I have a rooted ATRIX. I am on Korea Telecom (In Korea) and there are no sbf backups available in the big thread.
However, I would like to try ROMing, but I'm afraid of toasting my Atrix with no way to get out. Therefore, I'd like to know a way to make a Complete backup of my phone so that I can recover when I inevitably screw up my phone with my endless tinkering.
Thanks for any help.
Do a backup in clockwork mod recovery or other custom recovery.
^ THAT.
boot into recovery>backup and restore>Backup>Choose where to backup>....done.
Wow. So easy. Thanks for the heads up guys. Just to make it clear, though. If I softbrick my phone, this backup will put me right back to where I was?
Yeah even if you somehow bork your recovery you can flash it back on with fastboot and restore that backup. It's stored on the sd so should be unaffected by anything you do really but keep a copy on a pc or w/e just in case.

Afternoon All,
I have just got myself a T-Mobile G2 Touch a.k.a htc Hero. After reading numerous pages about Android and custom ROMs (it's starting to become one big blur ), I'm eager to try this out (did a similar thing with previous phone on Vodafone to cure a GPS problem).
Before I do anything, I would like to clarify a couple of points. The first is about doing a Nandroid backup. What's the easiest way do do this? I assume the Nandroid backup creates a copy of the phone image on the SD card which can then be downloaded to the PC for safe keeping. How easy is it to restore a Nandroid backup?
If I try a custom ROM and decide I don't like it / it crashes etc, is it just a case of getting a new ROM (or my Nandroid backup) and uploading it to the phone?
My phone has the following:
Firmware Version 1.5 (Is this Android v1.5?)
Baseband Version 63.18.55.06FU_6.35.07.08
Kernel Version 2.6.27-0078c992
Build Number 2.73.110.26 CL#69351
Software Version 1.0.0.A6288
Finally, is it possible to completely brick the phone or are you usually able to recover it from the SD card and recovery console (home + power key / back + power key)? I thinking about possible corrupt ROMs / failed uploads.
Thanks,
Hi,
I am also quite new to the forum so dont just take my word for it but i recently rooted my phone.
So as for the nandroid backup if you use amon-ra recovery then making a back up is simple. All you do is when the phone is off click (home + power) then select make backup and click nand back up.
As to whether you can completely brick your phone, I am pretty sure the answer is yes. As to if you can recover from it, it depends how badly you messed up.
Heros are very hard to brick
Generally you can always recover.
The one big thing that is very hard to recover from is flashing the wrong sort of radio to the phone.
Always check that what your flashing is for either the GSM Hero or the CDMA (sprint) Hero
Restoring nandroid backups are simple and don't take but a few minutes.
Have the file on your sd card, select restore from your recovery menu and then your laughing.
This may be a newb-ish question, but I was wondering if it's possible and how to make a backup (including kernel) with odin. If not, how would one go about doing so? I have a very nice setup right now with a custom kernel and a heavily modified stock rom that I don't want to lose, but I also want to try out the voodoo lag fix with ext4.
EDIT: If this has been addressed somewhere else, please post a link for me. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Use ROMmanager is has option to backup ROM you can download from the market.
It save your backup image to your internal SD card.
It also comes with clockwork recovery.

My understanding is that rom manager does not backup the kernel. What I really want is a way to create a full backup of my entire phone, not just the rom and apps/settings/etc. It seems to me that odin should be capable of such functionality.
I heard once kernel is on it's on for good and independent of rom somehow.. so only way to get rid of kernel is by pushing it out with another- you should be fine with it, just back up your rom in clockwork

i missed that in your post but yea it doesnt back it up
This is great and all, but I really want a full system dump that I can flash back to my phone when those OH **** moments happen. Kernel and all. I just got odin working, and I really like the idea of being able to load up a full system backup and being back to where I am right now in a matter of minutes.

I don't know of anyway to do what you want to do. Best thing I could say is do a Nandroid back up, that would take care of everything but your kernal. If you screw something up just flash back to stock with odin, flash the rom you were using then restore with nandroid.
This is why questions get posted in the dev section. Devs (AKA the people who know this ****) don't read the q&a section.
Go post it in developer section just make note that you searched and tried asking in Q&A and got no answer.... so you dont get reamed

