can't unroot phone - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'm sure there's a thousand post about it but after going through of lot of them none helped me.
I have rooted my phone for backup purposes with CF-Root-SGS2_JP_XSG_KG2-v4.1-CWM4.tar and everything went smooth.
Now I have a signal problem with my phone and I have to send it for repair through warranty. My phone is from Bell Canada so it's a branded phone.
I tried to unroot my phone with Super One Click but it always freeze at step 6 (also tried the unplug/usb debug/replug trick but didn't work).
Then I found the stock rom CSC_I9100MBMCKG2 so I figured if I flashed with it it would work, but im still rooted (still have root word in kernel version, also have superuser and CWM in my apps, and the yellow exclamation mark and lost the M in GT-I9100M).
I did order the USB Jig for the exclamation mark and custom rom counter, but that won't help for the rest.
Any idea? Troubleshooting step?
Thanks,
Dominic
UPDATE: Tried with S2 Root, stays stuck at Remounting /system as Read Only

Doesn't sound like that was the stock rom at all, where did you find it?

Im not an expert here but evrrytime. I flash stock rom via odin. It remove the exclamation mark. By the way i download my stock rom from xda.

I downloaded it from XDA forums, so that's why I was sure it was good.
When I unroot via Odin, do I have to upload any else than the .tar file?

Alright with lots of work I managed to make it work, but I still get the software in my phone, how to remove them?

The yellow triangle after booting??

Hi
I want to root my phone now but very un sure on how to get the yellow triangle not to appear after rooting??
Theres instructions through chainfire but i can't get my head around it in all respects??
the root process seems ok to do but I wouldnt want this triangle everytime I reboot. .
Thanks
Why do you want to get rid of the yellow triangle, does it hurt you somehow?
The yellow triangle indicates that the running kernel is not signed by Samsung. Obviously to get rid of this you have to flash a Samsung-signed Kernel.
While root usually will still work, obviously other features that are depended on the modded kernel won´t work.
If you're really struggling with chainfire's instructions, there's an excellent total baby-steps guide for noobs here.
But you can learn to live with the triagle - how often do you watch a reboot screen anyway?
Its pretty simple,
After rooting,
1- Flash back the Stock kernel via Odin.
2- Flash the Zimage from your SD card via CWM, which you need to copy to your SD card before step 1 from your rooted kernel.
Regards.

You don't need to do point 1 do you? Can't you just flash the kernel from CWM app?
Also replacing the stock kernel will still not reset the count will it?
If you want to get yourself a usb jig, this will reset the binary counter and remove the triangle. Search the forums for usb jig, plenty info there
Yeah so only the jig will reset the counter.
I assume that the download mode would still show custom unless you reflash the stock kernel as above through cwm app on a cfroot phone?

One thing I'm a little hazy on...
Okay say I have stock phone with KF3 kernel. I root using CF-Root (KF3) kernel and everything is great apart from the yellow box. If I re flash the using the cwm app with the stock kernel again this will remove the yellow box, overwrite the cf-root with the samsung stock kernel (thus removing cwm) but still leave the phone in a rooted state?
In this instance would I be able to install a custom rom using the stock kernel that I now have OR do I need to re-flash (using Odin) the previous CF-Root kernel to get cwm back?
I haven't done this process as yet as I'm waiting for a jig to arrive to do it that way but I'm trying to understand why you'd want to put the stock kernel back (as is shown in numerous guides)?
Also if I use the jig and it removes the yellow box and resets the counter, does it factory reset the kernel or will I still have cwm on there? If the later, will the download mode show a custom rom/kernel or samsung rom/kernel?

JIG it and if you dont know how to jig it ebay e.g.Samsung s jig adapter or build it very simple if your int electronic soildering and the yellow triangle can void your warrenty in short there is a counter which will show samsung how many times youv flashed your fone with an unofficial kernel. hope this info helps.

[Q] Noob question (please dont flame)

Right ive been researching for the last 3 hours. And i think im ready to root and install custom rom on my phone when it arrives. But i would like some clarifaction on the steps:
Install cf-root using odin- this should give me root and CWM?
use usb jig to get rid of yellow triangle and reset counter if needed?
Download zip rom and flash through CWM?
Is that about it or have i missed something? seems too easy.
Cheers
Ricey
- Yes.
- Yes.
- Can't say.
- You need usb jig to reset the ROM counter.
- To remove the Yellow Triangle you need to flash back a Stock kernel via Odin and then flash the zImage of rooted kernel via CWM. No need to use Jig for that.
Regards.

yes the jig get rids of the yellow triangle and resets the counter.
i don't mind having the yellow triangle because I'll be flashing rom updates almost every month.
Installed custom rom 24 times yet not satisfactory results (((((((((((
I don't know if its even funny or unusual but yes i downloaded like every single rom i could and installed it on my galaxy s2 but most of them got installed and phone got stuck on start samsung logo. Now i got it working. Here are the details what i got on my phone information.I want to know if it is any good or i should try more downloading.lol
Phone : samsung galaxy s2 GT-19100
ANDROID VERSION : 2.3.3
kernel version : [email protected] 2
build number gingerbread.XWKE1
Did you wipe the phone before flashing?
Some ROMs require that you wipe the phone's userdata (data) partition before flashing, or it will be stuck at the Samsung logo repeatedly.
Did you wipe the phone after flashing?
Some ROMs does not allow you to wipe the phone's userdata (data) partition after you flash it, or it will be stuck at the Samsung logo boot loop.
Make sure to backup your efs folder in case you loose your imie. A very important step.

