[Q] is Kies absolutely necessary? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Ever since i installed and used kies to connect to my device via usb (somehow i got a samsung driver before that, that connected my device perfectly) it has been absolutely useless. i'm sure i'm doing something wrong with kies, but i am so frustrated with it i just want to abandon it all together.
I just flashed CM7
at the moment i'm trying drivers I got here ( http://drivers.softpedia.com/progDo...i777-USB-Driver-for-AT-T-Download-135411.html ) But when i connect my device and open up explorer... explorer just looks like its trying to scan/search something (With progress bar over the filepath bar at the top) but I can never get into the device, it ends up crashing a bunch of crap on my PC, i get frustrated and just rip my device off the USB. this happened with the driver above and kies. i tried both.
Debugging usb is off.
ALL i want to do is connect my phone to my PC like a normal USB stick.
**EDIT** SORRY. wrong section. didnt realize till after. feel free to delete.

1) uninstall any samsung drivers you already have on your PC
2) reboot
3) install this:

4) reboot
5) profit!
You dont need Kies - I dont have it and it works just fine.

Never used Kies in my life.
Also, this belongs in General until the Q&A section is created.

Samsung USB Driver for Mobile Phones... is this to be used for all Galaxy S II variants including Sprint and T-Mobile? Is it just a generic driver for all of their devices?

I believe it will work for any of the Samsung devices including sprint, tmobile, at&t SGS1 and SGS2

It's true that i had only but problems with kies, however if i use it with the WiFi it works fantastically...
And since most of the time I'm too lazy to plug my phone, i actually enjoy kies

I must be missing something, because when I plug the phone into Windows XP or Server 2008 R2, it mounts two drives, the internal storage and the MicroSDHC, as an E: and F: drive. No drivers needed.

you already have the drivers installed. Its impossible for anything to work without drivers.

The Samsung mobile drivers will allow you to eject/dismount (on the PC) the device all at once, without needing to do each volume one at a time.

I've never used Kies before. I really avoided it though. I also don't think I use the Samsung USB drivers, but instead the Google ones (Nexus S ones?). I didn't install any drivers since upgrading from my Captivate (CM7) so I assume I'm still using those. They've worked fine for Odin, mounting, etc. I'm also on CM7 again in my GS2 too.

Thread moved to General..not a Dev thread, but no need to delete either. Carry on.

[Q] Docking after root

Hello! I just rooted my Eris yesterday and when I plug my phone into my computer it doesn’t come up on my phone and ask me how I want to dock it (it is checked to ask on the phone itself) . When I first plugged it in and it tried to install the drivers it failed. Over at developer.android.com where I got and installed SDK it said to use pda.net to install drivers, which I did. So now my computer recognizes the phone and I can push apps over however the phone still will not give me the option to mount as a drive. Is there anyway I can make it mount so I can browse files in file explorer. Thank you in advance.
i'm assuming you are on a Windows PC...
firstly, are you able to mount as storage in Recovery?
also, not sure about the pdanet method (never used it)... but i know that if you install HTC Sync it should work fine (link below).

Sorry, yes. Windows Vista 32bit
To be honest, I'm not sure what I did but it works now. I plugged it into my laptop to charge and it wanted to mount with no problems. I Just tried it on my PC and it also worked. Even worked with the same usb cord I used last night so that rules out a cord problem
Thanks though. I didn't even think about trying it in recovery mode. If it happens again I will see where that gets me

