Surf and Talk at Same time? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I haven't been able to verify this anywhere. . . Will the S2 on the At&T network allow you to surf and talk at the same time (simultaneous voice/data)?
Thanks!

I believe that the majority of at&t phones will allow you to do that. I believe it is the differences in the way there network is set up that allow it and not necessarily the phones. But to confirm yes the s2 does allow you to do both.

This has always been the case on AT&T, smartphones being able to do talk/surf simultaneously. One of the main reasons I've stuck with them for this long. They are losing this edge quickly as most cell companies go lte as lte can do talk/surf as well.

This advantage AT&T has is not going away as quick as some think, either.
Verizon's Voice over LTE not enabled until at least 2012, possibly 2013.
Sprint does not use Voice over WiMax, either. CDMA for both... Ouch.

Any AT&T 3G phone ("4G" is just tweaked 3G) can do this when in a 3G service area.
Not possible on EDGE.

Oh, i wasn't trying to correct, just enhance. I probably spend waaaay too much time researching cellular technologies for a Server Admin.

[Q] Will I ever get to use LTE?

Is the ability to use 4g LYE in the software or hardware of the phone? I have an LTE sim card that came with my htc vivid, but as I understand (which isn't much), I will have to wait for an update or custom ROM that includes an LTE radio. I've also read that LTE phones have different modules in which case I would never get to use it on my i777. This phone is great and there's no way I'm trading it in for a Skyrocket just for LTE when everything else it's so much better on the i777.
Can any one tell me then, will I ever get to use LTE?
Hardware, google is your friend sir

LTE and our Exynos chipset dont get along right now, hence all the LTE phones having snapdragon processors. Thats the main kicker for me. and LTE is in very few places is ****ing stupid that at&t is starting to focus even the smallest amount on LTE devices

I live in an area that should have great coverage but I still only get an average of 6Mbps, would updating my APN settings from the old wap.cingular help improve my data service?

Is LTE actually worth it?

I have an i9100 right now and run data on the non-smartphone unlimited plan. I've only had the i9100 since October, but I'm thinking of eBay'ing it and getting the S3.
My question is, would I be better served to wait for the AT&T version so I could get LTE or just get the i9300, live with slower non-wifi speeds and enjoy a new, unlocked, unfettered phone?
AT&T prevented the One X from unlocking their bootloader; to me, that already says enough.

LTE is awesome, i have the skyrocket and Galaxy Note LTE versions. and they are super fast on the network, but i am bypassing the LTE and going the international SGS3 because i know that At&t is going to butcher this device stateside. not that it wont be fast.....but i want something un tainted by them......at least till the NOTE2 comes out, then i will all over that LTE phone....lol

LTE is great! But you need to weigh it against the cost of having it.
In no short order, to obtain LTE on AT&T, you must:
Give up the incredible Exynos quad.
Deal with ATT bloat.
Deal with ATT hard-branding.
Deal with ATT redesign (likely losing the physical home button).
Deal with ATT kernels/firmware and potentially locked down components.
Have less dev support (international versions always attract more devs-- myself included).
Be locked into using only ATT (or paying for a SIM unlock code).
Deal with (usually much) slower official OS updates and patches.
Know that you're "in the system" at ATT because they have your IMEI.
Deal with having no idea when the device is actually going to be released.
I'm sure I missed some.
So, how badly do you really want a faster cell connection?
Hopefully that helps you.

Great points, makes me feel even better about importing the S3 esp since this will be my first time doing so.
Also, a few have mentioned you can downgrade your data plan to medianet and save $ since the Int. S3's IMEI won't be in the ATT database & it's not considered a "smart" phone.
I will be happy to have the "home" button back since using my ATT Note that lacks it.

