I've been doing this whole "reading" thing about flashing and all that, but some confusion is still there.
I have rooted my newly got SGS2 (i9100, UK).
Now what ? I'm looking at Darky's rom, but there are two files to flash separately: kernel (darkcore1.7) and ROM itself.
1. I was just wondering what is kernel in this situation ? Can i keep my current kernel, which was flashed by superoneclick(2.1.1) or do i absolutely need to flash darkcore ?
2. Same question applies to any other rom out there - can i use different kernel to the rom i may want to flash ? A lot of them come in sets (rom+kernel)
3. Another question - if i mess up kernel flash somehow, does that kill "download mode" of the phone (voldn+pwr)?
I have SGS1 flashed just another day, due to it being "expendable" now that i have SGS2, so jumped in and flashed it following instructions, but without solid understanding. Either stuff gets too complicated or i'm getting too old for this **** (I do have a background of messing with PCs, videogame consoles (ps1 era to ps3/360), winmo6 phones, gadgetry in general...engineer at heart )
You can use any kernel with any ROM. And no I don't think your Download Mode will be gone if you mess up a Kernel.
Kernel don't come in sets. You can choose your favorite there. See Dev section for more details.
Regards.
Correction: SuperCore, not darkcore...
Can i use cwm app (v2.0)to flash any kernels ? Or does it have to be odin ?

Rom>>That depends upon the instructions as always in the rom you choose for a custom rom .
Kernel is flashed via Odin Via CWM app or via CWM recovery .
Kernel is the core of the system between hardware and operating .

Ok, so saying that, What stock Kernel can I use for Cyanogenmod7 ROM?
I was using "XWKE7" previously.
The ZIP file that i downloaded actually replaced my kernel with its own.
I'm asking this as I wanna use Tegrak overclock which is only compatible with stock kernels.

Stock kernels will not work with cyanogenmod. There are no overclockable kernels available for it yet.

what is this and what does it do?
ensures you have no issues flashing different kernels.
Clears init.d scripts associated with Kernels, removes bln associated files, clears dalvik-cache, cache, and any logcat on/off

When flashing from one kernel to another. Right now the only two primary kernels are Entropy's DD and Siyah. Siyah adds etc/init.d/ scripts so this ensures they are removed prior to flashing a different Kernel.

So "when" should this be used? Between flashing new roms? Or can it be used to clean a rom you are using?
Btw the link is not working

Not to sound like a prick, but can't you read?
It says right under the first part of the OP titled "what is this and what does it do?"
in the OP it also the title says Kernel Cleaning Script.
@ sgs You mean before flashing a ROM, right? Or before flashing a new kernel.

Chill brotha. He's asking for when it should be flashed for proper usage. Not what it is..
I believe it should be used prior to flashing a new kernel. Also when changing ROM's which also contain a different kernel.

Well you do sound like one, I did read it and didn't say when exactly you were to use it. SO then, use it ONLY when changing kernels. So if you flash a new rom, then you do or dont use it? Only if youre running a rom, but decide to go to another kernel?

I think you're on the right track:
1) use prior to flashing a new kernel
or
2) use prior to flashing a new ROM if that ROM uses a different kernel than what you are currently using

Thanks that is what i thought, or at least figured out with your guys help. Just didnt know if it was useful in the middle of running a rom. i.e I just flashed the Siyah kernel to Miui yesterday, would this help me today, that kind of deal. So with that thinking, if I wanted to use this tool right now, I would run it, then flash the Siyah kernel again afterwards. Now, what about, when you restore a rom? I am about to put Shostock back, do I run this tool before restoring?
well, I restored, rebooted, then boot back into cwm, flashed the cleaner, then flashed the kernel I wanted, then rebooted.
After flashing SiyahKernel.
I make a point of not putting persistent cruft anywhere - not even rooting any more.

Is this something that would need to be done if flashing a different iteration of the same kernel? Siyah 2.6.1 to 2.6.3 for example?
I know you just said we don't need to run these kernel cleaning scripts for your kernels...thanks in advance. Also, is Pika's Bolt script compatible with your kernels or is it unnecessary? Just curious.

Depends on the kernel... If it puts crap in init.d or elsewhere on the system, then yes.
Note that it may also clobber stuff your firmware dev intentionally put into init.d - I believe gtg has a zipalign script along with a script to set the CPU governor to ondemand in Unnamed.
Awesome dude thank you for this! I had it on my captivate it worked wonders

I gather you just edited the script form the I9100 forums this thread samsung ultimate kernel cleaning script posted by buster041284... yes?
The scripts are very similar. Yours recursively deletes everything in the init.d folder and script posted by buster041284's version deletes specific files in the init.d folder.
I believe cleaning up scripts from Siyah's kernel prior to (re)installing Entropy's kernel is the only reason for us I777 folks to use the scripts.. . right?
Wouldn't you want to only kill those files vice every script in the entire folder?

Most cleaning scripts are about the same. I actually got the idea from the captivate forums back when it was my primary phone. Also updated the script to just remove siyah init's since that is the only kernel we have right now that installs them.

