ok i just got this hting less then a week ago, and 2 nights ago i was loading some game and the thing crashes. no big deal, boot right back up again. unlocked the screen, got to about the point where the sense weather displays and bam reboot. then even if i left it alone, it would constantly reboot. it got so bad to the point i couldnt even get it into h-boot. so i let the battery die, charged it up then booted it into h-boot and did a factory reset. reset worked fine, got 70% of the way through set-up then bam, boot loop
let the battery die again, factory reset it boot i into recoverymode, and was able to reboot and set it up. used it for about 10-20 mins, started syncing up accounts and stuff figuing whatever i did fixed it. bam, reboot. now im at square 1.
now im in my 14 days to exchange it but every damn store in boston is sold out, and since im an employee of at&t it get least priority to inventory(yes even though i am also a paiyng customer, seems kinda stupid but whatever). and i dont wanna deal with somerhing refurbed if i have to do a warranty swap...
so ANY ideas or help would be great.

When you wiped and restarted, did the device begin to restore your installed apps? I would try a wipe without the device restore, just start it clean.

I'm with ya. Mine was solid for the first couple of weeks. Now its just a bootloop. Oddly, it was fine while I was on a flight today. Maybe something to do with the radio??
---------- Post added at 01:34 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:27 AM ----------
And FYI I'm on the horn with HTC who says its a problem with the SIM. I took it out and its working just fine on wifi. Of course they have no resolution and offering to do nothing for me, other than "they're looking into it". It did stop the reboots for me though.
Same problem
I have had the same problem. Taking out the sim worked for a day but now it still reboots. Doing a clean factory reset doesn't work. It will re-boot over and over until it runs the battery out.
HTC said they are looking into it. WTF.
I use mine for wifi only, no SIM...I've been stuck in the boot-loop of death 3 times and the only thing I can do is let it run till dead. Really lame...and I was outside my 14 days.
Best build quality of any tablet I've owned (just about all of them) but it really has quite some bugs.
Thought I would share since I feel the HTC rep is full of BS with the SIM solution.

I agree with what you've said and feel that if we can't get some root access and start cleaning this thing up it will not live up to expectations... I'm finding less and less reasons to use it each day.
By the way. back on topic. I've gotten a reboot 4 times today while trying to get the gps to hook up and navigate. and it never has connected!
FYI: They're saying it's location-based now. HTC made me give them all the addresses I was at while it had been rebooting. It's happened to me in Chicago, where I live, and DC over the weekend.
I got this thing for remote administration. It's worthless to me without a SIM card.
AT&T is sending me a free one though. Guess I'll see if it happens on that one.

I just landed in McLean and my device is rebooting like mad unless it's in airplane mode!!!
I've disconnected all mobile data and am connected with wifi only and so far no reboots... Will keep you informed but suggest you attempt same. 2:15pm Still no reboot!! 3:45 turned off airplane mode... rebooted twice already.
10:57pm. No reboots once I got out of DC/McLean area and into Baltimore. Back in Texas now and no reboots since landing and corrected to 4g
My reboot problem solved with workaround - boot in portrait mode
I had what may be a different issue than described in other entries on this thread, but here's my story:
1. Rebooted the device manually (to clear app memory)
2. Touched screen to log in
3. As soon as circle dragged to middle of screen, device reboots
(repeated this many times in frustration, then)
4. pulled SIM Card and microSD card, same issue
5. Put device in portrait mode (HTC logo on right, charger on left)
6. touched screen to log in
7. get to password entry screen.
8. enter password, I'm in!
9. Insert SIM, manually rebooted, log in with Portrait mode, works
10 Insert SD card, manually rebooted, logged in with Portrait mode, works.
11. Manually rebooted, logged in with landscape mode (HTC logo on top, charger on bottom), got instant reboot. Pulled SIM/SD, same thing.
I don't know if it was a bug in the password protection screen or what, but I disabled my password at login and now I only orient it in portrait mode when I boot. Have not had the problem since. Oh and mine is not location-based - It worked forever in Seattle until it stopped working, and also worked in Paris, France until it stopped working. Same location each time - same room even. only change was orientation of the screen for me.
I think all the reboot issues are related to AT&T Sim cards and AT&T apps
Because I unlocked my own and uesing another sim card and I didn't face any rebooting issue

It is entirely location based. Last week I was in McLean VA. My device was in constant reboot. When I left and was closer to Baltimore it was fine. In Austin over the weekend... No problem. This week in Nashville... No reboots at all. I'll be in DC next week and am sure it will reboot.

