[Q] Galaxy S2 I9100 would not start - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
My brand new Galaxy S2 I9100 arrive 2 hrs ago and I turned it on, and then plugged it in to charge. I just tried to turn it on and now it could not come on. A black screen with slow flashing battery icon with a circle in the battery is showing. What's going on?

You tried holding the power button down for a few seconds? Or try turning it on without the charger connected.

I don't remember what I did, but it but a combination of things finally got it started. But my device is crashing and locking up at random. I don't think this is normal?
My baseband version is I9100XXKE7
Kernel version is 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKF3-CL27655, [email protected] #2
Build number is GINGERBREAD.XWKF3
Is this right? It's fresh from the box.

Hmk, 1st you know phone dont come all charged ?
2nd, you will let your phone charge for the night.
3rd you will disconnect your phone and start it.
your problem should be answered.
Reason possible : The phone dont have enough charge and shutdown by it self. that might be interpreted as a crash.
P.S. You should update your phone to XXKI3
P.P.S. please do not update your phone before your phone is fully charged.

Well, this is starting to becoming rather disconcerting. I got home and the screen was on, completely crashed and unresponsive. What gives?? Do I have a lemon?
PS: I know it doesn't come charged, but it was at least 50% charged. That still doesn't explain the random crashing!

Take it back to the store for an exchange. Sounds like it's broken.

Unfortunately I bought an International version and apparently Samsung does not provide warranty to devices in the US that is the International version. I bought it from Dailysteals.com when they had a good deal. Not sure if I can do an exchange... .

Sounds like a lemon but could you at least get it into download mode? (turn off phone, then press home button+volume down+power, hold all at the same time and keep holding it). If you can you can flash one of intratech's firmware and get it up and running at least. Does the battery charge correctly?

Yes, it does charge correctly. Before I flash a custom party firmware (is Intratech custom), I would like to reflash again to the stock firmware. Can you point me to the thread on how to do this? Thanks!

Thanks, downloaded GT-I9100_XEU_I9100XWKF3_I9100XXKE7_I9100XEUKD1.exe
Hope that's the right one. I'm in the USA.

After putting my phone into upload mode, I plugged it into my Win7 x64. Got this usb sound that indicates it's not connected. I thought I installed the right drivers already. Odin is not recognizing my device. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Did you install KIES for the drivers ? If not download it from here :
http://org.downloadcenter.samsung.c.../20110512115717796/Kies_2.0.3.11082_152_4.exe
If you did try uninstalling and re installing again. It was recently updated so i would recommend downloading the latest version for the latest drivers.

Or if installing kies wont help. You can go into your system options and force windows to install the drivers (some usb drivers I think) that were previously not installed, if there was a problem while installing them. That helped me out one time. If you don't know how give me a shout.

After reinstalling the drivers another thing to consider is to close Kies when running Odin as they conflict.

Thanks guys. I'll give it a try this evening when I get back. I've been looking forward to this phone for weeks now it's just so disappointing that I'm having so much problems with it. It's so odd. It just randomly locking up. I've had to hold the power button to force it to reboot multiple times!

Hi guys,
I've contacted Dailysteals and see if the can RMA the device. I hate to send stuff back because of the hassle. This is what I have on my phone
My baseband version is I9100XXKE7
Kernel version is 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKF3-CL27655, [email protected] #2
Build number is GINGERBREAD.XWKF3
Which Intratech firmware is the right one to download? I want to flash the exact same one in case I will have to return it. Or do you suggest me to just return it and not attempt to flash it? Thanks!

SGS2 stuck in orange triangle

Help!! My SGS2 is stuck on a screen with an orange triangle and excmamation mark between a cellphone and computer after a ROM flash attempt!
I can go to Downloading mode and Odin can detect my smartphone but i don't know what else to do...
Flash a full (different to whatever you were trying) ROM, problem solved.

yep, that's just a soft brick.
since you can access DL mode, just reflash with odin and normally problem solved
Haaa, thx all i fixed it! ^^
It took me 5 hours to find out what i had to do and find the stock Firmware tho...
But all fine now
Hello,
I've got the same problem but it seems I can't go into download mode. What am I doing wrong? What else can I try?
My SGS2 is not rooted and was on Android 2.3.3. Kies told me there was an update available to android 2.3.4 so I went for it.
But I'm really disappointed, now my phone is completety stuck on this screen with the phone...orange triangle with exclamation mark (warning)...PC.
EDIT : Samsung Kies proposes to do an emergency recovery, but in the end it also fails.
Fortunately, I took a screenshot before upgrading. See attachment.
Please help me.
kind regards,
Andrew

