Nexus Prime - HTC EVO 3D

http://briefmobile.com/sprint-nexus-prime-coming-soon
Okay, everyone that wants to talk about jumping ship, do all of us die hard Evo 3D users a huge favor and keep your discussions in this thread. Might be a good way to keep general less cluttered (or not if everyone decides to make their own topic)

Good idea. While I think there should be a spot to talk about all the new Androids coming out, there doesn't need to be a billion threads about each phone.

really?. 5mp Cam is the deal breaker?
if it's the same cam that is in the GS2 I don't see a problem, because thats been getting some positive nods.

Those on screen buttons are a deal breaker for me. Waist of screen realestate and they make the phone bigger/uglier than it needs to be

this is a slightly more realistic deal breaker. I'm not in love with the on screen nav buttons either.

anyways, it's an awesome phone. but hey, every phone that comes out is going to be more and more awesome. riding my 3D out for a while, by the time another year goes by the nexus prime will be old news anyways, and there will be 100 threads like this in the Nexus Prime general section. can't jump on every better device that comes out, or I'd be buying a new phone every 3 months; I can't afford that, though some of y'all might be able to.

1. It's already been proven that high MP count doesn't always mean better quality pictures. It's better for higher resolution images but ultimately quality will be determined by sensors and components as well as compression used.
2. While the on screen buttons is somewhat understandable, having a honeycomb tablet myself you get quite used to it. Also It's a moot point because apps will be able to hide them if they so choose to utilize the whole screen.
3. I'm surprised no one has made any comments about the actual possibilities of this device. We all know at some point every carrier will get one but I'm sure most people expected Sprint to get one next year after they roll out LTE. Granted they could get an CDMA/LTE model with the LTE being inactive until it goes live ala what Verizon did with some of their mobile hotspots. It's also possible there is an unnanounced Wimax variant. What people tend to forget about is location. It was announced in Hong Kong and those variants were for that market and part of the world. It happens often with most products. They announce the ones that have reference to their location and then it's up to the branches in the other parts of the world to confirm or release their own information.
Either way it's a sleek and interesting phone. Not leaving my 3D but definitely looking forward to ICS.

I watched that youtube video and it appears this phone has the same "plasticy" build as some of the other galaxy phones.

I had the SGS2 also and took it back for the 3d.

For a lot of people jumping ship is only because of falling support for some devices. I understand the frustration about s-off on all the later Hboots. Even if Team Revolutionary would tweet if they are continuing support for these or not would be of great value to so many. If Htc phones become harder for people to s-off there will be a natural move over to other devices that Devs spend more time on like the Samsungs are getting. I have sold my Evo 3d because s-off on Hboot 1.49.0013 seems highly unlikely.
Htc unlock is truly only second best and doesn't allow for serious modding. So I follow this forum with interest to see if any change. At least still have my rooted/s-off Desire and play with wife's rooted SGS2 which with its support has convinced me to get the Samsung Nexus. Xda is such a cool community but not when you cant s-off your HTC.

One week till launch! Too many iPhone fan boys clogging the xda threads and trying to trash this phone . Dual core, sense 3.0, qHD screen , 1gb of RAM , 4gb internal . That is one beast ass phone. Oh and it does 3D just for giggles. With the devs here at xda this phone will by far exceed everyone's expectations .
BTW you don't I repeat don't have to use 3D its not a gimmick or the whole purpose just a simple feature way too many people are trying to say it is bad.

Agreed, what's the point of listening to people that have actually used the phone and have provided a critical assessment! No. I'd much rather read off the spec sheet and declare it AWESOME.

I been on my Instinct since 5 months ago since my Hero was destroyed :/. Anything is better than that so I wont be disappointed with the Evo 3D.
Awesome indeed!!!
I was fortunate enough to pick up an HTC seed unit last night and let tell you. THIS PHONE IS AWESOME!!!
Not even talking about the 3d... which upon first encounter was a bit tricky to get used to, but after shooting over 50 pictures/videos there's a science to getting it right.
The power of this phone lies in the dual core processor, the "super lcd" display, and updated software makes the phone run like a dream.
I was actually not very excited for this phone. I left android for WP7. (say what you may, but I use my phone a lot for work.) I can happily say the Evo 3d has brought me back into the fold...
But in short.. it's definately worth the wait!
What was your impression of the 2D pic quality (in relation to
4g?
Thanks

