Q. Randomly removing files on sd - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ever since I flashed to CM7 with glitch kernel, pictures disappear from DCIM folder randomly, and only some of the mp3 files won't play. I tried reflashing, new files, sd reformat, but same things occur.
Does anyone have a guess what the problem is?

Which build of CM7 are you on?..I had issues with 55 and the one after that...58I think?...had to go back to 35 to fix my issues...but since then I've switched to miui...so I can't speak for the most recent cm7 but trying a different nightly may help?

Right before my SD card died, I had stuff randomly disappearing. Hopefully its like efan450 mentioned, and just the version you are running.

[Q] MP3 issue

Weird thing I've noticed: I've been using the Erebos theme, flashing it over both Axura and Bionix. After flashing (so, with a fresh system), I've copied a few mp3 files from my system to my phone. I've played them via the music player, and then I've set them for my notifications (a song for my ringtone, a sound effect for my SMS. Both as mp3 sounds).
After a day or so, though, my system stops recognizing them as valid audio files. First, the ringtone defaults to silent because it's set to the MP3 but the system no longer recognizes the file. After I've noticed that, I've gone into the music player, which informs me that it no longer recognizes the file.
After some troubleshooting, it appears that setting the phone to silent is what has caused it. I've done that via the dropdown menu the lock screen. The system seems to re-recognize the files after a reboot, but not after simply going from silent to not-silent.
Anyone else ever heard of this? Is there any work around? The idea of rebooting my phone after I put it on silent is kind of irritating...
Never had this issue, and I've gone through this same process before. Has it only occured on new ROMs? (If they're not already) have you tried placing on your internal SD card?
If placing on your internal SD card, it may be a problem with your external SD.

Those are the only two roms I've used. Might have to try a third, I guess. I've actually not been using an external SD lately. Not even a card in the slot. Maybe I should try one in there, see if that fixes it.

Tried using a 16gb sd card today, but didn't notice a difference. Any guidance? Change roms? Different kernel?
Oddly enough, I have had the same issue, and I'm really glad you posted this thread, as my troubleshooting didn't get as far as isolating to putting my phone on silent. I will definitely try to leave it off of silent for a few days and see if that makes a difference.
I had this problem with KB5 released by Samsung, then had the same problem using Trigger, which is built off of KB5. It's possible that it is a bug in KB5, but obviously, not many people seem to be hitting it, so who knows...
Edit - just noticed that you had the same problems with Bionix and Axura, which I don't think are KB5, so there goes my theory...
I am also having the same exact problem. I am using bionix 1.3.2. I have Odin'd back to stock and re-installed but that didn't solve my problem. I believe this also causes other functions to stop working, like you tube. Therefore, many people have this same problem but have been putting it under many topics. Does anyone know a solution to this?

I would hardly say it HAS to be hardware. It could be any range of other software related things, such as settings we use or apps we have installed.
Here are the things that make it seem NOT hardware related-
-Rebooting fixes it. That doesn't eliminate hardware, but it's evidence against it.
-It seems to impact local audio files whether they are system sounds, or MP3s stored on any on-board storage, which doesn't seem like a hardware issue.
-It also impacts streamed audio, since when I'm in the bug state, it impacts amazon cloud player, pandora AND youtube.
I would say it's possibly hardware in that "anything's possible" sort of way, but I think it's more likely to be software. That is not to say it's the particular ROMs or kernels we're running - more likely the way we have some settings set or apps configured, etc.

[Q] 123 App Limit on SD card

Does anyone know how to get around the limit of installing no more than 123 apps to SD? I have a Samsung Epic. I can install more than that to SD but when I reboot my phone doesn't see the apps on the SD card and it slows down and becomes unusable. I know I can move some to the phone, but I don't want to do that. I have tried different Froyo and Gingerbread roms. Is there any way to up the limit past 123? Thanks.
I can honestly say that I do not have this issue.
I have an Epic 4G Touch, and currently have 202 apps on my SD card with no issues.
I am currently running the Stock ROM.
Are you on Gingerbread? Is your phone rooted? I use Titanium Backup to restore my apps.
Running GB, 2.3.4
Rooted
I also use TB, but everything on there now is a fresh install.
Feel free to use me to help narrow down some of the possibilities for why yours isn't working...
I'm also using GB, Rooted and I use Titanium. What do you mean everything on there is a fresh install? You didn't use Titanium to restore it?
I've tried different SD cards to no avail. I've tried having different roms, kernels and modems to no avail. As soon as i put app # 124 on my card (doesn't matter what app it is), and then I reboot my device, my phone then becomes unusable in the GUI.

