Slow data speeds. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I didn't want to put this in the Dev section even though it might become a dev thread. Basically I have been conducting several tests throughout the past few weeks I have has my phone here is what I have found. (Units for speed tests are from speakeast.net/speedtest so whatever the units there are is what I am referring too)
my average down speed is around 5 down. Peaking at around 8-8.5
It is common for me to get more in the realm of 3-4
I have an infuse as well and the average speed on it is around 10 peaking at 14.3
I have tested and tested over and over swapping sim and running test withing the same few minute time span and I kept swapping to try and rule out network load errors. I have also tried at almost every hour of the day. when I wake up when I go to bed, late night etc. Also in the same location. I have done everything I can to try and rule out something other than the phone itself. I even tried a different GSII and I got the same results. As for ROM I tried it with everything. UnNamed, Cognition, serendipity. I am beginning to think either AT&T capped the modem like they did on the captivate. Or there is a problem with the phone itself. I would love to hear everyone else's results. (State if you are in a HSPA+ area or not) and if there are any devs looking into this and I am willing to help with testing. I am no dev unfortunately.
If anyone has suggestions or wants any more information let me know.

I'm in an HSPA+ area, according to att. I'm in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The best I have seen is 3 down. That was on my SGS II. Best I saw on the captivate in the same area was just over 2.
Sent from my Galaxy S II (i777)

My average download is 7-8 on my attix I would get 9-10 hopefully an update will come out soon to fix this if it even is a problem

im in Houston with my captivate i got 3 to 4 mb down and now with my SGS2 like 1 to 2 and im in HSPA + area

I just hit 18000 DL and 3500 upload

CM7 for the E3D. Where is it?

I'm under the assumption that you guys were on top of the latest cm7 nightlies. After looking at the cm7 site I can't find it? Not supported? I'm coming over from a nexus s 4g soon.
pwnd by my ns4geee yo
CM7 is still in alpha and will stay in alpha since they're working on CM9, your best bet is MIUI
Cm9 (based off ics) is in the works as stated above...
Miui is great... also.. there are a couple cm7 builds by very good devs
So the team decided to skip over cm7 and go str8 to cm9 for the e3d. Sounds good lol I just figured since the original evo was fully supported that the e3d would be too. Thanks guys.

Remember that you lose 4g if you use aosp just to let you know cause I had the ns4g and it was fully supported on there but since this is not a nexus phone its to the point where it probably won't happen for a while but remember if you use 4g a lot might as well camp around for the galaxy nexus

Well I'm trading my nexus s and 30$ for an evo 3d. and if cm doesnt support 4g then that's a pass. The main reason I'd like an evo is of there's one thing HTC does well, its radios. I tether. Alot. A more stable 4g connection is key for me here and my nexus doesn't cut it for me. (My ping fluctuates between 80-200 Ms. This makes battlefield 3 play like poop lol I'm sure there are other awesome roms too. I've just been using cm7 on my nexus and its like a drug you can't put down. No matter what roms I tried none provided the stability, speed, and customization cm7 provides. But I digress, I get bored of my gadgets easily. I've only had this nexus since October
On to new grounds.

My download speeds are fine. The highest I've gotten is 13mbps. Upload always capped at 200kb. The issue for me is the stability of my ping. It fluctuates way too much too much. Its a pain to play battlefield 3. Even finding low ping servers doesn't work. Ill get crappy stutters. Download speeds are absolutely fine though. Also before anyone asks i can't obtain a real cable connection at the moment so I have to resort to tethering.
pwnd by my ns4geee yo
I would suggest you get dsl or cable if you want good enough ping to play fps games. Internet from any wireless provider will never have a stable ping.

Wrong. Just tried with my buddies tmo gs2 a few weeks ago and his ping floats around 60-70. Perfect.

signal fluctuation issue *fixed*

so, over the past 2 weeks, the data on my phone would randomly drop out completely, then kick back in a few seconds later. it gradually got worse & decided to call verizon. beforehand, i tried the battery pull & then tried cleaning the antenna contacts(didn't work). i ended going through 5 service calls that did not go anywhere. they're supposed to call me back tomorrow & mentioned a phone exchange if the issue persists.
(btw i've been using the 2750 extended battery)
anyway, i decided to remove the extended battery & try going back to the normal for the hell of it. and that fixed the issue.... so now i just need to replace the extended battery door. i feel dumb for not trying it sooner, but also wonder why verizon never mentioned trying it.
I don't have an extender door and was having this issue. I reset the phone pulled the battery took my sim out and ad card. Put all back together and so far so good. Not sure what fixed it though.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using XDA
I have the extended battery and while I don't have signal issues I might try soldering the contacts on the door a little to raise em up.
Also, do you use a case? That might help hold it together tighter.

The data issues many were having have seemed to be fixed, I haven't had my data drop for some time now.