Honestly, the 2D picture quality is comprable to the Evo. I had a buddy take a picture of the exact same thing side by side on his Evo 4G. The quality is identical... unless you go full zoom on both devices, in which case the 4G is a winner, but not by a huge margin.
My biggest problem with the camera is the dedicated camera button. It is auto-focuses on light pressure and snaps the picture on the full press. It may just be because I have an otterbox case on it, but I find myself pushing so hard that I make the picture out of focus. Not a major gripe, as I'm learning to have a bit more... "finese" with the camera button. Ironically, I find the dedicated camera button to be EXTREMELY handy aside from my lack of initial nimbleness with it. Here are a few random 2D pictures I took if anyone wants to compare for themselves... and yes, very random pictures, I'm at work and don't have a lot to photograph..
Old Navy sign is no zoom / full zoom from the exact same distance. No zoom picture of a dairy queen cup... yup... I know...

[Q] 3D vs. Photon

I know this is the EVO 3D forum so opinions will lean that way but I'm going back to Sprint from T-Mobile. Should I get the 3D or wait a month and get the Motorola Photon? Which will be the better phone?
Depends on what you are looking for. If 3 matters obviously the 3d. If you are a sense fan then the 3d as well. However I kind of like that the photon has some of the things the 3vo is missing. For one the kickstand not deal breaker but it comes in handy and an 8Mp camera with 1080p video as opposed to 5mp with 720p. Now the big draw back. The motorolla is supposed to ship with a locked bootloader. So if you like to run roms you are rolling the dice. It may or may not be unlocked at a future date. Personally I trust the 3vo to be rooted much sooner than the photon. All that said check out the Samsung Nexus II as well. Looks to be a contender.
Can anyone dispute the claim made in this article about Motorola?

I'm just saying thats on the word of a dude on twitter and then it says at the end of the year and at the discrection of the carrier. Either way it is supposed to ship with a locked bootloader and you will likely be waiting a while. IMHO thats a crap shoot you may or may not get an unlocked bootloader. I wish it wasn't so I really like this phone better than the 3vo for my personal needs but what to do.
Isn't the 3vo going to be locked as well to start? I know HTC came out and said they will no longer lock bootloaders, but there seems to be no confirmation on 1.) If they will even allow the 3vo to be unlocked, and 2.) If so, when that will happen. It's all a crapshoot I guess.

Good point maximus I'm just going off past performance and HTC's official stance to disable the bootloaders. I trust them more to follow through than Motorola but alas this is all just my opinion.
It all depends on HTC I guess. There are going to be a lot of disappointed 3vo owners if they finally realize after a few weeks that the devs can't work miracles and unlock encrypted bootloaders. No custom ROMs or modifications unless HTC comes through.

OK. That's your opinion. But given that the appropriate devs have the Eng bootloader in hand already, I would expect root not too long after its released....assuming no encryption. But well see I guess.

There's going to be a massive flood of these things on eBay in about 4-6 months if they don't unencrypt it, and the "next" best thing comes along. I think part of the success of the evo4g was the development aspect of it. I just hope HTC realizes that. Could have great potential if they push an update out fairly quickly so there is an easy method to root.

As far as the Photon being locked it will be. Now As far as that memo, There are bits and pieces missing. However it's not the 1st Motorola has said it will no longer lock the phones down. in fact every time I have seen this pop up it's been almost the exact same thing, even the "by the end of the year." But I have also read multiple times that that statements means phones coming out at the end of the year the Photon is not included in that group. I believe if you look on XDA as well as the internet you can find that to be true.
I just want to make sure I get the best phone out there and don't miss out. I sign up with Sprint on the 23rd to take advantage of the switch over deal and will get the EVO 4g . The 3D comes out the next day and I read somewhere the Photon comes out in July possibly the 21st. I don't want to use a free exchange in the 1 month time period only to be disappointed I didn't wait for the other phone

The cool thing about the Photon is it has HDMI out AND Micro USB port (so it can charge while playing movies (using the two cables at once). As for the EVO 3D, it has a new technology that lets HDMI charge the phone while it's plugged into the TV for HDMI out, however NO tvs out currently support this feature, so you will have to buy an adapter.
Tegra 2 CPU (Photon) is weaker than Snapdragon (EVO 3D). They're both dual core and really fast, but EVO should be superior in most situations. Motorola has stated that the bootloader is unlocked, but some rumors have it that it's still locked down tight and uncrackable (see Droid 2). This definitely makes me lean towards HTC. One more thing, HTC seems to have alot more development behind it (far more than any other manufacturer (Samsung's catching up!). To be honest, your choices should be between the GSII (Samsung within for Sprint) or the EVO 3D.

