[Q] Chinese Input for Viewsonic G Tab? - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have the g-tab with C-C v7. It works fine. Actually, the Skype video support is very good. However, when I tried to install apps (Google pinyin and/or Sogo) for Chinese input I could not make it work. Mainly, I cannot enable either one to work in the Settings/Language & Keyboard menu. Does anyone have any experience/successful examples? Thanks in advance.

Are you using the stock rom or the rooted ones? Pls elaborate.

The gtab have to be rooted, you have to use root explorer and move the apk from /data/app to /system/app, change the permission to rw r r. Reboot and now you can enable it from settings.

I'm on the same Rom and have been using QQ Chinese (Handwrite and Pinyin) Input without any problem.
Please refer to the download link to try it yourself.
http://www.bkill.com/d/dl.php?n=1&server=url_1&id=2845::1274770227

Are you using Calkulin+Clemsyn v7? It is Floyo (2.2)。 The QQ input is for 2.3. Will it also work fine for 2.2?
Edit: I installed it but cannot enable it either.
I have no problem to enable Soguo on my HTC incredible. On G-Tab with VEGenTAB 7.10, it also works. It appears a Calkulin+Clemsyn v7 problem.

I don't have have root explorer. Is there any free program can do the same thing?

I'm on Calkulin+Clemsyn v7, 1.5Ghz Rom for BL1.1 running Froyo. All I had to do is the go to setting to activate QQ input. Once done, I can long press on any input field to bring up the "input method" option and choose QQ input.
I did not need to copy the QQ input apk file to \system\apk like when I installed Swype.
Good luck.

Just install one of the Malata T2 firmware on the Gtab. It is in Chinese until it is changed to something else. I played with 3 or 4 of them for a while. I like them, but the lacked the Honeycomb feel...
There's a link either here or on Slatedroid for the Malata firmware.

That was exactly I have but I just cannot activate the QQ input. The check sigh was never on.
BTW, C&C v7 is supposed on bl1.2. Are you saying it can also installed on bl1.1?

CyanogenMod6-v3.2.1 discussion

Hello all,
I do not have a lot of posts, so cannot post in the DEV thread.
Also I think it is good to discuss it separately not to spam the DEV thread.
For the ones having uppercase problems:
Press the text input box for some time and a popup will appear for input method. Use Android Keyboard. Done.
Several people asked is it ok for everyday use - yes it is. Using it for a week without problems. Got only a reboot twice by disconnecting the phone from the USB cable with 3.1. Do not get it now with 3.2.1. I got no random reboot so far, expect after FC with 3.2 and root explorer.
About the updates:
You can update all the time to copy the last package as update.zip to your sdcard and then running xrecovery 'install update.zip' method. When I first went from SE to Cyan 3.1 the phone stuck on reboot. Went to xrecovery and did a factory reset and the phone booted normally (with Cyan and not the SE stock).
If you check the contents of the .zip it's easy to understand what will get updated.
About current problems:
Besides the one described by owain, I get forced closed when the market starting to install any application and when running root explorer with 3.2 and 3.2.1 (which has no update regarding these). Also for root explorer I get a reboot after FC. With 3.1 both was working fine. I've seen some changes in the zips that I do not understand the reasons for (why ADWLauncher.apk and MarketUpdater.apk was totally removed from /system/app, things like that).
I will continue to report here if the thread will not get removed. Please try to be specific about your experiences to help the other users.
Thanks a lot,
arch
I try to create an inventory of exact issues and solutions below:
Issue #1: No uppercase
Solution: Press any text input box for some time and a popup will appear to choose an input method. Use Android Keyboard. Done.
Issue #2: There are no zoom buttons in the browser.
Solution: Go to settings within the browser, disable/enable zoom controls. They will be visible thereafter.
Issue #3: Market stoppes working in the moment after the installation of an application finishes (forced close).
Solution: None so far. Tried this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11708912&postcount=479), but it was not working for me (caould not install Vending.apk). If someone could post exact steps to reproduce, it would be fine.
Issue #4: Root explorer gets a forced closed on restart. Get an 'SD card safe to remove message' and a reboot soon thereafter.
Solution: None so far.
Issue #5: Disconnect from a running PPTP VPN connection. Get an 'SD card safe to remove message' and a reboot soon thereafter.
Solution: None so far.
Issue #6: Keyboard backlight is still on after sliding back the keyboard.
Solution: It has some timeout. After a while, the backlight is switched off.
Issue #7: Sym(bol) button not working
Solution: After pressing it (blue+sym) press space and a pop-up will appear for selection. If you don't see the char you wish for, blue + long press the key which likely has it as an alternative (instead of pressing sym). E.g. long pressing blue + Z (which is 3) will give you 3, 3/4, 3/8.
hi everybody
it seems like we've got an incredibly smooth and fast rom so far. everything works flawlessly
I still have only 2 small (really small) issues:
1) changing language on a hardware keyboard. on a stock SE rom there was a tiny selection box on a screen. now there's nothing. I just can't change language on a hardware kb...
2) there's no zoom buttons in a browser.
is it bugs or just my stupidity? if someone will help me, I'll appreciate it a lot
bw, have anyone noticed the same things or maybe it's just my install ?

This my first post i think, but I've been watching this forum for a while for updates.. Thanks for making this post.. I was just going to spam the forum with posts so i could post in the development thread. But then i happen to find this thread.
Does anyone have the original camera apk? or would it NOT work?
The basic one on 2.2 is UGLY and not very good for the small screen. Also the file names are annoying.
I find the original one on 2.1 was alot better, it fit the screen better. Also i like how it saves the files as DSCxxxxx made it really easy to use.
Vignette takes way too long and does NOT flow well. (takes long to save photos + You can't press the camera button to get back to taking photos.
The original one on the 2.1 firmware flowed well and you could take pictures easily.
If not can anyone recommend an app that works just like it, or really similar?
sym key
Damn me... i see your thread just when i post a thread for the sym key... :-|
By the way, the sym key doesn't work as expected, it doesn't pop up special characters, special punctuation marks and emoticons selection (as it does in SE stock rom).
Anyone with the same issue?

It's a known issue of this ROM. You can type special carakters like "ä" by (in this case) long pressing the "a", "ö" long pressing the "o" and so on.
for capital letters you have to do this:

Hi to all, this is one of my first posts here (maybe the first).
I've just installed this custom rom, i had some trouble with the market solved installing market.zip as suggested in the official thread of this CyanogenMod 3.2.1 and now it seems working fine.
I've just a question about the next apk installation... where install them? Or better, wich settings use?
I mean...
go in Settings > CyanogenMod settings > Application settings
have I to select "Allow application moving"?
And then change something in "Install location"?
By the way I prefer to install the applications in the sd card because of previous problems of full memory with Android 2.1.
Please tell me something about this question and sorry fo my poor english
so for me all is well done but bluetooth is still not working, only after the 1st boot
but after deaktivating und aktivating threre is no blutooth again.
Is there a fix posible ?

Chinese or Japanese keyboard and Input disabled in TNT lite 4.4, please help
Hi;
Rooted G tablet with TNT 4.4, love it. Thak you so much for the great work !!! The only issue I have now is that both Chinese / Japanese IME or Keyboard do not work. Some one on XDA advised to move apk to system / app, I follow that direction, reboot the tablet, long press on the text input box, but I still not able to select either Google Pinyin (for Chinese) or Japanese keyboard. Please help. Thx
No it does support any input. I have Google chinese ime on my g tab tnt lite. You need to copy the APk into the system app folder just like you do for other input methods.
Here, prove of concept : 华文

Did you actually install the ime before you copy it over?

I found the Google chinese ime and click install (didn't know how to just download it instead). I couldn't see where it was download or installed to (using Root Explorer) when I tried to copy that to system app folder. Therefore 'check box' was disabled. Please give more detail and thanks ......
It may be in /data/app folder
Erm. Steps:
1) visit market, download app
2) go to root explorer
3) look for /data/app/"apk name"
4) long press and select copy
5) go back till you reach root folder
6) click "mount r/w" at the top
7) navigate to /system/app
8) click paste at the bottom
9) head back to root and press "mount r/o" at the top
10) reboot tablet
Btw I am now using baidu. They do hand writing recognition, works great.