Yes, and yes HSPA+ which is being called 4G but is not LTE. Have LTE on my Note and while it's fast it sucks the life out of a battery. Will not give up quad core just to be on a LTE Bloated devices.
I usually get 1 or 2 down and right around 1 up which is more than fast enought to stream videos, internet works great, etc. Not that it matters to me anyways because my LTE connection speed is zero, there is no LTE in my area and it appears it is still several years away. Makes it a no brainer really... lol
Once you go LTE its kinda hard to go back to HSPA+
if you have wifi constantly its a no brainer.
Able to surf the web and stream HD videos on the road is very satisfying.
that's why Im so torn if i should get the unlock or wait for the LTE version.

I disagree, personally. I had my Note LTE for a few months that I just sold last week and have since been using the HSPA+ Atrix until the S3 is released. The LTE was great, mind you, and sometimes I had speeds up to ~50 down. Honestly though, the HSPA+ speeds I'm getting now are noticeably slower, but only when I'm actually downloading something. Really, that's usually only podcasts and app updates anymore, and the speed difference in the end usually nets to an extra ~10-15 seconds of waiting. I have zero issues streaming HD video and music to my phone with HSPA+, so the LTE would literally do nothing for me in that case (except for perhaps consuming more battery).
With data caps, it's even less of an issue. You wouldn't want to be downloading any large files over the cell network in either case, so you'll end up on WiFi for that stuff whether you're LTE-equipped or not.
Furthermore, the LTE radios right now are so power-hungry that I wasn't very comfortable using it on my Note. You actually use a lot less power with your WiFi radio ON.
Put that all together and weigh it against the benefits of importing the international variant. For me personally, that's the "no-brainer."
To me its not for a couple reason, 1.) We dont have LTE where I live 2.) Only time I use data is to send picture/video messages otherwise I'm always wireless. Also agree with everyone else on the ATT front, they really do ugly the thing up. I'd also rather have a quad-core than LTE. I'm a hardware over network guy.

Err, it's hardly 3.99G when 4G mandates 1Gbps and LTE can still fall into the "single digit Mbps".
Well were I live LTE is about 8mbs up/down on AT&T and H+ is 3-5mbs down and 1 up so no big deal for me. That non RGB 720p screen is, but I am still thinking about it.
I was on ATT before with 3G before, but not LTE and I haven't looked at their plan for a while. Can someone explain to me:
When you sign up for their LTE plan, do you get 3G also or no?
If no, can you also buy 3G and how much more is it?
If you can't have 3G free with LTE I think its not so good, especially if you are not living in a well coverage area, which 3G still has a wider coverage.

Not really sure, however, Sprint offers unlimited data, Verizon doesn't, and Verizon is still the #1 in the U.S. So, what that says, is Sprint is lacking other major areas: spotty Wimax, no 4G LTE yet, poor phone line up. My experience is Sprint offers more for less, but, that's not enough to keep people from jumping ship.
I guess what I'm getting at, is how can this really hurt Sprint any more?
The only thing hurting Sprint is their lack of a network, terrible 3G speeds, and no 4G LTE. I'm just waiting for the Rezound replacement to come out on Verizon and I'm leaving...had enough of it.

I'd do the same, however, I'd blow through the data limit. I have no issues with my 3G service (although it's less than desirable in speed) or my reception (until I go in to Wal-Mart, lol!). 4G/Wimax sucks. I wouldn't be able to afford Verizon. My bill would easily increase by 50%.
I'll pay more for better service. My service sucks up here. I'm forced to use the 0002 prl. I'm switching to Verizon when the sgs3 drops.

I don't think we have anything to worry about. Sprint can afford to keep unlimited data because their data speeds are 5 times slower than other carriers.
Does anyone see this network vision upgrade fixing the speeds? It may help, but I doubt it will solve all the network problems.