I can see asking just to have some learning experience with Odin but seriously dont see how backing up everything with Odin is any faster/better than nandroid.
For one restoring with Odin requires you to be hooked up to PC. Nandroid restore can be done from your phone with backup from internal SD card and it takes mins to restore. And you can store your favorite kernel .zip file on internal SD as well and takes like 5 secs to flash.
I rarely, if ever, find myself tinkering with roms and such unless I'm at my computer, and I do keep nandroid backups, but I like the idea of having a comprehensive backup that I can load up and flash quickly. I actually find flashing with odin to be substantially faster than nandroid.
I know we all get to messing around trying to add "cool new feature x" and next thing you know something is hosed. This, to me is why a custom odin backup would be ideal.
I think I will go ahead and ask in the dev section, but thank you guys for the suggestions. Like I said, any help is appreciated.
i have read some threads about the nandroid backup, even the stickies. but i'm still confused about it. so i just want to ask things about it.
if i want to flash from JI6 to another custom rom, they are saying that i should do a back up first, what will the back up do? save my applications, contacts? or will the back up get the phone to the JI6 when the phone get's bricked?
A backup basically is an image of your phone as it is when you perform the backup. It saves your apps, contacts, everything. It wont work all the time however, if you royally screw up a flash or something along those lines you will have to use Odin to reflash firmware and start from scratch. You will notice that in probably every kernel, rom and theme post they strongly urge you to make a backup in case something goes wrong.
what if i don't care about the applications, contacts and files inside the my phone. like it's ok for me to start from a stock vibrant. i don't have to do a backup? can i just flash the phone straight away?
You dont HAVE to do a back up but its highly recommended in case something you do goes wrong. If you dont care about loss of apps and stuff educate yourself on how to use Odin, its great. When I started getting into a flashing frenzy Odin has saved me countless times.
I know how to use the odin. what I don't know is if it's really a must to do a backup when flashing the phone.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
No, its not a requirement.
that's the one I wanted to know. thanks! I just hope my phone doesn't get bricked.

I did a nandroid backup of stock JI6 with OCLF and tried BionixFINAL_STOCK.zip. I wanted to go back to my JI6 but the restore didn’t work. I think there is a different in kernels. Is there anyway to do a backup of everything so that the nandroid restore would work? I can still go back to JI6 using Odin but prefer to do without a computer. Your help is greatly appreciated.
1. What is the difference between performing a nandroid backup after booting into recovery and doing one through Rom Manager?
2. Where are the backups saved and is there any chance of them being overwritten by flashing a rom?
No difference
In the clockwork folder, internal memory.
You will not lose this because the rom's do not wipe internal, just data (apps)
I need a bit of clarification. What exactly is a nandroid...if i assume that it is a complete back up of all data and apps, would i be correct? As you can see im a bit confused. I read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734475&page=2 (just in case i wanted to revert back to a stock rom for what ever reason) is the nandroid used once you flash back to stock using odin to get everything back to stock or can you us the nandroid to get back to stock?
Ive searched on here and cant really find a straight answer.
Thanks for the help!
Ok, so I readily admit that I'm the jackass the n00b video was aimed at. I thought I understood what I was doing, and clearly didn't. Now I can't get my phone to do ****.
I was attempting to flash the new CM9 beta. First time I've attempted to flash anything.
was on 2.3.5.
rooted using the 2.3.5 root method.
SBF-ed to 2.3.4. (prob didn't need to root on 2.3.5 if I was going to sbf to 2.3.4, but I'm an idiot)
SBF went fine. then I messed up good.
at the end of Moon Shadow's SBF tutorial he said he recommends the full factory reset, so I did it.
so now...I have no phone service. looking at settings/about phone it doesn't know my phone # and I have no idea how to fix this. not sure what other problems will present themselves after that, but that's the big issue. I'm connected to my home network, so at least I have some data connectivity.
before starting...
I made a backup with Clockwork Recovery, but that backup seems to be gone.
I made a backup with Go Backup, and that seems to still be there, but it was a 2.3.5 backup...how can I get to that and will it fix my problem?
ideally right now I'd just like to go back to the Go Backup backup I made before starting any of this and then I can reconsider where to go next.
additionally, I thought about just going forward, but I cannot for the life of my figure out how to flash this CM9 ROM, despite having read the directions 15 times. I tried to use Clockwork to install it from SD, but when I try that I can't see the .zip, despite having copied it over.
Can anyone take pity on a n00blet, or point me to a thread with information on how to solve this (I searched and had trouble finding anything useful)?
Very appreciative of all help.

ok, noob found thread about activation and fixed that part.
now I'm hoping I can just go back to 2.3.5 and apply my backup.
Lol, first take a deep breath. Your phone is not hosed, it's actually working like it's supposed too.
After you sbf, you phone is back to it's factory state right? So remember when you got your phone for the first time you had to have it activated/programmed. If you're on Verizon then dial *228 and follow the directions, takes about 5 minutes. This will give you back service and your phone number.
Second, the droid x2 is unique and requires a few different steps than most phones to flash things because it has whats called a locked, encrypted bootloader. So with the X2 you will NEVER want to use Rom Manager (Clockwork Mod Recovery) or Rom Toolbox. They just do not work with our phone yet.
Your going to want to read this link: http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/droid-x2-support/41785-common-x2-questions-answers.html
It gives a good overview of how the X2 works and explains a lot of things.
Then go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1318083
This explains how to install and get into the X2's special Bootstrap Recovery. This is where you will make backups, restore backups, and flash new roms. The thread explains in great detail how to make and restore backups in Bootstrap Recovery.
oh man, thanks a bunch lead off.
that whole deal with the boot strap is something that I never saw in all the reading I did and probably solves a lot of my problems. I'll do what you said (starting with the deep breath) and begin again.
thanks again for the help.
Yea no problem