When I say everything on is a fresh install, I mean that I'm re-downloading and installing everything in very small batches, rather than using what I had backed up. After I get something down, and verify that it is working, I back it up.
The reason for this is that I kept getting my phone stuck in a bootloop, and couldn't figure out what was causing it. So I decided that it was almost as easy to re-download everything as it was to restore from backup, since I was pretty much doing it all one app at a time.
AppBrain has made that easier than I expected, though it hasn't relieved any of the tedium.
This may be an absurd question, but after you have broken the 123 barrier and rebooted, have you let your phone sit undisturbed for a while so that everything has a chance to catch up?
I know that as the amount of apps on my SD increases, the time from boot until the phone is "usable" increases as well. I've gotten around this by using Tasker to reboot the phone about fifteen minutes or so before I wake in the morning. That way, no matter if it takes two minutes or ten, it has plenty of time.
Also, have you tried completely busting the 123 barrier? Perhaps jumping straight to 150 or something would make a difference.
Googling for a brief bit only finds a couple of references to there being a limit on the number of apps, but that was supposedly resolved after Froyo.
Yes, I realize it takes a while to discover all the apps on the card after booting. I give it a while and the icons still just stay as a generic SD icon. If I go into Manage Applications those apps on the card are just the generic icon.
I have about 200 apps. I've restored them all before with Titanium and it still has the same problem. I've searched the web as well and saw that someone said it may be a Froyo limitation, but I've tried different Gingerbread roms and the problem still exists.
I've also tried RFS and EXT and it makes no difference.

Yes, I bought a new SD card and still have the same problem. Old card was 16GB class 2, new card is 32GB class 4.
I've backed up and restored with MyBackup Pro as well and the same problem exists.

Some ROMs (like Cyanogenmod) let you move apps to the SD after installing on internal. You might try moving an app doing that and see if that breaks your barrier.
Also, try using that SD formatter for windows that Samsung or Panasonic make. A Google search will turn it up.
Sent from my NookColor using xda premium
I would suggest trying a class 10 sd card, but a class 6 should do fine. Also look for a firmware update for your phone as that could be the issue.
I've already tried using the card the way it came, I've formatted with Windows, I've formatted with CWM, I'm not so sure that using SD formatter will make much difference.
I have already tried moving apps to SD with the built-in app to sd functionality and it still causes problems when I get above 123 apps.
money11ez said: "I would suggest trying a class 10 sd card, but a class 6 should do fine. Also look for a firmware update for your phone as that could be the issue."
I don't have a class 10 sd card sitting around, so I can't try that. Why would the speed of the card affect how many apps can run off it?
What do you mean try a firmware update? I've tried the stock rom, and many custom froyo (ec05) and gb (ei22) roms and the problem still happens.
the faster the card the more bandwidth it has, so it can access more things at any given time.
Small question: Do you really use all of those apps?

Epic 4G Move App to SD card limit
HI
I am experiencing the same problem with my EPIC 4G on a Gingerbread ROM. I have tried multiple times with different kernels to work with more than 150 apps on the SD card.
They all move over fine, but on the first reboot the phone fails to find them and goes in to a reproducible loop where it starts up, works very slowly for 2 minutes, then gives a haptic feedback buzz as it reboots, over and over for days.
I know the limit is between 84 and 150 apps on the SD card because I have a working backup image with 84 apps moved over. My experience has been that around the 120+ mark, it just goes very bad very quickly.
If you don't mind my asking, how do you know the limit is 123?

[Q] ICS Passion v7 - "Media" process killing battery

The android.media.process is taking a large chunk of my battery. I haven't seen this process on any of the previous ICS passion roms. Can anybody tell me why this is constantly running?
Here's a couple screen shots. I would ask the dev but I'm a couple posts away from being able to do so. Hopefully he'll read this and explain why it would be different than the previous versions..
Try clearing data for all those services mentioned.
It's weird, I've seen this problem a lot in the thread, but I don't have it.
What are you syncing, by the way? Which do you have enabled?
Only thing synced is my gmail. I make sure to go through all of the settings and uncheck anything that would run in the background. I'll update after I clear out my cache.
Alright, hm.. could be a faulty app, too.
Let me know how it goes.
Cleared cache from recovery, set permissions.. etc. Its still running. It must be something different with this rom... I may just return to 6.5. I had no problems with it and I have gotten used to no GPS.

