I just love my Dell Venue! - Dell Venue

I removed all crapware so it's all tweaked up. I'm using it on netflix and the frame rate and picture quality is awesome!

How is the battery life? Can you post a guide or step-by-step for newbies? Considering purchasing this phone (second hand) but getting feedback that phone is slow and issues with camera, freezing, etc. If those can be resolved by removing and optimizing software, it would be nice to know how. Thanks.

Well - if it wasn't lonely enough being a Dell Streak owner I just ordered a Venue.
I kept looking for something smaller than my Streak for portability and from what I read the Venue is a smaller version of the Streak.
Looking forward to getting the Venue.

The Venue's basically a Streak 4.1+AMOLED, but without a FFC.
Though if your next phone must be a dell and could wait a couple months and dont care about the price, the Streak Pro is 4.3 SAMOLED/3rd gen snap.
But you could prob buy 2 or 3 venues for the price of importing one

Turning on the FFC is just a way to scare myself.
And what I wanted was a smaller version of the Streak. I don't need the latest/greatest and the Streak has always worked great for me. I hope I get the same results from the Venue.

FFC is one of those things that's nice to have and either you use it all the time or never. I've never used the FFC on mine though
For a ~$200 phone it's pretty decent looking, but even though it's newer then the s5 GB is about as new as i'd reasonably expect for it. I would seriously doubt dell would be willing to work on getting ICS or anything newer then GB on it as even their roadmap from earlier this year stated support for it was for all of 3 months.
The venue's in a really weird spot being half a year newer, but with only 4 months of real support. Even though they still make new ones and still sell those on their website, also even though the S5 isnt being sold, it's still supported.

My Venue is sitting on a FedEx truck about 15 miles away waiting for delivery on Monday. Sometimes I think that tracking is torture .
Has anyone tried StreakMod recovery on the Venue?
Does the Venue have the install-recovery.sh file like the Streak?
I was wondering if flashing StreakMod Recovery, using that to flash superuser.zip and then letting it boot and have the install-recovery.sh put the stock recovery back would work for root. Thinking in text here.
I am off to download and browse through the one complete ROM that is on the wiki.

I've had someone test streakmod on it previously but it doesnt boot, they're similar but not so similar that they can boot eachother kernels.
It does have install-recovery.sh

Finally got the Venue in my hands this evening.
It has a solid build and the screen is gorgeous. Just getting everything set up before going to bed.
It came with:
Android version: 2.2
Kernal Version: 2.6.32.9-perf
OEM version: GTOUB1A30730
Build number: 13505
Build time of Tue Dec 21 21:44:59 CST 2010
According to the wiki that's the latest Dell ROM.
So far it seems a bit snappier than the Streak. I'll see how it is after a few days.

Either it's older stock or they still havnt bothered making any updates for the majority of the regions

First day of use today and I have to say that I am impressed. The screen is great in outdoor light, the GPS was quick to get a fix, and the sound output through a 3.5 mm aux. cable was better than my Streak (I use PowerAmp on both and the files are the same).

Well - I am waiting for a replacement Venue.
I was having issues with the compass - it would not calibrate. So I tried a number of power off/power on cycles, each time trying to calibrate the compass. When that did not work I powered the phone off and tried to boot to recovery to do a reset from there, but when I tried restarting the phone the capacitive lights came on and nothing else.
A bunch of battery pulls and attempted restarts did not work and then came the 75 minutes on the phone with Dell, 30 minutes the first time when the call hung up during a transfer and 45 minutes the second time during which I was out through a number of troubleshooting steps and finally told a new phone was being sent.
I still love the phone. This echos my experience with personal electronics. They tend to show up any faults shortly after purchase. My Streak has been great for 10 months and I am now back to using it.

[Q] Were Returns/Refurbs in the Big Woot Buy?

