Hey all,
I have a Hero on 3 UK network and since the stupid network dont seem to be releasing any updates for it, I want to root it and manually put 2.1/2.2 on there.
Problem is, NONE of the guides on how to flash it work.
Here's what I've tried so far:
Goldcard method - I have succesfully created a goldcard using a Kingston 1GB card (tested on a Desire and works). Trying to downgrade to the stock HTC ROM using HTC's RUU gives me error 140 (bootloader version error).
Rooting the phone - Phone is all hooked up to ADB, can poll it for information etc. Tried to boot it into a recovery image but get an error saying the following: "downloading 'boot.img'... FAILED (remote: not allow)"
Alternate rooting method - So I found out ROM version 2.73 or whatever it is has some kind of extra security on it. The guides are advising me to download flashrec.apk and install on phone to backup then flash the recovery sector of the phone. This doesnt work. I can neither backup nor apply the recovery images. Even if I override the backup part, it still wont work Just gives me yet another error.
Seems that my Hero is locked down with some impossible to break security. Anyone else having the same difficulty with Three UK? If so are there any other ways you guys may have come up with to root/flash your phone? I'm getting really pissed off with it and am probably going to do an insurance job on it if I cant flash it.
FYI, this phone has not been updated since August 2009. Everything on it is stock from Three UK.
Versions (if you think it's useful):
Firmware: 1.5
Build: 2.73.771.62
Baseband (radio): 63.18.55.06IU_6.35.08.22
Kernel: 2.6.27-430d1aea
Any help I shall be most grateful for!!
Follow my newbie guide. Should talk you through it step by step.
The bootloader error is probably a driver thing. Update your HTC Sync and it should update the drivers.
Sorry, just noticed the thread got moved, my mistake.
Anyone able to shed any more light on it?
I followed the noobie guide and it didnt work. I have the latest version of HTC Sync installed.
Insurance job looking more likely.
Still with error 140? Did you update the driver in fastboot / bootloader mode?
Alternatively try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=726118

Which one is your noobie thread mate? I followed several threads off this forum all claiming to be noobie. TBH, they were all pretty straight forward enough, and worked when I helped my mate flash his Desire.
Min can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=645253 (it's also in my signature )
Ok yeah, I'll just go over the points in your guide then explain how it failed...
Using Flashrec to backup and apply a recovery image...
Flashrec simply doesnt work on my phone (have tried about 3 different versions, including the very latest which is 1.13). No functions work. Cant even use the bypass backup button (hidden button to the right of backup button). That section ended there for me.
Goldcard method...
No matter what RUU I try to downgrade to, it does not work. Keep getting error 140 (incorrect bootloader version). The goldcard I made definitely works as we used the same one to downgrade my mates Desire today.
I found some other guides, which looked like they might help as they go a bit further, but ultimately every time I try and actually do something, it gets blocked, access denied or some other error.
Flashrec won't work if you're on the wrong version of android (i.e. not downgraded using goldcard).
Goldcard is fine it is most likely your drivers in your bootloader mode that are wrong - check them first.
Drivers were ok. I managed to downgrade using a newer version of the stock HTC ROM after scouring these forums for hours.
So in short... ALL GOOD.
Only problem I have now is that there is no manual update option on eclair (1.5). The 2.1 FOTA updates attempted to download before I setup the WiFi and now it wont come back.
If you want to stay official then you can put the month forward a few and the update should show up again.
Surely the point of this was to get root and a custom rom though no?
The point was actually to get Droid 2.1 'cos 3Uk are dragging their heels big time, but now opens up the options of loading custom ROM's.
TBH I'm happy just to have 2.1. Eclair was doing my head in with all its bugs.
Thanks for the tip with the date - it worked!
i wounder if you did it or not ? cuz o have the same demmn problem with my hero G2 touch t-mobile nothing work for me i try all methods i think last solution is to bring a big hummer and break it as i like (
Fellow 3 UK Hero Owner
I'd just like to add how angry I was when the 2.1 update failed to show up. The Goldcard method worked perfectly for me, then I looked at custom ROMs. I currently run Gingerbread and I have to say, not only is it SUPER fast and smooth but its way less buggy than the stock Hero ROMs.
I'm with the Cronos crew. To get the latest ROM, search for cronosproject (.org) and click forums. (cant post link because i haven't posted 8 times )
Seriously, you wont regret it
best way to fix this is...... make sure u have a file manager, download universal androot to your computer and then to your phone install through file manger and root phone then once rooted install rec image with rom manager from market.....there you go its rooted now follow my guide to flash custom roms properly and to root phones....
mayb its ur android version
may i please know it i can surely help you
Hello,
I just got used Atrix from CraigList (coming from ATT Captivate). So I know about flashing ROMs etc on Samsung devices.
I performed factory reset after I got it and current version reads as Version.4.1.57.MB860.ATT.en.US.
Upon booting Atrix tells me that OTA update is available, I download it and trying to install just to find error message below
assert_failed: apply_patch_check("/system/app/AccountAndSyncSettings.apk", ...... E: Error in /cache/Blur_Version4.1.57.MB860.ATT.en.US.zip. Status 7
My gold is to stay with current offical ATT ROM untill official Gingerbread updates rolls out and then modify OS.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks,
G
I would research in the DEV section and start over from the very beginning as far as firmwares are concerned. I got that same error when I tried to update but it was because I flashed a deodexed zip and had root.