I'm having this issue with V7 too. I read online that it could be a corrupt media file causing it. Apparently, you need to move your media off you SD card to see if it helps.
Haven't tried it yet
You can figure out what media it is scanning and then in that file open it up and put a .nomedia file in it and when your media scanner is engaged, it will skip over that particular file.
Be careful with .nomedia files b/c if you put them in say DCIM or you album art, take a wild guess what you'll see in your media player or your gallery.
.nomedias work as long as your make sure you know where they go. Wouldn't make sense to put on right in the root of your SD now would it? But find the file it keeps scanning and put one in there.
In my experience just let media process run until it eventually stops 10-15 min.. then reboot. Should stop excessive CPU usage after a couple reboots and data built.
I also .nomedia titanium backup and CWM.
Otherwise you may have a corrupt file causing this. I thought so at 1st but maybe its something with this ROM. I formatted my SDcard and media process still loose at boot. So just give time for it to settle and it usually goes away.

Phone not recognising microSD card properly

Hi all,
My O1 has a problem wherein some apps recognise the files present on the SD card and some don't. I'm going to eloborate the scenario below.
Well, firstly the current ROM i'm running is the latest MIUI by Zack, which i had installed yesterday night. But prior to that i was running the stable CM7.2 with the candied kernel by DjnoXD.
While i was running the CM7, i noticed that only PowerAmp was able to detect my music present in the microSD card. Apps such as GentleAlarm, JetAudio, Fusion Music player and the default music player wasn't able to detect any music on my phone. So i assumed that the microSD card has ran it's course, since it was more than 2+ years old.
So yesterday, i bought a SanDisk Ultra 16GB class 10 card, and I installed MIUI on it, and to my disappointment, MIUI player didn't detect any music player, same result with JetAudio, Fusion and GentleAlarm. Yet somehow PowerAmp magically is able to detect the music!
Now I'm sure this problem is not because of a faulty microSD card, Kernel or the ROM.
I hope i have provided enough information, If more is needed please inform me about it.
What could be the problem? I searched a lot before making this thread.
Regards,
CD
Edit: I'm facing a lot of signal loss recently... Could this be due to a damaged hardware? I did drop the phone a couple of times

I never liked Clockwork recovery or the ROM Manager, I use amonra recovery and MIUI doesn't have ROM Manager... Also i did check for the .nomedia file using root explorer, i didn't find it in the .nomedia file in the ringtones/alarm/music folders...
I feel my phone has a hardware damage as the signal keeps getting lost way too often after i dropped the phone... It wasn't a very steep fall, probably it fell on a delicate spot which i presume is located where the sd card and antenna is located(i.e., at the top of the phone)
Can this be fixed by servicing? My phone's out of warranty anyways... or do i buy another phone?
Does your sdcard work fine otherwise? Can you view pictures/documents or move apps to sd? If so, it looks like for some reason the phone is not scanning for music files and building it's music database. Why don't you try flashing another gingerbread or an ics rom to test?
Nothing is wrong with your phone. There can be many reasons for this problem.
Copy entire microsd card to your PC. Now delete all the useless folders created by so many music
players you used.. in the copied folder. Search for .nomedia in complete copied
folder.
Format your microsd card.. (fat32). Copy everything back. Done!!!
Dont do this if you dont have knowledge about which folders to keep and delete.
I recomend you to use only one music player at a time!!
> search for .nomedia files on folder and delete those.

I had deleted all the .nomedia files present... yet i had the problem. So I formatted my sd card again, created a 512 MB ext2 partition, a 64MB swap partition and the rest as FAT32 via the recovery.
I flashed the latest CM7 nightly and the default music player is able to recognise the files...
However randomly, the music apps keep scanning for media files and show 0 results... it's as if the sd card slot is loosly attached to the phone.
The signal keeps dropping often, and i'm sure it's not the network problem as i have an older nokia phone which has full signal... i mean at times, if ppl call my o1, i'm unreachable yet if the nokia is called at the same time, people are able to connect...
I suspect it's some hardware fault... Can it be fixed?

