So I'm an Android user since Verizon released the D1, now have a TP 32GB and am getting into webOS.
Just loaded the 3.0.3 leak, and found during that transition that everything on my TP was wiped...due to the activation/login issues, nothing was restored, which I think I get.
But I'm wondering - what is retained when updating to a new release of webOS when it's done in the normal way with an official OTA release? I'm assuming that existing data/settings are retained, and official apps from the HP app store are restored in some automated fashion. Is that correct?
Also, if you do a webOS Doctor due to a problem w/your TP, what data/settings/apps are retained/restored?
Thanks.
doctor WILL wipe out all your apps, so typically, you have to make a backup (under settings) and it will automatically restore everything.
but since 3.0.3 is a leaked beta, and the dev reg server is shut down, it wont provide that service. (your backup is linked to your profile and saved to palm/hp's/servers)
you can reinstall/sideload apps and use preware, but it wont automatically do it for you.
EDIT if your TP is borked, and you doctor to a legit version, your apps/settings will be restored, except for preware stuff (govnah, kernels etc.)
You can use impostah to get your tp to sync from the cloud on 3.03. I'm not sure what, if anything is stored on the tp because you have to restore from the hp cloud every time you update.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
its quite the nuisance, especially since the server is always busy or slow :/
i didnt think the could still updated 3.0.3 beta's it did for me when it first leaked, but i thought they would have disabled it. mucho appreciado!
You can use impostah and another hack to fix the log-in issue after you've installed 3.0.3, but that's after you have to skip log in after flashing 3.0.3, so you don't get any restore of your stuff from 3.0.2 when you install 3.0.3.
I heard putting the new leaked version will block android installation later cuz cm has been working off the old 1

When updating WebOS the official way nothing is lost, assuming all your apps are official as well.
If you're sideloaded any apps or installed anything from Preware you would have to check from the developers if there is any conflict with OTAs.

Just had a manual update notice that AB 1.5.1 is ready, my pro is currently running 1.4.2. When I try and update though it fails installing saying the package isn't signed properly.
2 reasons I can think of but would like to know why. 1. I have patched my market, so maybe the update isn't suitable for this phone even though it's showing? 2. My presvious version was a patched version someone on xda did to rip out the ads, and maybe this isnt helping?
Either way, I need to keep my data which is 3* for all and 17 eggs, but NEED ham em high, so any work around?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=942559&highlight=angry+birds
I'm not sure how that link really answers my questions...
However - I used Titanium Backup to back up existing app and data. I then totally deleted AB from my phone. After a reboot I was then able to install the latest version from the market - and then managed to restore the data only back from Titanium.
Bit of a hassle and still no idea what actually stopped this for installing normally but at least it's sorted.
I'm looking a bit more at rooting via manual nooter on OS 1.4.1.
As of now, the Android Market is not working
In my hands, the BN shop is also not working. Books cannot be downloaded. (The reader does work, though, so you can shop and then download to your PC, then push the files in manually if you like.)
Together, those two elements not working argue against rooting 1.4.1 for anything other than study and development, I think.
- 1.4.1 installs on a device which had already been rooted (this device is rooted but not overclocked.)
- boot from a manual nooter 4-5-18 disks works
- after applying MN 4.5.18 and the APK enabler, the device booted. Root was retained and SU works fine (I was able to use adb wireless)
- install via ADB works
Other things to be aware of:
- this is not a Gingerbread release for the NC.
- the home button behavior is changed a LOT. Home Catcher for the Nook Tablet will also work here, though.
- the device automagically snarfs Google contacts if it's registered to a gmail address, it seems. There is no warning on that. I think that behavior is a Big Effing Problem.
About to try hopefully it works. I know I couldnt install update on 1.3 with CWM going back to complete stock and then update and then MN.
Yes, if CWR is written to your boot, you cannot install BN updates.
It might be possible to use a flashable 1.3 installer to write only /boot, reboot, then update to 1.4.1. I know there is a flashable 1.3, but I do not know where it lives.