That will not have any short term impact on HTC. The amount of us that would sell would have no effect on them.
However, it's people like us that most others go to for phone advice. Once as a company loses our trust and favor the fallout regarding future phones will be exponential.
The important thing is that it will hopefully not be encrypted.

I would stick with the Evo 3D. Once you play some 3D games or watch some 3D movies, you will see that it's an awesome feature to have the 3D. If you want better performance and don't care about the 3D features, you can install an AOSP rom. I think the Evo 3D is some of the best hardware out there right now.

Try the EPIC 4G Touch forums as most people only have one phone, and most of the people who frequent the EVO 3D forums have the EVO 3D and not the EPIC.
Good luck to you! I actually just traded back to the EVO because of personal tastes phone-wise but the SGSII is very very nice! I loved It's camera and SAMOLED cannot be beat!

looks like im gonna just stick with it
I've have both. Evo 3D is my choice. In fact I gave my SG S2 to my neice for Christmas. Evo 3D is nicer. Not as snappy but the hardware is real quality.
I recently picked up the Evo 3d, and my dad got the E4GT. I've played with both, and while I will say that out of the box the E4GT does feel much more snappy, the combination of the size, "premium" feel (build quality), ROM options, features, and just overall fun, the Evo 3d wins all day. Plus, I am not a huge fan of Touchwiz, and I love Sense, so it's a no brainer for me. Good luck with your decision!
The epic touch 4g is huge compared to the Evo 3D. I actually wish the 3D was closer in dimensions to the evo 4G. I prefer the wider device, vs taller. The ET4G is both wider, and taller than the 3D.
But to your trade question, you will probably need to pony up some $$ with the trade, as the ET4G has a higher resale value at this time.
@OP I am glad you stuck with the 3D. Here in Atlanta at the Sprint service center they are constantly having issues with the SGSII dropping calls, GPS issues, and random reboots. people have been coming in and trading for the E3D.
I recognize that this may not be across the board, but when Sprint's own techs all have E3Ds and say they wouldn't touch a SGSII, that is an indicator to me.

While my experience is just anecdotal, but my wife and I have the same issues as the ET4G users, and I have a Evo 3D, and she has a Evo 4G. It's completely tower related, for me though, because if I leave the tower covering my house, I have almost no issues. But at home (my work is also on the same tower), I don't receive calls, sometimes texts don't go through, sometimes have no data, dropped calls, and I get random reboots. I'm in the Atlanta area.

Unfortunately, all companies are like this now. I remember HTC had dust under the screen issues with the Hero. Issues with the covering on the buttons coming off. The Evo 4G had light leakage issues, stuck pixels, and the digitizer not attached firmly to the body of the phone (usually only one side was affected). But, it looks like HTC has spent more time on QC on their hardware lately, when I look at my 3D. Now, when we pick a phone, we must choose the one that looks to be the lesser of all evils.
That's pretty much what I did... gave mine to someone I know that wanted the 3D and just paid the $199 for the upgrade on their account and swapped it out. Honestly I hated that I even wasted my upgrade on the 3D after a while... I think I used the 3D features maybe a week or two before forgetting all about em. IMO, pretty much everything was an upgrade but it's all personal preferences. Had I not been having some medical issues right after I bought it I would've returned it though.
And to the person that says Samsung cares about quantity over quality, let's not sit here and act like HTC has done anything to improve the issues these phones have had since the Evo came out. You'd think by now they'd be able to make a phone without the massive light leakage at the bottom but they're yet to even try to fix it. And let's not forget the debacle with the touch pro where probably 1 out of every 3 of them had the keyboard to go dead. And I won't even start on the tons of problems we had with the Thunderbolts. All of these companies are about the money first, that doesn't mean they have to sacrifice anything. Hell no one is more about money than Apple but they still consistently have the best build quality out there.
And personally between the last HTC phones ive had, i've had more problems than i've had with the GS2. But hey, that's just me.

The Epic 4G is just too damn wide. I almost bought it before I held it. The Evo has great dimensions. Plus the low resolution will be annoying.
I have a Nexus S too and the resolution isn't great even on the 4" screen. It'll be awful on 4.5.

Great News for soon to be EVO LTE Owners

Makes me feel much better!

Nice. Wonder if that's permanent, and what's the status on bootloader, and custom recovery.

I wouldn't be surprised if HTC patches that before the release of the Evo LTE.