Gotcha... no surprise that the scripts would be similar. Good call on adjusting the updaterscript... folks might get a little concerned if you wiped their other init.d scripts too.
Hello there, and yes, i'm a noob
Tried custom roms and was never satisfied with them. Back to stock, and yet missing being a poweruser if you know what i mean! What are the recommended hacks/mods/tweaks that one can apply to takeover stock firmware? I have already rooted, tried changing dpi, playing with cpu governors, etc...but I want something reliable that can really improve the stock firmware. Like, is a kernel going to make it any better? Assumed that I do want to stick with stock (no pun intended) at least until CM9 (if ever).
Thank to you all and keep up the great job, everyone!

Thank you for your reply. As i said, i already rooted. it's a good idea to remove useless apps, i'll totally do this.
And so you say lag free and turboboost can be helpful? Won't they break or mess the perfection of stock rom (irony)? it's not worth flashing a better kernel, maybe with more governors/schedulers or ext4 support?
they will just make your phone better
normally phone has 110mg ram when u do ram delete but when u flash this it goes to 80mg
phone is faster more free ram
maybe try to flash CF root
dunno what else you should do
I have never flashed a kernel before. Which kernel should i pick for safe use, battery life and ext4 compatibility on stock (GB XWKT7)? thx

CF-Root
Even I am on stock XWKT7 and I dont have any problems with CF-Root. The phone is very fast, smooth and battery life is good too
Sent from my GT-S5830 using Tapatalk
I'm picking CF-Root + EXT4 and FS converter...is this ok?
p.s. i'm reading of b82 and b84...and also BLN and swap support...i'm quite confused...what am i supposed to do? i just can't pick power over safety! i'd like em both, so i'm asking for support on this!
CFRoot-b84 is the latest version of CFroot available for our ace. I am using it and I dont have any problem. My ace is running smooth with it

So here's what i did. Wiped cache/dalvik cache, flashed b84. then wiped again and flashed turboboostv8.5, and then lagfreev3. Then i rebooted and in CWM Manager i flashed b84fix. Then i installed CF-Root-ext4-v1.3-Addon.apk found in Chainfire's thread, but when i launch this app it says that a CF-Root kernel was not detected and therefore ext4manager may not function properly. i ignored this and choose convert to ext4 option nonetheless. phone reboots into recovery, does something very fast and then goes back to normal functioning. seems like nothing happened. what should i do?
P.S: i have understood that i need to use another ext4manager on s5830. i am successfully converting to ext4 fs. thanks
Bcoz u have to install kernel via cwm app not install zip from recovery...
The b84 fixed is a kernel not to flash in recovery but in cwm app...u have option to install kernel there...

Thank you, but i did install b84 in cwm recovery. in fact my phone is running cf-root kernel at the moment. as i stated before, everything runs nicely. as far as i can tell, this thread can be closed as well. Props to everyone who helped!
i upgraded my phone to 2.3.3 and flashed oxygen. now i want to get back to froyo ( because i want to flash mik' os cm7) but i forgot to backup. There is another thread about this but its down and the link is broken. Anyone could upload a flashable froyo stock rom?
actually u don't need to flash froyo ROM, just change your base band to old ones (yes, the froyo ones) but just change it via LGMDP tool, search somewhere in this forum.

if you want to use mik's os on new bb, you can still use it by copying new baseband fix over mik's os
just copy these files to system/lib and set the permissions (rw-r--r--) and reboot
You have froyo rom stock in zip here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23168177#post23168177
And if you want test CM7 of mik, use the 6.5.8, stable, free bug
how do i set permisions?
i cant seem to copy thoose files to lib because its read only.

ok. thanks. how do i set permisions?
ps. ill just do it with lgmdp. gb eats my batt to much and overall 2.3.3 uses .35 kernel 2.2 uses .32 so miks cm7 and francos kernel 19.4 bfs should be a good performance combo.
ok so lgmdp doesnt find my phone. (in the ports), i failed to copy baseband fix and change permissions. how can i fking get back to froyo now!

did you had lg usb drivers installed and turn off all antivirus/firewalls before doing the flashing with kdz/lgmdp
just type device manager in search in windows 7...or find it in control panel...under modems head u'll find lge modem.right click on it and disable it...now connect ur phone...u'll see it it in LGMDP now...
I'm currently running my S3 with the german XXBLH3 Firmware and rooted with CF-Root.
Now I want to apply this mod to expand my memory: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1772234
The problem is that my Kernel doesn't support init.d, so the mod doesn't work at all.
Is there a way to get init.d support with stock Kernel? I don't really want to install a custom Kernel and rather keep the original one.
I found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1710980 but it's apparently only for HTC one X and one S.
Can anyone confirm that it works on the S3 ?
otherwise, is there a insecure stock Kernel with init.d support that comes close to the one in XXBLH3 ?
And if I install a custom Kernel with autoroot (Siyah f.e.) will CF-Root interrupt it?
2 ways to do it..
1. Flash a already hacked stock kernel
2. Pull out your kernel and hack it to include init.d support..
sent from here, there, somewhere!!
Okay the first method sounds easier. But where do I find one?

You have a kernel thread in the stickies..if you don't find the one you want..post your kernel here..i will add init.d support to it :good:
