phone randomly shuts off whenever i run the gps navigation app, is this happening to other people as well?
which navigation app do you use...
if you use google maps did u upgraded to latest from market...
Are you charging at the same time? Might be an overheating issue?
When I charge my phone in the car I lose GPS all together. Does this happen to anyone else? GPS works flawless when my phone is not plugged in.

Do you have Juice Defender installed?
Just got the T-Mobile Amaze 4G on 11/23/11; downloaded SportyPal (tracks your run/jog using GPS). While using Sportypal, during a 3-mile jog, the phone shut down once (completely off); then during a 2-mile walk, the phone re-booted. I called T-Mobile (on 11/25/11), they said it's a known issue (it shutting down) and there will be a software update issued in the future to fix it. I just switched from the T-Mobile HD2 (kept overheating at high use times while charging and re-booting); I'm in the 20-day grace period with the Amaze and wondering if I should trade it for another device; any thoughts anyone?

I just received mine on the 19th and had a connection issue. After the OTA nothing changed so I took ine back within my 15-day Grace period and got a new one...I would say if it continues take it back, you lose nothing and get another brand new phone...My thoughts.

You have a 14 day return or exchange period (30 days in California) not 20 days anywhere. If you are having issues with your device and you take it back to the store there will be a $50 restocking fee unless you get a nice manager who will allow you to do an even exchange and waive it. If you go the warranty route then you will get either a new or refurbished device but you will pay for the shipping $5 or $20 depending on if you have Premium handset Protection or not. Your best bet would be to go into the store and speak with the manager or lead sales associate and tell them you are having issues with the device and need to do an exchange for another one. Make sure they notate your account and put what the reasons were for your visit to the store that day just in case you have any further problems. Hope this helps.

Thanks. I did on OTA update HTC pushed and it didn't do it again...until today. But T-Mobile said they were aware of the issue, so I didn't think it was my handset. I got it via mail (from the T-Mobile rep) so not sure if store will take it back, it's been 12 days so far.

EDIT: i had a brain fart and did not search first so i apologize. what i will do is update this thread and monitor for any data connection issues.
just thought i'd share my ordeal trying to upgrade a line to this new phone. this whole thing took 3 thunderbolts and several useless verizon sales/techs (i will never purchase directly from a vzw store again, the staff i dealt with at 2 corp stores was completely inept).
purchase 1: i purchased a thunderbolt and upgraded my line in store and everything is working/provisioned according to the tech. i don't realize i am missing texts and data until after i get back to work since the tech said it would "fully activate" over the next few hours (wtf..... but ok, new device/service and the sales guy wanted to set my expectations low). 2 trips back to the store for a total of 3.5 hours and 2 new sims and they cant get data or text working on the phone.
purchase 2: new verizon store closer to work. talked to the sales guy and informed him of the issues i had prior. he says no problem, they must have had some issues. we definitely wont have them here. i tell him fine i will upgrade but i am not leaving until voice, data, and text are working 100%. he cant get text or data to activate either so he says i can leave and he can call me when its done (little problem with not having a phone though to receive the call....) end result they return the phone an and i am dinged the restocking fee because they dont want to return as a problem.
purchase 3: bestbuy..... my expectations already set super low, i ask them if they have problems activating tb's on upgrades..... they say no, but it could take a while to do the whole process. i told them of the issues i ran into at other stores and they said did the tech reset the phone or factory reset the phone after the initial activation? (bingo! only power resets through the gui although the sales guys at both vzw stores said they factory reset).
for anyone running into data activation/data drop issues, factory reset the phone (i had to do it twice). and it should be solid after that. i have been up and running for the last few hours without issue.
my tb is set to cdma + lte/evdo auto.
tl;dr: data problems? do a factory reset. 3g data/text/voice has been solid after this process. PITA? yes, but it seems to work.
So 24 hours later and there doesn't appear to have been a data drop. There are still some weird fc's with the browser though. And the market has fc'd as well.

I am surprised you paid the restocking fee. I would have told them to kiss my ass.
Sadly enough, the guys at Best Buy Mobile don't always get enough credit, sometimes they do have some real idiots working there, but some of those people know ten fold what a guy at a local single carrier shop will.
BBYM, since I used to work for one, makes you take detailed training before you are supposed to work in the department, doesn't mean its followed, but if someone has been in the department for awhile they will have.
Most carrier stores don't have a lot of training, if they do, it is only about their company, not 6-7 different companies, between post and pre paid.
The restocking fee was charged because they returned it as customer deactivated, not a programming issue. I had to call customer support from my cell to get the restocking fee credited to my account. So all told I lost 1.75 at that store (plus the time I spent there).
I originally went to BB to return something, not walk out with a new phone. I got sucked in by the cute girl who chatted me up while processing my return. I ended up keeping the return and getting a new phone... lol.

