[Q] CWM seems to have bricked the phone - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Rooted the phone, installed ROM Manger, installed CWM from RM, selected version for Samsung Galaxy 2 AT&T.
Backed up the ROM
Went back into CWM to do a manual check and now CWM does nothing. I can navigate through itand select tasks, but that just talkes me to a screen wth the tophat logo.
Remove battery and phone boots into CWM with the same problems.

This has just got to be in the FAQ.
ROM Manager is not compatible with the SII at this point.
If you can still get into download mode and/or recovery, you are fine.

I finally got CWM to respond and it rebooted the phone properly. ROM Manger has been removed.
That was an exciting couple of hours...

Rom manager is.compatible but you need to use a compatible kernel. Clockwork kernel for an example

did you pick vibrant when you flashed clockwork with rom manager ??
In order to get into Clockwork, you have to have Clockwork in your internal memory.
Go into the market and install the app ROM Manager. At the top of ROM Manager, there will be a button that says Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. Press that and select your phone. Once that finishes, press the button under that, that says "Reboot into Recovery".
If it's your first time going into recovery, then it's going to popup with the stock recovery screen. Once you get to the stock recovery screen, select "Reinstall Packages" and select it with the power button. Now, my memory is a little fuzzy, but it should either take you directly back to the recovery screen, or reboot into the recovery screen, but either way, once it goes back to that same screen, select Reinstall packages again, and it should take you to the Clockwork Recovery.
EDIT: Oh, I just remembered this also. If you still have the update.zip in your internal memory, ROM Manager won't overwrite it. You have to plug your phone in to your computer, delete the update.zip, then go back into ROM Manager and reflash ClockworkMod Recovery. Then continue with what I said above.
(The update.zip that's in your memory right now is the update you applied to root your phone, just so you know. It's not required anymore.)

go to recovery and reinstall packages twice ??
that should take you to clockwork recovery
well im going to tell u wht to do from stock ok as its easier for me!
power off phone
pull out battery
GRAB THIS STUFF : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1047087
turn on odin
attach phone to pc with usb cable
now while holding down both volume buttons put battery back in.
now you should be in download mode and go back to stock with odin from here!
make sure u put the proper .pit and .pda file in there proper places on odin and ur set to go.
Enjoy and also make sure u have the proper samsung drivers
then after that go here and downoad the update package:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1047087
u wanna download the eclair method of root update package.
then install that on ur internal sd card and go into recovery it should be blue, now click to reinstall packages u should have to do once or twice usually twice. After that it will trun green.
Then go into rom manager and as he said above flash clockwork recovery click vibrant. After that is done u will have clockwork and root access and able to flash any rom
I started using odin before I ever even properly updated to 2.2.... however I do remember having issues like this on a Captivate that was 2.2, I remember that you for sure have to "reinstall packages" twice after flashing CWM. after that you shouldn't have to do it again.....

[Q] Cannot get Clockworkmod Recovery on my rooted SIII

Okay I've rooted my phone using this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1701770. All in all it went well I got my phone fully rooted and everything works fine however when trying to get a full nandriod backup I found that I didn't get Clockworkmod recovery which should have happened. After trying the root method a few more times i noticed in the video @3:43 onwards it shows the cmw recovery symbol for a while in the video however on my sIII it just pops up for a few seconds and then disappears only to be replaced by Andy (the android guy) with a revolving diamond shaped mesh around his stomach. Now when I enter recovery mode the backup/restore option is not there instead I only get :reboot system now, apply update from external storage, wipe data/factory reset wipe cache partition and apply update from cache. (Another note I do not see the ClockWorkMod Recovery 5.5.0.4 - v1.4 when in recovery mode at the top of the screen as I should instead I see android system recovery <3e>)
Any form of help would be greatly appreciated! Also if you need a video of what happens when I root I can try to upload a video or at least a photo
The original method works best .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238
Otherwise ask in the method you used thread .
jje
Will it be safe enough to do so? like I'm rooted now so will anything happen if I try the original method?
No, using ODIN is always fine so long as you don't go ticking boxes you shouldn't.

Okay tried again didnt work tried without sd card still the same result =[
anyone got an ideas?
What are you doing to get to recovery? Your not using rom manager are you?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
no I'm using the cwm manger app and tapping the recovery mode. However when I first open the app a pop up appears it says: This version of CWM Manager should be used with CF-CWM v1.1 or newer. It appears you are running a different recovery. Various features have been disabled.
The .tar file I used was version 6.2
Go to the cwm thread, download the file and flash that in ODIN.

