[Q] Flyer 3G With US Carrier? - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

Im thinking about getting a GSM HTC Flyer from ebay. I was wondering if nyone knew with what carrier will i get 3G data speeds. some people say with Tmobile.
Also will sms and MMS work?

Looking up Flyer specs on various places, it does list that its compatible with the AWS or 1700/2100 band for 3G. The HTC website doesn't seem to be working right now (at least for me), if I click "Specs" nothing happens. If the Flyer does in fact have compatibility with the 1700/2100 band, it should work on T-Mobile. The tablet would have to be unlocked, and you may need to manually enter the T-Mobile APN settings.

I just picked up a UK 32GB 3G Flyer off eBay myself for my collection, couldn't pass up the price. Network specs off the box:
HSPA/WCDMA (900/AWS/2100MHz)
GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900MHz)
I tested it for a short time using borrowed SIM cards and worked with TMobile and AT&T out the box. Didn't get a chance to do any other tests but I will soon, I just rooted it and flashed a new ROM that enables voice and text.
Check out the HTC site under tablets you will see a TMobile 3G Flyer 16GB being offered right now in the US for a promo price of $299.99 w/new service plan ($599.99 regularly) and $35 activation fee. Plans are kinda pricey IMO. I think you're better off buying from ebay or expansys and you'll get the 32GB version not 16GB. I also read somewhere that these are only available to business customers but didn't see anything on the HTC site and I went through the order process up until I have to enter payment information. Oh yeah, no Flyer on TMobile's website.

Sounds Good, what rom did you flash to enable talk and text? thnx. oh and did you get 3G with those sims?

FlyHigh ROM v1.2 with patch for voice and text... I still need to test again to make sure both are working. I didn't do a speedtest to verify connection speeds when I first tested with TMobile and ATT but I will post some screen shots as soon as I can.

Did it work on 3G on AT&T? According to the specs, it shouldn't. It would need to be compatible with HSPA 850/1900.

That's what I would surmise from the specs. Good to see theory and reality agree in this case! Thanks for clarifying!

I just got mine yesterday. Its a shame that the US EVO View Tablet doesn't come with all these accessories. Leather HTC Case, White Scribe Pen, and more.
Anyways, its working great on Simple Mobile's $60 Plan. Talk, Text, MMS, and of course 3G!

[Q] Unlocked Tmo Amaze 4G purchase/setup questions

Hi guys,
I'm from Aus and trying to get a non-savvy US (Cali, splitting time between Sac and SF) friend set up with an unlocked phone suitable for short-term US and overseas use due to travel requirements. The Amaze 4G looks great. I've tried to find answers, but would like some knowledgable eyeballs on my proposal:
1. A US website currently has the Amaze 4G for $479.50 which is much cheaper than all other options. Is this legit? Is there only the X715M model out there, or is this a predecessor?
2. Are all unlocked 'Tmo' Amaze 4G phones able to operate on GSM 850/900/1800/1900 as well as UMTS 1700/2100, both physically and as allowed by the carrier? Any weird APN/data connectivity restrictions due to unlocked phone?
3. Can this phone connect to Tmo at 3G speeds if AWS is unavailable? I read somewhere that 3G 1900 would be required, and this phone doesn't appear to have that?
4. I want to get it on the $30/m walmart/tmo prepaid plan (5G uncapped is plenty of data) but can't see how to order just the sim via their website. should I just have my friend go into walmart? prefer not to muck around with simplemobile if possible - ironically, i want to keep this whole enterprise as simple as possible with a big carrier/theoretically good support.
5. Is this idea, for use in the US primarily but also overseas over the next 12 or so months, future-proof for a couple of years? e.g. I've read about tmo working on HSPA 1900MHz, but hopefully AT&T remains an option if Tmo ends up being unsatisfactory for any reason.
Thanks for having a read, hoping to tie this up ASAP. Much love for any responses.

1. 479 sounds legit for phone, i dont know about x715m but i do know that us tmobile version is compatible with all bands networks.
2. Yes all US tmobile amaze 4g operate on GSM 850/900/1800/1900 as well as UMTS 1700/2100, both physically and as allowed by the carrier. As far as apn you would need to set up your apn settings according to the network you are using.
3. If no AWS available then only 2g Edge will work, although I have called tmobile and asked if amaze 4g unlocked will be able to use att's hspa network and they said yes amaze and sg2 are only phones capable of that meaning they were built with future proof in mind. I also seen around that tmobile version has all 3g network bands but not sure myself.
4. Easiest would be to have friend pay and pick up the sim card at walmart but i do remind you it is 30/m- 100 min and 5gb of 4g speeds CAPPED, but 2g edge speeds after the 5gb. Simple mobile is 60/m - unltd talk unlt text and 2gb of 4g speeds capped then 2g edge speeds after just depends on your preference.
5. This is a good idea as att will stil be an option and now that att failed to buy tmobile, att has come to an agreement in a roaming contract with tmobile for 7 years.
hope this helps you a little bit more in what ever you decide, good luck!
thanks mate, helped confirmed a few things in my mind.
Negri said they're on backorder so I went ahead and ordered the phone from an Amazon seller for $500. I can only hope everything's legit - I'm not too sure what the dangers of this option are. My best idea is just to use the phone heavily in the first week after getting it and make sure everything works.
now i just need a "beginners guide to android" to help the friend work through the basics... google time.
Is this your first Android phone?