Look for the 1.83 sbf here and just flash that. It's the same exact version you're having an issue downloading.

Hello.
before i start i would like to mention that i have searched both the forum and google before asking.
i am having an issue with the famous E:signature verification fail.
back story:
have i777 2.3.6 KK6 and wanted to Root and flash custom ICS.
used the method of Odin3 mentioned here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285894
Odin3 One-click Downloader I-777 UCKH7 Stock + Root No Bootloaders
I777_UCKH7_OCD_Root_No_BL.7z
once finished the phone was actually rooted successfully.
but here is where i am getting the problem.
i have:
1. transferred to the Root directory and /or the root of an SD card my custom room (tested to work on my other i777).
2. went to the market and downloaded the premium version of rom manager and downloaded CMW.
3. flashed clockworkmod latest version from whithin the app for ATT SG2 (same way i did with my other SG2 phone).
4. Rebooted into recovery.
***difference between my other phone and this is that the other phone was on 2.3.4 and not 2.3.6kk6***
now i am having issues.
the recovery on the phone is (e3) and i do not have "advanced" or the option to disable signature verification check.
and every time i try to either flash custom rom, update zip or even update kernel to cherry picker 3 i get the same error.
it always fail on that error.
now i have tried alot of method by searching.
none worked.
since now this is end of May 2012 i thought maybe there is a new solution.
can you please help me?
thank you.
UIPDATE:
fixed.
it was a bit complicated but i managed to get it fixed.
in short what i have done:
1. used software update to bring to ATT original 2.4.6
2. once done, i "downgraded" to I777UCKH7-CL503881-No-BL
3. Once done i used heimdall-suite-1.3.2-win32 with recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.3-galaxys2att to reflash the kernel to codeworkx
4. once done i rooted using GalaxyS2ATTRootZedomax.
5. Once done i went to clockworkmod recovery and FINALLY!!!!! had a NORMAL clockworkmod recovery installed.
6. Flashed Custom ICS rom.
working successfully.
was scary - but 6 hours later finally figured it out.
awesome
I can't imagine what you used as a search term because the e signature verify problem is well documented in here and many other forums. So is the "fix" you supposedly "figured out."
Recently I ordered Motorola 4g from US.... It was with stock Sprint Sunfire OS.
System Version : 45.4.13.MB855.Sprint.en.Us
Model MB855
Android 2.3.5
Baseband N_01.29.10R
Webtop 1.2.0-180
Kernel [email protected] #2
Build 4.5.1A-1_SUN-254_13
So what I did, I was trying to install custom rom on that. Steps I had taken
Rooted phone via installing SuperUser and various rooting methods like ClickOnce, Photon -Torpedo but no one seems successful , while executing I got errors everytime. But after day or two I came to know about that my phone is rooted. As I was getting SuperUser popups on root operations. Then I installed CWM and tried to install the ROM from there but everytime I got stucked at Yellow Triangular icon (recovery mode).
Repeated step on rooting process and unlocking the bootloader by applying pudding.rar and fastboot commands and every time i got the error and Starting RSD Screens, but anyhow my phone recovers itself to its original boot state afetr pulling out battery and manually restrating.
Finally one day I use some other Recovery Tool , i am unable to recall the name. It installed and rebooted successfully in the recovery mode. I then wipe the dalvik cache, wipe factory reset and then tried to installl the custom rom that MIUI 2.68 i think . I was happy to see some designer screens on my phone and then it said rom installed successfully.
I then reboot my phone and found it in the Failed To Start2 , Starting RSD mode
I tried various way to restore...
Installing pudding.rar using RSD lite but everytime I got sec_exception : sec_exception : b655, eddc,eb
I then tried reinstalling SBF : 1FF-sunfire-user-2.3.4-4.5.1A-1_SUN-198_7-CM-release-keys-signed-Sprint-US.sbf and sunfire-2.3.5-4.5.1A-1_SUN-254_4 but while enumerating phone I got error sec_exception febe 4e 4e
I have also tried nopudding4u.sbf but the same result.
Please,, help me and my phone out .. as its going to be more than a week... i feel handicaaped...
Please guide me through the step by step , which file and when and please do provide the links of the files to download.