How do I go about doing this? And how do I restore if I do

Ok from what I can gather there seems o be two ways of flashing roms with the SGS2. Using Odin and cwm. What are the difference between them? Advantages, disadvantages? Sorry for the questions I just like to know my stuff before I take a plunge into something
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
The rom builder decides the method of flashing you just follow the given instructions .
Essentially no difference .

Clockwork Recovery, does not require a computer to update, change rom. You download the ROM which is in ZIP format. You can use your phone to download it. Then you boot into Clockwork Recovery and install it. You can also use ROM Manager or CWM App to install it as well.
ODIN requires a computer to install rom. ROM is in TAR format and you must boot your phone into Download mode, plug the phone to the computer, then flash the ROM using your computer via ODIN.
When using ODIN to flash a custom kernel, it increases the custom binary counter. A yellow exclamation triangle during the Samsung boot logo will appear if it is not there before.
When using Clockwork Recovery to flash a custom kernel, it does not increase custom binary counter. Since it does not increase the binary counter, there is no yellow exclamation triangle.

Hi Ricey.
Why don't you give the stock rom a chance.Get rid of some of the apps you don't want & replace others with better one's from the market. Have a play with the phone for a couple of weeks & get used to it before you root it.Who knows you might like the stock rom after all.

This aint my first android phone, its just my first samsung. I know from previous experience after 2 days i will be itching to flash ROM's, if for no other reason than because i can. Cheers for advice anyway.
right so to amend my original plan, i need to:
Install cf-root using odin- this should give me root and CWM?
Backup ESF folder using nitrality (does this allow the folder to keep permissions)?
use usb jig to get rid of yellow triangle and reset counter if needed?
Download zip rom and flash through CWM or ODIN depending on rom

I read that samsung has started to load a new bootloader which shows a red exclamation mark whenever one boots into recovery ,so will triangle away work also do you recommend using odin for flashing the stock rom or through recovery

Bootloop. Can't get into recovery.

Not sure what the CM updater uses, but I have tried to update with Philz, got stuck in an installation loop of the update itself.
Tried to use my jig and flash back to stock right now, got into download mode and was able to flash back to stock, but right now, I got into download with the jig, flashed stock ROM, and got a bootloop but am UNABLE to get into any recovery at all.
Pretty screwed up. Really need some suggestions here, guys.
Any ideas?!
I can get into download mode and flash via Odin (USB drivers installed via Windows 8)
Flashes successfully, installs stock recovery, reboots into bootloop.
No idea how to fix it.
Not a noob here. Nothing is working.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I had the same problem and I ended up finding a working CWM tar file that can be installed using ODIN and I was then able to boot into CWM fine.
This is the exact file name: recovery-cwmtouch-6.0.2.7-GTI9300
I don't remember where I downloaded it from, but if you Google the exact file name I am pretty sure you'll find it. Just flash it using Odin and you'll be good to go.

Well, now I'm even more f****ed than before, because I had a zero count, but after trying this, I got a custom count in download, and I still cannot get into recovery.
Nothing works.
Bye, bye warranty.
Edit:
The 6.0.2.7 version by MSKIP worked, but the updated one did not.
I got recovery, now I'll see if I can flash stock and recovery to get my counter back to zero.
Sorry to hear about the counter. I'd suggest rooting your device, installing Triangle Away, resetting your flash counter and then finally unrooting your device by installing stock ROM from SamMobile or such. That's the best route if you want your warranty to remain intact.

Hi all,
I am stuck in the very same problem as of today!
I don't know what to do!
One more weird symptom is that when I tried to charge the Note battery..it suddenly went to bootloop again!
The battery was 100% at the begining of that damn update process!
I don't know what to do..all suggestions are so welcomed.

[Q] Device not booting after using root triangle away

Hi,
I had cynogenmod 4.3 running on my s2. I wanted to remove warning triangle which comes while booting, so i bought root triangle away app and used it to reset the counter. But now my device doesn't boot, its getting stuck at samsung logo. I was able to go in download mode but not sure what to do. Pls help to bring my phone back .. :crying:
OK so if you can get into download mode then you're OK 99% of the time.
Flash a stock ROM, re root and then restore your backup.
Just a wile guess, is triangle away compatible with 4.3? Maybe run triangle away just after rooting while on the stock ROM still. Better yet, root by flashing philz kernel from stock JB recovery, that won't trigger the yellow triangle.

How to solve ? The answer is in that post of Hopper's you quoted; I.E flash a stock rom with Odin in DL mode.
Edit - Also, do not double post about the same issue. no need to create a thread about this issue and post to a 6 mth old thread about the same thing. You've been here more than long enough to know better than that.