Got my Woot G Tab today. On opening the box, picking up the unit, I heard a loud click as if the case had just snapped shut. And it was on. Showing a pond with leaves falling through it and the occasional waterdrop. Actually very nice but is that the stock background? As an adroid noob, I dl'd the manual etc. and read them.
Mainly I tried to set up the wifi to get really going. Followed instructions and it said it recognized the network. Wifi on. However, the wifi symbol has a "!" in it and when I try to get the web is says network unavailable?
So I am stuck and wondering if I got a lemon. Or a hacked return. Or a permanently semi bricked refurb.
Appreciate some guidance. I don't want to send it back, I want it to work.
The background you got with the pond is the default on the shipped gtabs from the woot sell.. At least mine was that way. Its odd that it didn't offer the set up tutorial like if you do a fresh flash.
If you go to settings and click on the wireless settings you can access you wifi network and set up your pass code to connect to your wifi.
Woot Tabs
Looks like when the factory loaded the extra apps on there (Angry Birds, et al) they put it on the classic screen by default but there is no set up tutorial that runs on them.
Unless you see scratches/smudges on the one you got it is likely new.
You get it on the network?
yeah
just as the others said the falling leaf pond is the norm atleast for the wooters. did you try moving closer to the wifi router? my tablet doesnt seem to have great range and only barley picks up my singal where the same place my netbook has no problems.
Hi all. I just got a response from woot. I emailed them saying that my Gtab had a DLINK wifi profile set up out of the box. I told them I had thought I ordered a new unit. here was their response.
The item should have been new. We will have a replacement sent to you. Please use the return label below to send back the item that does not appear to be new.
Mine was new. But thats because I was too impatient to wait for mine to arrive and went a bought one at my loacal sears, then returned the new one woot sent.
It would certainly seem that a lot of these woot tabs are returned models, considering the amount of trouble some are having just getting them to boot after flashing a custom ROM that's been tried successfully by a few thousand people to date.
There is some qustionable stuff going on with some of the Woot orders. Some had different Wi-Fi APs in the list like Staples, etc. Many, like mine, had dead pixels.
The custom rom issues could be because of 10,000+ noobs
In all of the Woot has been quick to return.
My Woot special was pre-configured to associate with any SSID named DLINK and NETGEAR. I assume this is just typical? The second I associated with my own WPA2 AP, it downloaded an update.
I went ahead and flashed the VEGAn-Tab 1.0 Beta 5.5.1 firmware. Other than some Market issues (which I plan on addressing shortly), the thing screams and works flawlessly. Looks like a new unit to me, but could have been a barely used unit that was returned.
God knows I bought a very, physically defective one (misaligned microSD slot and other, physical defects) from Sears last year for $100 more. This one was in far, far more mint condition than that one, which was supposed to be new.
Absolutely no complaints here. The unit is solid, and the firmware goes on just fine. Followed instructions (although people newer to concepts of mounting/ejecting media and other "proper" usage might need substeps) and didn't have any issues with putting VEGAn-Tab on it.
I had the same screen. When I rebooted, I THEN got the setup. Weird. I played with the stock rom for a little bit, then I went ahead and loaded vegan. Waaaay faster. Amazon Appmarket is nice. Playing with Angry Birds Rio and Weatherbug Elite. Most importantly, this is a great tablet to surf the net on. I have no idea how a person could surf at an obtuse angle comfortably, so the viewing angle is basically a non-issue. Totally worth it for $285.
OTA bricked mine.
The one I got was in apparently brand new condition (at least cosmetically).
Booted but no tutorial offered. Hooked to WiFi and it downloaded the OTA update. I played with it for few minutes, tried to run AngryBirds but it did not run (nothing displayed), weird.
Then I let it apply OTA. It rebooted to recovery, flashed the update than rebooted again, got thorough initial 2 boot screens then black out (literally). I could force it reboot, but no luck. At this point it also did not show up as a USB storage drive (should it through recovery? normal boot was hang so I did not expect it).
So I could not force update through a USB but instead grabbed TnT Lite 4.4.0 and recovered from SDCard2 (externally plugged). Works fine now.
Possibly was messed up in factory.
When I got mine it booted strait to the launcher, which had the water and leaf background on it. It seems in brand new condition, everything was flawless. The screen had no fingerprints, the manual and all the other information was packaged as it should be, the screen protector was un-opened, and the cables were packaged as new. When I put it on my network it prompted for an update, at which time I Installed a different rom. I did not check the to see if it had any other wifi info saved before I blew it away. I have even opened it up, every screw was in place, no fingerprints were anywhere on the inside to be seen, and the screws had no sign of being marked up on the head. If it is a refurb or return they did an excellent job, but I highly doubt it is.

