[Q] slow 4g speeds - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have had the phone for weeks and The 4g or h+ speeds are slow less than 1mbs down And no more than 800k up. Is this how fast At&t's 4g is or not?
P.S This is my first smart phone and It's the best phone I have ever seen. thank you

My 3g seems to be working fine... I dunno abt at&t but.... talking about mbps with my connection im getting good speeds more than 3mbps in general that equivalent to abt excess of 300 kBps download speed.

Absurdly slow on 3G signals??

Does anyone else on Tmo/Orange Uk have issues with 3G speeds? Mine are much slower than on the SGS and I can't figure out why.... I'm starting to worry if my phone has a fault ....
anyone had issues?
thanks!!
Dont think it's your phones fault. I get up to 4mbps everytime i take a test, and i got only 2mbps with my desire so, yeh this phone rocks.

just 3G speeds? or with 'H' aswell? download 'speedtest' from android market(free), if your download speed hovers around 356-357kbs, then I would say your download speed is capped.I'm with t-mobile, and mine was. I had to phone and get through to their techy dept and get them to enable 'Hspda'

http://blog.ruggedandmobile.com/2010/01/26/a-guide-on-the-difference-between-gprs-edge-3g-and-hsdpa/
G - this stands for GPRS, and is the slowest data transfer method (approx 32 - 48 Kbps)
3G - This is the next level available on T-Mobile, and is around 10 times faster (384 Kbps)
H - stands for High Speed Downlink Packet Access, and is essentially 3.5G. In theory, TM's network
can transfer at 7.2Mbps, but real world tests tend to average out at around 2 Mbps, still significantly
faster than 3G
There is also HSDPA+(H+) which is even faster.
Hope this helps explain

[Q] 1x vs 3G

So this may be a little off topic but I just switched from Tmobile to Sprint a few days ago so I can get the Evo 3d when it gets released so I've been using the Nexus 4g in the mean time, anyways there's no 4g coverage in my area so I'm on 3g most of the time and the speeds are really slow maybe an average of 600kbps but today I noticed I was stock on 1x during most of the day! as I was browsing the internet I noticed the pages were loading surprisingly fast so I ran several speed tests and I was getting around 2 megs down everytime!! how is this possible? I thought 3g was faster than 1x, any thoughts?
It makes absolutely no sense. 1x should be nowhere near those speeds.
i agree! that's why I thought that was really strange I was bumped down that my 3g came back on , I'm actually trying to figure out how to disable 3g on my phone right now! I read somewhere that sprint is testing 1x advance technology but I don't know if that's the case, oh well it was good while it lasted!
Might be 1x advanced like u say

Vibrant on att

alright so i got an unlocked vibrant with the unlimited data for $10 through att. and its been working perfectly. my question is can i get the phone to run faster then 3G? and i did the 1mb speed test and my speeds were much faster then 4g avg times. idk how its possible.
The phone cannot physically run faster than 7 mbps. On a great day at best you'll get download speeds around 6 mbps. I don't know what the definition for 4g is on att but since that standard is falling faster than facebooks userbase maybe you'll reach the lower limit of what att considers "4g"

Are you sure that you have a Vibrant and not a Galaxy 4G?
yeah im positive. idk maybe it just seemed to be fast yeah idk. great phone. very fast. 3g is enough for me. thanks guys!

What speeds are you getting on your GS2?

I'm in central Florida (kissimmee/Orlando) and I'm getting an average of 3mbps down and 1.1mbps up. Just curious as to what the rest of you are getting.
Also this might be a silly question, but if I'm on "4G", should it say UMTS or HSPA+ in my about phone status?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
It says HPSA. Haven't checked my speeds, been on Wi-Fi.
what are your pings?
Ping 75 ms
Download 3681 kbps
Upload 617kbps
does it feel fast as far as when you hit the browser until a page loads?
Yes the browser performance is quite good.
More info: HSPA+ isn't available in Charlotte currently, Charlotte uses the 1900 band
I live in Indianapolis, IN and I have an H+ on my status bar and my speeds were clocked at
4139 kbps down
1105 kbps up
130ms ping
I am currently a bit further out than Indianapolis at the moment though so I am not sure if the speeds will be better once I am in the city.
Does the the H+ mean we are getting 4G? If so hspa+ speed is pretty disappointing.