If your phone is not rooted, you still have your warranty, bring it back to the shop and ask for a new one
I bought it an amazon. But I'd prefer to have a solution right now instead of having to complain.
I continued my quest on the net... Apparently, a usb jig might take me out of this screen and back to the download mode. Can somebody confirm this?

One minus Did you follow the Kies recovery instructions .
One turn off and remove battery for a short period .
Two turn on
Three try recovery mode
Four try download mode ..
Five yes USB jig may enable you to get to download mode and from that you can flash a stock Samsung rom .
Six service centre
jje
Thanks JJEgan. I'll try once more and let you know. Assuming that I am able to get in download mode, why should I use a stock kernel and not the normal firmware I had before? Sorry about my question, but this is all new for me.
A USB Jig should be standard equipment for anybody who flashes their Galaxy phone, IMO.

Download Odin, download stock ROM, use Windows Task Manager to kill any Kies-related processes. Then turn off the phone, turn it back on in download mode and flash using Odin. Do not tick repartition and do not use the PIT file if the stock ROM comes with one.
Hi,
Thanks to this forum I managed to bring my SGS2 alive again step by step after that Kies broke it during the android upgrade from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4... Moreover, I am in the official 2.3.4 version now without using Kies!! ;-) Here's my story:
In the end, I was able leave the screen with the "phone..orange warning triangle..computer". and I was able to go in download mode without a usb jig. You have to press the 3 keys (volume down, home, and power on) quite a few seconds without releasing them. And then the download warning menu appears, press volume up to confirm that you want go go in download mode. And I was in "download mode'. Anyway, I will buy a jig ;-)
I tried once more the emergency recovery with samsung Kies without success. Failed.
Then with Odin I had problem. It was stuck at step "setup connection". Kies was not running and was not visible in the system tray. Though in the task manager, I still had 2 Kies* processes. Kiestrayagent.exe and another one starting with Kies and 4 letters (sorry I didn't write it down). I killed both processes. One step further... Then Odin was stuck on step complete(write) operation failed. Never found why. I tried several times, battery in and out again, without success. This was on a Win7 32bit. Latest Kies version.
In the end I installed Odin on another PC Win7 64bits. I had to install Kies also on it otherwise Win7 says "no driver found" when you plug in the usb cable of the SGS2. And on this computer, flashing with Odin worked perfectly.
Thanks again to all people who helped me + also thanks to this super forum where I could find the official firmware I needed after that Kies broke down my phone.

[Q] SGS2 I9100 broken?

Hi. I have a SGS2 for 6 months, and yesterday I tried to update from 2.3.5 to 4.0.3 ICS. I used Odin -> vol- -> home button -> power to get into download mode and did all those stuff. [It was the official Poland md5 file, no root]
It didn't work, getting everytime boot.ini error. After that, I tried exactly what's on the bootloop topic and then here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1457458 to get back on my 2.3.5. Everytime I got the samsung logo and yellow triangle [only when I used the stock kernel], others md5 file over 250mb never flashed/ passed odin.
+ the symptoms below
Enters Download mode but does NOT enter recovery mode (usually means a NAND rw corruption)
Doesn't flash
Bad flash in odin (FAIL after flashing, or the flashing suddenly stops)
I checked every USB port, uninstalled kies but not the usb drivers, used 2 different cables and only rear usb panels. Tried different firmwares for i9100, like 12 or something.
Now my battery died, [low battery!! can't download..]. I don't have any other i9100, so no other battery.
What can I do now beside praying that it's not broken?
One USB recovery jig to force download mode
Two Paid for JTag repair
Three Paid for service centre repair.
Four Donate a brick to the new XDA building .
jje
I'm able to enter in the download mode. Assuming I get a charged battery, what should I do next?
Last time I used stock 'Kernel_I9100XWLA4' and that yellow triangle appeard + 'GT-I9100_DBT_I9100XWLA4_I9100XXKI4_I9100DBTKH1', but this one failed.
Do I really need to take every update and see if it works on my phone?

