Really slow 4g speeds. Bad sim? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I was running a cm7 rom, and for the most part, I always keep my phone in 3g, unless I'm downloading or doing alot of web surfing. Anyways, I toggled my 4g on, and the speeds were ridiculously slow (0.5mbs down) . It was like that for about a week. I just figured it was a rom issue?? Well I flashed a sense rom today, and the 4g speeds are just as slow. My signal indicator shows a full signal (4g) but the up/down arrows are constantly lit. I even tried flashing back and forth between the 802 and 906 radios. Has anyone had this problem? Is it a bad sim? My 3g works fine...

If it was a bad SIM all you'd get would be 1x and no 3g or 4g.

Update: I had my wife test her 4g speeds at work and they were fine (tbolt). When she came home, I re-ran her speedtest, and it did exactly what my phone does. I must just live in some weird pocket.

4G down?

I'm in Atlanta and it seems 4G has been down the last few days. Anyone else notice this or is it my phone? I haven't really changed anything, just installed a few apps.

It has been kinda iffy here in Arizona also the speeds have been really low as well
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
I'm also in AZ and can confirm i'm only seeing 1X where I normally have strong 4G/3G Signals.
I'm in Connecticut, and seems like I'm having a similar issue. However, I'm rooted, running Gingerbrick radio/ROM, and been changing kernels as Imoseyn puts out new ones, so I was not sure if it was the network, or bugs in the GB software.
No issues in Charlotte. I am currently in the middle of a medical building with no windows and 3 bars signal strength. I just got over 15Mbps down and close to 8Mbps up on Speedtest.net.

In washington dc...i'm getting 3G but not 4G. However I did update the kernal before I went to bed last night so that might be the issue.
EDIT: Rebooted and 4G is back.
Thanks
No 4g where I'm at in cali... But I can say for the past few days, 3g has been slow if at all. Have to do reboot just to get anything and it will say 3g in my phone but no data when I try using my browser and all. (Data turned on)

STL here, 4G zone, into and out of 1X off and on all day.

4G still having problems in NY?

Good morning community,
Anyone else still experiencing 4G problems in NYC? It will stay on 4G for about ten seconds, then I will lose connection all together, before it reconnects to 3G.
My radio settings are correctly selected at CDMA+LTE/EVDO auto and I am on the MR2.0 radio.
This has been happening for me since yesterday.
Thanks!
I'm having the same problem and it's been like that for about 3 days now. I'm on CM7 so it can't be the radio.

I updated my kernel this morning and thought that was the issue with 4g going in and out. I'm glad I saw your post. I'm in new york too.

Have not tried going back yet. Switched to 3G only and that has had a steady signal, albeit very slow......LOL
Verizon had 4G issues about a week ago, maybe there are still residual lingering issues?
not sure what is going on. the first 3 days with my bolt were great. i was on the OTA update (MR1 i am guessing) and had 4G singal at work and everywhere else i went, pulling about 20mp/s downloads all day long. but, for the last 5 days i have had spotty 4G, zero 4G at work. when i can connect to 4G i am getting like 5mp/s downloads. and that is IF 4G doesnt hang and not load anything. starting to get frustrated....not to mention, my buddy who sits right next to me at work has a droid Charge witth 4G and pulling just under 20mb/s here.
wondering if it is a LTE/ thunderbolt issue. the TB and LTE are not playing nicely together. not sure why that would be, but i dont have any other explanation.
having slow/non exhistant 4G with MR1, MR2 and MR2.5 radios.
im in queens. College point. Today 4g has been fine for me.

Slow 3g?

Anyone experiencing spotty internet. My tbolt says I have 3g but the internet is slower then dialup.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
i get that a lot with 4G when i'm tethering. i'll just turn off the radio, wait about 20 seconds, turn it back on, and then it's working normally again.
weird thing is, my friend does the same with her Bionic and she doesn't have this issue.

Is this some kind of play on words? "slow" and "3g"? on a 4g phone.
I never have any slow downs with tethering . I get consistent 4g speeds. What radio are you running?

Everyone be sure your battery cover is completely snapped on. It has part of the antenna on it.