Yeah I went back to 1.3 stock and then to 1.4.1 update.
It would be nice if some one conforms about Market
"It would be if some one conforms about Market"
Yeah, wouldn't it?
I'm figuring from the lack of screaming it's probably working.
Market is up. Some apps still missing. Having a bit of problem with Zeam launcher. Nook launcher is taking control.
Straight from my ICS i897 Sonic Screwdriver!!!!!
So from a rooted 1.3.1 you:
Use CWM to install a vanilla 1.3 ROM, then update to 1.4.1 via B&N download, then root using only 4.5.18? I seem to remember to root 1.3.1 you needed to root with 4.5.16 and then 4.5.18.
I have been able to use 4-5-18 without any problems on both 1.2 and 1.3.
You may not even need to install the vanilla ROM - you may well be able to install to a rooted device, so long as you have not meddled with /boot, either by installing a CWR boot internally or by overclocking.
My fast experiment this morning involved updating a rooted 1.3, then rooting that resulting 1.4.1.
Anyone check to see if it will still boot from an SD card, just want to confirm before update, but because it is still rootable I can always downgrade.
Edit: I am in the process of updating as I type this, I will post the results in case anyone else needs them.

Others have tested and confirmed, but that's not something they can change on this device with a software update anyway
Good to know, I hadn't seen it yet but my testing confirms this, thanks for the reply

In my case the Market runs but it's totally useless: I can't see my apps, it doesn't find most of what I want to install and when it does I can't install anything (it just goes back to the Apps menu). So it totally sucks since the B&N market is really lame!

For whatever reason, many Nook Colors that come stock with 1.3 installed just bootloop if rooted with 4.6.16, even if rooted first with 4.5.18. I can confirm this with a new NC purchased for my girlfriend's mom. Runs OK if just rooted with 4.5.18, except for it having the ancient market. Haven't been able to update the market yet, though gmail will update itself.
Updated to 1.4.1 (had to return to stock 1.3 to install the update, even without CWM flashed), using homecatcher to overcome the new "n" button "feature", but market is hit and miss. Was able to download and install Astro, but Titanium Backup doesn't want to download and install. I'll try sideloading it later.
What's the new n button feature? Is it possible to make a flashable update, like with 1.2 and 1.3?

If you press it once, it brings up the B&N "dock" that used to be at the bottom of the screen. If you press it twice, it brings up the B&N launcher.
Correction, I thought I was able to download Astro from market, but apparently I didn't. Now I've got no way to sideload apps, which makes this pretty useless...

ADB commands are your friend! Pretty much as long as you can enable ADB you can sideload with zero issues.

I realize this, but this nook is a gift for my girlfriend's mom, who lives out of state, and I know there's no way she's going to sideload everything using ADB... I need to get her a working market, even if I've got to go back to 1.3 and disable the update.
Ended up using 4.5.18 on my stock 1.3 NC. ADB Sideloaded in the Kindle app and a couple others and used the Nook App Manager to drop icons out on the main stock launcher page. I was really looking to add teh Kindle app so I could read all my purchased books on a single device, so I'm quite content. I'd like to see better market, etc but it's not a dealbreaker for me.
Just in case someone follows this thread, rooted 1.4.1 is working well now. manualnooter-5-12-18.zip does it for ya.
Market works. You can add non-B&N apps to the B&N app and home screens using Nook Color App Manager. Putting the Kindle app on there is no problem. Netflix, HBO GO and Max GO work. Hulu Plus refuses to run on the device. B&N subscriptions download and update the dock. B&N enhanced content (e.g. Wired magazine) work fine.
If non-techie friends and family want an enhanced B&N Nook Walled Garden experience, this will do it!