I agree this does make me feel better but since the 3d now has plenty of working ICS builds i'm starting to think i might not NEED my evo lte. Considering dumping the preorder. I don't see much difference between the two now that i have ICS. Any thoughts? LTE non nonexistent , NFC (at least where i'm at) is also non nonexistent.
I do like the slightly bigger battery, and krait seems power friendly.

I'm buying it, but only because it's the next big thing. I'll probably order it this weekend, and sell my EVO 3D next weekend with all of it's accessories to pay for it.
I like the larger battery. The processor is a huge upgrade. Sense 4.0 with ImageSense will definitely be useful (I have a daughter and I'm always taking pictures when we're out. Although, I just bought a $1000 DSLR, but I don't like dragging it everywhere with me). The fact that this model has an SD card slot, AND 16GB onboard is a big selling point for me as well. 4.7" screen gives me more viewing area (I'd get a note, but I don't think I could EVER get out of having HTC Sense).
Yeah i forgot about the camera that is another big plus. Something else i've always wondered was the B!tch Everyone has for the non removable battery. On my OG Evo i had 6 batteries i carried around with me all the time. I hated that. Why not just buy one of those recharge packs and if you need battery in a pinch use that. So many ppl i've seen are throwing this under the bus because of not being able to remove the battery.

Its permanent. There is also a temp custom clockwork recovery that they are using to flash ROMs. They have a couple guys who have S-off on their phones but its still a WIP to get the bootloader unlocked. Looks really good for EVO LTE owners so far.
I am still on the fence about getting it. Due for my last yearly upgrade on June 1, but with the ICS leaks and the impending official release, I think I will be good for at least a little while longer. This phone getting root would drive my decision a little further to one side or the other.
Another point I forgot to mention is ACTUALLY having a true Beats capable phone. Not kinda works/kinda doesn't.
i will be glad to stop seeing n00bs refer to my phone as a "3vo"
i hope i won't be too rEVOLTEd about my choice

was really hoping they would hold off on releasing this for a few more days...I for one will emphasize to the Sales rep at my local store that i DO NOT want him/her to take it upon themselves to force an update before I walk out the door.
never accept OTA updates on phones.
i wait for trusted devs to tell me what i need to do

[Q] About to ditch the EVO 3D, where to go next?

So the road for me and my Evo 3D has been a short one, i've laughed and nearly cried over updates, parts of my phone which don't work (3D) and i've finally had enough of this piece of sh** and i'm off to grab a nice quad core sgs3 because i've also had enough of HTC sh**ting on me, i'd like some new sh** from samsung please.
On top of that I do like the One X
Does anyone have any relevant reason why i shouldn't make the switch to either of these belters? Besides the fact that i'd be running two contracts at the same time? As my evo has still got around 19 months left on it.

First off, don't blame HTC for updates, they already made it. Blame sprint. HTC gave them the ics update months ago.
And I say that you should get the one x. Because on Samsung, touchwiz is nice, but you end up missing sense afterwards.

I see your in London, is that correct? What is the shooter like over there on your network? I would think all this phone really ever needed was a decent 3g network and a dose of ics. I have been switching between myn's 2 roms (gb\ics) and meanrom and i think it still performs very well. If i had to switch i might lean towards samsung based on this article....http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/08/...s-iii-in-the-us-is-giving-samsung-a-backbone/
If you want lots of updates: Galaxy Nexus.

He's on GSM; you can't blame sprint. HTC is slow to update on all carriers. Lack of updates aren't HTC's only problem though, their other problem is using ridiculously proprietary hardware (so AOSP based roms are basically impossible) and the fact that they lock down their bootloaders and give you a really crappy alternative unlock.
I've moved on to the galaxy nexus, and I'm never going to get another HTC phone again.

Totally disagree. The Evo 3d is not a piece of ****. 3D works fine. HTC is not to blame here. The phone is as good as it was when you bought it. No need to insult it and HTC and the EVO 3d community now. HTC doesn't owe you anything.
There are other phones out there that are faster, bigger screens and so on. You are welcome to move onto anyone one of them. Go for it.

Sounds like you got lots and lots of money. So, you need the best, biggest and baddest phone out there. Must be nice.
I bought this phone outright. Never had a contract. Just reload my sim card and I'm good to go. I love the EVO 3d. Finally got Turge's ICS rom running great on it.
I wish you well in whatever forums you end up in. Peace dude.

Don't move anywhere expecting a problem free experience.
But its up to you.
Honestly I say screw the usual suspects & buy the Asus Padphone & all the extras.
