Sorry,my bad. As suggested - his wifi was on.Thanks for the APN settings suggestion. In general Atrix's 3g/4g data is faster though.
You might want to try the suggestion in this site.

I tried it but was to no avail since I can't remove the stock APNs baked into the stock rom.

If I'm not mistaken, we don't have 4g on the S2. It's only HSPA+.

Actually, the GS2 should be faster on the same network. The Atrix has a 14mb modem, while the GS2 is 21.

In most places, AT&T '4G' is about the same speed as 3G. In rare locations you DO see real HSPA+ speeds, they are mostly < 10mbps. I don't know about Atrix, but I suspect AT&T didn't have any 21mbps towers around, only 14mbps towers. And those are theoretical speeds, not real world speeds.
In my house, my 4G speed is about 600kbps down and 100kbps up.

I don't believe it. He had probably his Wifi on. 14 mbps never. I had an Atrix and I get with both phones the same speeds.

The g2 has data speeds as quick or quicker than what other providers refer to as 4g. I don't care what you call it though... If it's fast it's fast.

would it make a difference? probably not in may case anyways.. i barely get 3G connections around my area..
I thought they are calling it HSPA+? You can go to t-mobile website to see if you are getting it soon. Unfortunately, they have not announced coverage for me. And the G2 is the only phone that can run HSPA+? So either way vibrant users are out of luck. I've also heard that it's not that much faster than 3G...can't remember where though.
Your TMO rep is an idiot. He said 4G because nobody has heard of HSPA+.
4G is a speed standard not a type of wireless technologe. As long as your speed reachs the stardard you can call it 4G.

Not true at all.
4G = 4th generation = the 4th generation of wireless data technology....
GPRS > EDGE > 3G > 4G/LTE

It's the exact opposite of what you said. 4G is a technology standard just as 3G and 2G are.
T-Mobile's HSPA+ network operates on a HSPA (3G) technology.

LTE, WiMax is all branded 4G but I don't think 4G it self is a technology.
HSPA+ is a new technology which is evo from HSPA (3G), but if LTE can call itself 4G why can't HSPA+?

YES!! Norfolk VA coming soon!! Now to decide on getting the G2 or waiting on the myTouch HD?? Decisions Decisions..
There are already someone hspa+ towers in our area. Some are in Norfolk and I know of one in great bridge... the great bridge tower was installed less than a year ago. Guess they installed hspa+ on it since its new. I got 5 megs down on that tower with my vibrant.

Yea that's what I was thinking. I'm hearing about too many problems with the G2. What Great Bridge tower you getting 5 megs out of? I live in Chesapeake and the most I've gotten was between 1.5 and 2.0 megs down in this area.
This totally fits under Vibrant Accessories wtf not to thread bash but wouldn't it be better elsewhere.
If you put [Q] in the subject of your thread do you really think it belongs in Accessories? I mean its not like it matches the sub: Q&A or anything :/
This page will tell you all about the new HSPA+ network.:
http://t-mobile-coverage.t-mobile.com/
If you scroll down youll see a mini map of the US on the left and under it a link that says "Learn more about HSPA+"
when you click it you'll see the area's that have already been upgraded along with the area's that are soon going to be upgraded.
I even attached a picture of the coverage map... I don't understand why people keep talking about this like its a secret/not real....
when a company comes out with something that other companies don't have, or even just something new that other companies do have either way they promote it...
1 look at tmobile.com and most questions are answered. With that much info on this subject this thread and the 50 others about the same thing should be dead... but thats just my opinion :/

HSPA+ is available limitedly on several phones already out the Vibrant included if you check signal under status u will sometimes see ur connected at those speeds but it will only show 3g the Touch Pro 2 / HD2 / MyTouch Slide and a few other phones will also get the limite HSPA+. The G2 is just the first to the the full HSPA+ and T-Mobile shall be calling it 4g soon.
Not true. We have hspa+ in nashville and I'm getting double the speed on my vibrant vs. 3g. I'm getting 850 kB/s. The g2 will get higher speeds but the vibrant is benefiting from the hspa towers.

Most likely the speed increase is NOT from hspa+ but from jobs done on the tower backend that increased the hard line capacity, aka internet bandwidth.
Hello all - I don't know if there's any answer to this or not but thought I'd throw it out there. I updated Android myself to 2.1 since apparently AT&T doesn't feel the need to. That has been a fine experience and I've experience nothing negative aside from the wireless network speed. My phone now always has the H (for HSDPA from what I understand) instead of of 3G, but downloads, web browsing, and YouTube are all way slower than they were before. It takes 10 - 15 seconds to download a 750k app usually. I have ran the speed test app from speedtest.net and its results confirm this by showing 44 kbps downstream & 750 kbps upstream speeds.
Is there anything I can do to fix this? I know that HSDPA is supposed to be faster than 3G but this is unbearable - I am almost tempted to use EDGE exclusively because that is all I pick up at home (EDGE service that is) and I get better performance when using the browser than I do with HSDPA (although that is probably more mental than anything since when on HSDPA I am sitting there staring at the phone thinking "What is taking so long!" and when on EDGE I choose something and then don't worry about it for a few because I know it will take some time.
Thanks for any advice!