nope, i've had a HTC Hero and currently run a SGS2. I bought the Amaze for a friend who's new to Android due to Apple's stupid GSM-only unlocked phones, and their lack of 1.7ghz for tmo.
we'll get through it, tho after 15 mins of googling, there's a distinct lack of good "idiot user's (not programmer's) guide to android" articles/books. will write something up myself, i think.
my response to you above is more fishing for people's ideas about how Amazon sellers can be dodgy, esp. when pretty much every website is still doing the Amaze for $6-700.. I wondered if there were any potential pitfalls with the $500 price.

EVO 3D gsm phone (SIM card type) work in USA ?

So I have UK GSM EVO 3D, and whilst I know that all my previous phones have 'roamed' in the USA, obviously that would get VERY expensive very fast. Can you buy SIM cards in the states from AT&T etc so I can use my UK phone over there without a massive bill? (I realise I won't get 4G)

Yup!
Assuming your device supports the same GSM freq as either TMO or ATT, you'd be able to buy no contract SIMs. Generally, TMO prices are cheaper than ATT, but you can visit their web sites to see their No Contract plans.
Hope that helps!

Also, as an after thought, there are some cheaper third party retailers for no contract SIMs which operate on the same networks as TMO and ATT.
Simple mobile seems to be popular and very affordable. I think they're mostly on the TMO network.
H20 is also another option. I think H2O is mostly on ATT network.
Also, Straight Talk seems to be affordable and might provide SIMs for both ATT and TMO networks ...
Hope that helps add another altnerative to the two larger provides which might not price as competitively.

yes actually that's really great In the UK we have 3rd party operators as well, and the best by far is 'giff gaff' which is unlimited internet and calls/texts for about £10 a month. Insane
Blimey... those prices are nuts in the USA!
H2O wireless is great. Uses ATTs towers with tmobiles prices. Even cheaper in my opinion.
Via My HTC Evo 3D On The Now Network From Sprint.
Data seemed VERY expensive to use over there, or am I missing something? Allowance as standard is only about 80MB which is totally useless. Our smallest (generally speaking) over here is 500MB a month.
Struggling to understand the H20 packages.

[Q] 3G and 4G versions of the 920?

According to the sales assistant in my local Phones4U shop, there are 2 different versions of the 920, one that won't and can never work on 4G and one that will.
Does anyone know if this is true? I assumed it was the device that was 4G capable, full stop. If you have a 4G network/SIM then you put it in and it works, possibly requiring some change in config settings, but surely there isn't a 3G only version of the device.
They wouldn't sell me one SIM free as they only had enough stock for new contracts apparently and it was only available in white so far. Plus, this is where she then claimed that I had to buy the EE contract version in order to get a 4G capable device, and my theory of buying a SIM free device to use with my SIM on the 3 network for now, with a view to gaining 4G once 3 brought theirs online in my area.
Appreciate any comments from someone who knows what is true. I really don't (want to) believe what the sales assistant has told me. It seems daft.
cheers,
Wes
All of them are capable of LTE, but there are variations in the bands, so it is possible that you could get one that wouldn't work 3's LTE once it is deployed, but that is very unlikely if you purchase a UK version of the device as I'm fairly certain OFCOM didn't sell too many bands for LTE.
I got told the same thing at P4U
I was told that my Black 920 EE branded wouldn't work on 4G but if you look on the box all the LTE bands are listed... turned the phone on and found a option that allows 4g connection... i will find out in a few days once my EE 4G sim turns up.
called up the local EE shop who did me a black 920 for £399 and gave me a free set of WESC headphones and a free wireless charging plate, there and then. Oh, and i also had to pay £10 top up for a PAYG SIM that came with it as this was a deal for buying the phone as PAYG. It accepts EE, Orange, T-Mobile and Virgin SIMs in the UK so i can just put my existing Orange SIM in. Absolute bargain i thought

Will it work on T-Mobile's HSPA+

I want the 64gb version, will AT&T's HTC One work on T-Mobile's HSPA+ Network??? I get sick speeds on T-Mobile's HSPA+ Network, over 20mb down and 5mb up. After 6 oclock it gets faster. These are not just spiked speeds these are every day speeds all day. I hoping to hell that HTC somehow put T-Mobile's HSPA+ Network in AT&T's as well. Has anyone tried this yet.
Thanks, Vinny
I was told it won't but don't quote me on it I'm not 100 percent sure.
I too would like the answer to this.