I would guess thats spot on.
Anyway, I have no doubt in my mind that my tablet was new.
My Experience Similar
My unit also started in classic. I manually set up WiFi without difficulty. Once connected it quickly went into the OTA update. When I rebooted it went into the new unit startup described in the Quick Start Guide. It certainly appears to be new, but it did raise the question.
It works great so far. I am trying to decide whether to root now or let it burn in for awhile in case of hardware issues.
Mine booted to the water launcher as well on first boot up, with Angry Birds, Color Note, etc on the home screen. Then I installed the OTA update and when I rebooted, that is when I got the setup wizard.
Since it seems this is pretty common across units, I would assume that it is not due to being a refurb, otherwise there would be differences. But, while these may not be refurbs, but they were definately taken out of the box and "setup" by someone.

This was also my experience as well. No fingerprints anywhere, box was shrink wrapped, cables were factory twist ties. I have no doubt that mine was new.
After the OTA update the preinstalled apps were gone, including the pond background, three short sample videos (king kong preview, indy cars, two animals), some sample songs including fur elise, also color note, angry birds and amazon market. There was also a dlink wifi setting that went missing after the update but still don't think it was a refurb. This thing is a fingerprint magnet, no way there wasn't even a partial on it or a speck of dust somewhere if it had been repackaged. Imho.
woot order vs tigerdirect order
I bought one from woot and then one from tigerdirect the day after. Booted them up next to each other and they were identical. The one from tiger came first and within 2 days so there would be no way they would have had time to resell it if they bought it from woot. They are now on sale at tiger so these may have been a huge woot purchase, but I do not believe mine was, considering how fast it came.
Mine seems to be brand new and works fine. After all Woot said it was new Charged up, activated wireless and played around a bit, no problem. Been playing angry birds far too much. May try to mod it when I can find all the info and know I'm not missing anything. Otherwise I don't think it is as horrible as one would be led to believe.

woot tends to sell a whole range of things, from brand new to refurbished. that is how they can get so many and sell them for so cheap. refurbished CAN be better than brand new, btw. whatever breaks first is fixed and then it is reshipped as refurbed.
Apps disappeared, classic different...

I got mine on Friday. Charged it for 4+ hours, fired it up and the launcher
took me to classic with a bunch of apps already installed as in the quote above.
I get a notice for OTA, which it goes through. I reboot and I'm still back to the same classic screen as when I first fired up the tablet (before OTA). I checked and it indeed flashed the new version (3588). Saturday, I don't spend too much time with it except for a half hour of angry birds. Sunday night, I turn it on: classic now doesn't look the same, some of the apps (as mentioned in quote above) have disappeared. WTH happened?

I had to re d/l the apps but someone posted how to find the pond background again. Long press on classic home (anywhere there isn't an icon) a menu pops up. Select wallpaper, then select live wallpaper. There are several you can choose from including the elusive water/pond. I was happy that it wasn't overwritten even tho it sucks the bottom out of my battery LOL you can almost see the sides collapsing as the juice is drawn out of it

On my 5th Atrix and still having problems... HELP!

I searched signal loss, and dropped signal but could not find a thread that matched my problem. I have found some people with similar problems through google search but I haven't seen any fixes.
Here we go...
I got my first atrix BRAND NEW in July. It ran perfect! Updated to GB, factory reset it and everything was working great. Couple weeks later it started doing random restarts. It got to the point where it would lock up at the M logo for 10-20 min or sometimes even constantly so I would have to pull the battery. It got so bad that I had to take it in for warranty. I had this phone for over a month with NO signal problems what so ever.
I get the 1st remanufactured Atrix and it is dropping signal left and right. I called up ATT and jumped through their hoops, turned it off, let them mess with it, factory reset it and NOTHING. Still had the same problem, would go from 3 bars to 4 bars then it will drop signal and the red circle will show up. probably happens about 5 times per minute.
They tell me to take it back, so I oblige. I go up to the warranty center and they give me a new sim card and say that should fix it.... NOPE, Still doing the same exact thing so I take it back up there again. The give me another(#2) remanufactured phone. I finish the setup and guess what... Still have a worthless signal and it is dropping out a lot.
For reference, signals on the first two replacement atrix's are running anywhere from 84dbm up to 120dbm and hangs most of the time around 96dbm.
I am now on my FOURTH remanufactured Atrix(5th overall) and still having the same problem. ATT are being total douche nozzles as they will not release me from my contract. I have spent over 30 hours dealing with them on this problem thus far and I am getting extremely tired of it.
Just for reference, my Wife has an I4 and she is not experiencing any of these problems. I also travel a lot and I experience the same problem in Dallas(home), Midlothian(hour south of Dallas), Washington DC, Tennessee, Virginia and Maryland among other places. I am pretty sure this is a software glitch since it happens wherever I am.
I have a home office and work from home. I told ATT that if this was happening with my original BRAND NEW Atrix that I would have taken it back in a heartbeat. There is not a chance I would deal with losing data and dropping signal for over a month with a brand new phone.
So, my question I guess is this. If this is a software problem, would it be best to try and root and see if that fixes it? Or will that not change a problem like this. The remanufactured phones came with 2.3 installed while my first one had 2.2 and I had to upgrade it myself. Is there a way I can remove 2.3 from this phone and reinstall it to see if that fixes it? I am completely open to suggestions as I have run out of options.
I know exactly what you mean. I also had 3-4 *new* atrixs right from att. (Around late July) Every time instead of addressing the problems, they just gave me a new device. Eventually I decided to root and unlock my bootloader. BEST decision that I could have made. As soon as I installed a different ROM it was as if I had a new device. I was about to exchange it for a different device and now I'm really glad that I didn't. For the signal issues I would try flashing a new radio to see if that helps at all.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
My first atrix was like that and it was a refurbished one. On my 2nd, it is completely fine. I think you should tell them to send you NEW atrix instead of a refurb.
that sounds like really terrible luck. i a agree, i think it would help a lot if you rooted your phone and installed some custom rom. although there may be truth with what Semseddin and might actually still be something awry with the refurbs