I thought i read, and please correct me if i am wrong, if you don't have a lte device it will only help call quality, not network speed. So our crappy 3g is still going to be slow. But if you have wimax, well then you still have it to use.
I don't think Verizon's plan will harm us per say . I actually think that it will drum up a little business for Sprint with them finally having a good summer lineup of phones and being cheaper. However I believe the next year to year and a half will either make or break Sprint. I for one waited patiently for the promise of wimax now like 90% of Sprint subscribers I'm still waiting for Wimax and or waiting for LTE. There will come a time soon when I'll get tired of promises and ditch them for another network even if it costs more. I'm not a speed junky but the 2/3g towers are so overburdened it's a joke in the 12 states i've been to I've never EVER gotten more then 1.2 megs with wimax or 3g while my sister in law's crappy old og droid opens 2-3 webpages while I'm waiting on one.

ummmm no. 3g speeds will increase since network vision also includes increasing the backhaul from the current bonded t1 backhauls many sites are currently using.
I see plenty of tower upgrades nearby, but no improvement in data speeds. I think people are expecting way too much from this network vision. Sprint just doesn't have the network size/capacity or money to compete with Verizon and ATT.

Ditto. According to the upgrade map on Sprint's site, every tower around my house has been upgraded, yet I still drop calls and get a max of 100kbps on 3g, even with full bars.
I am really struggling to find a reason to stay with Sprint. Sure it is great to have unlimited everything, but if I can't even place a phone call out of my kitchen, what's the value?
I'm waiting for the sgs3 to drop, if dev is the same for Sprint and Verizon. Then bye-bye Sprint.

I'm glad im not the only one that feels this way. I pay $70/month for crappy service. I could be paying $80-85 and have great service. I think that's well worth the extra money.
Sprint has really dropped the ball. I got my evo 4g it was the best out. They followed with the evo 3d and was still good. Everything since then has been dissappointing. The new evo 4g lte is far from good enough to make me sign a new contract. They never even got the 4g working that well in my area, even though its supposed to be. Not signing a new contact in a few weeks when my old one is up for their broken promises

As mentioned their plan won't hurt us because we have a crappy network. Verizon can switch things up because their network actually performs. I can't switch because of those outrages prices and I'm pretty sure I would burn through a gig of data.
From the comments I read it seems like this move by Verizon may land Sprint and ATT some customers.
verizons plan will lose out on customers and bring more to other networks as said earlier in the thread. but it really depends on where you live, alltel and sprint have the better signals around here. plus you just cant beat unlimited data

Anyone else have their LTE on Verizon Prepaid?

Just wondering if you do, what prl you may be using or radio. I just got mine yesterday and put it on Verizon and I love the phone. I lose 3G at my house sometimes but for some reason Verizon has always been that spotty for me so there may be no cure....Sprint isn't the best either at my house. The best believe it or not is AT&T. Hey guys,
Quick thought and a question:
1. I have the LTE rocking on Page Plus, also a Verizon service. For those considering the Verizon network over Sprint's, consider Page Plus over Verizon PP for two reasons:
A. Avoid illegality of ESN cloning
B. Being kicked off the network for data abuse, cause they know those tiny, dumbphones aren't capable of such data usage
2. For those rocking these LTEs on VZW networks, even with the right MMS settings, can you guys confirm that when you get an MMS, you have to MANUALLY hit the download button to download the images? Instead of the phone automatically engaging the data to download the image, and then shutting the data off, much like all the native Verizon phones like the Rezound, for example?
Thanks for your help!

VZW prepay on a 4g?
I keep hearing how some ppl have their Verizon 4g phone on the Verizon prepaid service and I need to know how I get that to happen for me. I have a droid bionic with a 4g sim but I use the VZW prepay bc I don't use my cell but about 1/2 the month (dead area for cell phone coverage in the sticks where I live) so I don't want contract pricing. I've been using one of the Verizon prepay phones but they just aren't up to par for me and I love the droids. Somebody please tell me how I get this to work?!?! I've tried transferring my service myself online to the 4g sim but of course that doesn't work and you can't even get a Verizon rep to even discuss it. Is it a matter of getting a different kind of sim for the phone, i.e. a 3g sim if they even exist in the VZW world. Is there such a thing as a prepaid sim versus a contract sim? I'm lost!

