Stop switch between 3g and HSDPA/+ - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all!
I have a Galaxy S2, rooted but running on 2.3.5 official firmware (XXKI3 / XWKI8)
I have a problem with the data connection switching between 3g/HSDPA/HSDPA+.
I have excellent connection when on H and H+, but as soon as it goes back to 3g it gets stuck on the "up" arrow.
Is there any way of turning off this switch so that it stays on H and H+?
I've had a look at *#301279# but as far as I can see I cannot turn of 3g through there (or stop the switch).
I've also tried turning off fast dormancy but 3g connection still gets stuck.
Any help or ideas are greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
Siwan

You cannot turn of 3G and have H/H+. Just curious, when you swtich off H/H+ , so you are only on 3G and you have disabled fast dormancy, you still getting stuck?
I know this way you are loosgi out on high speeds, but does this at all works for you or not?
Thanks,
Vishal

Thanks for the quick reply!
Aha okay, well that's a bit annoying.
Yes I've tried with only 3g and fast dormancy off, but still the same problem; the 3g gets stuck on up arrow.

I would say it's an issue with your carrier. I'm with Vodafone Australia, and I have the same issue and even sometimes H staying on for hours.

[Q] A way to use ONLY HSPA and disable "3G"?

guys, I've been struggling with you all that my SGS2 is jumping from 3G <-> H <-> H+ and I don't know if it costs extra battery, but I'm kinda tired with the 1-2 seconds lag whenever I wanna use the data (like browsing).
I would like to know if there's a way to use ONLY HSPA but not the 3G? I know there is a way to disable HSPA leave only 3G, but I want it vice versa, at the end of the day it's an expensive device and I want to use fast connection on it. my old HTC Desire stayed connected to H at all time and I felt good about it.
well, any idea?
If I'm not wrong, I think it's a good thing that it keeps switching between HSPA and 3G. If it needs to download/upload large amount is data, it'll use HSPA and it'll switch back to 3G for normal usage which I think save battery in long term.

WCDMA
Have you tried using WCDMA only mode? This still lags?
For your question, dial *#301279#, change HSPA revision and release 5(HSDPA only). To return to previous setting, release 6.
HSDPA drains the battery a lot. 3g helps when in standby.

This is what I believe as well. The phone should switch to 3G when sleeping / stand-by to save battery... but for some reason, each time I wake my phone up, I can see 'H' on the Data Connection instead of '3G'. If I unlock my screen and wait 5-10 secs, Data then switches to 3G. But if I lock it and unlock again, it's back to 'H'. This has been draining my battery more than when I have WiFi connected.
I've searched for this issue on google, this whole forum but just can't find a post discussing about this issue. Maybe I didn't use the right keywords... I've been searching: "samsung galaxy s2 sleep 3g hsdpa" , something along those lines. Of course I tried combinations like just sleep 3g or sleep hsdpa etc.
If there is a discussion regarding this, could you point me to it please or suggest keywords to search for.

Are you talking about fast dormancy?
When Hspa is turned on when you unlock your phone, maybe there is an app or a widget that calls out for an internet connection? Those widgets that refresh in a couple of minutes maybe? Because in my experience H is only called when data is needed.
I'm aware of Fast Dormancy and the way it works, but definitely not what causing it to stay idle in H mode. I've switched it off before and still the phone wakes up to H signal.
One app I know to use the Data connection every hour is Beautiful Weather widget. I've disabled refresh-on-wake so it will only update hourly.

H+/3g Delay

Im so pissed off at this phone. Supposed to be fast but my browsing experience sucks because of this delay between 3g/h+
Before I get flaimed I have read before, I tried fast dormancy off, I tried disabling H+ and putting 3g only but the same delay exists. I also tried putting the phone in wcdma mode so edge gets removed.
I don't know what to do, I came from an iphone 4 and although the pages load slower because of hardware I could actually see the data progress going and loading up, here my sgs2 just stands for 10 seconds doing nothing and then loads up the page fairly quick.
Sometimes it doesn't even load and says page could not be loaded even though I have the h+ icon on.
Now If anyone experiences this and has some sort of fix plz let me know.
Im running westcrip 9.6 with lph, and have had this issue in previous roms too.
My network is Claro Dominican republic
Thanks
I have a similar problem! In my case the phone suddenly switches from H to 3G, I don't know why, and then goes back to H. This happens while I'm using browser, generally when I activate data connection and I don't use anything, it remains on 3G
My problem is that sometimes the delay may be 2 seconds and its managable but then it can go up to 15 or not do anything at all.
Same problem, I thought it's ok, but if it's not, then how to manage your data, without any delays?
just in case for someone who might know how to fix your problem u should give them/us information about:
your rom
your kernel
your modem
rooted or not
ps. wrong section btw...

carrier and location (country) would be good too.
EDIT: whoops, saw it's in the first post. Sorry.
Its normal to go from G to H+ when data is in use. As soon as the phone detects that it needs to access the network, it will achieve the H+ connection. Apparently it will kill the battery if its always on H+. This, I understand. But the part I do not understand is the delay from G to H+. I am not sure if its a carrier issue for most of us, or the phone itself. I am assuming its a carrier issue though as it has happened on every ROM or Modem I have tried from personal experience. Not sure about the OP. It does seem to take some time at times to get from G to H+ - upwards of 15 seconds or more. Also, if it can't get H+, it will not browse at all on 3G

I get the same issue with the 3G. It won't load anything on 3G connection but as soon as it switches to H or H+ it starts to load.