Unfortunately I have tried to get them to send me a new phone but they will not do it. I tried several times, even talked to the managers about it and nothing.
What is ridiculous is that when my first phone crashed I was only like 14 days past the return period where I could have received a NEW Atrix. I tried explaining this too them and they would not do anything to help me. I have been with Cingular/ATT for over 10 years and they obviously didn't care.
I think i will just try a new rom and see how that goes.
Hmm..well if you've absolutely made up ur mind on rooting ur phone and installing custom roms then i would recommend u to use the DarkSide ROM since it seems to have most of the fixes u need (including the signal loss..See ChangeLog for more)
Also, if u've already tried Randomverll's idea of flashing a new radio and still it didn't help, it may be a hardware problem..anyway try flashing a new rom and see

White screen freeze and lock up- so disappointed

I have been very happy with my Nexus 9. I bought it at Best Buy the first day it came out. I just returned from a holiday trip, and I kept thinking what a great
traveling device I had, so compact, yet so nice to use, so much better than the laptop I used to carry. I liked the screen, the aspect ratio, the performance.
Well, as soon as I returned, I was surfing Firefox and the screen went all crazy with an abstract pattern and I could only reboot with the power button.
Since then, this has started to happen repeatedly when my battery level drops below about 40%. The screen is white or white with some sort of geometric pattern
and the device is completely frozen. This morning I rebooted, played with it a few more minutes and it happened again.
I have found a few mentions of similar problems online and none of them were fixed by a software reset. Of course, I will do that, but I'm convinced this is not going to help.
So I've had my tablet for a few months beyond the year warranty. And I paid full original price. And I can live with it and keep the battery above 40%, assuming things don't
degrade, but of course, they usually do. Or I can try to work with HTC to pay for an expensive repair (motherboard replacement was said to work). Or I can write it off
and replace it.
I like Android. I am thinking the Pixel C would even be a step up. But I have some big concerns. My first Nexus 7 (2012) failed after warranty was up. Now my Nexus 9 is failing
very soon after warranty is up. I really hate the Apple way of doing things, but I do know that if I get an iPad, I won't have any problems getting it fixed, plus I think it would
be much more mature than a new Google tablet that has sold to a handful of Android enthusiasts.
So I'm just disappointed. With 20/20 hindsight, I should have gotten Best Buy's extended warranty, but that's life. Anyway, I would be grateful for any suggestions. Thank you.
Monday update: For those who may be interested. I contacted HTC customer service and they told me that my warranty expires in 5 days. So I am sending it back under warranty.
As I tried to back up data prior to wiping it clean, I discovered that the Nexus 9 mounts on my Windows 7 computer as it always did, but there is no longer a file system that shows up. I had to back up my data over wifi
using FTP. So this is a very clear and repeatable problem, which means the HTC people will not have to try to reproduce an intermittent freeze up.
Anyway, it will go back tomorrow and I hope for the best.
Hey,
I have the same issue with my tablet, was it fixed?