[Q] Someone Please help

I have a Samsung Epic and i rooted it to put the wifi tethering. Everything had worked fine and i decided to try some rom's out and try to upgrade to 2.2 before my provider decided to senf my the download. Anyways i tried to do some stuff with odin in that regaurd and it would never work. I came to find out that it was not reconizing my device on the computer. I have had the phone hooked up before after rooted and it worked fine and i was able to see my sd card and do everything. For some reason no computer will reconize my phone. It installs only three drivers and reconizes all of them, but they are named different then before. It seems that something has happened to the internal program of the phone were it is not sending the correct driver look up to the computer. I dont get the ADB interface driver install to even pop up and try to install. I took my buddys epic and hooked it up to the same computer and it did the proper driver recognition and installed fine as well as the adb driver. I mounted his sd card and it worked fine. I plugged my phone in to same computer it did a totally different 3 driver download all sucessfull put they had different driver names and there was no ADB driver reconized or attempted to install. The proper drivers are already on the computer and every epic will connect just fine except mine. I have done a factory reset and data wipe as well as my sd card wipe and it still does not connect to my computer. The drivers that keep installing when my phone is hooked up is modem cdma technology driver and usb device. Who ever has an epic will know that when you first plugged your phone in you got the name of the drivers as they were trying to install well for some reason mine now say ( unreconized device ) on the three drivers and then downloads them from microsoft and all say sucessfull. Unfortunately sucessfull is not the correct word cause without that adb interface driver loading i cannot mount my SD card. I have tried this on 4 computers with different operating systems and none will see the phone they all load these three wierd never seen driver descriptions and none enable the sd card to be mounted. I dont know what to do i cant take the phone back to sprint to have the factory origianl program put back on it with the correct drivers cause the phone is still rooted. Factory reset did not un root it and i cant connect the computeer to my phone to unroot it. Any advise would be great. thanks

Samsung Galaxy S3 not recognized (with drivers)

I have installed Samsung USB Drivers manually and also tried Kies to install the newest drivers, but my Samsung Galaxy S3 still isn't recognized by my computer. What can I do?
EDIT: It only works sometimes, so when I plug it out and in like 10 times, maybe I'm lucky and it will connect once.

I have the same problem. My VSGS3 works with my W8 laptop but not my W7 desktop (at all). The only thing I can assume that it would be is MTP issues with Truecrypt (my desktop is encrypted). I cannot get it to work at all.
take a look at this thread...

dont seem like there is a solution yet.
Really???? S3 Not Recognized?
Maybe I missed something in this thread but is this really the case??? The S3 cannot be recognized as a USB storage device by Windows? I accidentally left my SD card out and now have videos I need to transfer to PC, but cannot via email or any other means I can find. Anybody have a solution? No USB storage for GS3 internal memory.

You can use MTP mode to copy the files to the computer.
The device will appear with a phone-logo in 'My Computer'
Just plug Samsung USB cable into USB port on a PC with the Samsung USB drivers installed and cut and paste as many GB as you want .SD Phone or EXT SD card via Windows Explorer as normal .

This problem is quite depressing Has a restore fixed it for anyone?
I use mac OSX and after searching for a month or so, I couldnt find a solution to connect via USB. So now I use 'Air Droid' app from Play Store. Its pretty good and simple!! Plus, you can do alot more stuff like send or read SMS from PC.. Dont need to connect via USB anymore
I found that installing that rootkit installed the drivers to connect via USB - didnt root it just installed it for the drivers. THANKS!
I am having the same problem.
My Galaxy S3 charges when connected to computer via USB.
But is not detected in USB Debugging or regular mode.
Which windows version are u using. Try installing pdanet.exe on ur pc

You must know what windows you use, 32 bit or 64 bit? Download Kies through Samsung website, make sure got right software.

If you are using x64 Windows 7 this will EXE file can be found here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Samsung\Kies\USB Driver\SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones.exe
back this up and then you can remove KIES. This is all you need to have your phone connected without ever really needing KIES.
Or you can use the driver provided by the TOOLKIT that MSKIP has designed (thanks - love it).
Cheers,
try disabling usb debugging
it worked for me

nothing has worked for me. I have not tried the toolkit but I installed drivers from the TeamEpic's easy root as described by QBKing77 and those have not worked since I installed twrp
One more to this incredible situation
experienced the same on my win7 64 bit. I removed it on the faulty usb port to another one and then luckily the driver installation went fine. Weird but worked.

