How to take Motorola Photon 4g out of the grave? - Motorola Photon 4G

Recently I ordered Motorola 4g from US.... It was with stock Sprint Sunfire OS.
System Version : 45.4.13.MB855.Sprint.en.Us
Model MB855
Android 2.3.5
Baseband N_01.29.10R
Webtop 1.2.0-180
Kernel [email protected] #2
Build 4.5.1A-1_SUN-254_13
So what I did, I was trying to install custom rom on that. Steps I had taken
Rooted phone via installing SuperUser and various rooting methods like ClickOnce, Photon -Torpedo but no one seems successful , while executing I got errors everytime. But after day or two I came to know about that my phone is rooted. As I was getting SuperUser popups on root operations. Then I installed CWM and tried to install the ROM from there but everytime I got stucked at Yellow Triangular icon (recovery mode).
Repeated step on rooting process and unlocking the bootloader by applying pudding.rar and fastboot commands and every time i got the error and Starting RSD Screens, but anyhow my phone recovers itself to its original boot state afetr pulling out battery and manually restrating.
Finally one day I use some other Recovery Tool , i am unable to recall the name. It installed and rebooted successfully in the recovery mode. I then wipe the dalvik cache, wipe factory reset and then tried to installl the custom rom that MIUI 2.68 i think . I was happy to see some designer screens on my phone and then it said rom installed successfully.
I then reboot my phone and found it in the Failed To Start2 , Starting RSD mode
I tried various way to restore...
Installing pudding.rar using RSD lite but everytime I got sec_exception : sec_exception : b655, eddc,eb
I then tried reinstalling SBF : 1FF-sunfire-user-2.3.4-4.5.1A-1_SUN-198_7-CM-release-keys-signed-Sprint-US.sbf and sunfire-2.3.5-4.5.1A-1_SUN-254_4 but while enumerating phone I got error sec_exception febe 4e 4e
I have also tried nopudding4u.sbf but the same result.
Please,, help me and my phone out .. as its going to be more than a week... i feel handicaaped...
Please guide me through the step by step , which file and when and please do provide the links of the files to download.

Most of those sticky threads are outdated, without important informations. You need to search in whole dev section, there are the answers, how to recover your bricked Photon.

bring it ON..............please

Thanks for your reply peetr_.. I would like to know on the basis of my exceptions , Is my phone recoverable or become as useless as a paperweight. I can see fastboot modes and RSD modes and can even swicth between them. In some other forum , I came to know that ,I can reover my phone back but for that I need a locked bootstrap for 2.3.5 and then reflash using the stock sbf.
So could you please tell me how to do that and where to find those files. I am digging XDA Forums and AndroidForum.com past two weeks for the solution...

Should have read around a bit before you attempted all of this. Go to the general and QA section of the photon forums and search the first few pages of each. There will be 5 or 6 different threads with people who have experienced the same problems in which we have completely outlined the steps you would need to take.

Is this what I have to do ????

1)Flash this SBF (http://d-h.st/XGJ). Now you'll have stock 2.3.5 for Electrify. But you need Sprint services (I assume), so you don't stop here. -

Im pretty sure thats right. However, I have never faced this problem first hand so i would wait for a second opinion before going forward. Peetr will know, hopefully he will chime in.

Yes. Exactly those steps.
Bootstrap is bootstrap CWM recovery, you must download the apk and install, following the instructions.

Thanks for the confirmation of the steps.
Few more things:
1. I have still my bootloader locked i think. So will these these steps work.
2. Flash this SBF (http://d-h.st/XGJ). Now you'll have stock 2.3.5 for Electrify. But you need Sprint services (I assume), so you don't stop here. - What If I dont want Sprint Services? I am here in India and there is no sprint network. We have VodaFone, Airtel and Other operators, still on 3G. No 4G here. Can I stop @ 1.
3. Can I install , other custom roms on it, in future If I want?

No cause you will have a photon radio with electrify modules won't work.

I have installed the SBF correctly and too roooted the phone. Also installed the DroidX Bootstrap by Koushik Dutta. but I am unable to boot into recovery. Can I try ClockWorkMod Recovery... that we generally used to flash roms or strictly bootstrap is necessary. I have tried System recovery by Tenfar but it wont boot into recovery...
Please help

It's recovery for DroidX2. Not DroidX.
And you must be connected to wall charger, to boot into it.

Photon is now Electrified with LIFE ----
Thanks a TON to all the Photon Guys, especially peetr_. :highfive::highfive::highfive::highfive::good::good::good::victory::victory::victory::victory::victory::victory::victory::victory::victory::victory::victory::victory::victory::victory::victory::victory::victory: Now my photon and ELECTRIFIED and has a SPRINTing LIFE....
But still I am curious about the custom rom installation.
1. Is it possible and safe or I have to stick with the stock rom.
2. Wait for motorola / sprint for their another update if they allow us to installl custom roms (well its not possible, I know)

You can try some custom roms for locked bootloader. You can always sbf back.

