Will using non-sony chargers damage the phone in anyway? - Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini, Mini Pro, Xperia Pro, A

I bought a charger from ebay made in china, it works, but im scared it might mess the internals of the phone or mess with the battery levels, is this true or is it safe?
Output of the charger:
4.3v, 380mah

I think it's too low. It has to be at least 5 volts and 500mah.

I'm not an electronics expert, but based on my personal experience, this does not damage your phone but it willl charge quite slowly (or it might refuse to charge at all, if limitations are built in inside the phone).
I think you should look for a charger with 500-1000 mAh (5V) output.
On the other hand, no, using a non-SonyEricsson charger will not damage your phone (I've been charging my new Mini Pro exclusively with my Samsung charger (which came with my i7500 Galaxy which is happily forgotten by now) because it provides a stronger current than the SE provided one (and should charge faster, even though I haven't really tested this)).
EDIT: quite a good writeup here: http://anythingbutipod.com/2009/08/usb-charging-guide/

SGS2 Charging limit 650mA.

Is there any way around this limit? Custom kernel etc.
It's really annoying that my phone discharges, albeit slowly, when using satnav and full screen brightness.
No, there is not. However, if you are using GPS in your car and your charger is detected as MISC or USB, you could increase that to 650mA.
Mine is detected as a charger, not MISC or USB, so I get the full 650mA but I need more current, probably 800mA would do the trick.
I wonder if fitting the new Samsung extended battery would increase the charging current.

No, it would increase battery life due to higher capacity, but not the charging current.
You could resolder a resistor on the phones motherboard, but there is no software way to get around the limit.

Just to clarify so others don't keep spreading it, trying shiyah (sic) kernel with voltage control will not change anything, you are limited to 650mA.

I looked at that but, apparently, although it shows a 950mA option, the phone still won't draw over 650mA.

So it's hardware limited, how stupid .
My main use for a smartphone is satnav and one that goes flat after 500 miles is about as much use as a chocolate tea pot. I suppose my only option is to turn down the brightness and remember to go back to HTC for my next phone.

Assuming your car charger is actually supplying 650mA and the phone is still losing charge, you're not entirely without options. For example, you could use a lower brightness (which you already acknowledge), limit the CPU frequency/disable one core or have your sat nav application turn off the screen between instructions.

Thanks, I'll investigate the CPU options, I couldn't live with the screen turning off though.
For the future, I wonder if ICS's better handling of the two cores will reduce consumption.
You can turn mystic up to 650 from 450 which might help with the discharging while using satnav issue.
You would need a custom kernel and voltage control.

I just downloaded a battery widget app and my car charger (2amp) is definitely recognised as 'AC' which I assume should be 650mA.
I'm using Android 2.3.6, Gingerbread XILA2, Rooted. Would Siyah kernel be worth a try?
Fast charging the battery shortens its life anyway. Slow charges are better, IMO.
I don't mind waiting a few extra minutes or buying an additional battery and cycling them, or charging them externally

It's not likely to help your issue, at least not without playing with a few already mentioned things (like limiting CPU frequency or disabling one core).

Is it good to charge and use phone at the same time?

My phone has 50% battery left. I plug the cable into my laptop to charge over USB. Then I play some games at the same time. The battery level comes up slowly.
So is it good to do that? Or we should do one at a time: charge or use phone.
I have always done it that way and ive had android ever since it first came out. Nothing should go wrong, at least not for me.

Yeah this is a good question I have always wondered about it... Won't it affect the battery like long term?
Wont harm anything
it doesn't matter if affects to the battery or not, you will trade your phone for another new one before the battery gets damaged
The only issue is that the phone will heat up like crazy so...
If you're overclocked or it's a very hot day, please avoid doing this, otherwise you may damage your phone.

Using while charging overheats the battery and the mobile itself.
Heat is the biggest enemy of batteries (wrt. longetivity), so yes it does reduce battery life. Having said that, most of us upgrade phones in less than 2 years, so it wouldn't be as much of a problem.
But overheating is not good for rest of the phone hardware.

I really doubt that. If the phone or battery were overheating, you wouldn't be able to touch it.
Maybe it reduces battery life, but that can't be much, since the battery gets hot whether it's being charged or not.

