[Q] Root tab 10.1 using linux - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, Im looking to root my galaxy tab 10.1 but the problem is all the posts I can find ref using windows. I rooted my galaxy S2 using heimdall, will I be to use this to also do the tab? Any help/links are much appreciated.
Its a GTP7510 32GB White UEKME running 3.1

Unfortunately the damn odin stuff of samsung is only for zindows...

hence the reason I asked about heimdall

Virtualbox?
I don't have any Windows machines, has anyone rooted using Ubuntu? How about using a Windows guest in Virtualbox? If you have tried this post a reply with how well it worked, please.
Even better, has anyone been able to root without connecting to a computer at all?

Yes.i did root my device without a pc.
You need to download a file from xda a.zip. explanations on the guide in first posts.
Use the browser to do download and flash from recovery.
I am on the move so i can`t give you the dirrect link.
You have to out the file on the root of the internal sd card.

I just had a look at the first post in Development section, it links to a 200MB+ 'FilesForDummies.zip'. I guess I'm a dummy because I downloaded it anyway and it contains no 'a.zip' file, it's for Windows users like all the other methods.
The top ten posts are currently ROMs, kernel patches or other how-to's that aren't what I am looking for.
A quick search for 'a.zip' in the Development section only returns this thread from June, which is just an OTA update.zip.
I thank you for the reply but I'm missing some vital details. Is there something more specific out there? I have no Windows machines, no way to 'install drivers' on an Ubuntu box, or way to run any exe files, etc. Am I overlooking something basic here? Thanks in advance if anyone else can answer this, too.

Just rooted my Galaxy Tab in openSUSE 11.4 via VMware under windows XP. Straight forward.
The .md5 file is just a tar file with a recovery.img inside it - there are plenty of guides on the internet of how to put recovery images onto HC devices, any of them should do the job just fine.

send me a pm if you still need help. i can send you a download link and you can use it with stock recovery
file name:Rooting-Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-10.1.zip
also here is the link to the post in xda.
I am refereeing to the retail 3g
erm .. ups .. i just read again your first post and you have the wifi verion only, the zip file is for the 3g version.

Fail
I decided to go ahead and try rooting in VirtualBox. I installed Guest Additions, and set an empty USB filter so any USB device could connect.
The tab is a GT-P7510, 16 GB wifi model.
I've installed 64-bit Windows 7 as a guest in Ubuntu 11.10 (also 64-bit). The Windows guest detects the Galaxy tab when I plug it in, and reports all drivers successfully installed.
This guide here on XDA has me using Odin3_v1.85.exe, which starts up fine. It never actually connects to the tab, though. This is as far as I get:
Code:
<ID:0/003> Added!!
<OSM> Enter CS for MD5..
<OSM> Check MD5.. Do not unplug the cable..
<OSM> Please wait..
<OSM> recovery-cwm_4.0.0.4-sam-tab-10.1.tar.md5 is valid.
<OSM> Checking MD5 finished Sucessfully..
<OSM> Leave CS..
<ID:0/003> Odin v.3 engine (ID:3)..
<ID:0/003> File analysis..
<ID:0/003> SetupConnection..
I waited 15 minutes then held the power button until it turned off.
I tried installing Samsung's Kies program, and it can't see the tab either. I used the 'Troubleshoot connection error' option which was useless.
Now the tab is stuck at a screen reporting 'Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again' That's not an option, since Kies won't see the tab. I tried anyway and it didn't work.
So, now I have an unusable Galaxy Tab and I don't know how to get it working again. Has anyone figured this out yet? There's no way I'm the only one using Linux that wants to root this thing. I consider this a defect in the product, & returning it might be the easiest way forward now. I'd strongly prefer to keep it and root it though. Any ideas?

Sorry to bump an old thread.
But I have the same question......
Since it is a year ago that the question was asked maybe there have been developments and can rooting/flashing nowadays be done using Linux.
Or can a program be used similar to Odin but then for Ubuntu.
The question I ask this is because I do have some problems using Odin on a Windows 8 laptop (separate thread created for this problem http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2135523), but I do also have a Ubuntu laptop.