I just downloaded the official gingerbread [2.3.4 september - i9100] firmware from samfirmware.com.
still doesn't work. stuck at boot.bin
l.e.
all these problems after I watched and did everything I saw on a youtube video [How to Unroot/Unbrick your Galaxy S2 i9100! [ICS]]
Now I got a battery charged up, I can use download mode, flash any stock kernel [but stuck at loading with yellow triangle], and never flashed an official update [2.3.4, 2.3.5, 2.3.6 or 4.0.3] stuck at boot.bin
I also found on another forum someone with the same problem on a i9100G. He used a pit file and repartition, but after all researching everyone says it is some risky way.
You said you tried 2 different cables... I would buy a brand new cable (can be generic microUSB) and try again. I've seen more than one person have to try three before they found one that worked.
The second usb cable was from a friend with an identical i9100. still tried with some no-name cable and no result.. also I installed usb drivers from samfirmware and tried different rear usb ports.
Now I flashed Kernel_I9100XWKI4. It shows Samsung logo and yellow triangle. If I try to flash any other firmware, it just fails.
You using a Windows 7 machine? Try running Odin as administrator. And I would STILL try a different, DIFFERENT cable.
yes, w7. tried to run it as administrator, still no result.
I don't think usb cable is the problem.
OK, but I'm just saying, there was a thread where someone had to try three cables before they found one that worked. I'd also try a different computer. Unless that computer/cable combination works with your friend's I9100?
hi,
i am new to this forum.
Only after buying the G-version of S2 in India and using it for a few weeks, I came to know that it was an inferior version to the non-G version (in the sense that it is not only under-clocked but has far lesser custom ROMs to choose for the updates).
I might sound silly, but AFAIK, there is no official Samsung ICS for this product. I don't want to get my phone bricked and I can't find a proper ICS Custom ROM either. From what I've been reading elsewhere, the Samsung Official ICS for S2-I9100G won't be released before May (After Galaxy Note in April)
Can somebody suggest me a STABLE ICS ROM for this device? And yes, you'd have already gathered by now, I am a newbie when it comes to the complicated issues of rooting/flashing/and what not.
Thanks in advance.
I read about villainrom 1.1, tried to flash it now but after 3 minutes of loading it failed. Now I'm back on stock Kernel_I9100XXKI3.
I don't know if that second usb cable was used for any updates through odin.

For an I9100G? There isn't one yet.
And it's rude to try to hijack someone else's thread, dude.
I solved it!!!!
Congratulations
Would you care to share the solution to the rest of us?
I chose randomly 'Kernel_I9100JPKF3' from a list [probably I should've checked that this was the very official version of my phone] and flashed it with some i9100 odin version from an arabic website/blog. After the reboot, I saw there was no triangle and it booted normally.
Thanks ctomgee and jje for your time!
Happy for you that you have solved your problem
Best idea, if youy have problems go back to stock, SHIPPED rom.... Never failed me yet...
yep. now I see that the wireless connection is not as stable as it was before. It has lots of moments when it's disconnected from wifi by itself.
I'm not using any battery life saver and the router is fine.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
If you have the heart to venture that route again, to fix wifi issue you may want to use the ultimate kernel cleaning script and retry with the shipped or ICS kernels.
Also if you haven't yet, must read the guide to fixing unflashable soft-bricked phones.

Please help! Bricked GT - I9108

So I was helping my friend with her China Galaxy S2 GT - I9108 and I foolishly tried to flash "GT-I9100_ClockworkMod-Recovery_5.0.2.3.tar" onto her phone through odin...
Now it's stuck at the yellow triangle everytime when I boot up. I've bricked her 500$ phone...
Please tell me anyone, how do I make it work again?
There are chinese methods apparently but I am not chinese.... I just wish someone could provide reasonably well written instructions and DL links so I can fix her phone! Please!
Since it is apparently a Chinese only model phone, I think you'd be hard pressed to find any English websites that can help you... Maybe some Chinese sites, with Google Translate? Not perfect, but it's something.
Try to find stock firmware and flash it via odin. Google translate can help you for chinese sites.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
Also, if this isn't obvious now... Don't flash any more i9100 kernels or firmwares. Only flash i9108 kernels or firmwares.