I am expecting my fifth Rezound in 3 weeks because of data issues. There seems to a lot of people having the same issue lately.
If your near an lte area your phone is consistently trying to search for a signal, and when its searching it's sending information to make sure the phone is supposed to be activated on the network. That's the downfall of Long Term Evolution.

Speed up Android 90%

I saw this in Reddit today and thought I'd post it to the EVO forum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1987032
Yes i saw this on reddit too, have you tried it out yet?
I tried it out, there is actually a speed boost. Although I think my battery suffered a bit.
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
nice find! i need to start checking out other threads/sections on xda.. i always just stay in what ever phone i have at the time thread.. there's alot of other cool issh goin on else where :good:
I too saw that on Reddit. I tried it out on my Evo running Stock w/ Goodies, and on my Nexus 7. Installed, rebooted, and played a bit to let things "settle in", and there is definitely a noticeable improvement in speed and responsiveness, on what were already pretty swift and smooth devices.
I haven't tried it yet, but will soon. If this works out in the long run, hopefully the devs can put this in their roms. I wonder if Google knows about this...
Anyone do a quadrant on this yet? I'm curious if it really works or its just a placebo. Also, how is battery life?

Haven't looked much into this but improvements of this nature usually have a decent drawback.... Ie battery life...

Directions seem to be hard to come by in that thread... I installed the apk in it, and also flashed a zip file that was referenced in one of the last pages. Doesn't seem to make a bit of difference... As a reference, though, I benchmarked a 6700 on basically stock JellyBean a few weeks back. Still have the screen shot from it saved.

Come on guys, running a benchmark to see if it works is a total waste of time. I can run the same benchmark 10 different times and get10 totally different scores without applying any mods at all.

This is better:
Enter this in a terminal to see if its working.
watch -n 1 cat /proc/sys/kernel/random/entropy_avail
3000+ & its doing its job. (Per that thread)

tried it on my Sony S, doesn't really appear to do anything... then agian I wasn't having lag issues...
Also, this shouldn't affect quadrant... just random lags
Cyanogenmod himself posted in that thread saying that there is something going on, but he doesn't know what exactly it is... However there is a mild speedup according to him. He just doesn't know why

From what little I know about entropy pools, the larger this pool (a pool of random actions right?) is & the faster your programs/inputs are able to access it. The more responsive they'll be.
I could be very wrong but this is what I assume is happening here.
This pool that continusly dumps & fills for however many seconds is about 300-400 nomally on our device. With the tweak the pool is 3000+, I think the tweak also increases the speed of the refresh to access the pool by 1 second.
So 1 second (every second this -> 4 digit figure randomly fills & dumps) + 3000+ accessable random numbers (actions) vs. undetermined number of seconds & a pool avg or 300-400.
Again I'm guessing. I haven't spoke of this since my Eee PC & that might've been for a kernal.
I imagine it as a hand/s repeatedly reaching for a few hundered chocolates spinning in a whirlwind (before) & a ton of random chocolates with even faster hands reaching for a few thousand chocolates spinning in the whilrwind (after).

I feel like my signal sucks

I just got S4 2 days ago I sitll have 12 days to exchange it for a new one not refurb.
I had iphone 5 before gave it to my mom and I live in NYC today when I was coming back from Queens to Brooklyn I would be stuck with 1 bar in a lot of places where before I had 2-3
call quality and everything is perfect however I can see that I don't get the same service as I did before.
I don't know if it helps much I did few sreenshots. On these 2 I don't 1 bar but with bar I think it's somewhere around -111 something very close to that I don't remember exact numbers.
How can I test better? someone help me please , like maybe some sort of app to test it out in various places?

CDMA field test or Advanced Signal Status are great apps for checking your signal strength.

Well I didn't have a single dropped call. Just in different places I would usually at least see 1 bar more then I do have now.

The signal strength you are seeing is related to the LTE tower you are currently connected to. Use an app called "signal check lite", download it from the app store, it will show you your actual CDMA signal strength.
Advanced signal status is another good one to check as well. But your are right, -111 is about 1 bar. -120 is about as bad as it can get before dropping to nothing. -60ish is perfect but you will rarely see that on a Samsung device unless you actually climb the tower. Best I usually see on my s4, is mid 90s which is awful in my book compared to the mid 80s I get in the same location on my htc rezound. So you aren't alone out here. If there is another phone you like, I would get it. Wish I could still dump mine. I miss constant AND FAAAAST 4g on my Rez. :banghead:

How fast is verizon for you?

I was wondering what people were getting as far as mbps with Verizon in their area. Like what is the highest you have got. I was using my wifi and did a text this one day and got like 10. Something and I wanted to try my data on Verizon. I was very shocked to see the speed on got seeing as how I wasn't at one time get any more then maybe 10mbps. Well I was so shocked on what I got that I took a picture to show people and wanted to see if anyone got around this or more or close to it.