It's a very old thread, but since I could not find easy instructions on the forum, I'll post a reply. Here's what worked for me on OpenSuse 13.2
1. Install heimdall (my version: heimdall-1.4.1-1.1.x86_64)
2. Download clocworkmod recovery:
http://download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-6.0.3.1-p4.img
3. Connect the tab to the computer and put it in download mode as described here:
http://androidforums.com/threads/all-in-one-basics-rooting-roms-kernels-more-9-4-11.382634/
4. Run (as root/sudo):
Code:
heimdall flash --SOS /home/myrosia/Downloads/recovery-clockwork-6.0.3.1-p4.img --no-reboot
5.. Disconnect the tablet. Now you can boot into clockworkmod recovery, and use it to to root or to flash ROMs. I successfully flashed Lollipop AOSP ROM from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...android-5-0-0-lollipop-lrx21m-p4wifi-t2938870, even though it said it requires TWRP. I suspect TWRP can be flashed as well - I just went with cwmod because it was easiest to find based on other online Linux instructions.

[Q] HELP! odin message box

I just started with odin to root for my first time, and droidstyle's guide says that "box in left hand corner of odin will say PASS". Which left hand corner? The bottom left with the box titled Message? All that box is telling me right after I pressed Start is <OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 0). Is this the equivalent of PASS, or do I need to try pressing Start again?
nevermind
just watched a video with some odin screen capture and can now see that odin never detected my device in the first place. not sure why, but at least now i know the issue. i am determined to make this work!
ETA: I now think I have an older version of Odin. What is the latest version that I should be using for windows 7? Mine says v1.3, but I just found v1.83. The link from droidstyles guide was for the older version.
i give up just for the night. I will come back to it some time tomorrow. For whatever reason, Odin is not finding my phone when I connect it and put it in download mode. I have the newer v1.83 now and that didn't change anything. is my pc somehow blocking it, maybe? idk.
ETA: another thought, could it be my usb cable? I no longer have a functional stock usb cable, I have replaced it with a belkin miniusb data/charger cable, which has worked fine for data and transferring files and such, until now. could that be it?
Sounds like you either do not have your phone in download mode or you don't have the proper Samsung drivers installed on your computer. Download mode should have the triangle.

download mode
I do have the triangle, that is not the problem. The problem is that Odin does not recognize that my phone is plugged in. My pc makes the audible noise that something has been plugged in, but from Odin I get nothing. I see on the videos I watched that the box in the upper left in Odin should turn yellow, but mine does not.
Sounds like it is either a driver issue or a non OEM cable issue. First uninstall and reinstall all Samsung drivers, if that doesn't fix it order a new cable from Samsung.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using xda premium
I reinstalled the usb driver and that allowed odin to find my device, but then after selecting my rom and pit files and pressing start a couple of windows popped up that just had the file directory for odin next to a caution type symbol with 'ok' the only option available to click, then after doing that in the two unexpected windows odin now displays

is is not doing anything, my phone is still in download mode, and the start and reset buttons on odin are greyed out. what happened? do I have a bad version of odin? I am using v1.83. Did it do anything to my phone yet, is it in limbo, can I unplug my phone, should I start over? HELP!
ETA: I unplugged phone, closed odin, dowloaded it again from a different source, started over, now seems to be working fine. whatever. appears to be identical to the one I was just using.
Odin 1.3 is the version we all use for this phone. 1.8x might work but I haven't tried it.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using xda premium
It worked just fine. I watched some videos of others showing how to root and they all were using v1.8x, but I don't think Odin was my problem from the get go, it was my drivers.
I figured it was a driver issue.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using Tapatalk
Odin can be a pain in the ass. Glad you got it working.
If you want to remove one more variable for the future you can get a usb cable +charger for $2.50 shipped. I have ended up buying so many of these it's almost dumb since I always manage to lose them.

[Q] Phone stuck on...

