[Q] Display garbled, flickering and shaky - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After watching a movie for about an hour, apart from top-left part on the backside becoming quite warm, the display is garbled, flickering and shaky (like olden days overhead projectors used to do after they were used for a few hours).
Applications seem to be working fine. But, reading the screen is nearly impossible because of high flicker.
Has any one experienced this problem? Is there a solution?
I hope it is a temporary problem and will go away with power cycle, hard reset, etc.,
So far, I have faced five problems with Galaxy Tab 10.1 (16GB, WiFi)
Display garbled, flickering and shaky
DHCP causes loss of Internet connectivity after WiFi router reset because it didn't get same IP address. Had to configure static IP address
newton rings, oil slick on the screen
glass protruding on the bottom left
dirty gum on one of the sides

Has anyone faced this problem? Any suggestions for a fix or work-around?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1280975 seems to be related to some extent -- heat.
The problem appears to be permanent Just after 15 minutes of normal browsing, it happened again.
It is a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 16GB WiFi upgraded to Samsung's official TouchWiz firmware.
Some settings:
1. No animations
2. Rosemary font
3. Screen in Standard mode
4. Default applications
Any suggestion for a fix or work-around is highly appreciated.

Issue list

Not sure if this is the place to post, but here goes.
Anyone experience the same problems?
My tab: Stock P7510UEKME
Issue list:
1. Wireless sometimes unable to reconnect after hibernation: Only solution - Reboot
2. Randomly unable to unlock after hibernation: Solution - Reboot
3. GUI lags a bit compared to my wife's Ipad
4. Battery drains much faster compared to my wife's Ipad.
5. Random reboots
6. Installing from Market sometimes requires several attempts. It just says "ready to install" but does nothing.
These are not huge problems. But, they are very annoying when they happen.

1. This could be your router- when you hibernate the tab sleeps its wifi. So on your tab change wifi sleep to never. Reason for this is to hold your IP address in the router. When wireless devices ask for internet from the routers, they assign a ' floating ' IP address. So in this case you turn on the tab and the router gives the tab an IP address of 192.168.1.3. ( the router assigns its IP's in sequencial order. So the next one would be 192.168.1.4 and so on. ) but then say you hibernate the tab, the router sees its lost the connection with the tab and deletes that floating IP address it had previously assisnged to the tab. Then say another device wants wifi, the router is going to give it the lowest available IP address, and it might be the one that the tablet was assigned to. So say it does, now your tablet cannot connect because it is looking for the old IP address that it was on. The tablets wont ask for a new ip address, and tries to reconnect with that same IP address, without success.
You can fix this by doing and making a static IP address on the router just for the tablet. But that's more involved and I would check to see if the wifi keep policy is on never.
2. Hmmm how long is this tablet on hibernation? Sounds like you have too much going to or loaded in the bkgd and getting GUI lag...
3. Each pad has its owe inherent lags. Rooting , custom roms and over locking kernel will fix this.
4. Could be a placebo that it seems like it is. I would root and use the calibrate battery app in the market. Also don't leave your screen on full brightness, put it low until you need it. Also you may just be doing that much more than your wife, causing more drain.
5. Custom rom will fix this. Samsung has the whole system all jacked up...
6. I have had this myself, but never fret. Just reboot or delete google account and log back in and that should fix it.
Sent from my Galaxy Tab!
I think these are all known issues.
1. happend twice to me in the ~50 day I have the Tab
2. heard of an "unresponsive to touch" issue after sleep, never happend to me
3. stock launcher is slow compared to eg. ADW EX
4. mainly depends on your settings and the apps you run in the background, especially those who keep the Tab from "sleeping". Mine loses ~2% per 24h with wifi shutting down when the screen is off
5. heard of that issue, never happend to me
6. this is annoying and we are all waiting for an update for the Market app from google

Thanks for replying.
1. No, the wireless issue is not the router. It happens outside of the my home as well. Currently on a business trip, and it happened this morning too.
2. Several hours or overnight, usually.
3. OK
4. I got some more sync activity (emails and such) going on, but other than that, it is pretty much the same. I know Android have had battery issues in the past, maybe they're not quite fixed yet.
5. Custom rom might fix this issue, but I don't want to introduce new problems by using a custom rom. The lesser of two evils, right .
6. OK, but no biggy really.
Again, thanks for your reply. Appreciated.

I had those 3 problems before (all 3 solved with pershoots kernel). Solutions that worked for me before:
1. Enable/disable airplane mode.
2. Once you press the power button (to turn on the screen) wait 5-10s. Then touch the screen to unlock it. I have no idea why, but it worked for me.
3. Check what is using the battery. For me it was 2 apps that used 60% of the battery. Once uninstalled it was all OK.