Can you provide me some links for my phone as i am facing some unusual restarts withis rom...

Is rom upgradation a solution? I hv experienced whenever it goes to sleep the back panel gets heated up than normal. Also when i use wifi 3g the same thing happens...

This seems like a lot of work just to get a softbricked Photon 4G to work. Didn't Motorola release a soak test about two months ago? Do we have an SBF for that? If so then couldn't someone with a bricked Photon 4G (running 2.3.5 stock) just flash the soak test files and get the Photon working fine?
Also if someone does follow these instructions, will they be able to get the latest OTAs from Sprint when ICS/JB goes official?

This is the only way, there is no sbf for the latest soak. And honestly, this process doesnt take very long. If you cant spare an hour to unbrick a phone then people shouldnt be tinkering with their phone in the first place. And nope, you will remain locked, no way to unlock and install ics/jb.
"Say Apple one more MoPho'n time..."

I'm currently struggling with this process. I flashed the .sbf via rsdlite. It gets to 100% but then it says error because phone failed to re-enumerate. I installed RockoDev's ROM last night and phone was bricked all night while I naively thought it would load. Was stuck at the NOW screen when I went to bed and hadn't changed when I woke up.

I am not. It used to be an old gamer tag that I used for various games. On a side note I still can't get past step 1. Phone fails to re-enumerate after flashing .sbf file.

Atrix - GingerBlur to CherryBlur = Failed To Boot 4!

Hi There
I was using GingerBlur on my Atrix until I decided to go ahead and try out CherryBlur.
I downloaded the MEGA pack as suggested by the developer, booted into CWM recovery, "Installed zip from SD card".
After about 2-3 minutes, it said: Installation Successful.
From the menu options, I chose, Reboot.
From then on, I cant boot my phone. It just says, "Failed To Boot 4" and goes into RSD mode.
I cant get it to fastboot or anything.
Question:
Which SBF do I flash now? I heard flashing too old an SBF can hard brick my phone because apparently later versions of Android set a fuse somewhere on the phone?
Could please someone help me by telling WHICH sbf will save me here?
Go to gitbrew.org/atrix and download the 1.8.3, it should be near the top of the list as it is a popular download.

As long as you are not on Gingerbread OTA you can flash back to 1.83. Really shouldnt be trying to flash roms if your bootloader is still locked. most of the roms out now need unlocked bootloader and the unlocked CWM.
Gingerblur was a pseudo-Rom, didnt mess with anything important, Alien, cherry, and aura are for unlocked bootloaders using the CWM version for unlocked bootloaders.
Thanks a lot for your reply
I was waiting for someone to reply before trying to flash again using RSDLite..
I had 4.1.83 OTA when I installed GingerBlur..
Can I flash to the stock ROM (4.5.91) provided here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1163342
Or should it be some other version, say 4.1.83, as you suggested?
And then how do I go about unlocking the bootloader? I am sorry, but I am a newbie to all this...!!
Thanks again!
I flashed the 1.8.3 sbf using rsd lite then I used kennethpenn's update to go to gingerbread. you can find it here: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1163342
2 things:
*be sure you unlock the bootloader before doing this update*
and
*when you click on the download link on xda it takes you to the bottom of a briefmobile page, scroll up to the download link that says "beta 4.5" under it, and download that one... otherwise you'll get a failed to boot (i did this by mistake).*
Great so almost all believe that 1.8.3 should be safe as far as I did not do an OTA for 2.3.4 (which I did not, it was only until 4.1.83)
I will try flashing the 1.8.3 on the weekend, about 24 hours from now
I have my fingers crossed!
failed to boot 4 issue happen when you flash a boot.img in your phone without unlockimg the bootloader, i know... i had it...
Got it back to life!
Thanks everyone guys...