Possibly, but don't use any of the firmwares linked within, as they are all for i9100 model phones.
Go to samfirmware.com to find stock i9108 firmwares. Download one from there, (you'll have to register but it's free) and flash using that guide. Again, don't use any files linked from the guide as they are not meant for your phone. But the steps should be the same.
EDIT: actually, don't use that guide. Just download an i9108 firmware from samfirmware.com, flash it in Odin in the PDA field, then do a factory reset. Then you should be good.

Don't worry about product code. You know you have an I9108.
The site is a tad confusing. You have to click the Firmwares tab, then click Type: Smartphone, then OS: Android, then Models: GT-I9108, then Region: Asia. That will get you a list of stock firmwares for the i9108.
Edit to add: Also, ignore the box at the bottom that says "LATEST FIRMWARES". If you notice, the models are all for a different model of phone; not the GT-I9108. The PDA for the I9108 should always start with "I9108".

I'm there! However theres none under the list O_O is it just my browser not loading the list? It wont show haha
Edit: NVM I forgot to click "asia"
edit 2: You reached your hourly traffic limit.

Oh my goodness hotfile... ugh.
FYI, this may or may not be of interest to you.
I found this page using google that suggests that the i9108 uses the same SoC/chipset that the i9100G uses. Which is why you had issues when you used an i9100 kernel to try to root.
EDIT: well, you never explicitly said you were rooting, but you were flashing a kernel that had CWM Recovery in it, so I assumed you were rooting.

Well, during one of the boot cycles while the plug is in, try holding vol down and home. Maybe you'll get lucky. OR take out batt, hold vol down and home, (keep holding) then put battery back, and THEN press power till screen lights.
If that doesn't work, you may need to try obtaining a USB jig. You can order them on eBay or construct your own. There are instructions all over google on how to do it, but they cost like $2-3, so I just bought one.
So since it still powers on and home button works the USB jig should work right?
And flashing to stock firmware using PDA option on Odin should in theory work right?
Can you reccomend a link for a good jig? Don't wanna buy a bad one.

[Q] HELP - I have a messed Up Galaxy Note SGH-i717

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I recently bought used i717 on Ebay. It is supposed to be unlocked but have not been able to confirm as the standard code does not work. Have not been able to root as superoneclick does not work. Finally got it to connect to Kies but Kies states latest ROM is installed.
When I go to Settings >>> About Phone - Model Number is Samsung SGH-i717, Android Version 2.3.6, Baseband Version T989UVKL1, Kernel version 2.6.35.11, Build number Gingerbread.UCLA1
When I boot up the ATT logo stuff is displayed and there was a bunch of ATT bloatware apps installed, most of which I deleted as I do not use ATT
Don't remember where I was but on one web site about upgrading stated that baseband version should be I717UCLA1, I717UCLF6, or I717UCMB4 before updatingand that It will be I717UCMD3 after the update.
I have discovered that the Baseband Version T989UVKL1 is for an SGH-T989, T-Mobile Samsung Galasy S II, which is probably the reason it won't update through Kies.
I want to upgrade to Jelly Bean 4.1.2.
Have considered Cyangenomod but afraid that with the non-ATT baseband I might brick it.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. I am new to this and it has been very confusing so far.

Look behind the battery and write down the serial number.
Put phone into download mode. Hold volume down and press power. Once you see download screen let go of volume down button.
Plug into pc
Open kies and click "tools - firmware upgrade and initialization".
Type in model number using ALL CAPS, then serial number.
Let it do it's thing.
You will be on the latest stock firmware.

Have not had any luck with Kies. Phone connects to Kies but will not process the upgrade. Says phone is already at hightest level (not exact wording but I think you can get the picture). Why would Kies work in download mode?

Because in download mode it just see's it as it's device name and serial number. Not what's installed on it.

The recovery worked. My phone is now at 4.1.2 and seemed to be working, at least for a while. Does doing this recovery lock evrything back up? Reason I ask is now when I boot up the phone it will only go to the Emergency Call screen. Have contacted my cell phone service to see if they are having any problems.
I am using a service called PureTalkUSA which uses the ATT network. Not sure if the phone has to be unlocked or not.

Once a phone is unlocked, it will never be locked. I would think if it uses an att service it wouldn't need unlocked. Find out what the apn settings are for puretalk and verify that's what you have on the phone. You might have to input them yourself.
NOW I AM REALLY EMBARASSED. IT SEEMS I ENTERED A LOCK CODE AND DID NOT REMEMBER THAT i HAD DONE SO. EVERYTHING SEEMS BACK TO NORMAL AND I GOT THE APN INFO ENTERED.
THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP. THE INFO ON HOW TO DO THE EMERGENCY RECOVERY WAS VERY HELPFUL.
Brilliant

Look behind the battery and write down the serial number.
Put phone into download mode. Hold volume down and press power. Once you see download screen let go of volume down button.

It depends on your computer performance, and internet connection speed. It has to download the latest firmware from the net. Then it has to install it. First time it could take up to an hour. The second time could take 20 minutes because the firmware will be downloaded from the first time.

About the same last time I did this. My twc service is about 2.7mb D/L.

My S9+ will not update anymore and I can't get Odin to flash stock firmware

I have Tmobile G965U on android 9 One UI beta build PPR1.180610.011.G965USQU3CSAB and when I try to update on the phone it says the software isnt supported. When I try to flash literally any stock rom in Odin it either fails or gets stuck at SetupConnection/Initialzation. Can anyone help me get my phone up to date?

Sounds like a firmware mismatch possibly. What does it say in Settings/About phone/Software information/Service provider SW version? Last line under your IMEI number. Mine is TMB/TMB/VZW. I think possibly the first to have to match for OTA updates to work. The last one indicates what the original firmware out of the box was.

Hmm that looks good. The OTA failure might be due to you having the beta firmware. There might be a series of beta updates you can install from here in the forums to get you where you need to be. I'm not a hundred percent sure though.
Otherwise you ought to be able to update via Odin if you download the latest T-Mobile release. Are you experienced with Odin, is it recognizing your phone when it's in download mode?

Odin wont flash any rom whatsoever. I've already tried 3 different versions but I gave up since they usually take 4 hours to download. Odin gets stuck and/or fails at Setupconnection or initialization steps every time. I'm only asking for help because Odin will not work. I figured I need an update for the beta. They only work for each build though so I need the build that updates baseband ZRL5

So the phone is being recognized in Odin(the little box that says com:x or whatever)? Sometimes it helps to try a different cable if you have one. it sounds more like a connection thing than an issue with the firmware?

what kind of USB ports does your computer have? I seem to remember people having issues with USB 3, and having to use USB 2 maybe?

Wouldnt even have gotten this far if I didnt have ADB debugging enabled. As I said before several times. Odin wont flash anything. I've already tried to go back to 8. If you can tell me how to get back to 8 without Odin that would be nice. But i need links to files not unhelpful text that tells me that I need to find something. Thats the whole issue. It's almost impossible to find the correct files unless someone who already knows gives you a link to them. I thought that's one thing XDA used to be good for but I guess that isnt the case anymore.
I would of helped but you kinda sound like a ****. Have fun with your perma-beta phone!

Download the update from this website then follow the instructions at the bottom of the page. This is the only thing I can think of if Odin isn't working

If your stuck on setup connection on Odin some things to try assuming using windows
Use Odin 3.13.1 ( or modified Odin 3.13.1B )
If you have smart switch/Kies install, un-install it.
USB cable i'm assuming is a data cable.
USB port try plugging into USB 2 port.
Plug phone directly into PC not any hubs.
Use latest Samsung USB drivers.
Run Odin in administrator mode.
Boot into download mode then reboot back into download mode again.
Maybe turn off any anti-virus programs.
Try a different PC.
These are a few things to try as failing at setup connection can be a common with some people and can vary with the PC.
Also note having OEM unlocked or USB debugging has no bearing when flashing stock firmware with Odin.

OMG. Ok I'll try all those things and get back to you.
Remember the days when this use to be easy? I miss the old days of just flashing roms willy nilly on my Galaxy Nexus. Oh how you will be missed Cyanogenmod :crying:

I dont see the issue with helping people that are named Richard, nor do i see any reason to post this as it definitely qualifies as spam and did nothing but detract from this thread.
