Why? what does it take?

Looking up wiki quickly, I found the following:
Gingerbread released December 6 2010
CyanogenMod 7.0 released April 10 2011
Hopefully things will be faster this time around.

CyanogenMod doesn't have to be the first ICS ROM. I'm sure nighties came way before April.
My hope is that samsung releases a ICS official firmware in couple weeks..

First lets hope they do it "at all".
And my bet after that would be "when it's done".
On a more serious guess: Not this year anymore, maybe early 2012.

At least it'll take people's mind off invisible tints and irrelevant home button movement.
I personally wouldn't be surprised to see it within 2 months, but that may be partially wishful thinking.
Andy Ruben has just said in the post announcement interview that ICS updates should be a couple of weeks after the Gnexus release. However I personally wouldn't hold your breath as Samsung won't want to effect sales of their flagship phone

What I mean is:
Google and Samsung will want everyone to buy the Galaxy Nexus the new flagship phone with a higher price as this will be in direct competition withe the iPhone 4GS. However why will people buy this when they can buy the still excellent, but cheaper Samsung Galaxy S2 if it has the latest update.
Personally I won't buy the GNexus as I'm very happy with the SGS2 and I can't afford the upgrade. So all I can hope is that someone will port the ROM
People will get upset if they buy phones that dont stay up to date.
But yeh, wait for them to profit off the Gnex for a bit.

This is something that pisses me of about android, I just recently got 2.3.4 on my unbranded SGS2, At this rate I expect Ice Cream sandwich by next summer and by that time something bigger and better will be along.

There will always be something bigger and better. For what it's worth, you can always upgrade your unbranded phone manually to something newer than 2.3.4.
I don't know how many that buys for example an SGS2 are "hardcore" users and just "plain" users (i.e only does the official updates via Kies etc).

This isn't something specific about Android, this is a generalization about all technology and perhaps most all retail items. You must be from another planet.

Alright, so I did a little searching and still have a question on whether the Atrix is going to get Ice Cream sandwich, as all of you know, the newer Android OS, not released yet (but within 1-2 months).
Only other thread found http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=973034
We obviously have an unlocked bootloader and a host of options available for the phone, including CM7 which is in pre-beta, but what about ice cream sandwich?
I understand motorola PROBABLY won't release it, because they only recently released gingerbread, but does anyone know of someone willing to port it, once it's rolled out? or...anything?!
Thanks
An official version, I highly doubt it. A leaked custom ROM of it, more than likely...
Can you say, Cyanogenmod 8!? Hopefully but I heard that newer devices will be able to run it. So I'm guessing that the inspire, atrix, infuse sensation, etc. And as far as the official update for ice cream sandwich, I would forget about it

no one knows the answer to this question, so there's no point in asking it.
I have a doubt about getting ICS on the Atrix.
Let's suppose that Motorola won't bring us ICS officially.
Given that starting from Android ICS there must be proprietary, binary drivers for properly running it: how would Cyanogenmod 9 work for the Atrix, if there won't be those proprietary drivers?
Why did you resurrect this after 3 months? As if there weren't enough of these threads!
Because this was here first.
That's a great question
Sent from my CM860
The best way to get ICS right now is to buy a Galaxy Nexus. The best way to make friends on these here XDA Atrix forums is to be patient and stop agonizing over when the Atrix will see it. The speculation never ends, but at some point you just have to stfu and enjoy what you have!

At least I made half-damages. Now it is gone, this thread is resurrected and my question is still valid.
I am waiting for a CM luminary to help me understand about the new strange "We love opensource, but you need the proprietary binary driver" Google policy and how this will impact non-officially upgradeable devices.
Yeah, I don't exactly understand how google is planning to get that ball rolling either, if the drivers aren't all available.
As for the atrix, from what my understanding is, the real issue with ICS not being ported is the missing Tegra 2 driver.
Now, don't quote me on that, but that's what I saw.
i think there is a slight posibility we will get official ics, seeing how the photon and bionic will probably get it, and the atrix is basically the same phone but for a different carrier. but even if we do get official, still sticking with cm9
Not sure where you saw the photon is getting it. No officials I've seen for that one. As for the bionic not gonna help us much as its not tegra 2

well seing how they are already running gb, seems like they would get an official update. and if the photon gets it since its a tegra 2 the porting would probably be pretty easy, but im not a dev so i wouldnt know.
Not going to happen....or at least for the next 6 months. this "must have the latest software" is a god damn disease. Lol I think this phone is awesome, but was never well supported or embraced by the developing community from the get go. Not being harsh but a lot of developers have left.....