Hey everyone, so I've been using a Cyanogenmod S2 for the past few months and everything was great.
Until recently it started to reboot by itself,
until one day when I woke up "Kernel panic upload mode" was on the screen.
I rebooted the phone,
and then was greeted with a black screen after the Samsung Galaxy S2 screen.
The buttons do light up, but nothing else could be done.
I entered download mode to flash a new firmware,
but then somehow it failed and then it says connect to computer to redownload firmware or something when I boot it on right now.
I can't get it to flash anything at all, whenever I use odin it gets stuck at setup connection,
I installed Kies but it doesn't recognize my phone as well, neither does my computer....
Need help. Desperately. :crying::crying::crying:

There's been many threads re: this issue on here over the past week listing the troubleshooting steps to go thru when Odin won't work, search for those threads (Immortalneo has listed them, go through his posts as a shortcut).
Edit - Hang on a minute, what model number do you have; what's the sticker on the phone chassis under the battery say ?

I'm using a GT-i19100
I'm going through immortalneo's posts but so far nothing's up..
Am currently following this guide but to no avail, (no .pit file in the compressed .rar file) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40154030&highlight=+pit#post40154030
Edit: I think it's a GT-i19100G because I vaguely remember such a thing on the startup screen...
If you've got an I9100, why are you trying to flash firmware for T-989 ?? I suggest you go back to Samfirmware & get an I9100 stock rom for starters.
Ignore that guide; your phone isn't bricked. However, it may well be if you try & flash a PIT file (Although, if you've somehow flashed firmware for a different model including PIT, you may need to at some point. Just not yet). OK. This is the first & last time I'm posting this stuff for the next month:-
Stuff to try when Odin doesn't work
-----------------------------------
*Must run Odin as administrator in Windoze.
*Ensure Kies & all it's processes aren't running in Windoze task manager. Kill them if they are (choose 'kill process tree').
*Try different USB ports; you must be using a 'powered' or mainboard port.
*Try different USB cables (particularly the cable that came with the phone if you're not using it now)
*Try different versions of Odin (search on here/Google)
*Uninstall Kies, reboot, redownload & reinstall it, reboot, try the flash again.
*Check the rom/kernel you download for corruption. Programs like 7Zip, IZarc, WinRar, etc will allow you to 'test' the rom file you download. If there are any errors/any of the files fail the test, bad download. Try again/try downloading with a different internet connection if it keeps happening.
*Run Windoze Update.
*And if all this fails, try a different PC. And if it won't work first time on another PC, go thru the above steps on that PC.
Hello everyone ..
It could solve the problem? I am in a very similar, and have helped me a lot, but none of the options so far have been effective. I'm starting to resign myself to use it as a paperweight, but still have not lost hope.:crying:

Stop Now :0 ! You are trying to install a T-Mobile T989 firmware.It's a Galaxy s2 too,but from T-Mobile.It's not the same.Search on Sammobile for an I9100 firmware,preferable Android 4.0.3 or 4.0.4.Of course it gives an error,because it's not the right firmware.

[Solution] For Soft-bricked Devices - Verizon (PC/Mac)

Bricked Phone?
This is a solution I found to work on my own GS4. The Verizon Update Utility seems to be able to restore a phone without any problems. However, if you are in a Soft-brick situation all of your data will most likely be erased (which is why we are told to backup so much). I looked all over the place for the Upgrade Assistant online since you can't access it from your phone if it's bricked, so I figured I could post it here and hopefully help someone out who has a bricked phone.
Instructions:
Install the Upgrade Assistant and SAMSUNG USB Drivers
Put your phone in Download mode
Connect to your computer (allow driver detect on Windows)
Open the Upgrade Assistant
Go to Repair Assistant
Press Start
Wait: the Process should take anywhere from 30-90 minutes (because it downloads the Stock 1.6ish gb rom)
In the Zip file you will find:
The Verizon Upgrade Assistant (PC/MAC)
Samsung USB Drivers
These files come directly from the stock ROM on the GS4
Hope it helps!
EDIT: The Mac Software installs great, however the Windows software doesn't seem to be working for me. So if you can get it to work thats awesome!
Please note: this is not my software and is only the software of it's respective owner. I do not claim for it to be mine, I am only posting a link so as it can be used to help.
Keep in mind that if youre on MDK this will probably up you to ME7... and lock your Booyloader.
If on MDK and you brick your device, I would ask around for assistance to manually unbrick