Possible network issues

I live in a 3g only area, and today my phone has started showing 4g sporadically.
When the phone shows 4g my data stops working and then all data cuts out and 3g comes back.
I'm running viper Rom with snuzzo kernel. Could this be a software issue? The Verizon website does not have my city listed for current or upcoming 4g availability.

if you know you are in a city with no 4g and dont plan on getting it soon, why not change it to CDMA only? The phone might think its getting a signal from a 4g tower and its causing it to switch like that

This has never happened before today, so I was hoping it was me getting 4g in my area.....
I tried the cdma only setting, and my data as a whole is spotty now. My wife's thunderbolt is doing the same thing now.
Is this what its like when they flip the 4g switch? Does anybody else remember when 4g came on in there area?

they might be testing the 4g radio in your area and it that might be causing it. give it a couple of days, if it doesnt fix you might want to as a vzw rep. for me it was back when tbolt launched when we got 4g
What ROM are you using? I know that on some ROMS, like cyanogenmod, it's actually best to keep phone on the setting that supports multiple data modes.
I live in a town of 15k and we just got 4G, so u may get it after all...

Unreliable LTE connection

Hey everyone,
For some reason my GN3 isn't getting a 4G connection in my home or office, my GN2 gets a flawless connection.
I did all standard trouble shooting procedures with Sprint but no go.
I made sure the cdma/lte option was selected, turned off the connection optimization, reset the profiles and prl.
Sometimes the 4G will turn on, but it will disconnect quickly. Is my phone defective?
Thanks

I know in my area, theyre constantly turning on and off the towers as theyre making the transition to bigger and better speeds.
Hmm.
Now my 3g connection is gone, and I keep getting refreshing sim message pop up

Sounds defective to me. This phone has a stellar LTE radio, definitely up there with the Note 2.

Yeah a combination of both might really be giving you a horrible experience. This phone is amazing when getting a signal. I switched from the HTC One, which for me was a horrible phone for 4G or just signal in general. This phone grabs and keeps 4g anytime.

Actually it seems better than the note 2, I am getting 4g where my wife note 2 is only getting 3g in some spots. Yes we are side by side when it happens. Yes we traded phones to see if it was just the distance of a foot or two in the truck made the difference. It did not.

The 4g on my note 3 goes in and out. I can wake the phone and as soon as I do the 4glte icon disappears and the 3g icon pops up. No stable 4g connection at. Haven't been able to test the speeds because of this. Now my gs4 is sitting right by my note 3 and it has full 4g getting speeds up to 24mbps. Yet the note 3 is still only showing 3g. Both on the same prl. Both have lte enabled.

I get some issues from time to time; In Seattle, Sprint has yet to officially announce 4G LTE coverage.
I'm lucky to get it where I live and frequent but from time to time it just doesn't seem to work, it will say I'm connected but has DNS errors, perhaps because the connection dropped or they're upgrading a tower... When my connection drops I try cycling Airplane Mode a few times and that usually lets me connect.

I have to cycle airplane mode to connect a lot of times as well. Does anyone know why LTE seems to be so much tougher to connect to than WiMax? On my S2 that I just upgraded from you could set the specific db that Wimax connected and disconnected at as well as the specifc interval that it would check for 4g. It connected to and stayed connected much more reliably than LTE does. I live in a well covered area, but there are certain points along my driving route where the 4g will drop to 3g. After that I notice that it is very hit and miss as far as deciding to reconnect to LTE, even though the coverage is superb. If I cycle airplane mode, it connects with a strong LTE signal. This is after setting the LTE timer and the buffer timer to 1. Does anyone have settings that make the phone try to connect more often?
Did anybody ever figure out why this is happening, i just picked up my n3 while i was in denver where there is no sprint 4g, but i noticed as soon as i got back to my house where my n2 always got 4g and my wifes icrap 5s gets 4g but not my n3?
Here are the settings I use. 4G almost always. connection optimizer is removed on my phone too. If you use something to create shortcuts to activities you can access the hidden menus without using the dialer. Easy prl change is nice but since 4G is new in my area I stay on the newest the phone grabs from network.

Yeah, I'm getting general LTE flakiness lately, when previously it was fine. I don't know if it's the phone or the network. I seemed to have better speeds with my kyocera torque and s4. I'm guessing it's network congestion. In some places with decent signal, it has slow connection to no. Pisses me off when it drops down to 3g. I'm thinking more people are upgrading old phones and hogging bandwidth. Ten months ago LTE was much faster.
You guys think this would work??