[Q] Making G Tablet work

I have a G Tablet, and have used Cyanogenmod 7.0.3 for some time. I thought I would upgrade from 1.1 to 1.2, so I could try some Honeycomb like goodness. Right. Not a good plan.
Thanks Roebeet for NVFlash!
So, I have been trying to reinstall what I had, and I have run up against some troubles. I now have Cyanogenmod 7.0.3 and Gapps 20110307 running on the Gtablet, but I am struggling with the market. At first, I could not get the market to run; all it would do was FC. Thanks to Google-fu, a change in the language to English (United States) got that repaired.
So, the only way I can get stuff installed is to revert back to 2.3.3 market. The new market sees my tablet as Malata Tablet. I have changed build.prop fingerprint, but in the Market on the device, the message I get is "Your device is not compatible with this item". On the web Market, it identifies my tablet as Malata Gtablet. If I downgrade the Market app, I can install Maps and Flash, but when Market upgrades those apps don't show up as apps in My Apps.
So, I need to change more in the build.prop, right? So what the heck do I change? I am not able to mess around for days on end to upgrade to 1.2, I just want to use the tablet for what I was; web, kindle, google reader. I can do that, but I want to fix this weird issue too!
Can anyone help me out? TIA!
What is your ro.product.device = in build.prop?
Try changing it to
ro.product.device=olympus
--
Fixed
Actually, the way I fixed the market issue, was to change the DPI in the build.prop from 161 to 160. Boom, everything works fine.....yes!
G tablet is back baby, I am waiting for cheaper quad core tablets before I even dream about upgrading.....sweeeeeeeet!
Where do I go to change the DPI in the build.prop. Sorry for being such a noob!
I've been told two ways to edit build.prop, one by using ES File Explorer (which is free) and the other by using Root Explorer (which isn't). However, the only way I know to install either is via the Market, which tells me they aren't compatible with my tablet.
I have a chicken-and-egg problem: I can't edit build.prop until I install one of those apps, and I can't install either app without editing build.prop first.
So hopefully there's another way... anyone?

Someone else probably will answer, but you can get root explorer by using Amazon Market app which you can download and install and while they aren't as complete as the real "market" they also work and don't cause these kinds of problems. (you will have a better experience if you already have an Amazon account.)

Get Google Pinyin from the market. Use Anycut to to access keyboard settings. Check box for Google Pinyin and click on Google Pinyin settings to make changes to the layout. Make sure you register your NT with the Android keyboard first.
It's a good news for me, too.
Apparently google pinyin wont work on thwlle stock keyboard? Just tried but to but to no avail..

Please read #8 below...
Here are some stuff you have to prepare. You have to google them:
1) Rooted
2) root explorer
3) modded DroidSansFallback font - wqy-microhei.ttc (rename it to DroidSansFallback.ttf)
4) Keyboard Hack
5) Cedime chinese input method
6) AnyCut
Steps:
1) root the NT to enable overwrite system files.
2) use root explorer to overwrite /system/font/DroidSansFallback.ttf with the modded one
The following steps I cannot remembered clearly
3) use AnyCut to create a shortcut for Keyboard setting.
4) enable the Keyboard Debug mode to allow Keyboard Hack
5) go to somewhere that shows the keyboard. Long press the virtual dot button and prompted to the input method option.
6) switch to Cedime

This link is the original link teach you how to installing alternative keyboards:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1360036
Sorry I make mistakes. Since my NT crashed yesterday and I have to re-install all the things. I make it more clear:
Font:
- DroidSansFallback.ttf is download from Terewong's blog. You may google "terewong droidsans" to download it. The original one has no problems but it did not cover all special characters.
- Use root explorer to copy DroidSansFallback.ttf to /system/font/ . It is a system directory. You have to mount as R/W before you place the file.
Shortcuts and Enable Debug options:
- Open Anycut, Create a New Shortcut -> "Activity" -> "Android Keyboard Debug"
- Create another shortcut for "Accessibility"
- Create another another shortcut for "Debug settings"
- Return to your alternate launchers (I chose GoLauncher. the original launcher does not show home screen, therefore you will never reach those shortcuts if you have no alternate launchers)
- Enable Debug mode options in "Android Keyboard Debug" and "Debug settings"
Keyboard:
- Google "cedime android apk". I found ver 2.0.5 in gphonefans.net. You must have the file outside of Android Market since market will install to the system automatically. We are NOT "installing" the keyboard but "COPY".
- Use root explorer to copy cedime.apk to /system/app/ . (it is also a system directory obviously, Mount as R/W)
- modify the file permission of cedime.apk with root explorer. check all read, write, execute boxes. This step is aimed to enable cedime.apk to be found with other programs (that is Accessibility).
- reboot the device so that it will refresh .apk files in /system/app/.
Enable cedime :
- Run the Accessibility shortcut you created earlier. Under input method, select your new keyboard.
You should keep the shortcut "Accessibility". When accidentally you switched to the original keyboard, you could use it to switch back.
I try to post screen captures when I back to home...
Hi Raye, its all working wonderfully fine now! had a bit of hiccup with frequent fc though. 谢谢你!
What I did was the following:
- install cedime with Pinyin from android market.
- Reboot
- using root explorer, go to DATA/APP to retrieve the cedime APk.
- copy the apk to system/app while in mount r/w mode.
- set permission to 777.
- reboot
- choose cedime as input in accessibility.
- reboot
- if you experienced fc, copy the apk to your SD card (in sdcard/temp or something)
- install the apk using package installer.
- Delete the apk in system/app.
- Reboot
- should be fine
Results may varied though, but this is what I did.
Thanks again Raye for the great assistance! appreciate it lots!