yes i see what u meant, but all the link are not available/downloadable
that's why i had to ask u, i think this is my first time to ever ask something in any forum hehe, i've never been this stuck in my life xD
but sadly I've lost all my chakara xD
anyway it seems that even if i did find it i won't be able to install it, the reason why is like below
1- i remembered i had a note 3 verizon, i attached it, copied the vzw software assistance.exe and all files related
2- tried to install it from my local harddrive copy, nothing would lunch or pop-up
3- backed it up as *iso and mounted it, still got nothing lunching or popping up when i try to open the *exe
4- connected my note 3 and lunched it from the phone and it directly pop up an agreement message with "install" button,
one must be connected to the internet when installing
so after all it turns out without a verizon device connected and used to install it, one cant use the software unless it's already installed
so i thought i'd share this info for anyone who wants
anyway thank you for your time and help =D
unbricking my note 2 sch-i605 ongoing.. xD
wish me luck =d
i'll post this just for information
so after i have soft bricked my phone to a brick that cannot be fixed through odin i managed to fix it with the verizon software repair
the error i have faced was that everytime i try to flash any rom or anything to sch-i605 verizon note 2 phone it will return an erorr messag sayong

tip: u have to install "Verizon software assistant" from a working Verizon phone only, you can't install it from copied files.
Thanks for all you provide XDA Dev's !!!
The software might be too outdated, I can't get it to run. It keeps force closing on my mac. It won't even launch in windows, I found a report of a user that had removed the samsung signature on the file with launching success, but even that didn't work for me. Lol I'm just going to have to wait for the stock rom to download so I can Odin it
Same situation here - I am stuck with the phone telling me to run Verizon Software Repair Assistant. and that does not work on Windows 10. I was able to remove the digirtal signature. I have the task manager running and the app does appear to launch but gets closes right away. Stuck phone - please help....
Just an update for those who care. I had success with windows 10. I plugged in a working verizon phone to get the upgrade assistant which has the repair assistant in it. It installed without a hitch. It wouldn't recognise my phone until I manually put it in download mode. Took about 7 mins to repair with fiber internet.
Sorry folk, can't install software.
Any help?
Running Windows 7 x64, drivers installed.

[Q] Help, Sprint Samsung S2 failed Jellybean update, at wit's end

I have a US SPH-D710 Sprint Samsung S2.that was working OK on ICS 4.0.4. I decided to upgrade to JB via Kies, following the procedure discussed at the official Samsung page on us on support at SupportOwnersFAQPopup.do?faq_id=FAQ00052384&fm_seq=60310 (sorry, I cannot post links)
I had to install Kies, which was not previously installed. It installed OK. Everything started out well and the phone went to 98% or 99% and then the flash failed. Power cycling, the phone came up with a complaint
Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again.
I did recovery mode, to the same effect. I then tried the Simple Upgrade tool, to the same effect. It always got to about 98% or 99% and then failed, giving no information, just a failure..
I uninstalled my anti-virus completely (as it was old anyway and it's time to buy a new license) and tried again. Same thing. The simple downloader fails with "Error Occurred! Cancel Download!!"
Then, I went to QBKing and followed a link from qbking77's web page at how-to-root/root-the-samsung-epic-4g-touch/ to a thread at sxtpdevelopers where I downloaded SPH-D710_GB27_1014481_Rooted_Restore.exe and it fails without giving any reason at "hidden"

No complaint at all, just the above. I have tried multiple times with different USB ports and different USB cables. I have successfully flashed/rooted/Odin'd other Samsung phones from this PC before. It's 64-bit Win7. This specific phone has never previously been rooted or flashed. It was on FL24.
The phone goes into download mode just fine, but is otherwise useless. In download mode, the phone says:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: SPH-D710
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: NO
CURRENT BINARY: SAMSUNG OFFICIAL
What can I do to bring this phone back to life?
I got it working
I went into my office and, using a computer appropriate for this use there, followed exactly the same steps with the same file, for the simple download tool this time, and using a third micro-USB cable, and it worked on the first try. Go figure. This was after trying various different things for about six hours at home, on my Win7 laptop that has worked many times before for other Samsung phones (an Epic 4G and an S4).