H+ means HSPA+, this is not an LTE (real 4G) phone.
Mine is showing H+ up top but UMTS in phone status. My ping is averaging 150ms. So far feels faster than my captivate, but I was expecting better.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
I was more asking if the H+ icon actually means we are getting hspa+. As the speeds don't seem that much better than what I had on my captivate. Also when I dial *#0011# it says HSPA+ used:0 leading me to believe the h+ icon has no real meaning.

My S2 will be sitting idle until some ROMs pop up, but the S2 demo in my local AT&T store got around 2.5 mbps down and 1 mbps up (which is typical for my area).
When in the settings, you'll see UMTS. Devices often switch to HSDPA/HSPA when a data session starts.

No, I haven't turned mine on yet but with other devices AT&T set them up to display H+ for UMTS (3G) and HSPA (3.5G).
on my inspire in southeastern connecticut, I'm getting 6mb down and 2mb up, with a ping of 101. this is on H, not hspa+. hopefully my gs2 will be a bit faster once i get it
Anywhere from 3-8 down and a pretty consistent 1.0 up here in Akron Ohio and surrounding areas

Not sure what's up with my speeds...
44kbps Download
45kbps Upload
261ms Ping
This is in Little Falls, NJ
At my house I'm getting about 3 Mbps down 1 up. With my captivate I got around 1.8 down .9 up. Slight improvement.
However my wifi connection is way faster.

Interesting, I'm having a trend of faster pings but lower data speeds on my gs2 than my inspire. In areas I would get around 4-5 mbps the gs2 gets 3xxx, and where I normally connect in my living room at 28-2900 I am now getting 1500 or so. However ping is twice as fast

Maybe it's enough compensation (latency) for slower speeds?
I'm getting 8-9 Mbps down and about 1 Mbps up in midtown Atlanta right now in the middle of the day.
I am in between Washington D.C and Baltimore MD and I am getting the following. I will try and remember to bring my Captivate to work tomorrow to see if there is a huge difference between the two.
2816 down
937 up
99ms Ping

New GS2 -- slow data speeds

I don't know why but my new GS2 is getting slow data speeds through the Ookla speed test app. My girlfriend's Atrix 2 gets consistently 5-6mbps. Using the same server, my GS2 only pulls in 1-2mbps. My sister got a GS2 also and getting same results. Does the GS2 just have a bad antenna? I thought this was supposed to be a great phone..
I assume your talking about 4g speeds sounds like your not connected to a 4g network your pulling 3g speeds also what carrier are you on? Some phones just because you enable 4g dosent mean your connected ensure this and test
if I helped in any way hit that thanks button!
i'm on AT&T. Both phones are. The GS2 has an H+ symbol
Same here. I have never got over 3mbps. I have yet to really find out why. I think its like that for many of us.

There are some tweaks for data speed dialing ##3282# and changing proxy to 0 but double check.i did that for sprint and worked wonders my 4g is around 7-9 mbps after that.imbsure there's a similar way for att
if I helped in any way hit that thanks button!
Nope... :/
Anyone have any idea why the GS2 is getting subpar HSPA+ speeds? Is there anything I can do about it?
Just ran more speed tests.... Atrix 2 gets 6.75mbps down while GS2 gets 3mbps down... can anyone help me out? I'm thinking of returning the GS2 :|
I checked signal strength under both phones, and it's pretty much the same. Both are on 'phone' APN. I'm clueless
I'm having the same issue. This is what I have been doing use Speakeasy.net form the browser and speed test there. I was getting 1-3 mbps with speedtest app. From what I have heard that app doesnt provide correct results. From this site on the browser im getting 5-10mbps. Try it out and see if it helps
Thanks for your response. The speedtest app gave me 2.5mbps down. Speakeasy gave me 6.44mbps. Wow! What a difference. Thanks!
So it's the app then? Strange....
I feel better now about the GS2.
I get the same slow speeds from speak easy
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
Yeah the speedtests even with Speakeasy are inconsistent on the GS2. I did a bunch of tests now which ranged between 1.5mbps to 3mbps, and sometimes higher to 5mbps. Meanwhile the Atrix 2 easily stays consistently between 5mbps and 6mbps.
Maybe i'll try the AT&T store to see if they can help
I got the Network Speed app to monitor realtime bandwidth. Streaming from Google Music, I saw speeds of 700kb/s to 1mb/s. Crazy fast. Doing a speedtest on Speakeasy and Ookla only got 250kb/s to 300kb/s
Seems like the GS2 just has a problem with speed tests.