So I patiently waited for ICS. Upgraded via Kies air or w/e it's called.
Ever since my phone has been a piece of crap.
First, the battery life became laughable. My phone was only lasting 6 or 7 hours where it had normally lasted me all day.
Then, it stopped playing my music. Win Amp would not open. Google Music couldn't recognize the files. The gallery still worked and when I downloaded the files from Kies the songs were fine.
Finally, it stopped charging correctly. My phone is now completely dead and will not charge.
What is going on? Do I need to just send my phone in and get another? I have insurance and everything on it, but I hate having to go through phones like this. It's wasteful.
Update: If I hold it a certain way it will charge. (Ghetto)
Still, it's rebooting itself often, even when I havent even unlocked it from booting up.

if your phone has issues charging even while is off there's something wrong with the hardware/usb plug, are you using the original charger/cable that came with? if you get it charged , you should try updating it again and see if it was a bad download of the update.

I had Verizon for years. They always did great things, but were pretty expensive. My bill was around $120 after taxes.
I switched to AT&T for this phone and because it was a bit cheaper (on paper, my phone bill is still $105), but since the ICS upgrade everything has gone to hell. AT&T is no help... at all. They suggest I send it into Samsung for repair. They don't want to replace it because the phone isn't physically damaged... even though I pay extra for the insurance that says my phone can be replaced if lost, stolen or damaged... they won't do anything.
I'm glad I didn't sign a contract with them. I swore off Samsung when I was in college because I've never owned a Samsung device that didn't become a hassle after a few months.

Yeah. Most cell phone plans are 79.99, but adding on data and insurance drags your bill up.
It's super cheap to add on lines though. When my brother moves here I can add him to my plan for ten bucks and he's going to split it with my, knocking my bill down to 60 or so bucks for each of us. Hopefully his girlfriend will jump on the plan too.

Because that's what my cousins do to get their boost mobile phones to charge with their Shell station chargers after their phone has been washed one too many times.
I feel your pain having had the same problem. Turned out to be a bad battery. A quick visit to an AT&T outlet proved the point and facilitated picking up a new battery. Do, however, make sure you've got the OEM cable and charger, that makes a big difference. And needless to say, the OEM battery.

Yes, that is what you need to do. You are obviously experiencing exceptional problems. If you have insurance, this is a no-brainer. What's wasteful is the amount of time and energy you're expending on a lost cause.
Hello,
Just wanted to share my experience with my Evo. First I love this phone. I sit next to an apple guy all day and just laugh and laugh and laugh. But the phone is only amazing when it actually turns on. Starting last Saturday - I experienced power issues, where my phone would just turn off - and would only turn back on if I introduced a power source, AC or USB didn't matter. Then after about 4 of these episodes, my phone just stopped wanting to turn on at all, with our without a power source. Walked into a Sprint retail shop - basically was called a retard for not buying insurance, and was told I was out of luck. I told them that's crap - I've been a sprint customer for 10 years, blabalabla do something or I walk next door to Verizon. So he called his buddy at a Sprint service store. I was informed of a known issue that involved our phones - but no details on what that issue was, either they didn't know or didn't want to say. Anyway, I was told I could RMA my phone for $35 and then add insurance afterwards. Next day - new phone - done. No one knew at sprint, or was willing to admit what the issue actually was.
1. Anyone know what the issue actually is? Sprint claimed "Software", not accepting updates, basically all software. IMO, you need power before your software loads, so how could it be a software issue?
2. If it is indeed a battery discharge issue - I would imagine stripping the phone and replacing the battery should fix it? Is it solved in certain hardware versions?
Never heard of this issue. My EVO 3D was replaced within the first week I had it because the battery died and wouldn't turn back on again being charged or anything. Turned out to be an issue with all of them. Took it into a Sprint store (mind you I have TEP and it was a week old phone) and they just gave me a new one.
I call all my customers retards regardless if they have TEP or not.

I call the representatives in the stores retards. For whatever reason, every store that I've been to in Central Florida have people working there that know absolutely nothing about their phones. I made a sale for a representative one time while I was killing some time looking at the phones that were out. All I had to do was amaze the customer with the features of the phone, that's all.