And the used prices for Atrix are joke now, you can get one for 200$. I remember how I paid 343# just two month ago. I feel stupid.
As for the Tegra 2 and ICS, don't you guys know that numerous tablets will be getting ICS ?
you must be mad i paid 1 cent for mine, (granted it was with an ATT upgrade) but after taxes and their upgrade fee's .. still less than 50$ for the atrix
To me it all feels very elitist.. YOU can have the latest upgrade but YOU can't.. Most of us are locked into 2 year contracts.. Yet at the rate that phones are evolving most phones are out of date within 6 months. With new O/S upgrades coming every year at the most. So what Motorola/Google are telling me is my phone which I've had just a year is not worthy of the newest update/upgrade. What Makes it worse is with Google purchasing Motorola's mobile phone division you would think they'd showcase how the two can work together.

WHAAAAAT !!!no dude !
UPDATE: Although some websites are reporting that the event is now set for 27 October in London, Pocket-lint can confirm that this is not happening either. Sorry.
Neither Samsung nor Google has decided on a new date or location for the Nexus Prime launch yet.
Update: "A Samsung spokesperson issued a follow up statement to CNET, confirming speculation that the reveal was postponed out of respect, following the passing of Steve Jobs. "We believe this is not the right time to announce a new product as the world expresses tribute to Steve Jobs's passing," the spokesperson explained." - nice step.
Any ways it will be wise to wait for ICS to be launched for GS2 because this phone really costs too much

id wait if i was you.....your phone is good enough and probs better than most of the handsets out there as it is....come on now you should know better that this phone has the best support by devs so far...and it will stay like that till the new s3 comes out IMO..
so id wait and enjoy your phone and im sure devs will be porting over the ICS once its leaked
without wishing to be disrespectful but why postpone an event because of steve jobs? Getting seriously pissed off with this now. You'd think Mandela had died or something.

Scheduled. But no specific release date. People have been saying March / April.
The Note should definitely be getting ICS.
Okay cool thanks guys!
I believe Samsung said in Q1, and a rumor just surfaced that it would be March 1.
Murphy is a cousin of mine so i say AT&T will update to ICS 2-4 months after Int'l ppl get it from Samsung.
i <3 you Murph!!
That's the worst part of this. My Cappy has been amazing with ICS. I'm almost tempted to keep it until the Note get ICS also.
Too bad the hardware is different for the ATT note (from International version), we don't have LTE in Seattle, but I dislike the physical button on the IV.
Oh well, here's hoping ATT doesn't run the same route as the Captivate (Froyo forever sucked, then Gingerbread last week or so! It was great to have ports of gingerbread well before ATT)
OP, if ics came to the g-note a week after tomorrow it wouldn't be soon enough.
The captivate is freaking unbelievable running it. I to am enjoying it ...almost... enough to put off buying a new one. The cappy is a completely new phone...rom it on the g-note and it will -scream .... on ice cream. (sorry I couldn't help that last part)

ICS on AT&T Note is unlikely in first half of 2012. End of 2012, maybe. 2013? More likely.
It probably will not be ota.... There will probably be bootloaders if the notes ever get ics.
With my history on updates for at&t devices....if it EVER comes, count yourself
lucky. AT&T, except for the iPhones, delays, delays, delays updates.
I've had two non branded phones, and always get updates MONTHS before at&t updates.

Source? If that's just a guess, please say so.
After dealing with samsungs BS with the Vibrant, I don't believe a single word, promise, hint, or hope that they announce until I see ICS on my device. I love Samsungs hardware, but I have lost faith in the company itself long ago when dealing with my vibrant and our 10% out of the box fail rate with Sync Master monitors.
On a plus side, my vibrant runs ICS beautifully so I'm sure it will be even better on the Note once a few good ROMS are released and the bugs are worked out.

It's called common sense if you ever dealed with Samsung devices on AT&T in the past. Anything else is just naive thinking, or fantacy.
For the record, AT&T (not Samsung) is the one determines when an update will be available. And AT&T almost never give out release dates. In rare cases it did so (Captivate and Infuse GB updates are said to be available in fall 2011), they screwed it (both release in 2012).
So, any posting about release schudle is pure guess.

+1. If it comes in OTA, wait a few days. OTA update with bootloader change almost always bricks a few phones everytime Samsung tries it. Most recent is the GS2 Skyrocket 2.3.6 OTA last month.
We have to go through the phases of an over due update. We havn't even seen the numerous "i know someone who can say with certainty that..." or "my brothers cousins sisters poodles hairdresser brother works on the dev teams and said..." or my personal favorite "i know someone inside the company who says". Then there is the phase of dispair where people say they will never buy sammy again and will be selling this POS and so on. Check out the captivate and vibrant forums and you'll see lots. In the vibrants case, it was Samsungs fault for dragging their feet, not T-Mo as they hadnt received the software to bloatware onto when waiting for Froyo! Sit and wait and watch current ROM scene if you really want ICS.