Cant be sure about your network problem. May be baseband not properly flashed.
Second.. go to network preferences and select Only Gsm or Only Wcdma. Not auto.
If you are using a2sd or link2sd.. Dont move the default music player to sd card.

I can manage with random unmounting issue , but random/often signal losses defeats the purpose of having a phone...

[Q] JB Rom help?

Hi all...I have been flashing for about a year now and I need help finding a JB Rom that works correctly. I have tried a few different ones, and most won't show my pictures or music even after I followed the guides to fix these issues. So I flashed Miui JB latest Rom and its real nice, but no BLN?? So, which JB Rom is stable for you with working GPS, mms, and shows no issue with music or picture files...AND has working BLN? If I could just find a kernel that would work with the MIUI JB rom to enable BLN I would be golden...alas, I can't find one and Devil won't work. Thanks guys!
I've been on AOKP 9-20 with Devil 1.5.2 with almost no issues. The only problem I was having was a few force-closes while using the camera, although after a few reboots it seems to have gone away. I plan to flash the new AOKP build 3 later on, which people are having great results with. I was on CM10 for a long time before this and everything was working perfectly, but I came back to AOKP mainly because Devil didn't work that great with CM10 and I missed blinking notifications and better performance options.
tl;dr AOKP or CM10 are both great

Hey thanks for responding! You haven't had issues with losing pictures or music files?? They are on the sdcard but no music player can see them...same as pictures, although QuickPic seems able to pull them up...I flashed the latest CM10 nightly, no music no pics...went back to stock and worked up to AOKP nightly, same issue! Got mad and flashed Miui JB and poof everything showed! Weird! I followed some of the guides I found through search for how to fix the issue but nothing worked...no problems with this for you though??
EDIT: I clean flashed AOKP build 3 and NO music or pictures!!! Going to flash the Devil and see if that makes any difference.
Yeah I've have no issues with pictures or music on any rom I've tried, however I'm no longer using the sd card that came with the phone. I had an issue mounting the sd card when I originally started flashing my phone (I had zero issues with the card before that time) and decided right away to buy a better sd card before flashing anything else. I ended up getting a 32GB class 10 which has been flawless. So basically the only thing I could think might be going on might be related to the sd card failing, especially if you're still using the junky one they give you with the phone initially.

LOL I tried that too. I honestly did everything I could think of or every tweak I found...that's why I was hoping someone could point me in the direction of a JB rom that did not have this issue. It's cool though, I started using Google Music...transferred my music onto my pc and uploaded to Google music site. Then every time I update AOKP, I just will get the app and it will download the music to my cell. Not a perfect solution but it's tolerable! As far as pix, as long as I use Quick Pic they show up just fine. Of course I have to use a third party camera app since the AOKP camera won't work since gallery isn't. Thanks for any help!
I remember there being an issue with rom manager creating a .nomedia 'hidden' file:::: here is from a post of what I did to fix that issue::
Yep I was having this issue too,,, yesterday I had tried clearing the gallery cache and data,,, today I 1st tried clearing the media storage cache and data,,, hoping maybe just possibly that would help ... but it didn't... Also Tried both of my SD Rescan widgets, but neither worked ... so I uninstalled the ROM manager update which took me from 5.0.1.5 and asked me if I wanted:: " to replace this app with the factory version " which I clicked ""OK"" and that put it back to version 5.0.1.1 ,,,
then I cleared :: media storage,,, gallery,,, and Apollo :: cache and data ,,, and rebooted .... wallaha!!! gallery shows properly!!... THANKS everyone ,,,
,,,may have been slightly overkill but I what the heck,, just in case gallery and Apollo had anything hanging around ...
Now you were saying that when you flashed MUIU everything worked? I wonder if you could pull the Camera.apk from that rom and install it on AOKP to see if it'll work

Same issue here, happened a couple of cm10 nightlies ago. Never had a problem before, there were no reports of it happening to others but only a few of my pictures loaded, no music was recognized, neither were my custom ringtones, or videos. ODINed back to stock and it carried back to that... no idea how to fix it... although I think it is an sd card issue, the phone just isn't recognizing there being media on the card or only partially. Namely because if I pull the ringtone from sd and place in the ringtone folder in /system they appear. Tried just about everything, specially after hearing about the Rom Manager issue with .nomedia's being placed were it shouldn't have.
Other things I've noticed is that, an app like Root Explorer can access my sd and recognize the files inside to which I can select and use, but even after opening the picture/song/video they still don't show up in their respective apps. Also note, I have reformatted my sd card and ODINed back to stock to start over with no luck in either. I've since installed Rom Manager with no luck either.

