[Q] Stock KI8 - Can flash any Custom Rom - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As there are not much KI8 based custom roms I like to flash one based on KI3. But at present I am on KI8 stock. Will is it ok to flash KI3 based on top of stock KI8 or do I have to revert back to stock KI3 first and than flash the custom KI3.
Please clarify.

you can flash from ki8 down to ki3...just make sure you do a clean wipe on everything...and just back up your rom just incase anything goes wrong

No KI8 custom roms ???? You are misguided mi sold or misinformed .
I see 4 KI8 custom roms on the first page .

i think what he was trying to say not as much variety as ki3 ones

Mate...give it a couple of days and there will be heaps of roms updated to KI8.
What to you want? Rom or theme?
Patience. Won't be long.

Latest Stock ROM to flash via CWM

Hi,
Can anyone point me to a (direct) link that gives the latest stock ROM for Samsung Galaxy S2 that i can flash using CWM? I think the latest version is KG5, but please tell me if this is wrong?
Ive been trying to search through an ocean of links and can find thousands but dont which is the right one.
I just want the latest stock ROM (preferably with a rooted kernal, but can live without) that i can flash from CWM.
Im sure its probably already here somewhere, but its not so obvious to a noob like me.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Many thanks
Stock roms are ODIN flashed .

I guess that explains it!
Thanks for the quick reply.
If i need to re-route after i flash, can i use any kernal or does it have to be the one that matches the ROM?

Great, all done! Flashed using ODIN and re rooted using matching kernal (i found one so just took a punt on it)
If i want to flash something like Litening Rom in future can i do that using CWM or ROM Mgr? Im sticking with stock for now but who knows, i may get more adventurous!

[Q] Flashing over to a different kernel?

Hey all,
I've been doing a bunch of stuff with motorola, and samsung is just confusing me... My sg2 is running the I9100XWke7 insecure kernel. The baseband is ke1 though...
I was wanting to throw the SensatioN ROM by Crysis21 on it, but I noticed that it's based on the kg6/ with the kh3 modem...
What would I have to do to be able to flash this rom, and is it safe to flash a different kernel such as going from the ke7 to kg6?
I've done some searching around the forum, but my internet connection is really crappy, so I apologize in advance if there is already another thread about this.
Thanks all!
Generally you can upgrade a kernel
Likewise a modem.
Likewise a full firmware .
Could you have a KG4 firmware and change its KG4 modem to KH3 yes no problem.
Could you have a KG4 firmware and flash a KH3 Kernel probably .
Personally i flash the same firmware that the custom rom is based on first.
KG6 based rom and i flash full KG6 firmware .
Then flash custom rom .
jje
Just flash the rom, i think your getting confused with rom/kernel differences.
If you wish to use a custom rom and its an odin .tar file, you just flash that and dont worry about kernels.
If you wish to install a different kernel like ninphetamine or speedmod etc - then you can do this after you have flashed the custom rom of your choice.
HOWEVER, If the rom is a .zip based installation, you will need a kernel that includes CWM such as cf-root, ninphetamine etc before flashing the rom you have chosen.

Any kernel any custom rom .
Follow the custom rom instructions .

ok thanks for the quick response,, but what is the different with KF3 and KH3 that all roms seems to be? regards
KH3 is later than KF3.
No changelog .

nope. again, think about it...what makes you think you have some kind of specific firmware?
KI8 is the latest - 2.3.5 - can be found on this forum with full instructions how to flash
it doesnt matter what you are on. just flash the firmware
Thanks a lot
So if I flash a ROM with kI8 it will automatically put me on that ?

nope, your phone will turn into a microwave
Are you asking these questions for real? or is this a joke thread?
Unfortunatly for real. Just wasn't 100% on if it put me on the firmware or I had to use/install the listed firmware. I come from htc and its not the same
Thanks again

i was confused about this too coming from a non samsung phone.
i believe what you would do (if you want KI8) is flash the stock KI8 kernel, then flash the cf-root for KI8.
after that you can go ahead and flash any roms built off of that kernel, or any other roms but if they use a different kernel you will no longer be on ki8

lol now i'm confused, can you just go ahead and flash a ROM with KI8 (from stock whatever firmware) and you'll be good? or was that not sarcastic, and you will brick it?

no, flash the full firmware which has the stock kernel included...you can then flash whatever kernel over the top if you wanted to

not correct at all. flashing a new kernel changes the kernel, not the firmware

KI8 IS the stock firmware. it has the KI8 android 2.3.5 OS, the stock KI8 kernel and the relevant modem
This is making my head hurt....
Ok, so if you are currently on (eg) kh3 firmware, which is the third release from august and you want to update to KI8:
Go to intratechs thread, download the KI8 firmware and flash it through Odin
You will now have the FULL KI8 firmware, KI8 Kernel and modem....all stock
At this point you can flash cf root kernel to root your phone, you may want to flash a different one, your choice. this does NOT mean you are not on KI8 anymore...you have to flash a new firmware (KI3 for example) for that to change
haha, sorry for giving you a headache. but i do appreciate the time you took to type it all out. thanks

[Q] Install stock ICS

How can I install the stock ICS update on the S2 without rooting? I know it is available as an OTA but I don't get it here in Malta. I tried to pass the phone over a proxy but it did not work.
Thanks!

Flashing via Odin does not require root.
Go to google and type Galaxy S2 stock roms. You will find a thread in xda or androidforums both are fine. You download them, in the both threads you will find detail instructions on how to flash it.
When you download a rom make sure it is the latest version [ for gb 3.7 I think ] and it should have a stock kernel.
If you want to stick to the stock kernel but you want to be rooted you flash CF root for your rom.
But flashing a custom rom makes absolutely no-sense whatsoever.
If you cant find a stable rom you can try GadgetCheck's Revolution rom.
It is really stable with no bugs, and the DarkKnight kernel is their project which is considered as the best GB kernel by me.
Good luck.As the guy mentioned, you flash custom roms with Odin, you dont need to be rooted.

Stock Roms .and csc

Or use CHECKFUS to download and flash via ODIN .
Kernel is part of the firmware and not a separate item .
You rarely flash a custom rom with ODIN .

That reply is both ignorant and stupid .
>>>and in the next sentence try Gadgets custom rom ???