Hmm... Good question. I bought both versions (temporarily) to test the two networks (att has tmo beat here in Austin). I'm gonna test switching the sims before i return the tmo one in a couple of days. I'll post the results then, if nobody beats me to it.

Please post your results, only issue the phone might have to be unlocked to work on the others Network, I think. Would love to get my hands on the 64gb version, pissed off T-Mobile just doesn't have it. May have to bite the bullet and buy the 32gb version but still hoping that AT&T's 64gb version is a go on T-Mobile's HSPA+ Network, I know the LTE will work OK it is just the HSPA+ Network that is in question.
Thanks
I just talked to the HTC tech support dept. today and they mentioned that although on their site, all the speeds are listed for the 64Gb developer edition, the phone will only work on 2G on T-Mobile's network! Yes, that was 2G, not 3G, not UMTS and of course not LTE. I just signed up with AT&T and I get nothing but dropped calls, disconnects, garbled voices, data drops or no data. That happens every day, quite a few times, at different hours of the day. I had wonderful luck with T-Mobile here in Orange County, CA before. I'm selling my HOX+ for an HTC One, but I'll stay with AT&T because of the penalty and the 2-year contract. It's not Europe here... Oh, well.

I can confirm. Att version will not work on Tmo HSPA+. It works on some bands (in some places), but not good enough to think about trying move one phone to the other carrier either way. The Tmo version works a little better on the Att network, but again doesn't support all the correct frequencies. I'm returning the Tmobile version and sticking with the Att one for the better network here in Austin.

So, after selling the HOX+, I got 6 HTC One's thinking it might have been the phone. All 6 of them had the same network issues. So, it's AT&T in my area that has all those problems. I have confirmed with 2 of my friends and my wife and we all have similar problems. Does AT&T work in more than 5 US cities? Wow - nothing but problems. In any event, the HTC One's had crack problems and the On/Off button was very recessed and half of it was inoperable so I returned all of them!!!
I only have problems with att during and immediately after wicked storms.

[Q] T-Mobile, buying unlocked from HTC US

Weird,
I want to by HTC One to use with T-Mobile in USA, if I select unlocked version from HTC site:
HTC One® Unlocked (32Gb) says: The unlocked version does not support the 1700 band so HSPA+ and LTE will not work on the T-Mobile network.
http://shopamerica.htc.com/cell-phones/productdetail.htm?prId=41589
HTC One® Developer Edition (64GB) doen't say this.
http://shopamerica.htc.com/cell-phones/productdetail.htm?prId=41599
Is it safe to buy 64G for T-Mobile?
The problem is I can't buy from T-Mobile onlive steore, cos they sell only with a plan (even full-price version).
Thanks.
Make sure you live in area with 1900mhz bands reframed or tmobile lte otherwise you will be stuck with edge speeds

They have the same exact frequencies. HTC goofed up. Its in the forums bro. Anyhow, thing is T-mobile will work on AWS LTE band 4 1700. but not 4G which is hspa. If your in the area with 1900 coverage or LTE then your in luck. If not.. go on to a t-mobile store and get yourself a phone

LA has spotty 1900Mhz coverage on TMo. It's far, far better here with 1700Mhz. That's the exact reason why I bought the TMo version instead. If I need to unlock it, I'll either pay $20 on eBay for a code, or just pay for my device and get one from TMo instead. There isn't any branding on the phone at all, and you'd miss WiFi calling with the HTC store version.

Bro, if you got always "4G" on your last phone its not going to work on dev edition simply put. no 3g for you sir! if you got "LTE" or "H" on it then dev phone will work for you. if you always got just 4G.. welcome to Edge world on your dev phone.

Im in the same boat. I get E on HTC unlocked One, when I had 4G on my Tmobile One S unlocked. So, if I return the phone and get a T-Mobile version I should get 4G like I did with my old One S??

T-Mobile's branded phones always say "4G" when on HSPA+. International phones usually idle with "3G" and then change to "H" or "H+" while data is active. Neither of these things is an indication of what frequency your data is being transferred over.
That airportal site linked above seems pretty good; there are other crowdsourced options for finding the PCS refarmed areas, too. A good way to be safe if you're dead set on the developer edition is to wait for LTE to roll out in your area since that will definitely work.

That is crazy. I dont think that 1700 warning was there two weeks ago when I pre-ordered. Either way, where do I get a T-Mobile unlocked from now? Do I have to buy a regular T-Mobile outright then enter a unlock code? Thanks again.

You don't need an unlock code if you plan to use it on T-Mobile US (including prepaid MVNOs), only if you plan to use it on AT&T or internationally.
Dude call tmobile and you will be able to order via the phone