I have the same problem !! I return it and I bought other one "Unlocked" I thought that will work, but,, still with same problem
i will change the SIM card from at&t to t-mobile hopefully the problem will not occur.
The ones not having or the reboots stopping, are you in a LTE market? Plus you could be a “soft” LTE market. ATT Intruder, Austin is not listed as a LTE market, but does your JS indicate LTE on the taskbar? San Antonio had LTE On since Feb/March. The people having the reboots, might be in markets where they are “lighting up” LTE in beta and those APNs/PSIDs might not be load in those new LTE SIMs cards.
Or, I could’ve been out of the cellular world too long…

I have been running custom roms on my droid since the root explot was first discovered, and I have a rooted xoom as well. Last night I rooted my thunderbolt and installed the debloated rom. I don't think it is even related to my problem, as it still worked fine after doing this, but I thought it was worth mentioning. I removed the sim card today, just to prove to my brother that it did indeed have a sim, and after reinsertation, my thunderbolt has not been able to connect to a data network. I do not live in a 4g area, and I have tried reseating the sim several times. I can make phone calls, wifi works fine, but I cannot get the 3g icon, and the browser won't load if not on wifi.. I'm starting to get scared. I can't think of anything else to try. Any suggestions?
EDIT 1: I have intermittent 1x data, but I never get 3g. And when I say intermittent, I mean I get it like right after a call for maybe a minute, then it goes away.

I had this same issue as well when I removed and reinserted my SIM card. When I booted back up I was stuck on 1xRTT. After making a call, they phone locked back on to LTE and everything was good after that. If it still isn't working I would recommend giving Verizon a call. They may be able to reactivate it. I did notice that the problem persisted even though I flashed a couple different roms on the device. I'm thinking it probably isn't a great idea to remove and insert the SIM if you don't have to.
Just an update,
I spent 2.5 hours at the effing verizon store today after spending an hour on the phone. Even after all that time, and giving me a new SIM, they STILL couldn't get my TB to connect to 3g. They said that it might magically start working at midnight for no particular reason, but had no clue what to do (I was actually at a corporate store btw) If it doesnt start working tonight, I am going back tomorrow. I have no idea what the hell is up. I am very tech savvy, and this is just insane. It must be a verizon problem in my area that it wont let the phone reactivate for the 3g/4g
Rebooted my TBolt and when it started up it popped a big lock screen message about the SIM card not being recognized. Phone booted up rest of the way anyways, but kept popping that warning occasionally.
Rebooted again and it seems to have gone away.
Just curious if this is just a fluke or the sign of something worse to come.
Any one else seen this behavior?
Keep in mind, this is a VZW 4G sim that they installed 10 weeks ago and never had any problems with...no attempt to do anything like use some 3G AT&T SIM, etc, etc.
I noticed this behavior for the first time today, right after I rebooted as well. I immediately tried calling my Google Voice number (didn't want to try calling a friend) and it went through, so I'm not sure if the error message is valid or not.
considering this phone has some of the same insides as the hd7, that does not suprise me.
I get the error occasionally of no sim on my hd7 and reboot always makes it go away. Happened maybe 4-5 times since November.
Thanks for the replies. Only three one time so far, so probably nothing to worry about based on both your experiences.