This is probably a network coverage issue and nothing you can do about it from a phone standpoint.
Ha! I love the first response had a joker pic because I was thinking of the joker when I wrote "why so sloooow".
Anyways when you say coverage what do you mean precisely? do you simply mean at&t hasnt done enough in my area for hsdpa to be effective? I do always have a full 4 bars of strength on it pretty much.
Thanks!

Yes, I mean AT&T. Having four bars means that you have a good signal. It does not indicate however how much bandwidth AT&T has allocated to that particular area/tower.
Think of it like a wireless router at home or office. On your laptop or computer, you see that you have a strong WiFi signal but, that does not mean that you have a fast connection as that depends on your DSL/cable connection.
Get my point?
Got it, that's what I feared. So in essence by improving my phone with 2.1 I screwed my phone (currently) with hsdpa

No, it did not screw your phone. Your phone is innocent here. It is probably the network. AT&T may have a problem in that area. Did you try the speed somewhere else?
Nope, haven't tried it anywhere else. I didn't mean screw my phone, what I, meant was if at&t is not so good with hsdpa in my area I am stuck with those speeds until that is resolved because I can't force 3g (my speed when I had iphone 3g was usually around 1 mbps)

I am on att also with the 2.1, luckily im in an area where i get around 2mb/2mb sometimes faster, sometimes slower. Did you try the setting in wirelessnetworks/mobile networks/network mode/ tick wcdma only if not on H. could help not sure, just a thought.

Your phone automatically switches between H/3G/E where available. I also have AT&T and have debranded my phone and did not notice any lag.
your problem is AT&T.
H is higher than 3G. if you got problems with it it`s because the signal is strong enough to use H but it preforms worse than 3G (cunfusing ah?!)
Well I was outside of my town the other day, in the country and noticed I was in hsdpa somehow so I ran a test and out there I was getting on average about 3.7 mbps. I guess where I am most of the time just isn't an optimal spot. Thanks all for the responses!

Not sure if the modem's just not optimized for the US AT&T networks (yet).

to the OP and anyone experiencing slow network speeds, check you apn settings on the phone make sure you have the ATT phone apn selected (apn name phone) instead of the default Cingular apn...Phone is the HSPA+ apn but on unlocked international phones it defaults to the APN provided by your sim which is the Cingular one...case in point on my nexus i have to always manually input the phone APN after flashing a rom...
also even though 2 phones running on the same network maybe in the same physical location, they may not be connected to the same Cell Site Tower, as such each phone maybe communicating with different towers with varying degrees of network congestion, thereby affecting your speeds...it could also just be the area you're in...as another ATT user with an international s3 has posted screens of him gettin 8mb down

I'm don't think you can switch to the phone APN on the $10/$15 medianet plan... has this changed?
I understand cell towers, but you have to realize you're really reaching with that explanation... especially when I am able to get consistent 6-7.5Mbps ALL DAY on the GT-I9100 when I have not been able to hit 3.5Mbps downloads sitting in my office all morning. I'm talking well over 10 tests at various times throughout the day, SOMETHING is up.
CONFIRMED: phone APN does NOT work on the medianet plan, so let's not muddy the water and confuse the issue at hand.

NO, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying I'm seeing significantly slower speeds than my UK GT-I9100 when running the same exact speed tests at various times during the day. Could just be a modem issue as these phones were launched for the UK region, who knows.

The Rezound out of the box supports the 900 MHz and 2100 MHz bands, which are used internationally for 3G and HSPA+. In the US, AT&T uses the 850 MHz and 1900 MHz bands, and T-Mobile uses 1700 MHz and 1900 MHz. The Rezound is great as a global phone, but it's always been limited to EDGE data in the US. This has never changed with firmware and radio updates.
The methods in the thread referenced earlier will let you get the 850 MHz band working with a very non-optimized, weak signal. That means you'll sometimes have 3G or HSPA+ on AT&T. But unless someone figures out how to optimize the signal there, you're probably still going to be stuck with EDGE most of the time.

I don't think anyone is going to find a way to optimize it for a stable connection for a while. The thread has been very quiet for a while now. Some users did get different results and I read through the thread and some people got better signal using a calibrated sensation nv file.

Hmmm... Unfortunately it appears this isn't going to work as I hoped.
What's working: Voice and SMS out of the box... MMS, Data (2G Edge, speeds in the range of 15k to 50K) with some tweaking in the APN settings.
I tried the tweaks in the other thread and changing the NV settings, it would say it connected at HSPA+ and pull an IP address, but even with the AT&T tower less than a 1/2 mile in direct line of sight from my office window it would never open a web page or work with any app that required a network connection and signal strength was in the nether regions according to Network Signal Info.
Oh well... guess it was worth a shot.

I am now in search of an AT&T or other unlocked HSPA-capable Android smartphone, willing to trade my mint condition Rezound for it... Anyone can message me if interested in swapping a similar unit like SGS2 Skyrocket or HTC Vivid... Or perhaps I should just grab a 16GB Nexus 4 from Google?

I've been saving up for the nexus 4 but they might release a new nexus device . If you're eager to get a device , I would get the nexus 4 plus you can do some stuff to enable the lte radio. hecks yeah.