Thanks for the traditional Chinese keyboard; has anyone successfully installed Simplified Chinese IME?
I've tried Google Pinyin, Baidu IME and Sohu IME using the Cedime method described, but all 3 are force-closed immediately after I restart. I've run out of ideas on what to do.
Edit: I've switched to CM7 which took care of this problem.

Just wonder your chinese input still works after reboot?
I had tried the approach & managed to typed some Chinese text, but sadly after reboot, all Chinese input methods had to be force closed.
Yes, it still works after reboot. In fact, I confirmed it by reboot it again before I started typing this reply.
Good luck
Did you copy the files from:
1. data/app to system/app
2. data/data/lib to system/lib?
Try the Go Keyboard apk, it got both simplified and traditional Chinese input and got handwriting recognition with it.
Make sure you copy the lib files
Folks,
I've had success with Google Pinyin IME. For those dealing with force closes, make sure you copy the lib files as mentioned in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1360036
Without that, your keyboard will keep trying to input characters that just aren't there, and hence force-closing (at least that's what I think is going on)

Can't Use Thumb Keyboard With Rooted Nook Tablet. Help!

Hey guys,
I bought thumb keyboard recently and would like to switch the rooted keyboard with this one. When I try to go into keyboard settings in the settings window, it closes me out of the settings with a force close. I tried installing it through Root Explorer but it didn't give me access to the keyboard.

I tried to follow the instructions but can't find the apk file. I installed from Market and see the app, see it running but my data folder is empty and I don't see anything in system/app.

There's a setting in ES File Explorer along the lines of "show hidden files" or something. Do you have that checked?
I never did find the menu setting in ES to view hidden files but I was able to find the apk using Root Explorer. The issue now is that when I try to paste it into system/app I get a message that the folder is read-only. I've checked all of the settings that I know to...I'm rooted, have debug turned on, using Root Explorer, etc.

Strike my last post please...I must have grabbed an old ES apk originally when I was unrooted and just sideloading. Now that I'm rooted and have access to Market I reinstalled the most recent version and have all of the menu settings that I needed to view hidden files and write to system. Thanks for your help!

Great! It should all work for you now
more on keyboards with nook tablet
I've been both successful and unsuccessful with this technique, so there must be something about each individual keyboard that either allows it to work or prevents it from working. I have a rooted nook tablet, which I have set up to block B&N software updates.
I have been able to install the Hacker's Keyboard successfully. I have been able to install SlideIT so that I can choose it as an input keyboard, but it only causes Force Close repeatedly. I have been able to install Swiftkey X (preview version), and can use it, but it tells me that I need to complete the installation in order to be able to use all the features. (I don't know whether that means there is something I can do that I haven't done yet, or if it means I need to pay for the full version.) Finally, I have tried to install the Thumb Keyboard, but even when following the same process as I have with all the others, it does not even appear as a choice when I pull up the "select input method" screen.
Has anyone had any success with SlideIT or ThumbKeyboard on the nook tablet?
Thanks!

Some keyboards seem to require more effort than others. Read through this thread:
[Tutorial] Installing alternative Keyboards on the NT.
There is a lot of info in there, iirc I had to read through it myself a couple of times, but I was able to get Hacker's and Swype working. And others have gotten the other keyboards you mentioned working as well.
Also, another neat trick is to also install Keyboard Manager. I have it and it automatically switches from Swype (in portrait) to Hacker's (in landscape) when changing orientations. Very handy.