That's the common mis-conception. Carrier bloatware is baked into the ROM by Samsung per carrier request.
Here is how a firmware update process goes:
1. The carrier in question must feel the need for an firmware update. It's a big deal because it has to allocate resources for extensive testing, training of CSR and actual releasing.
2. The carrier makes a request for new firmware to Samsung.
3. Samsung builds the new firmware based on carrier's request and send to carrier for testing.
4. The carrier test extensively of the new build. If there are significant problems found, it goes back to step 3.
5. After extensive testing, carrier OKs the new firmware but need to pick a release date. Most importantly it has make sure it won't jeopardize the sales of new phones.
6. Once received OK from carrier, Samsung can put out the new firmware.
I'm not sure we are even past step 1 yet.
So, I'm sure it's not only me wondering this... Are we getting this thing ever?
most likely, lots of "feature updates" and motorola is 'part of' google now. gotta think they will support their flagship phone of 2012
Of course, even if we are going to get it we won't get it for at least another year, maybe year and a half.
I hope that with the release of the pdk the thing will go better, but i don't belive that we will get it soon

No, razr is the best phone I could have compare to my other Android devices, and I very happy with my razr.
The big disappointed I got, came from Motorola's developers and service.
And, no... Ios is bad, has no many options, the system designed for little kids/not intelligent people/lazy hoes/people who can't handle complicated os and etc.

I'm assuming RAZR will get it, it is still one of the most up to date phones motorola have on offer.
Based on the ICS release I'd guess we get it rolling out about the same time the Nexus devices get Kola Kubes.
Hopefully at the same time motorola initially promise to keep the bootloader locked then decide to change their mind, completely ignore the promise and do the opposite.
Honestly, I think by the time we get it we'll all be ready to upgrade to a new phone if we haven't already. I'm gonna say Q2 2013...

I don't really have much faith in Motorola updating our devices anytime soon. They're failing to meet their own release schedules for ICS so I don't see how they will have JB out anytime soon.
I was looking for a decent tablet and hoping to get a Prime but the Nexus 7 hits the price point perfectly so I ordered a 16gb one. Hopefully there isn't an issue with Google's release/shipping date so I can enjoy JB faster.
Considering how long it took them to push ICS I seriously doubt we will ever get and official Jelly Bean OTA update. Knowing Verizon they are probably going to EOL the RAZR/MAXX not long after the RAZR HD gets released. Constantly releasing new phones brings them more money... not supporting phones they have out already. The devs on the other hand will probably have one out soon.

Releasing it the at the end of June is pretty far from their promise. And when other manufactures release ICS for their phones isn't relevant. This is about Motorola. So yes I have little faith in Motorola. If they had stated that ICS would be released for the RAZR in mid-2012 from the beginning I wouldn't complain. But that isn't what they promised.

They never promised they'd release it within 6 weeks, they promised that they'd release a list of devices that would get ICS. The Q2 release date was the only promise they ever made on it, and they've held to that for Verizon. On GSM, I'm not surprised they've pushed it back, because apparently there are some issues in this OTA and I'm sure they want to fix them up a bit, and then they'll push that update out as the first release for GSM users and a minor update for Verizon users. It probably won't that GSM users are waiting until the end of Q3 for ICS, it will probably be pretty soon.

If you READ what that infamous tweet said, they promised to release DEVICES for ICS. This means devices that meet the hardware requirements for ICS. They in no WAY promised ICS in 6 weeks and there is no way you can twist those tweets to mean that.
Waiting for ICS was horrible. I literally checked for updates every day before I threw in my towel and flashed the LATAM ICS ROM (and loving it).
If the RAZR isn't going to get the support it deserves, would you guys contemplate say, selling your device and getting an HTC One X/Galaxy SIII?
I mean, our devices are still new and can fetch a hefty sum...
Now, I realize this might be a silly question but I haven't found the right channels for right information.
What I'm wondering is will the S3 get an official 4.2.1 update from Samsung, and how far will Samsung update the device? It would be a real shame to hear that Samsung won't update their flagship phone even when they released it just over half a year ago.
Thanks in advance for an answer.

Well if you want the latest version you can always use CM10.1...It'll be on 4.2.2 in a nightly or a two.
...
Well, hardware-wise, the phone is still great. Obviously, it's been almost a year since it came out and smartphones with better specs and hardware came out throughout these past few months. You ask whether Samsung is going to update to 4.2 or not, but that's not something we can say, you should ask them directly. Anyway, my guess is that they will, probably at a slower pace since the S4 is around the corner, but the phone is nothing that old to be left out so easily.
I would hate to see a device like this to fall out of the sleigh. I guess with that apple is better at providing updates for older devices even though they might lack new software features.
I realize that developing updates for android devices is hard, especially when a company releases a new family of products and new products to replace the old ones. I guess that's just the industry. What I can't shake off though is that an S III costs almost 600€ and already inside a year, there are already plans for a newer version of that device.
Being what it is and I am happy with my S III, I hope this device will still get attention.
