something better that comes out by then.
I don't hate samsung, infact I love samsung TV's better than all TV's and have a galaxy tab 10.1 which is running stock honeycomb and will never upgrade to touchwiz. Samsung shines in screen quality thats all they know how to do. ( The camera department and software department of samsung is lacking, as well as some hardware. now If they can only get the software department to use the very nice screen the way it was supposed to be used...if you count the subpixels on the sgs2 and the htc amaze. They both come out almost equal. with and edge actually on the sgs2. learn how to use your screens samsung!!!!
Thanks for listening to my rant.

So you write this to convince yourself to get the amaze. as much as opinions go, you state the camera is better and screen real estate could be better as well as pixel density. It's pretty clear this phone is not for you. If you're within buyers remorse why not just return it if you feel this opinionated and unhappy with it?

Meh... enjoy being able to fry an egg on your HTC phone & having to carry a charger with you everywhere you go.
This reminds me of waaaaay back in early 05 when I was devving for the Sidekick II. The Treo 650 had just been announced and I was sick of having to hack the hell out of my SKII just to get ringtones on it, so I was gung-ho to get a T650. I went to the Danger forums & posted a long rant just like this about how much I hated the SKII & how I was gonna get the T650 as soon as I got paid. Lets just say that we've been MUCH nicer to the OP here than the Sidekick crew was to me xD Their general (and cleaned up) response was "don't let the door hit you in the ass, *****". Granted, I WAS happier with the Treo, but yeah... bashing a device IN that device's home forum- not the best idea! lol...

I'm sick of HTC. I've had the N1, MT4G, and the Sensation ALL with some type of dust under the screen problem with the sensation being the worst (which is why I got rid of it as soon as I noticed and picked up the SGS2 and am damn happy about it). I did love those phones, especially the beloved N1, but I can't stand seeing that dust when the screen was off or if I used a dark wallpaper. The only thing I do miss is the qHD and CM7, but the SAMOLED makes up for the screen and cyanogen himself said CM is being worked on already for the 989, so I'm pretty stoked for that too.

[Q] Why do we need Larger Screens?!

Am i the only one not liking the fact that android phones are getting bigger and bigger( sure slimmer), what happened to the compact aspect , after all it is a PHONE .i personally think that there should be more MID-HIGH-end 3.5-4.1" screen phones coming in the future.
especially when the Vibrant is reaching its limits running android's latest and greatest.
i just wanted to know what everyone else thinks about this.
I really like 4", but could live with 4.3" it resolution kept up. The latest GSII for T-Mobile is the same resolution as my phone, but more than .5" bigger. No thanks. The GNexus with its bigger screen at least upped the resolution, so I have considered that, but only Verizon offers it subsidized, and there's no way I'm moving to Verizon!

agreed, a "retina" like display would be nice, i would consider nothing more than 4.2, and that's with the screens taking up good amount of real estate on the front face of the phone
UPDATE:considering 4.5 now, depending on how JB is and if its 1080p.
Ya I think 4.3 is the Max I'm willing to go so its gonna be interesting to see what the manufacturer's do

having played with the sgs2 & the galaxy nexus.. i agree that the 4.5" screen on the sgs2 feels a little worthless since it's the same resolution.. but the galaxy nexus at 4.65" doesn't feel too big
without the bezel/frame, i think the 4.6 or 4.7" range is actually reaaally nice. the nexus is barely bigger than my vibrant but the screen looks a lot nicer
cant wait to hopefully pick up a new phone to replace my vibrant in august when my 2year ends with something between 4.5-4.7" and 1080p resolution
I need a larger screen because I'm getting older ;-)
You need a larger phone so you know how big your youknowwhat is and you don't have a ruler around.

i know you can get used to it if you use it enough. but the most i will go is 4.5" that's with little or no bezel,
a super amoled 1080p with high ppi=worthy upgrade from the vibrant
SGS3! do not let us down..
Why do we need larger screens? (considering that it's one of the most power hungry pieces and the batteries still are in the 1500-1700mAh range).
I don't have any idea, Vibrant's screen is more than enough, there's plenty of space for surfing web, reading ebooks, casually playing games and so.
I can barely hold the phone with one hand while using the thumb on the touch screen, a bigger phone would bring nothing to me.
It's a phone. If you want more headroom, get a tablet.
I also think 4" hits the spot on a phone.
Sent from my T959 using XDA
don't mean to bash on anyone but although I love my vibrant to death, the increased screen size is amazing on phones I've played with ONLY if the resolution makes the upgrade as well..
personally hoping for a screen between 4.5 and 4.7" for the SGS3 with a bare minimum of 720p resolution

According to that genius man's statement, you probably have a 4" youknowwhat.
I was actually thinking the same thing. Honestly i want something between the galaxy s ii's size and vibrant's size.. Vibrant is alittle too small and the SGS2 is a little too big
I have to tell you watching 720p MKV video on a Note is awesome. And its screen is night and day better than the Vibrant. It makes big different for everything, typing is easier, web browsing is easier, maps are wider, easier to read and more text on a page, not have to zoom in all the way to read pdf, much easier to control game's onscreen controllers.
Of course, as things pass 4.3 its not possible for single hand usage anymore. It's Android, at least you get a choice unlike Apple, there will be manu that will still make 4", if you don't like larger phones don't buy it. Or buy iPhone.
I do think as a handheld phone, above 5" is overkill though, so is 1080p at 5" (it will happen anyway), the text would be unreadable, they would probably raise the dpi to 440, the Note is 320. I think a good compromise is for Samsung to make for two categories, 4.3“ and 4.8". 5.3" is just too much.
It's like asking why you need 24" computer monitor when you are still using 15". Once you use it you will appreciate the screen estate. Also the new larger screen Galaxy are slimmer than the old ones. The Note is very thin.