I also just RMA'ed my first day release EVO 4G LTE due to light leakage from the home button. When I originally brought the phone in to a service store on July 18, the Sprint service tech said it was clearly defective, but I would still have to pay the $35 admin fee for Sprint to process the RMA. I wouldn't have to pay anything if I did it directly through HTC, but it would take up to 2 weeks to get a replacement. So last week I decided to just pay the $35 and have Sprint send me a replacement with the return envelope. However, this time, the tech said that the light leakage was a "cosmetic defect" that doesn't affect the phone performance and he refused to create an rma. I said that was retarded and asked for the manager, who promptly approved the e-ticket to rma the device.
The Sprint store customer service experience at the Greenfield, WI location can be so frustrating. We've been with Sprint forever, so I don't know if it is any better at AT&T or Verizon. But it makes me consider switching.
One of the Evo's in my family was defective upon opening the brand new phone (dead line in the digitizer grid) and they wanted $35 to replace it--absolutely absurd! Sprint's customer service is going down the drain, fast.

Sprint shouldn't be charging for hardware defects. If you bought it through sprint, you should inform the rep that it is sprints responsibility to replace hardware components that fail. Rep's at stores are night the brightest, they just have to meet their quota per week. I wouldn't go through them. I almost always go through retentions. They are the ones who know what they are doing, and have the power to credit money or perks to your account.
Whenever you have a problem with your phone, be it hardware failure, loss in service, want to upgrade early, replace with a similar model, call retentions first. The number can be found be looking online.
For those who have already paid the $35, you could call retentions and be credited that amount towards your next bill. Just tell them what happened, what you want, and they most likely will be able to help you.
p.s, retentions may ask you to take your phone to a store to have a sales rep look at it and determine if it's damaged from a hardware defect. This usually happens for claims like "my phone is bending" (happened to me). Theyre reasoning is that they want to make sure it's a defect before offering a free replacement. If the sales rep tries to tell you that you have to pay the $35, just tell explain the situation, "retentions just needs someone to determine if its defective, and then they'll replace it for free", and be on your way.
Hope this helps
Cheers

That sounds a lot like what happened to my phone. I plugged it into my computer via USB and it basically went totally dead. Difference is, when I took it to a Sprint store, they told me it was a known issue and gave me a new phone.
Wait why the hell is sprint charging for hardware defects? I thought without TEP all hardware defects are supposed to be a free replacement for the first year? This is how it was done for me for the first year without insurance on my OG EVO and touch pro 1.

I love this. The phone has a one year warranty with sprint. End of story. I'm on EVO number 5 since June and each time I walk in, the sprint nerd says they hope I bought the insurance..I did but quickly remind them there warranty is free and is for one year. After that they talk to there manager , they order me a replacment phone. The last time the manager gave me a new one. Never paid a penny.

The amount of incorrect information in this thread makes it pitiful to call my self a Sprint customer. Without insurance you have to pay the $35 fee to get a phone replaced and fixed if it uses a part. It's not "RMA"ing it either, Sprint has their own in house service and repair program. If you have a hardware defect and you don't want to pay, send it to HTC because that is where your one year warranty is. With HTC. Not Sprint. They are a business, not a soup kitchen. And no, they won't replace your phone for cosmetic defects. Not a soup kitchen. If you have any issues with your phone out of the box, you have that 14 day return and exchange period to get it resolved without cost.
This thread is mostly about people taking responsibility for their own products and realizing everything isn't a handout. $35 for an entire replacement phone, which retails at over $500 is a hell of a deal. In fact, its usually cheaper than actually having the insurance, which is now $11 a month.
The way it has always been done for me with hardware defects with no damage caused by me in the first year (e.g. touch pro slide out keyboard flimsy keyboard ribbon cable, faulty screen on OG EVO) was that I walk into a sprint repair center, they see the problem, request a replacement device, no charge. They always tell me not to worry about fees since they just send it back to manufacturer and it's neither my problem nor Sprint's. I've been doing it like since 07 up until my last case in early 2011. Other folks around xda have been doing it the same exact way, so I'm guessing something has changed recently... which sucks.

Hello,
Just wanted to share my experience with my Evo.

This is exactly what happened to my first Evo LTE about a month after I got it. I ended up getting a replacement from best buy.

For what its worth, I'm on my 4th EVO lte... I do pay the very cheap like 7 or 8 bucks for tep.
First LTE, was bent after a week, called 611, they said go to store, I said no (i repair phones and laptops and TVs) the techs are idiots, and you guys don't have any parts yet.. got new phone via mail 2 days later.
2nd lte, had bleeding light on bottom near home button, same deal when I called 611, same deal, got new phone in 3days.
3rd LTE, bottom left of screen rippled with slight movement, also speaker phone was borked. Again, told 611 their guys were morons and even called to see if they stocked replacement screen and speaker, so same thing, called 611, got new one, this time they on back order.. got sprint replacement in about week and half..
4th is ok, no issues, cept for hboot 1.19 which unless ur incompetent, is no biggie, wow, one simple command line to flash what ever..
Now I did have to argue a bit with phone support , they advised me to call asurion, I said no, its a hardware defect yada yada.. when ever they wernt working with me on phone, I asked what my early termination fee was, then I was shipped a phone..
U just gotta be Stern, not unreasonable with those guys

Wait why the hell is sprint charging for hardware defects? I thought without TEP all hardware defects are supposed to be a free replacement for the first year? This is how it was done for me for the first year without insurance on my OG EVO and touch pro 1.