Using it while charging is fine. Mine charges at about 30-35*C, gaming on top its up to max 41/42. Thats well within limits and its going to have negligible effects on the battery pack.

a few question about i9100

hello
i have a few questions and would really appreciate if you could answer me;
1: ive seen a 1800 2100 and 2500 mah batteries on ebay i.e:
www.ebay.com/itm/1800mAh-Battery-Pa...420094?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item4ab886c5be
are the the same size and compatible with my i9100 (i dont want my device to explode or somthing )
2: my i9100 is taking for ever to be charged... it can take up to 4-5 hours from 0-100% is it normal?
3: it also heating up very often to 38-48 c (at least thats what the app tells me) is that normal also??
thanks!
1). You'd be lucky to get more than 1400 mAh on any of them, and if it says it fits, there's no reason to think otherwise
2). If you're using it at the same time, yes
3). Yes
same questions...
I have been tempted to buy one of the extended batteries, so what you say is that they are not good quality and will not last more than the stock one?
I also get bery high temepratures on the phone, is there a way to kow the limits on temperature for this phone?
Thanks, I have the same questions

1. You can use the bigger battery but I think the 2000mah needs a bigger battery cover.
2. Are you charging it through the wall or usb? Some roms have a fast charge option but might break the usb port.
3. Heating is normal. Just let it rest for a bit. You can try to take the battery out for a few minutes

Are you somehow implying that was a dumb question? Because I know there's no reason Samsung has to replace it, But Apple would...
And the battery's useless to me now and had to replace with an Anker 2200mah and just want a non insulting answer how far I can push my luck with Samsung's warranty.
Check the warranty information batteries are covered but it could only be a 6 month warranty on them, it is shorter than the phones warranty.

batteries naturally lose capacity over time. most manufacturer suggest you get new ones once a year.. so at 8 months, you're pretty close to the recommend date already so I high doubt it especially considering it's a removable one

Dammit you right...
It is only 6 months warranty on batteries, I just assumed it was 12 months because you always hear that you should replace rechargeable batteries every 12 months, But still 8 months, less than 300 charges and rarely charging at below 20% shouldn't be enough to cause a 25% capacity loss and shows it has weak cells.
how do i test my battery capacity ?
please don't ask questions in General
How have you been charging it?
Almost exclusively used USB here, 600-900mA charge. Been 6 months, one charge per day, no noticeable drop in Battery Monitor Pro stats..

Been hearing that long before the Internet was created and makes sense because lithium cells do usually hold full charge about that long used daily, And anyway I just checked the warranty on my Anker 2200mah & 4400mah batteries and they got an 18 month warranty so shows phone manufacturers are just being greedy so they make more money on accessories giving a short warranty.

Yes I am , thank you, cause the slow charge issue was elaborated and mentioned so many time around XDA but seems no one cares to search and read.
This phone with and with original charger, and AFTER teh update from Gingerbread to ICS/JB is charging as per specs. On Gingerbread there was a flaw that permitted to charge it upto 900-1000 mA but the phone was rather hot, I recall charging mine in an hour and a half or 15-20 minutes more, from 2-3% to 100% back when phone had GingerBread.

You can use 2.1A output chargers too, it is simply not going to draw all that but you might get the better on the go recharging while you're using the phone with heavy apps. Just think of the dual car chargers - they have both 1A (phone) and 2.1A (tablet) output. SatNav on 1A is zeroing or still draining your phone battery, while 2A can slowly charge it on the go.
You just give it a needed juice and if the discharge is so greater then recharge, there's not much you can do about it.
Call it a flaw, but Samsung did it cause of longevity of their batteries and li-ion technology.
That is why I indicated iCrap and BB - their fast charge is provoking rather fast discharge too cause the battery will not hold it. I have colleagues with BB who're charging in an hour but get their phones depleted in 3 hours of usage... I wouldn't want that from my S2 for sure. :good:

It doesn't matter what the output current of the charger is... the phone will only draw 650mA.
The charger I got with my S2 delivers 1A but my phone only draws 650mA. Actually the hardware doesn't support it.
IMO, 3hrs is pretty fast for a full charge.
Edit: Just noticed that Fevves already mentioned all that...

Some kernels have the Option to change the charge rate but even at 650mA the phone will get very hot if you are doing something on it while charging