Does the update do anything to my CM7 partition or is it safe to update?
someone over in the webOS forums said it installed fine and didn't mess up cm7. I'm actually posting from webOS and downloading as we speak, so I guess I'll see in a few minutes.....
Moboot might be be removed just like the previous upgrade. if so..

yeah, I just reconsidered my decision to install it. With ICS being close, I don't wanna get stuck in webOS. I'll just wait and see what happens....
I have updated and it has left moboot 0.3.5, cwm and xron all intact.

Your device will be fine. I've been through like 3 3.0.5 updates already and they all keep moboot. If it does erase it, just reinstall moboot alone with acmeinstaller and your CM data and everything will still be intact.
if the update throws an error: remove all patches, uninstall custom kernel, remove/uninstall any visual enhancements, open Preware and install "emergency patch recovery", Doctor. All in that order but not necessarily all of them.

updates
So, I just updated both my TouchPads.
The one with stock WebOS 3.0.4 (no android at all), installed the update with no issues. I did disable (not uninstall) the UberKernel to PalmDefault prior to update and it worked fine.
The other one, which I had XRON 2.9.1 loaded, failed the first attempt. I had disabled (same as the other one) the UberKernel but that did not help. So I uninstalled the kernel and the second attempt seems to work fine. I installed the kernel again once the update was completed.
One with the XRON also had the latest UberKernel where as the stock one had an older version loaded. I am not sure what difference that makes, but that is what I experienced.
They are both using the latest UberKernel and all seems fine.
Android components (moboot & cwm) are left intact after the update.
edit... spoke to soon. I am stuck in a bootloop. I am attempting to reflash the XRON 2.9.1 and see if that brings it back. I am however able to see moboot and CWM loads and works fine. I am reloading the rom via CWM as I type... I can see the bootanimation... and... android lives again... ^_^
Everything went smoothly with update no problem here moboot & cwm keeps intact
WebOS certainly feels more responsive and fluid

same here. Tried to remove patches and Themes, but no luck =/ Will try everything else i can do, then use doctor
So I removed all of my patches before updating and now after updating when I look in pre ware there are no patches and when I search for them none show up. Is this because the patches are not compatible with the new version yet? Or is there something I am missing? Thanks!
Help please!
So i guess I messed up. I thought I only had to uninstall uber kernel after an installation error. That isn't the case. Now I no longer boot into moboot at all and the screen just stays at www.palm.com/ROM. What do I do now and is there a way I can get to/restore the android operating system without losing it? What will happen when I webos docter it? Will it erase my partitions?
such an idiot
I'm such an idiot, I just saw the update and I clicked download and install without checking the forums first.
none of my patches work now, and i've lost my overclock. do I just need to wait until the patches are re-released or do I need to do something else, also how do I ,get overclock back? will thus fix itself when the patches re-release?
I'm totally lost.

You are correct, give yourself some credit. The patches will be updated and should say update under preware when available.
Not everyone is ready to release updates the same day as HP. So give them a few days and they should update. Possibly longer.

my touchpad was also bootlooping, I was freaking out. Uninstalling android diddn't help, and trying to reflash moboot failed to. The only thing that worked for me was to use Webos doctor. I guess il'l reinstall android on the touchpad when ics comes out.

OK i didn't get an answer so I went through with the doctor repair. It worked! Then I went about putting android back on. I did that and to my surprise, when it booted my newly installed cm7, all my set up was still there. The partion must not have been touched. So don't wait for ics, your stuff is still there. Just get it ack up and running.
I do have one more problem. Preware won't install. Keeps saying system is busy. Anybody get it working or have a way past that?
Edit: and it works now! Server must have been busy.
fyi, on a fresh instll, there are no patch under beta-patches. however, uberkernel, worthog, and F4 are available. and of course govnah is available.
Hmm now to decide if I like WebOS enough to take a chance on losing android or webOS bootlooping.
I had enough trouble getting it all on here the first time around.
So, step 1: remove anything I installed via Preware(everything, just in case)
Step 2: Download webOS 3.0.5
Step 3: Attempt to install
Step 4a: if it installs, done? Or reinstall moboot?
Step 4b: If it fails, run webOS doctor, then install android, cwm, and moboot again after updating to 3.0.5?
That right?