I think that the problem was that you didn't installed the correct drivers on your windows 7 laptop :fingers-crossed:

Definitely could have been any of those. I was just confused as I'd successfully used Odin on that laptop with several other Samsung phones, both newer and older than the S2. And also because it always got to 98% or 99% before it failed. I think this tells me I need another Win 7 box at home, for troubleshooting this kind of problem.

I didn't realize that the Sprint version of this phone was so different from the non-Sprint version (nor that this forum was for the non-Sprint version). I found the forum you referenced, and will direct all future questions for this phone over there. Thanks for the pointer.
Ok,I think theres maybe 20 odd different ones.Someone could think youve a standard s2 and give wrong info based on that.

Unable to Unbrick S5830i through Onid

Hi,
I've somehow managed to brick my rooted S5830i while flashing a ROM onto it. I basically now want to get the phone back to the state it was in before attempting to flash it as I performed a backup beforehand.
I can't boot it into recovery, but I can into Download mode. I've been trying to use Odin3 v1.84 & 1.85 with a simple file installation, but when it does actually recognize the phone via the USB port (which is very temperamental) the installation gets stuck on "<ID:0/15> setupConnection". I've left it for 10+minutes without any luck.
Does anyone has any ideas where I can go from here? I've searched through this forum and others ones, but I can't find anyone else who's had this exact same issue.
I have to admit I am fairly new to all this, but surely if I can somehow get into recoverymode, where I have ClockworkMod installed, I can then easily perform a restore of my previous settings which i backed up on the SD card before I flashed the phone?
Any help would be great!
Cheers.

Hi,
I've somehow managed to brick my rooted S5830i while flashing a ROM onto it.

Have you checked your usb drivers which must be properly installed?
because if they are not properly installed then these connection problems occur.
so reinstall usb drivers then perform.

Thanks for your reply Hitesh,
I've re-installed the USB drivers and it does seem more stable now. I'm still however getting the following outcome, any ideas?
"<osm> Enter CS for MD5..
<osm> Check MD5.. Do not unplug the cable..
<osm> Please wait..
<osm> S5830iXXMD1_S5830iBTUMD1_S5830iXXMD1_HOME.tar.md5 is valid.
<osm> Checking MD5 finished Sucessfully..
<osm> Leave CS..
<id:0 015=""> Odin v.3 engine (ID:15)..
<id:0 015=""> File analysis..
<id:0 015=""> SetupConnection.."
Regards

Thanks for quick response and that's a relief :victory:
Hi,
Loaded Samsung drivers from this link:-
http://http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11633550
Which I got from this tutorial on how to unbrick my Ace which is stuck on Samsung logo screen:-
http://http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840645
Installed drivers on Windows 8, rebooted, put Ace into Odin link ready for download, connected via usb, PC reported error USB device not recognised, tried three different USB ports on PC, shows as unknown device.
Checked via control panel, Samsung drivers were installed.
Any ideas how I can sort out Samsung drivers on a Windows 8 PC
Finally got PC to recognise my ACEi which it recognised as a modem, which was good enough to let me follow the unbrick tutorial above and all worked, now have my ACEi working again.
Only real change I made was to use a different phone to USB cable
One unexpected big plus was that as well as getting the phone usable (would boot) it also restored my lost IMEI number so I can make calls etc. :victory: the IEMI number must have been on the phone somewhere as I have checked it and it is the one the phone came with.
I lost my IMEI number when I loaded the Jellyblast ROM and I did not do a backup first
I now have a fully working phone but want to load a different ROM.
Having learnt a lesson I have done a backup using CWM.
I want to protect my IEMI which I thought you could do by making a copy of the efs folder, however when I look in the efs folder it is empty!
Any idea on why my efs folder may be empty and how I can protect myself by making a backup of my IEMI that can be restored if it gets lost again after loading a new ROM?

I've tried again with different firmware and this time using the multi file option without a PIT file... this has now worked and the phone is operational again!!
Thanks for your help Hitesth