Yep, same problem in Moscow. It's probably related to device, nor to carrier. Kinda odd.

I don't think so. Seems to be a device issue. I just took a look at my Blackberry Bold 9900 I use for work and it always has H+. It doesn't go to 3G and then to H+ like the SGS2 does. And when I browse on that, its always ready to go, no delay. Not sure why our SGS2 needs to handshake H+ everytime
In my case it seems to depend upon the modem I use. kL1 works really well, however when I trialed ICS it was really slow as described.
Also, far less related, as for the mention of browsing, I use Dolphin and find that it seems to be much slower at either DNS lookups or redirects or something.
It's most likely because of your carriers settings. There's nothing you can do unless you call them questions about what their policy is at their end on data connectivity.

Network problems - Cycling though H H+ 3G

Hi,
My Galaxy S II seems to be having data network problems after upgrading to XXLPQ.
When connected over data, the phone will continue to cycle through 3G... H... H+... and repeat.
The connection is very laggy and ping will have about a 3000ms latency as the phone just does this over and over again. I tried using an older modem and it didn't help.
I am on three network UK user on gingerbread and my mobile network is slow has been for too hours.

Looks like a good old 3g data stall/hang issue.
Me too facing same issue, Samsung needs to fix this issue.
ICS XXLPQ is not fully polished ROM, it has lot of bugs & its bit buggy.
May be the UK version releasing on March 19 will address this issue.
Needs to wait and check this out
I'm using the LPE version and I noticed this too, except its when I'm on Wifi. There's two arrows, pointing up and down, the one pointing down is constantly flashing on and off, like it's downloading sometime, the upload arrow occasionally flashes, but not a lot.
Did you guys disable the fast dormancy by *#9900#? If yes, try to enable it again.

[Q] Why my gs3 cant't lock the hspa+ network

I'm confirmed that my hometowm support the 21M hspa+ network, but why my gs3 can't lock the hspa+ network. When I open the data,H+ just showed at a very short time, and then it turns to H.
And I moddified the build.prop hsxpa=2,and flash the modem.but it just can't lock:crying:who can help me. thanks
I'm pretty sure that phones will only go to H+ if they actually need it. Hence you'll find that if you start requesting data, it will switch over to H+ again, and then revert to basic H when it's done. Probably not an issue.

thanks,I know what you said, but I want to ask is that even it starts requesting data,it just stay at H,not H+.It just show at a very short time ,then it turns to H and alaways to be H.
In which case it's a problem with either your network provider or your phone. I'd suspect your provider primarily; give them a call and see if they can help.

and I have tried my white one and the blue one,it all can't,may be I should connect the network engineer
To expand to what anthropolyte said, the GS3 has a Fast Dormancy mode, where it'll connect to H+ network when is truly needed (heavy surfing/streaming, etc), and when the phone is mainly idle or doing light/periodical syncing, it'll switch back down to H or even 3G to conserve battery. As far as I know, Fast Dormancy must be supported by your carrier (which it does in your case) and must have a compatible phone to toggle between different network mode (GSM/HSPDA/UMTS, etc) to increase battery life.

but I have tried a lot of network things to do,such as online video, downloading sth,and etc.I saw there is nothing can even use the hspa+ network.I'll connect the network engineer and I think this is their problem.btw thanks a lot,and I'm a chinese user
mine alternates between 3g and H+ too. It bumps it up to H+ when I start using apps. The slight lag before it kicks in is not a bad trade off for better battery life.

[Q] i want to go full edge

hi everybody, because of the huge battery drain,(because the phone stays always on H+), i would like to change it to go full edge, because as i always using a pc or near of one, edge is perfect, for the notifications and that stuff.
currently im using the "Super Nexus Build 4, and his kernel([email protected])",
when i go to options and enable the 2G option, it works, but after an hour or so, it goes back to 3g, and a couple of minutes later, it stays again on H+
i tried changing the Band selection, and selecting just GSM(because im from south america), but nothing changes...
any suggestion?
Thanks!

Turn off packet data
Sent from Team Pirate's Transmitter Thingy
He wants data, just slow. But it won't help him.
OP, your problem isn't staying on 2G vs 3G, unless you have VERY bad 3G reception - switching to 2G only won't help. Look for the reason of your battery drain, check if your data connection is used excessively and by what app.

i always have good signal, but when i reach a point where the signal decrease, but alot, i mean, from 4 bars to 1, the edge connection goes into 3g, and therefore to h+ and stays on there.
dunno what else to do.

As Jack_R1 said, you need to find the cause of your battery drain. If your data connection is actively downloading something, then you have something running in the background that is pulling data constantly. Switching to 2g will not make a significant difference in your battery usage.
If your signal is bouncing between H and 3g or edge, this will drain your battery. A few roms have a built in toggle. TASKS aokp has it. I use it all the time and I can make my phone last 2 days with it being on edge