Thanks for your reply peetr_.. I would like to know on the basis of my exceptions , Is my phone recoverable or become as useless as a paperweight. I can see fastboot modes and RSD modes and can even swicth between them. In some other forum , I came to know that ,I can reover my phone back but for that I need a locked bootstrap for 2.3.5 and then reflash using the stock sbf.
So could you please tell me how to do that and where to find those files. I am digging XDA Forums and AndroidForum.com past two weeks for the solution...

Should have read around a bit before you attempted all of this. Go to the general and QA section of the photon forums and search the first few pages of each. There will be 5 or 6 different threads with people who have experienced the same problems in which we have completely outlined the steps you would need to take.
Is this what I have to do ????

Yes. Exactly those steps.
Bootstrap is bootstrap CWM recovery, you must download the apk and install, following the instructions.

Thanks for the confirmation of the steps.
Few more things:
1. I have still my bootloader locked i think. So will these these steps work.
2. Flash this SBF (http://d-h.st/XGJ). Now you'll have stock 2.3.5 for Electrify. But you need Sprint services (I assume), so you don't stop here. - What If I dont want Sprint Services? I am here in India and there is no sprint network. We have VodaFone, Airtel and Other operators, still on 3G. No 4G here. Can I stop @ 1.
3. Can I install , other custom roms on it, in future If I want?
No cause you will have a photon radio with electrify modules won't work.

I have installed the SBF correctly and too roooted the phone. Also installed the DroidX Bootstrap by Koushik Dutta. but I am unable to boot into recovery. Can I try ClockWorkMod Recovery... that we generally used to flash roms or strictly bootstrap is necessary. I have tried System recovery by Tenfar but it wont boot into recovery...
Please help
It's recovery for DroidX2. Not DroidX.
And you must be connected to wall charger, to boot into it.
Photon is now Electrified with LIFE ----

But still I am curious about the custom rom installation.
1. Is it possible and safe or I have to stick with the stock rom.
2. Wait for motorola / sprint for their another update if they allow us to installl custom roms (well its not possible, I know)
You can try some custom roms for locked bootloader. You can always sbf back.
Can you provide me some links for my phone as i am facing some unusual restarts withis rom...

Also i am facing Sleep Of Death issue after waking up this dead phone from grave....
Earlier it was working fine. Generally i face one or two a day.
Is rom upgradation a solution? I hv experienced whenever it goes to sleep the back panel gets heated up than normal. Also when i use wifi 3g the same thing happens...

This seems like a lot of work just to get a softbricked Photon 4G to work. Didn't Motorola release a soak test about two months ago? Do we have an SBF for that? If so then couldn't someone with a bricked Photon 4G (running 2.3.5 stock) just flash the soak test files and get the Photon working fine?
Also if someone does follow these instructions, will they be able to get the latest OTAs from Sprint when ICS/JB goes official?

This is the only way, there is no sbf for the latest soak. And honestly, this process doesnt take very long. If you cant spare an hour to unbrick a phone then people shouldnt be tinkering with their phone in the first place. And nope, you will remain locked, no way to unlock and install ics/jb.
"Say Apple one more MoPho'n time..."
I'm currently struggling with this process. I flashed the .sbf via rsdlite. It gets to 100% but then it says error because phone failed to re-enumerate. I installed RockoDev's ROM last night and phone was bricked all night while I naively thought it would load. Was stuck at the NOW screen when I went to bed and hadn't changed when I woke up.

I am not. It used to be an old gamer tag that I used for various games. On a side note I still can't get past step 1. Phone fails to re-enumerate after flashing .sbf file.