I am about to try the ADW EX. Hopefully it works better.
Guess there are some problems here and there. Hopefully they are working on it.
Thanks for replying.

I have a couple of comments. I have had an iPad2 since it was released, and I got the Galaxy Tab 10.1 (P7510UEKME) a couple of weeks ago. It is rooted to accommodate the "Hulu" Flash library but otherwise unmodified.
It seems to me that there are some interesting tradeoffs here. For what its worth, I have not experienced any of [1], [2], or [5], not even once.
[3] I find both interfaces very responsive and have no issues with either one.
[4] Consumer Reports reported (tested? not sure) battery life and got 11 hours from the iPad and 9 hours from the Tab, browsing the web (wifi). Another review, "Tablet Shootout" from the San Francisco IB Times, was based on a test with both machines playing video with wifi on, and 65% brightness. The Samsung clocked in at 6 hours compared to almost 10 hours for the iPad. This is in line with my experience on both machines. The Samsung does have more pixels to decode - 1280x800 vs iPad 1024x768 - and it takes more power to compute those 33% extra pixels. Or it might just be a code maturity / efficiency thing. But after watching an action movie on the Tab in widescreen 16:9 HD and comparing it to 4:3 letterboxed on the iPad, I was sold on the Tab, even with its shorter battery life. Then again, I don't spend much time on airplanes.
[6] This is a known problem but it still is a major annoyance. I cannot install a new program on the first try, ever. Sometimes I have to try 5 or 6 times. This does not occur with on my Droid 2 running Android 2.2 or Android 2.3. I wonder if other Honeycomb users are having this problem or if it is a Samsung thing - does anyone know?

There is so much I like about the tablet compared to the Ipad. I wouldn't switch at all. I realize that there is no such thing as perfect software, and the Android ecosystem will obviously mature over time. Just hoping for some more native tablet apps (sooner rather than later) and if they could increase the battery life just a little, that would be perfect. I have not had the "install from Market" issue on my Galaxy S2 phone, so I think it is a Honeycomb issue, but not sure.
Thanks for replying.

1. Tried that, didn't help.
2. Will try it. Thanks.
3. I did, and it said Google maps (wth?) and Screen. The screen is set to its default settings and I haven't used Google maps at all on the tablet. Weird. I have "use location" enabled, but I didn't think it actually had to use Google maps to work.

screen blacks out and wifi drop outs

Not sure what wrong with my Prime,
1.
It has been dropping strong wifi sites on a regular basis for a long time. It will connect ok but if I let it go to sleep or change apps it will usually drop the connection. Have set power settings not to drop wifi, but that makes no change. No idea what is the problem.
2.
When using the built in library app and changing pages in epub book the screen will sometimes go black and wont come back on for a minute or 2. Sometimes it happens when rotating the screen. No idea?
It is rooted but using the OTA standard ROM.

WiFi issue - WiFi doesn't work after sleep / screen goes blank

I have Remix OS installed in dual boot with Windows.
Aside from the encryption not working (see my other posts), I have one other issue.
All the hardware works very well, including the WiFi. I can use it for reasonable periods / stream Netflix films etc.... but once the screen goes blank / it goes into standby the WiFi can't see any networks once it wakes up.
Is this a known issue - is there a workaround? or fix?
I am using a Cube i7 Book (skylake) if that makes a difference.
All the best,
Dan
Bump - in the absence of a solution - any trouble shooting advice would be greatly appreciated.

Internet (WiFi&GSM) randomly stops working until reboot

My Samsung S7 Edge (running Android 7.0) has, for a while, been having the following problem: every so many days, without any obvious triggering cause, the internet ceases to work - in any app, and both on WiFi and on mobile connectivity. Things are only back to normal (i.e. the phone receives data through its WiFi/3G connection) if I restart the phone.
This occurs maybe once every 2 days or so, and is of course very disruptive. I always let the phone install OS updates but it doesn't look like any of them fixes this bug.
Any ideas? Thanks!
same here with a galaxy s8+. I observed that happens when hanging up the phone, especially in car, via bluetooth (though, the bluetooth detail can just be random).
Hm, in my case it doesn't seem to be at all related to phone calls, or at least it's not obvious how (perhaps after a given number of calls, the internet freezes, though it seems very random)
any more thoughts at all?

Export Nexus 5 display, with broken screen, on external monitor

Hi
This is a weird request
Background:
My Nexus 5, 32 GB is having display issues. At times the display works fine for hours but then there are times where the screen is just blank.
Service center says that it is not a display issue but fault with motherboard.
Current State:
Anyways, nowadays the display is not working at all. I can see that the screen is lit up at edges, but is blank. I wish to backup the data (photos, whatsapp etc.).
Query:
Is there any way to achieve this, without the phone display working. Maybe by exporting it somewhere else ?