Hmm I wonder? But how would that have any effect on the music part of it? Honestly I can live without the stock camera and gallery, its the fact that all my music is missing is the worst part...
Does MUIU have it's own music player? I never used it, so I don't know. If it does, take the apk from the rom and put it on AOKP to see if your music shows up. I wonder if this is just a glitch that hasn't been addressed simply because not that many people have encountered it. Perhaps this is a big enough issue to be posted in the general Q&A forums? Maybe that way you'll get more views and possibly better answers from people on other devices that may have got this bug.
I believe JB puts something on the sd card so ics and below won't show all of the media. I went back to JB and everything shows up fine.

Yup, that's exactly how mine is...I can see the files on root explorer or if I usb to pc but no matter what app I use to play music it says no music found on sdcard. I've used rescan app, moved onto pc and then formatted sd, blah blah. Nothing works. Oh well, it isn't enough to make me leave AOKP...I just work around it and wait for a fix I tried cm10 nightly, cm10 8/19, and a few others...same issue. Also if I use an mp3 downloader it will complete the download but when I try to play the song, it's NOT found! Crazy. I'm glad I'm not the only one!
using steves sept 27 build of aokp with devil 1.6 is my favorite and daily driver right now. only issue thats a serious problem is if you turn it on while its off and plugged in charging, it has a SOD or completely dies when i lock the screen. simple fix, turn on, as soon as you see samsung logo plug it in. this also fixes having no soft keys if you get that every now and then. no issues with with the gallery, camera, music or anything. i always odin back to GB stock and then go forward with THS build 2 of ics, then JB, then google apps and boot, restart to recovery then flash the kernel. im seriously impressed with this build

Yup, that's exactly how mine is...I can see the files on root explorer or if I usb to pc but no matter what app I use to play music it says no music found on sdcard. I've used rescan app, moved onto pc and then formatted sd, blah blah. Nothing works. can you actually access and open the files if you mount the sd card in your computer? dont quote me but im betting on the sd card being near the end of its life
You think? Its just weird since if i flash anything else recent JB it all shows up fine...it started when i went from cm10 8/19 build (from rootzwiki) to the cm10 nightlies on the cyanogen site...and persists if i go back to stock and flash up to aokp JB or JB whatever. Then as soon as i flash the newest jb miui --whomp there it is! Strangest issue ever.

It could be a coincidence but it wouldn't hurt to try swapping SD cards if you have another laying around. They're also dirt cheap on amazon now too
Did you try this? Found it doing some google searching

This trick didn't work for me. So, I did what the system should have done with the .nomedia file present. I moved all of my photos to a hidden folder (with a . before the name) and removed the DCIM folder. Then, I looked for all instances of the .nomedia file (Root Explorer helped) and deleted them. Rebooted the phone. Started Gallery. Waited for 10 minutes. Voila! Gallery showed every little image file that was on /sdcard. To remove the files that I didn't want to see, I copied the .nomedia file from a random system folder and pasted it into all the folders that I didn't want indexed. Strangely though, moving even one of the original /sdcard/DCIM/Camera files from the hidden folder into the current Camera folder took Gallery down. Stranger that this also made the Internal Storage show a blank window when I connected the phone to my laptop. Almost positive that this has to do with JellyBean creating a /storage/sdcard0 folder that's linked to the older /sdcard folder. Looking it up and will post updates if I find any.
Update: The same trick works for Paranoid Android's JellyBean ROMs (even the latest 2.13) for the Galaxy Nexus. Something to do with the DCIM folder and how it is handled by Media Storage. A Linux-geek friend of mine confirms this has to do with the /sdcard0 symlinking. Although, why we need something like that is beyond my limited knowledge of the OS.

Yes a root explorer and look for all those hidden .nomedia files and delete those ,,, and copy over an alternate .nomedia that was not associated with the sd card,,, that was one of them tricks