I agree that it has its benefits over smaller screens, but I think the market also wants something that's more poket friendly, I seen the note in person and its beautiful but its tablet more than phone..
Besides I want android not ios. And that is why I'm sticking with good ol' vibrant,
next iPhone will be 4" I foresee it
I used to have a 15" monitor then upgraded to a 25.5" its worth it because monitors are stationary so bigger is not a problem...plus a jump to 1900×1200 Res from 1360×768 yes please.

The 6-inch HTC One Max Might Be Around The Corner

Hey Guys!
I don't know if you guys have heard about the upcoming 6-inch HTC phablet, HTC One Max. Well, i was reading this article and it says that HTC One Max may launch this September and it might go face to face with the upcoming Samsung Note III. What do you guys think about this? Would you go for a smaller HTC One mini or would you prefer a larger HTC One max? This is just so interesting. I would love to know what are your views about this.
For me the HTC Max is just too big. And the HTC Mini is not really mini is it? It's 4,3 inch screen is actually not thát small compared with the One's current screen. To me it's just a cheaper version of the current One, a midrange model to bring the HTC One experience to people with a smaller budget. The current One is still the best for me

Great! I might finally be able to ditch my messy Note 2 fo a real phone
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
The 4.7" of the HTC One is a bit small for me (currently using original note) and 6 inches would be far too big for one handed use. For me the note is the perfect size at 5.2", I hope HTC go for 5.5 or 5.7 at the most with a slim bezel to reduce the footprint.
I have big hands and 6" would be ridiculous, there is a limit...

Fully agreed. 5.5" would be perfect IMO. Coupled with a beautiful design, they could probably pull a lot of users away from the Note. This would be a MUCH better route to go over releasing a revised One in 6 months. Putting the One and a larger option on the books for yearly refreshes would be a solid move to make.
Also agreed that 6" is simply too large for daily use. The Note just about pushes the limit.

The Note itself doesn't sell "a lot." It sells at 15% of the SGS3/SGS4. The masses don't see the need for a giant phone; especially those that already own tablets which is 35% and growing. If it weren't for S Pen/S Note and multiview which need a larger display to work well I wouldn't own a Note either. The OG Pro hasn't been selling very well on AT&T. Giant phones are great for gaming, media, browsing, and reading but not being able to use them one-handed makes them a PIA for typing and calls. And they are still too small to be a true tablet replacement. The Note has an inductive display which supports true inking, the XZ Ultra doesn't and if the One Max doesn't people that buy the Note for S Pen won't be interested. And the Mega which has a bigger screen than the Note and One Max costs less because it has slightly lower specs. Giant phones will always be a niche and the iP5 with its 4" display is still a best seller which is why there's a SGS4 and One "mini."
The difference between the One Mini and Max vs. the IP5 (and new iP5s) will be similar to this.
This might have me jump to the phablet world.

The only way is give up my One for this is if the battery life is at least 50% better.
Snapdragon 600 is good enough for me. I just want longer battery life.

Not a phablet fan but the more business it takes away from Samsung the better.
I feel like with two boomsound speakers there is no way the screen is 6 inches. I'm thinking the device is going to be 6 inches total with a 5.3 inch screen

HDR Mic
If the One Maxx will not have it, or a mic that is at least close to it, I will not ditch my One. It just amazes me that I can record concert scenes with no problems on the audio

If the One's not taking business away from the SGS4, what makes you think the Max will take business away from the Note? Not being snarky but if HTC's bread-and-butter phone is struggling what's going to be different in the phablet segment?
Personally I find the One to be about the perfect size. Anything biggger becomes a problem and the aesthetics suffer. My son has a Note and nothing says 't%#t' quite as well as watching someone holding a tablet to their ear to take a phonecall.

I had a GN2 and the size did not bother me at all, one handed use for dialing in the car is another issue, but I rarely do that. I am just hooked on the BOOM SOUND Speakers on the HTC One and will be looking seriously at the HTC One Max. I have a DE 64GB now and will only get a Max 64GB if they don't offer it I won't get it.

The only factor for me will be what battery they put in it.... a big one then im sold
Do we know how this phone will look like
Sent from Mars™
I would suspect it will look like the current HTC One but BIGGER, like the HTC One Mini is a bit smaller. I care about processor, battery, screen size, a stylus is not a requirement since I can carry a small stylus and not worry about crap-ware that I don't use.
Can't imagine how heavy it's going to be..
I switched from iPhone 5 do HTC One and it seems it has twice as much weight.

I had the GN2 and it wasn't too heavy, and I can handle the HTC One Max's weight as well. After all a little weight isn't a bad thing to remind you of the real power you have in the palm of your hand.
I'm really looking forward to the HTC One Max. I always liked the idea of a phablet, but hated the poor build quality of other manufacturers like Samsung and Sony, so I never bothered with anything other than HTC (being a graduate from my Desire Z > One XL > One), as the overall user exrience and build quality is, imo, the cleanest and most solid amongst the top manufacturers...
All I ask is that the One Max have expandible micro-sd and a stylus... As an artist, that would be the icing on the cake, and since I'm never home and my phone is my personal computer... Expandible storage and a good battery is important for me for such a large device (whereas I don't mind it as much on my One)