If anyone else is experiencing this problem go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238 download v6.3 and do just do the same steps detailed.

How did you actually install Recovery?

I would advise against using Rom Manager.Ive tried to boot into recovery from there on 2 phones and it freezes, whether I dont use it properly or it wipes out my cwm install I dont know, but it did. Then I had a hell of a job flashing stock>rerooting>getting my nand backup cos I needed custom recovery.
I was thinking it was when you use it to download a recovery option and it wipes out/overwrites the working one you had.
Exactly

Rom Manager doesn't behave well with the s2. It will give you the recovery you download through it but reverts back to your previous recovery when you next boot up.
I'd say stop using it now.

Flashed CWM with ROM manger now cannot leave cwm

Hey guys, my friend decided to flash a custom rom, asked me for help, so I told him to get rom manager and install cwm first.
He was rooted already, not long after telling him. To use rom manager to get cwm, he messages me telling me he is stuck cwm, it seems that every time he turns in the phone or restarts he cannot leave cwm at all, he also claims he cannot get into download mode, keeps taking him to cwm.
I got him to and re flash cwm via cwm, but it gave him an error.
Has anyone heard of getting stuck in cwm before??

Get your friend to read the stickies in general, before he flashes anything else and destroys his phone.
Follow the guide to restoring to fully stock using odin on his pc, it might enable the phone to boot normally.

[Q] HELP: I need help removing Yellow Triangle from Boot

Hello.
This is urgent. I need this phone to work as soon as possible
I'm new to the modding scene, and I have decided to install 5.1.1 Lollipop on my Samsung SII GT-i9100.
I tried to download this ROM off this page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/development-derivatives/rom-cyanogenmod-12-t2955551
It says I need :"Kitkat Compatible Recovery". I suspect this was the problem as I had Jellybean 4.1.2, not any KitKat version but I was attempting to install Lollipop 5.1.1 (if any of this makes any sense at all).
This is the page that I found after googling "KitKat Compatible Recovery": http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/install-an...ible-cwm-recovery-galaxy-s2-i9100-how-1434170
The page says to flash "GT-I9100_JB_ClockworkMod-Recovery_6.0.2.9.tar" onto my gt-i9100 using Odin, which is what I did.
When the flash was completed and I saw the "PASS" message in Odin, the page said the phone should reboot automatically. This did not happen. When I tried booting manually, I was shown "Samsung Gallaxy SII GT-I9100" with a yellow triangle and exclamation mark underneath. Then the boot sound played but the screen stayed black. After this the phone screen stayed black and did not boot.
I did some searching on how to remove said triangle, but in all the examples I have found the phone booted. Mine didn't.
All I'm asking is if someone knows how to fix my phone back to normal, or a redirect to a link where this issue is already addressed.
Thanks for your help.
P.S. Recovery and Download are accessible normally

When you boot into recovery which version do you have? If it is the 6.0.2.9 CWM, then flash the CWM 6.0.4.5 mentioned (from recovery) then reboot back into recovery(not system). You should now have CWM 6.0.4.5. Now from this recovery, do a full wipe(factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik cache(from advanced in menu) and format system. Then flash the rom and gapps(if you want them). Then reboot to system.
If you have the stock 3e recovery, you need to enable root access. Let us know if this is the case
I have CM v5.8.1.8, but I flashed 6.0.2.9.
That's weird
Don't worry about the triangle for now, just goto recovery flash a lollipop rom with gapps, after you are in the rom just use the triangle away app and remove it (I have done this loads of times) but be sure you have the correct KitKat recovery or this might not work.

Could you explain how to flash it? It's a .zip file not .tar.
If you mean that I should put the .zip in the root of my phone, I can't do that as I when I plug in my phone to my PC I can't access root. (I suspect this is because my phone is not booted and I can't get it to boot)

I know this much, but the problem is that I don't have a ROM on my phone, and I can't access root so I can't place it there. I see an option called "sideload" in the recovery menu, but I don't know what this means and how I could use it.
I have flashed the .tar file you attached. Now I can't access recovery mode.
Okay I've managed to enter recovery by removing the battery and going into download, pressing down-volume to boot and then entering recovery normally. Now what.
I can now enter recovery. What do i do now

GUYS I got it to work. I flashed the two files from the description of this video, and used cm-kernel-09-05-2015-TWRP-2.8.6.0 to flash both of these files. It took some firguring out, but I got there in the end. The ROM is Lollipop 5.1.1 with CyanogenMod version 12.1-20150504-UNOFFICIAL-i9100.
Thanks for all the help you guys supplied, I couldn't have done this without you.
Now enjoy lollipop