Well - in defense of Sprint - I did not buy the phone there. But regardless any retailer should be able to RMA something with a defect - sort of like how car dealerships work. At least they offered the add on insurance since I "activated" a new phone. Now that I think about it - whats the activation cost of new phones lol ... like something around 35...
Nick
I have a stock Sprint Evo 4G LTE (hardware 003) that I got from Amazon Wireless on Sept 1st. Never dropped or got it wet.
A couple weeks ago the phone wouldn't turn on after going to sleep. I was able to reset it holding the Power button down and the problem went away.
Then it happened again.
Yesterday, it went bad. I can reset it if I hold power button long enough, but then after a while it just dies again. I pulled SD card and did factory reset and turned off Fast Boot and Battery Saver, all to no avail. If I set it to never go to sleep (Display options) and never turn off display when charging, I can use it - sometimes for an hour or two, sometimes for ten minutes, but inevitably the screen turns black. Often it happens when I plug it in charger, although sometimes it just charges. Basically, the phone is unusable.
I think it started happening after one of the updates from HTC.
So, can someone help me. I do not have TEP and I need to know what my options are.
It really looks to me like some OS glitch. Is there a known fix for that ? I found a lot of people with this issue but no mention of cause or fix.
If I have to get it repaired, should I send it to HTC or try Sprint repair center ? Any ideas of the HTC warranty repair center trustworthiness ? I would hate to send the phone to them, wait for a couple of weeks and get a runaround in the end.
If I go to Sprint, what should I expect ? As I understand the minimum repair charge is around $35.
Thanks !
Take it to Sprint. They likely will replace it. Maybe charge 35$. Be leery of HTC repair. I have read they have really been jerking the int'l one X customers around, since those customers aren't tied to a carrier and can't return to a carrier.

Thanks. I will try that, I would rather pay $35 if the alternative is to be without a phone for two weeks. Is there any idea on what is causing the issue ?
Are you s-off?? Are you rooted?? What recovery are you running?? What all have you tried?? Have you tried running an ruu??

Same here...
I'm having the same issue with my EVO LTE. I'd be curious to know if anyone has any idea what is happening. I've looked around online and it seems to have happened to a number of people.
I actually had to send my EVO back to HTC a couple months ago because I was getting pixel bleed on the screen. It took about a week and a half for them to fix and send it back. Unfortunately, it took another 3 weeks for them to register the ESN with Sprint, so I had to wait for that to actually be able to activate my phone. This was all accompanied by unbelievably bad customer service from Sprint in the interim. The only good that came out of it was that I eventually became so irate that they let me out of my contract.
So I'm leary of sending it back to HTC again. But I also don't feel I should have to pay Sprint to look at the phone and then replace it. Between the phone issues, the wimax and LTE that never came and the $10/month I paid to not have it, the awful 3G speeds, and the ditching of premier customers, I've pretty much reached the end of my rope with HTC and Sprint. And this is after being a loyal customer for 13 years.
Sorry for the rant, I can just empathize with your situation.
The other day my padfone died, however Asus support was able to help me bring it back. Since then it has not had 4G LTE, just regular 4G. I don't know what happened, but I suspect over heating of the device.
I use my phone in a window carrier while I drive to keep it as hands free as possible. However, it is in direct sunlight in Texas heat. So with a temperature monitor, I see it exceed 150 degrees F.
I wonder if that is the cause of death earlier this week. Has anybody else see their phone get above 140 while using it? It doesn't seem to charge while in use in my car.

Mine did similar thing twice since June . My phone ran pretty hot . Then without warning My cellular and data radios completely died . At&t replaced it first time within the 15 day trial with a new one. The 2nd time At&t is replacing it with a refurbished. Will be getting it in a few days. The corporate store I took it to had seen this issue on 3 other units. They think either a bad batch of phones were released or Asus has a serious hardware issue that needs to be redesigned. They don't recommend the padfone to their customers.
If it happens again to my phone I'm paying off my att next balance, throwing it in the garbage and changing to another phone brand.
I noticed my LTE modem fried, but the GSM modem still works. Sadly, mine fried in 16 days and I had to call for a replacement. I used *#*#4636#*#* and set the radio to GSM only. It allowed it to work until my replacement arrived. Unfortunately I am stuck in a new two year contract and cannot easily swap my device. Let me know how the third device works out.
