[Q] does rooted tethering cost $$? - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok I've been curious about this for quite some time. I know using verizons "mobile hotspot" costs extra on your phone bill but what if I use wireless tethering for root users? Does that go through verizon and I get charged?

I use open garden tether and have never been charged.

I've always used Barnacle Tether. You need a custom kernel that eliminates the hotspots monitoring though if you want to tether.(most custom kernels eliminate the hotspots monitor)

That's awesome! I'm on CM7 and knowing jt and cyanogenmod, the hotspot moniter is most likely eliminated lol

[Q] Free tether without root???

I have a samsung vibrant and i was tethering with easytether when tmobile blocked my tethering cause it isn't on my plan. I don't want to root my phone, so is there any way to tether for free without rooting? (Windows Vista)
If they're blocking your phone, I wouldn't think so, unless it's as easy as just getting another tether app.
Sent from my Incredible with the XDA Premium App.
Use a ROM with Mobile AP (2.2+ I believe). People have reported using it whether or not they've paid for tethering, but if they've blocked you this may not work.
Why don't you want to root?
I agree with "Why not root?" I rooted before on 2.1 and was using Barnacle (free wifi tether app) before upgrading to froyo 2.2 (which in Wireless and network settings includes Mobile AP for wifi tether, or USB tethering).
Are you on 2.2? Im also not sure if you can use the mobile ap or usb tether from froyo if they blocked you for using easytether.
I highly doubt it is being bloacked, do you mean throttled?
No Tmobile completely blocks tethering... they started charging for it.. but they can only tell if your using stock non-rooted

OP, looks like root is your answer...

Tethering?

I'm confused. I understand that Sprint charges extra to allow customers to enable tethering via their cell phones. And I understand that many rooted phones can have apps installed and/or enabled to allow tethering without any extra charge. (Please correct me if any of that is inaccurate.)
So what happens when I turn on the wifi hotspot on my new phone? Will it fail because I don't have a "tethering" option on my plan? Will it work, but add $30 to my monthly bill? Or will something else happen.
Same with the USB tethering? How does that work? And get billed?
This 3vo is the first phone I've had that offered these options.
You can use USB tethering without paying the $30/month fee. That's just for WiFi tethering. If you try to use the WiFi hotspot, it simply will just not work. You will not be charged.

Both wired and wireless tethering fail with the message to contact Sprint to upgrade your plan.
What about pdanet? I haven't had time to try it out yet.

No, I'm not happy to see you, that's a Shooter in my pocket.

This app is cheap and works great check it out here Also you CAN tether a wifi connection for free but not using mobile connection.
Tethering Roms
I found when you try to use either wireless or wired tethering build into the software, you get that error message and it also shuts down the 3g signal. You can still form an adhoc network wirelessly but no internet.
I'm looking for a Rom that unlocks the built in tethering. I just found Virusrom to do a good job. Any other roms you can recommend that just unlock the built in tethering functions?

Wifi Hotspots CM7

When I activate wireless tether in the notification bar next to the wireless tether icon the phones says tethering or hotspots active this doesn't mean im paying extra for it does it?

No the built-in app does not automagically sign you up for a tethering plan.
Absolute_Zero thanks
wireless tether for root?
Is there any version of the wireless tether for root app that works with aosp? I know that cm7 roms have their built-in wireless tethering but it's not as feature rich

Wireless Tether 2.0.7 works perfectly on 3G or 4G. I use it on my ROM everyday.

Correct....you are wrong. There is a Tethering & Hotspot section for USB or wifi tethering under Wireless & Networks (also available via the notification power widget if added).
As DroidTh3ory said, there are versions of Wireless Tether that work as well if you want some of it's features like mac filtering and such.
Ah I apologize for my ignorance I thought that was Verizons tethering

I've tried a few versions on the 627 radio. Used to work on one of your sense roms Theory but this one shows no connectivity. The built in hotspot icon always shows up when I turn wireless tether for root on, is that normal?

[Q] Have unlimited data (Grandfathered) looking for app to tether

I have a grandfathered unlimited data setup (part of my base
package not a 'data plan'). Is there a non-root way to do wi-fi
tethering short of the official hotspot option?
Open Garden worked really well with my DInc, but no idea if it would work with the Rezound and 4G. I will try it once I am rooted (requires root).

I used open garden on my TBolt and my Galaxy Tab and it worked fine.

Non root? I dont think so... U can tether via usb without root, not wifi that im aware of
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using XDA App
I'll try a few today and let you know how they work out.
I am rooted with the one click root, and it has wireless tether built in.
No, wifi tethering requires root. Try usb, or root it. Unlocking bootloader is pretty easy and safe being official and all. Root is also pretty easy.
Have seen some people say that open garden hangs when they try to stop the tethering, but so far it does seem to be the only app that allows tethering in infrastructure rather than ad hoc. And yes you do need to be rooted.

Tether your Touchpad

OK... After sacrificing my ability to tether by moving from CM7 xronified to ICS, I have tried all kinds of combinations to tether my Epic 4G Touch to my TP on ICS (currently running CM9 alpha 2).
I came across the app foxfi in the market and it WORKS. I am still on cloud 9 at the moment, but has anyone heard anything bad about this app? It doesn't behave like open garden or wifi tether, but its freaking working. I am posting from the tethered connection right now.

What tethering app are you using?
I must be missing something, how is it possible that what version of Android your TouchPad is running effects your phones ability to be a wifi hotspot?
I have never had an issue with using the built in wifi portable hotspot in Android to tether my TouchPad. If you enabled that on your phone when you were running CM7 on your TP, how would ICS affect that.
What am I missing?

Touchpad doesn't play so nicely with all tethers. Consider yourself lucky. Alot of people dumped their TPs because they couldn't get tethering to work. It is very buggy. All 3 of my TPs don't tether at will. In the past, there have been different protocols to get each to work. My hotspot could be seen by every other device I own, but my TPs couldn't see it. There are tons of bug threads relating to wifi, but nothing really talking about tethering. I saw a few other threads in forums for phones addressing touch pad, but why not have a place in the touch pad forum to bring it all to one spot?
Now Foxfi works with all three TPs and no ceremonial switches and reboots are required to get it to go.
Mine tethers from my Atrix perfectly with the built in setting. didn't know people were dumping their tp cuz of tether.

Dumb ?
Read what was here, but question:
Do I need to root my phone? I have the HTC Incredible 2, and am not trying to root that and just trying to connect my Touchpad (wifi-only) to my phone and be able to use internet, market, etc.
What apps and instructions would I need?
I thinking only people on Sprint (or Verizon?) have that issue....I tether my tp with my Samsung captivate on ATT all the time...so does my Sister from HTC sensation on Tmobile....
@Salvation27/: u csn try this app Clockworkmode tether

As far as I know, without rooting, you will have to pay for the hotspot service by your provider in order to tether. I would say try PDAnet, but I haven't heard of anyone successfully tethering via BT.

That could be the issue too. I will test it with some of my friends phones and report back (might be a day or two). I didn't think about a possible conflict with carrier specific phones.

According to the info on the Market, Foxfi does not require rooting. But you will need to check to see if it is compatible with your phone.
I have a rooted Bionic, works really sweet with it.

I use freetether on my pre2 to tether-via-wifi with my touchpad, works great.
You're right about the bluetooth. The option is there, and I can get everything to link up, but it still doesn't seem to be actually sharing the internet connection. I thought it'd be brilliant to get bluetooth tethering going (it should use a bit less energy to tether, giving me better battery life), but it doesn't seem to work in all the testing and fiddling I've done...