There is an extra step involved from Marshmallow deices to see the filesystem: - http://www.androidcentral.com/inside-marshmallow-usb-connection-options
Thanks corkiejp I did figure this out. I was so stressed backing up all my files before sending it back I sort of freaked out when the file system was gone. But yes, it is just another step to get it back.
In response to "was it fixed?" I am not yet sure. I called HTC and they called it a software problem and reinstalled the OS. I told the guy I was sure this would not fix it (based primarily on other peoples' reports online) and he "noted" my irritation, but that was the extent of their fix.
So I got all my apps installed from the image (very convenient) which took a few hours, then it gave me 3 system updates and now I'm back to where I started. I have let it run down to 25% battery a few times
and there has been no failure so far.
I do have a gut feeling that this was actually not a software problem and it will show up again. At least I will be able to push for warranty service if that happens.
I sure do love this tablet. I was using my 2013 Nexus 7 while it was gone. I was crazy about the Nexus 7 as my first tablet in 2012, but the Nexus 9 makes it seem quite antiquated and the bigger screen is much better for everything I use it for. If the Nexus 9 does fail again, I'll send it back, but I was quite serious about trying an ipad. I will need to jailbreak it to get it anywhere near a product I can use, but that seems to be a breeze. But anyway, Nexus 9 is working great at the moment.
Latest update. So for about 3 weeks I used my Nexus 9 and charged it whenever it got down below about 30% battery and no problems. So I thought OK maybe this was a software problem after all and it was fixed.
However, yesterday, it froze on white screen at 39% battery. Clearly this is not fixed. I will wait until I see this happen once or twice more, then contact HTC and tell them I need to claim warranty service even though I am
now out of warranty, since their first fix under warranty did not work. Then I will see if they will fix it under warranty and most importantly, whether or not they just reinstall software again and call it fixed.

This happened to my first N9 after 4 months. They k ow it's not a software problem. It's ridiculous that they present they've never seen this issue everytime someone reports it. I demanded replacement for mine. I tried flashing a factory image myself before that and it changed nothing.
You are not alone - my N9 fails below battery 60% https://youtu.be/-ISHFFZVJVw and http://goo.gl/1i50x4

Camera crashes, fingerprint does not work and battery drains way too fast

Hey folks,
I've been having few issues with my phone since i bought it brand new the day it released in Germany (I am not german however, haha) - sometimes it would be slow, it would overheat and apps would be crashing because of that.
In november last year, I decided to try and solve that headache (honestly not worthy of the premium price I paid for it when it was new) by unlocking the bootloader and flashing a different kernel (not sure which one now). All seemed well for a few days, but them the fingerprint scanner stopped working (hardware not found), camera would freeze the phone for about a minute before restarting the whole UI, the battery would drain at a stupidly high rate (1 hour screen on time would leave me with 50 % battery in the afternoon, and I am not even doing anything system heavy) and the bluetooth was as buggy as before (the notorious terrible range of it). :crying:
So i figured the kernel was at fault and decided to flash stock firmware from Sony. I tried 3 different stock firmwares and oh my god, It's still there. I think unlocking the bootloader has inflicted all this. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I could do to get rid of atleast the fingerprint and camera problems? I am almost certain I will replace the phone soon for something else, but for the sake of trying to fix what was wrong from the factory and for the fact I might want to sell the phone, I want to make it work. I don't think returning it to the store for a replacement would work, since I managed to crack the back glass at one point last year and they'll just refuse it for mechanical damage ...
Thanks for any suggestions. Phone's not rooted, I could not figure out a reasonable way on how to do it, I am not very skilled in this regard, even though I had rooted my 2 previous Nexus phones (speaking of which, I miss my Nexus 4, but no 4G and bad battery made me change to Sony).
Aaaaanyway, I updated to 7.0 Nougat from one of our nation's carriers and so far so good. Will keep you posted, especially if things go south again. :cyclops:

Question Shutting down every time screen turns off

Hi all,
Received my 1 iii yesterday, spent several hours setting it up, tweaking, testing, transferring files--and love it. Been an LG V-series user for the last six years, but with LG bowing out and having moved toward radiused corners, rounded glass, notches, etc. anyway--I'm very glad Sony is still out there making sane, non-compromised phones with basic features like microSD, no hole punch, and headphone jacks that are now treated as "niche" or "enthusiast".
BUT, unfortunately, having a very odd problem, and can't find any examples of anyone else having the issue... but it basically makes the phone unusable.
Literally any time the screen turns off--whether via pressing the power button, or via an inactiivty screen time out--the phone either shuts down, or restarts.
I've done a factory reset several times, tested it with fully restored apps/settings/personal data/etc., and totally un-restored, makes no difference--the issue always happens. So it's not the fault of any setting I altered, app I installed or disabled, etc.
I remember the first time I booted up the phone--but none of the factory reset times since then--that it said something about some setting being on to prevent battery wear from the phone being accidentally turned on during shipping. So maybe there's some bizarre setting somewhere that auto-shuts-down the phone when the screen turns off? Otherwise I'm at a total loss...
Thanks in advance for any help!!
Here is one of two reviews from Amazon about this phone:
"Got in the infinity reboot issue right out of the box...a $1200+ phone, very disappointed .
Got it today on the release. Then start setup and update. Not even until all set up finished, it restarted first time. Then again in just about 15mins. Overall been through restart 12 times. Try hard reset and all other methods, not helping. Return....."
So, unless you are the one who left this review...you are not alone! This type of stuff makes me so disappointed!
Sounds like the reviewer on Amazon was having a different problem. Mine stays on perfectly fine as long as one is interacting with it--only shuts down/restarts if the screen turns off.
Given the variety of software states in which the problem occurs--vlank setup, full set-up, safe mode--seems like a rare hardware issue. As long as it can be replaced with a correctly functioning unit quickly, it's still the phone I want...
If not, I guess I ride out my LG V50 till it dies, and then quit using smart phones...
Having to ship it in for warranty repair. Seems like almost certainly a hardware problem--sounds like I "won" the lemon lottery. A bummer, but not an indictment of the phone generally.
But I'm still really digging the phone--when it works. Did a video A/B with my LG V50, and while it didn't strike me as miles better--it definitely was when full-screen. Not having to look at rounded corners and a notch is worth a lot to me. With font and display set to smallest settings, *love* the look and roominess of the screen.
I agree with not wanting notches, or punch holes...this is why I am interested in this phone...PLUS I truly miss having a notification LED. However, so far the reviews from end users/owners...not the "pro" reviewers on YouTube..is leaning towards the negative! My last three phones have been from OnePlus. Currently on the 8T. I know many have started to slam OnePlus for their practice of late patches and higher prices...but I have not had even ONE problem with any of the OnePlus phones I've had! They just work. I've had the 6, 7-Pro, and now the 8T. There's nothing out there that even interests me any longer that doesn't overheat, or freeze, or have unnecessary dedicated assistant buttons??? Disgusted with them all. I just might have to take a harder look at Apple!!!!
Outside of what appears to be a truly random and uncommon hardware issue that's affecting mine per this thread--I actually really loved the 1 mk iii so far.
I haven't had overheating issues, camera seemed excellent, loved the hardware build quality, *LOVE* having a proper screen again (including no notches, aspect ratio, and tons of room w/ fonts and appearance set to smallest). I will never buy a phone that doesn't have microSD support, and access on this phone is awesome (no tool needed).
I wouldn't be too quick to write it off--especially not for the likes of Apple, who provide a hugely compromised, feature-removing, closed-ecosystem product at an inflated price for what you get.
Keep in mind--it's the internet, so you're going to far disproportionatly have people needing to discuss problems. Folks for whom nothing goes wrong--for any product--won't tend to seek out places like this to say so. So I wouldn't let a really small sample of issues unduly color your view...
Hi I have the exact same issue. Received mine on the 24th and transferred everything over from Oppo find X2 pro. Thought it was me at first when trying to wake but it rebooted. All fine until used in car QI base. After 20 minute drive picked it up and tried to wake only for the same thing to happen. Did this several times yesterday and this morning both on and off charge and while cool to touch. Very disappointing as expected more for something that cost nearly £1200! Like the phone a lot and prefer it over the Oppo but cannot find a way around this. A new 256k micro SD card also being used so have tried without this, without the EE sim and factory reset but still it happens. It's unusable as is so will have to be replaced, unless any suggestions?
Have had a few good Android phones from Huawei P20 pro, Mate 20X to current Oppo in recent times but never had an issue like this.
Having to swap back to the Oppo is very time consuming and exasperating!
Shame as this is a stunningly good phone.