Have you reactivated a 3g phone on your account? This voids the 4g sim.
THUNDERBOLT
Had my note for a week and it would never work right on any AT&T hotspots. It would connect but I would get a notification that the connection failed, basically it seems that the authentication failed as I would get no data despite still showing connected in wifi connections. They gave me a new sim along with about 2 hours of wasted time doing other crap. They eventually put my sim in another handset and it worked. Come to find out that 4 other people have had the same problem in the past couple weeks with their Note. One of which was there at same time and his started working about ten minutes after a sim swap. The other two both got new phones like I did. Something you guys may want to check out, especially if within the 30 days. I spent the past week skimming through and installing apps suggested apps, time to start over.

First, thansk for the thank anyways!
Second, No I did need a new phone. They swapped my SIM with no change. The one guy got a sim swap and it worked for him. Took awhole new phone for me. But I'm big on getting what I pay for. They used the free wifi as a selling point. I will very rarely use it, but first night there I was at McDs and got a connection failed notice. If i'm paying for it, it'll work one way or the other, especially now that I dont have unlimited data.
Just because it connects to a wifi spot doesn't mean you get internet right away. You still need to open up a browser and confirm to their terms and conditions before the internet works.
Yea I know, it wouldnt do that though. The browser tried to connect and got nowhere. The key to the authentication fail is that network connections showed it connected but the ATT notification said connection failed. This is the safeguard that keeps all but ATT devices off the network, a function of a implicit deny rule.
This is prob meant for another thread but they really need to make those ATT Hotspots recognize that you're on an ATT phone and auto connect without having to hit accept on the Terms and Conditions. I have times when my mother and aunt are at a Starbucks and they'd call me saying they're on the wifi but it's not working. I gotta keep telling them to open up a browser and hit accept on the terms and conditions.
BTW, does anyone know if you nuke/freeze the AT&T Hotspots app, does this prevent you from using ATT Free wifi?

I've never had to accept any Terms and Conditions on an AT&T device at an AT&T hotspot. If I go to Starbucks, the phone connects without any prompting and gains access, a little AT&T hotspot indicator appears in the notification bar. If I try to connect with my laptop or a non-AT&T phone, I have to accept Terms and Conditions.
I also had to exchange my Note this week, after about 10 days of use. The phone was in the car holder and it rebooted. It then started boot looping where it would display the Samsung splash logo, and then reboot. It would not go into Recovery, though would go into Download mode. AT&T tried to reset it for 20 minutes and then gave up and gave me a new phone.
I pre-ordered this phone and received it on 5/24 - I've been using it around the house on Wi-Fi to check email/internet, etc but waited until last night to activate the phone.
Now, I'm having issues with the phone randomly freezing and rebooting. I've done numerous PRL updates, I'm going to try a hard reset now too.
What's interesting is that this happened ONLY after I put the phone on the Sprint network. The phone has been in use since I got it on 5/24 and I never experienced this issue. In fact the problem started as I was trying to activate the phone. The phone froze while trying to use the "Activate this device" feature in settings. I had to turn around and go online to activate it.
This sounds like a network/software issue - why would this problem surface immediately after activating the phone???? Grrrr Sprint.
I had problems using the activate this device in settings as well. It would not activate and kept retrying to activate every minute or so. I ended up calling Sprint and they had me do a PRL update. I can't remember though if they did anything on their end. In the end it worked after the update. Maybe give them a call.

I was able to activate phone on Sprint.com.
Did or do you have issues with the phone freezing after activating it?
if you're gonna hard reset your phone, I'm pretty sure you need to wipe data for Google wallet first. Good luck. Sorry about reboots. Never had one on this device.

I had small problems activating also so I had to call sprint. They had me go to settings>system updates>update profile and then everything was fine. You might want to try that too.