[Q] Rooted P7510 - Not being recognized by PC

Hey there,
Here is a list of what I have before I get started.
Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Wifi (P7510)
Android Version - 3.2
Kernel Version - [email protected]#1
Build Number - INFAMOUS TAB 0.1 P7510UEKMM
Basically I have no access to my tablets internal SD card via my PC (Windows 7 and KIES)
I bought this tablet from a friend who rooted and flashed with the INFAMOUS mod.
I have searched all over the web for an answer and cant find something for this case specifically.
Each time I plug in my tab, my PC tells me that the Hardware ID is missing.
I can see the tablet in my Devices and Printers (displayed as SAMSUNG_android) as well as in my Device Manager. In device manager it says the drivers are up to date and functioning.
What have I tried?
USB Debugging (On and Off)
Clearing cache via recovery mode
Updating drivers via W7 and KIES via Samsung
I have tried following a few threads on installing the KIES software without internet connectivity. However I would rather not use the KIES Software anyway as it is kind of garbage.
I am looking to have access to the internal SD card so I can flash a new Rom on the Tab, however I would first like to even just have access to the file transferring.
Can anyone point me in the direction of help and me being able to enjoy this tablet?
I hope I have provided enough information. I am a pretty techy person and I understand how to do all of this but it seems like I am missing something really big.
Something to take note of, whenever the tab is plugged in (PC or Wall) there is a red x over the battery symbol and the tab charges very slowly.
Cheers

The Galaxy Tab doesn't expose the internal "sdcard" as a device that you can mount on your PC. If you enable it, it shows up as a MTD device.
The sdcard partition is formatted using a Linux native filesystem, not FAT, so Windows can't recognize it.
I use adb to push files onto the sdcard. ADB comes with the android SDK.

As stated, make sure you have your tablet in MTP, and if so, make sure to update your drivers.
Settings > Storage > Additional Settings (top right) > MTP
To build on the above, if you have uninstalled Kies but also the Samsung USB drivers, you will be unable to connect the tab. Reinstall (or maybe uninstall and reinstall if you still have them) the drivers. A lot of the times that is the issue.
Go to Settings>Storage>Options/Info (The one on the upper right)>MTP(Check this one)
hope this help
FIXED

Ahhh ha! As soon as I uninstalled the driver that windows found and used the Google Driver that came along with the Android SDK, the tablet was recognized. Alas, I can finally use this tablet.
In the end it was as simple as a driver error, I spent a very long time searching last night and now I just feel silly.
The tablet still shows the red X over the battery symbol, whether I have MTP with USB Debugging on or off. I guess this can be avoided with certain ROMS. Anybody know of a ROM that avoids this?
Thank you all for your immediate responses!

By the way you two, there is no option in 3.2 for this.
In 3.2 its Applications/Development/USB Debugging
In storage there is no option to choose MTP, it seems that it always has been enabled and I cant find it anywhere in the settings to change it.
Thanks for the input though

For honeycomb and many others, debugging is always there. Under the storage option, you have an Additional Settings button usually and it should be present in there. I was always running3.2 until like a couple days ago so surprised its not there. Oh well problem solved lol
I'm having a similar problem with my tab not being recognised by my pc (win7 64) or in kies. It was originally an M380W (Korean) model, which I updated to a P7510. That all went fine, and the tablet works perfectly, except for the fact that my pc no longer sees it when it's plugged in. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, but no dice. I'm going to see if adb works.

[Q] Data cable connection problems.

I installed Windows XP 64 on my work computer and I can't connect properly with the data cable anymore. The computer recognizes the phone but it either thinks it's a camera or a media device, and the stupid windows default software that comes up for cameras or media devices doesn't let me just copy files from the computer to the phone's SD card like explorer. When I had XP 32 bit installed the data cable worked fine. How do I get the computer to recognize the phone as a generic device again or a gadget serial or whatever?
Try going to Samsung's website and downloading the drivers.

yes I know about that.
The explorer type interface came up correctly for a Vibrant last night. I didn't think that you had to install a separate driver for every different phone. Also works with Odin.
Device manager lists a samsung android adb interface as installed correctly.
The computer makes a device connect beep when I connect the i717.
But for whatever reason, when I connect the i717, I get a choice between accessing it as a camera or a media device in windows and either gets something that limits me to the DCIM folder or windows media player and neither one lets me put roms on the card. this looks like some kind of windows thing.