Forgot to say there are others on here with similar issue, under random reboot thread.
After sending in for "repair" and receiving it back with no improvement (but "repaired"), Sony has finally agreed I'm due a replacement unit. Have shipped my first unit off, due to arrive to them next Wednesday. Will hopefully receive a properly-functioning replacement soon thereafter... Agree that, if the phone didn't have this bizarre issue, it would be great--very close to what I want in a phone (versus the myriad options out there that don't offer what I want, and insist on absurd design choices I detest).
So, we'll see. Certainly frustrating to have an issue like this on a phone that costs more than plenty of computers...
(To be clear, I had the issue literally every time, from the beginning, regardless of what I had/hadn't set up, installed, sim card/no sim card, micro SD/no micro SD, etc.).
I have Xperia™1 III but the phone is really stable for me, no random reboot. I have only heating issue. Xperia™ XZ2 Premium hasn't heat like this phone. My phone is Hong Kong device
Most likely not what caused your issue...but...it is NOT a good idea to allow any backup to install all your previous apps from an "old" phone to a new one. I know it can be a major pain and very time consuming to install everything from scratch when setting up a new phone...however...when you allow a backup to flow freely onto a new phone you are allowing all the junk to come back also! It's up to you, but I always install everything from scratch and it may not be related but...I have owned many, many phones and NEVER had all the problems that so many have all across the board. Am I just lucky, or is it because I have so much experience with computers and know how to set things up properly? YMMV

I think you have been lucky
Like you I have never had a problem and been in IT since the early 80's but this isn't something that's has been moved over. Sadly, the phone behaves the same wether out of the box or fully migrated. In the PC world I saw something similar with overheating and poorly cooled AMD processors in the 90's and am wondering if this is a heat related component batch issue?
Sony need to get a grip on this sharpish or they will be looking at refunds, which is never good.
The reboots are caused by the fingerprint reader. My new phone would bootloop while fast charging if my one and only configuration after a factory reset was setting a fingerprint.
DO NOT SEND IT IN FOR A WARRANTY REPAIR - - IT WILL GET WORSE
Get a refund.
First, Sony sent it to SBE with FedEx Ground, which currently takes about 2 weeks.
Second, SBE returned it bricked and voided my warranty. They said I flashed it but I had sent it in new and unmodified. I didn't even think they returned my own phone back because it had a UK/EU label and destroyed firmware. Sony Support would no longer help me because I was no longer a customer. SBE insisted I was a firmware flasher that deserved nothing. I ran EMMA and it showed my phone IMEI, locked bootloader, and stock firmware.
I finally found somebody on Sony Support who would give me an RMA. Maybe it was their mistake, but I wasted no time shipping it back. I'm doing a credit card charge reversal if I get any more crap from Sony/SBE.
I have spoken to Sony UK tech support and they have confirmed there is a reboot issue with some1iii's. Apparently, second line technical support have identified the issue (software) and there will be a revision released to cure this. When pressed, they couldn't give me a date for this and were a little vague. I was advised to return to my supplier for a refund.
Not good on a phone costing £1200 and surprised they haven't got their act together more quickly. They seem to be struggling getting phones shipped presently and my supplier has confirmed a 14 day wait if I want to re-order. I don't know if this is just poor advanced planning by Sony UK or if this is a Sony global problem trying to get hold of the components for manufacture.
Despite all the issues, this phone still ticks all the boxes for me so have decided to wait for the dust to settle!
Good to know there's some awareness now on Sony's part of this issue, and a plan yo resolve it via software (?). If the second unit I get has the same issue, I guess I'll wait a bit for that aoftware resolution--but deeply hoping I won't have the issue again.
I will say, I believe I tested not registering any fingerprints on at least one of the numerous factory resets I tried, and I believe the issue still occurred--had seen threads of similar issues stemming from the fingerprint reader on other manufacturer's phones, so tried to rule it out...
The original phone I got back from SBE wasn't bricked, it just wasn't in any way improved. Fortunately Sony didn't make any weird claims that I'd done anything wrong (I wouldn't know how to mess with "rooting" or whatever--no interest/need to). It was delivered to Sonyin San Diego by FedEx today--so hoping my replacement unit ships in the next day or two...

Agreed. With LG gone, I really want the Xperia 1 iii to pan out--only phone that has microSD, no notches/currves/radiused corners, a hogh-res screen, and a headphone jack. If I can't get one to work properly, I'll probably just buy another LG V50, second-hand.