You could see if calling Sprint and having them re-provision the phone.. not sure if it will do anything but it doesn't hurt and takes a few minutes
Thanks for the suggestions guys - ultimately I decided to exchange the phone.
I pre-ordered the original phone and you know the first batch are always a little buggy. I was able to duplicate the problem immediately at the Sprint store just by turning on 3G, lol. It froze and went into its reboot cycle.
So far the replacement seems ok.......
Has anyone else said any trouble with the GPS? It seems that I have to restart my phone in order for it to work a lot of times. It will not pick up any satellites (GPS Status, for example, will show 0 out of 0,) and then once I restart the phone, it will work like normal. What can I do to make this work right without restarting? I have yet to root the phone. I am on the Sprint version.

You could probably try safemode / factory reset and see how the phone works.
I would suggest to go to Sprint and exchange the phone if it persists.

Also you want to calibrate your Compass. Or you will spin around and around if it does work after a reset. I tried using maps prior and the locks were roaming because of the missed calibration.

I finally made it to a tech store. I hate dealing with Sprint Customer Service. Before I went there, I did a hard reset, waited it out a week, used it without my case for a few days, did GPSCLRX, used GPS Status, all the combinations of location and sprint/qualcomm "optimizations" and still had the issue.
When I took it to the store, the guy was trying to do everything in his power to give the phone back. He was checking stuff that had no bearing on anything, like adding the gps button to quicksettings, and adding my city to the world clock list. "Well it's working now, so you should be good." Of course it's working. I told you five times that GPS is ok when the phone is restarted, but gets 0/0 sats a few hours later. "It's the magnet on the case" I tried it for a couple of days without the case, next. "What is that program you showed me with the satellites, it's probably intefering." Take it off. Hard reset the phone again, just don't erase my SD card (with that level of incompetence, I should have brought it to them freshly reset without the card.) After a few more guesses, he finally gave it to the repair person. I had brought my other phone so they could activate it so I could take care of other business and come back, but the guy kept on doing other stuff. I was ready to go full retard on him, but the repair person came out, took me outside with the phone, told me he concluded that even the gps radio at that point in time was not behaving correctly, and that his htc one max had the same issue before he traded it in for a note 3. I get to pick up a new max on Wednesday. Hopefully this one will be ok.
Cool, can't you guys contact htc service directly? But I would love a new proper phone instead of repaired one, which might develop other problems later.

HTC usually only does that if you buy it directly from them. As long as the phone is in the same or better condition than what I brought in (with the problems fixed, and rootable,) I'm good.
The new phone gets a nice GPS lock in my apartment. That hardly happened with any phone. If only it would pick up the LTE better, but I have to fault Sprint and my apartment, not HTC on that one.

Good to hear rock on!
Another twist
I have the Verizon flavor HTC One Max. Since day one, I have not been able to get decent GPS signal. Verizon has replaced my phone twice in less than a month. First one replaced the first day because the 3G radio didn't work. Second replaced because the GPS took forever to connect regardless of location or conditions. The third phone has the same GPS issue as the first two. No matter where I am, no matter how clear the skies with direct line of site, the phone cannot find a satellite to lock on. After a lot of research, I used the GPS Status app and used the Manage A-GPS State in tools to reset and then download GPS assistance data from the Internet. Nice try, but it did not make any difference. So on to the second set - I uninstalled Google Maps updates and then disabled it. (My phone is stock so I cannot uninstall it.) Suddenly, I CAN get GPS signal. In a couple minutes of turning on GPS, my phone finds satellites and knows where it is in the world. So for me, Google Maps had a conflict with HTC One Max's GPS ability. I don't know why, but this resolved the issue for me. Now if I could only have both Google Maps AND GPS. Suggestions welcome!
Update: Removing Google Maps worked for about 4 days, then I could no longer get GPS signal anywhere, anytime. Not sure what to do next. HTC is willing to attempt a repair, but they won't give me a loaner while they work on my phone. Not sure what I am going to do, but suggestions or advice are certainly welcome.
Update 2: April 7th I got the Android 4.4.2 update, and now the GPS works like it should. I can use Google maps with no problem - it also got an update that evening, which may or may not have helped resolve the issue/conflict. But now the phone GPS works and I no longer have a problem.