I just noticed that a new update to version 1.4.2 started rolling out Monday, February 20, 2012. All those with a rooted 1.4.1 NT that weren't blocking updates because "there isn't an update available now anyway" may want to look into it now.
I haven't heard any details concerning what this update fixes or adds but, if recent history is any indication, it very well may break your rooting and/or side-loading apps and who knows how long it may take our resident geniuses on here to come up with a work-around.
Be forewarned everyone.

It would be great to hear from somebody, if new Nook Tablets (16GB) are coming already with this version and if they can be rooted and reinstalled to CM7
Anyone wanting to can download it here.
The page notes "The NOOK Tablet Ver1.4.2 update provides minor system enhancements."
Edit: Also, BN_AlexG (admin at the B&N forums) said he will post the changes soon (post made 5 hours ago). Dean_Gibson also posted the changed files in the thread I linked.
Easy rooting
There should be no concerns about rooting. I was unable to upgrade from 1.4.1 rooted (w/Market, etc) to 1.4.2 (the B&N update detects an error and does not continue), but reverting to 1.4.0 stock (erase+deregister+reregister) and then applying my rooting procedure from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1413734 to root and update directly to 1.4.2 and reroot, worked. Since that is more sensitive to B&N changes than most rooting methods, other rooting methods should work as well.
I dont think the root block on the new 8gb nook tablets running 1.4.2 is what actually blocks rooting. I think the new wave of tablets have some changes beyond the rom that actually controls the boot sequence and prevents rooting from SD card. Not sure though... My newest video shows that no current root methods work on the 1.4.2 8 gb nook tablets and I dont think it will be long until they apply the same changes to the next wave of manufactured 16gb tablets.
Yes, it got me just a minute ago. Disabled Android Marketplace
Yes, 1.4.2 breaks things. Android Marketplace is now disabled on my Nook Tablet With SD card boot.
It pops up:
You must add an account to the device to continue. Do you want to add one now?
But clicking either button returns to the home screen
Other features seem to be working.

I'm going to assume you didn't have updates blocked via indirect's method or some other method, yes?
Or did you intentionally update to see if the updates would break stuff?

I rooted my NT two days ago using Albert's SD card method (thanks!), and thought I had for sure used NT Hidden Settings to block OTA. This morning I saw that the update had been applied, and a few things on my NT are now broken.
Now I cannot access the market. I get the same error as sherwingws.
Other gapps are broken now too including Talk, Currents, and gmail.
Can I just repeat the SD root process? Or do I need to make other changes before I attempt that. What are my options at this point?
Thanks everyone!
Also wanting to confirm that 1.4.2 breaks root. Rooted my NT two weeks ago using Indirect's sd card method and could have sworn that I blocked OTA updates, but about an hour ago got the update anyway and any programs requiring root won't run. This includes Android Marketplace. ::sadface::
Gapps broken also at first, BUT...using getjar app, I re-downloaded gmail and it had no problem installing and running. So maybe all is not lost?
Edit: Sorry, I lied about gapps. Ignore that, pls.
1.42
I am also having the same problem, no market place which also makes me sad. Anyone know what I should do?
Nice, that's would be great to here this update~
Hi,
I wanted to update my phone to the new 45.4.13(?) update but it keeps giving me errors since I uninstalled some of the stock apps that were useless (for example, AdService.apk). Is there a way to either mount a partition that has the factory setting stuff, or modify the update to not check the hashes of the stock apps I don't have, and if I can do the latter, would that break the update/my phone?
Also I want to hear if anyone has updated their thing to 2.3.5 after superuser released their ota survival, and did that work?