No simultaneous data over 3G!!

While this isn't a deal breaker as I get 4g about 90% of the time, it may be a bummer for other people. The galaxy s3 can do data and voice simultaneously while on 4g and 3g. I don't know why they did not include it on this phone. The gs4 only does simultaneous voice/data while on 4g. I download files all the time as well as ROMs and would hate for my download to be interrupted or broken if a call comes in. Just posting this to help anyone who has not yet purchased their s4 and has to have this feature... You have been warned!!

i remember no Verizon phone was able to get data while on a voice call prior to 4G LTE deployment. And I remember AT&T took that as a marketing advantage against Verizon.

3g, being CDMA for Verizon, is not capable of supporting simultaneous voice and data. The Verizon Galaxy SIII was not able to do it on 3g either. Hopefully it won't be a problem too much longer as Verizon moves away from crappy CDMA and covers the whole country in tasty LTE.

^this! word!
yea, most areas already have 4G LTE compared to the other big 3 providers. I'm very happy with Verizon's LTE coverage.

The GS3 IS capable of doing voice & data simultaneously over 3g CDMA. I've done it many times. For the first few months of owning the GS3 my area was 3g only and I would talk and surf simultaneously all the time.I wasn't able to do it on any of my previous phones.
Thankfully I have LTE now but the GS3 can do CDMA+Data
I'm not familiar with the GS3, but I know the Thunderbolt was capable of simultaneous voice & data in either 3G & LTE, but that was because it had multiple onboard radios. The major downsides with having multiple radios is that it raises cost and constantly draws power (even when off due to leakage current). They probably made a design decision to not include additional hardware for simultaneous connections because LTE has become prevalent (as well as WiFi) so this isn't a major issue for most folks.
It was my understanding (since I've been with verizon, and 3 phones so far) that CDMA is 1X (equivalent of Edge on GSM) and EVDO is 3G while 4G is LTE (which uses a GSM style signal if I'm not mistaken also).
Granted the only phone I was forced to use 3G on was the Thunderbolt (no 4G LTE yet) so I guess I can't compare, but this is interesting if it actually is true. I'll have to try it later... tether in 3G mode and call someone

Thunderbolt, that was a huge "forum" selling point on VZW. I don't think they ever publically marketed that feature!

That is patently false. You may want to read the white papers on the last couple of generations of Snapdragons as well as the FCC filings for some phones. The simple fact is that the Verizon Galaxy SIII is capable of SVDO, along with a handful of other phones such as the Incredible 4G, Rezound, and Thunderbolt.

I guess it's good to be set straight and educated. Thanks for lesson, Najaboy. I honestly did not know this.

Actually... thank you for not taking my post the wrong way. In hindsight, it could have been worded better so as to not have a condescending tone.

I think that all 4G Verizon phones do. More interesting to me is whether the S4 has SVDO like the S3.

My HTC Rezound was able to do data and voice over 3g as well. I'm a little underwhelmed and overwhelmed at the same time with the S4. I like it, but there are some things I liked better with HTC.
SVDO on Verizon was never simultaneous over 3G itself, but data over 3G, and voice over 1X. eHRPD has nothing to do with SVDO as it's just the communication network used to hand off 1X to 4G. Apparently the Sprint GS4 can't do SVDO either, so it seems to either be a limitation of the new radio in the Snapdragon 600, or Samsung chose to not add in support this round.

You're a little confused on what eHRPD does, but in essence, the rest is correct.
Alright, so it is pretty much certain that 3G and voice are not simultaneous on the S4?

Since Verizon now covers 497 markets and 95% of their 3G footprint is also LTE, this warning will only affect 5% of Verizon customers. Glad i'm not one of them. Sorry for those of you who still live in the Boonies....well not even just the Boonies since Verizon is often in the Boonies. You guys must live in the BOONY of Boonies!