Brandless Atrix, how to start flashing

Hi,
I ordered an Atrix 4g yesterday on amazon.de and since flashing a custom rom on my previous phone was such and improvement I wanted to do the same with the atrix. But after reading some threads in the dev section I must admit i'm very confused and I have some questions.
- How do I know if my phone is unlocked? if not how to unlock?
- I think it ships with 2.2, update to 2.3.4 or just flash custom rom?
- Can anyone tell me all the steps I need to do to go from stock 2.2 to a custom rom? (CM7 Mod ICS FINAL or Neutrino ROM 1.4-S) (including unlocking, recovery etc) this part is very confusing because a lot of roms have different types of flashing and some are talking about fastboot, does my phone have this?
- How do I know what version of the phone I have? ATT? Tmobile?
- Is there any chance of bricking when doing this? With my previous phone you could ony soft brick.
I'm sorry if these things are already written somewhere but I just couldn't find em.
Thnx for all info you can tell me.
Check the noob guide in the gerenal section, its at the top of the forum,
To figure out your software version just go to settings >about phone
As for bricking you can only hard brick if you use the ota gingerbread update THEN use rsd to downgrade. So if you only use rsd to unlock then you are safe
sent from my Atrix via XDA premium
So I got my atrix a few days ago and have been looking to unlock/flash it since.
I read most posts/guides and I think I know what to do, but I'm still scared of bricking so I wanted to dubble check if I got it right
My atrix:
System: 45.31.0.MB860.Retail.en.DE
Android: 2.3.4
Build number: 4.5.2A-74_OLE-31
What I think I have to do:
1st: Flash SBF file (the IHOP file from the house of pudding) with RSDlite
2nd: Fastboot unlock
3th: Install clockworkmod with Fastboot like in:
ww w.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-install-clockworkmod-recovery-on-motorola-atrix-4g/
(remove the space between the WWW, not enough posts to post a link)
4th: Do a backup with clockworkmod
5th: Flash a custom ROM with clockworkmod and clear cache, dalvik cache and data.
Could someone plz comfirm that all this is correct?
Greetings!
That sounds about right
Be sure to follow any specific installation instructions for the Custom ROM you choose. Some prefer you wipe via fastboot, some want you to wipe certain partitions *after* installation, etc.

OK, this all worked perfect and have been running Neutrino's since. But I wanted to try darkside now, can I just flash this in clockwork? Because I read somewhere when you flash an earlier version you get brick and neutrino's is 2.3.7 and darkside 2.3.5?

[Q] Unlock Recently and have links?

Anyone here recently unlock their Photon and have updated links? It seems a lot of the links on the Pudding Unlock page are broken. I'm hoping to unlock bootloader, root and get onto CWM w/ CM7.2.
I have the files on my pc at home i could share with drop box. A lot of sharing sites are going down. Government going after people. Which bites because we are not doing anything illegal. It is those who pirate stuff that cause the problems.

Also, under this step:
Root:
A moto-fastboot flashable /system image with su already in /system/bin (pre-reooted) This is based of the system in Yay4jugg's thread (NB: you need to be unlocked to flash this .)
Instructions:
0) Make sure your phone is charged.
1) Boot your phone in to fastboot mode, connected to PC.
2) At the prompt/cmdline type moto-fastboot flash system system.img
3) Make sure you have superuser app installed from market.

Could I just flash CM 7.2 for this step or is there another flashable system image I could use instead? This and RSD Lite are two of the links that are dead (along with stock recovery.)

There is a sticky in the dev section:
!!!LOOK HERE FIRST!!! Motorola Photon Compendium a.k.a. all things MoPho 1/08/12
As the title states, it is a thread for (almost) everything relating to the MoPho. SBF's, RSD lite, unlock files, ROM's and so on. Almost every SBF and all the needed software that is linked in that thread is hosted on my site.
So probably a pretty basic question... On these unlock/root/relock steps...
If I want to unlock bootloader and install CM7 can I just stop with the step of installing CWM and then install CM7.2 for the Photon? (I don't care if I have 4G - no 4G even near me.)
Flashing CWM Recovery will be the last step taken. After which you will have the ability to flash custom ROM's

Try to use other computer with other OS. It might solve the problem sometimes.

Doing my best, but I'm still not an expert.
I think it's not related to OS. I just thought that you should try other computer, that may have all required drivers. But it looks like it doesn't help.
The second SBF you mentioned could probably lock your bootloader forever, and you shan't have tried it, unless you want stock 2.3.5 . Moreover, I read somewhere that this file is not signed, and that could make problems with flashing too.
I can't tell what the problem is, since I don't have much experience, but I'd say that the problem may happen due to missing drivers or maybe the files you try to flash are bad. Where did you get them? Did you get any notifications from windows about downloading new drivers during the flash process? Can you get a normal 198_7 SBF and try to flash it? Take one from here. I didn't try it but it looks good. Just unzip it and flash (I'm not responsible for any brick). And Please, make sure your battery is full. It's important.
Hope this helps! Otherwise, I'm sorry, but I have no idea.

I tried to flash this SBF using RSD but again sec_exception is raised.
I want to raise something here, before the phone got this issue, I've updated the android using OTA and I'm not sure what that update was. Maybe the update upgraded the android to 2.3.5 so the RSD flash is maintaining as downgrade so it fail.
Please your help. Thanks
Hi
What build did you have before you applied the OTA update? When have you got the update?
I'm sure that there are more experienced users here that have better ways to tell what build you have, but I don't know any better ways.
The issue raised just after the applying the OTA update or when?
Lots of people face problems of random reboots after downloading the new OTA. Maybe you have a problem like this, but not random. I think that the best thing to do is to flash the official 2.3.5 SBF. The one that you tried to flash is not signed and was made for tests, and that seems to be the reason why you can't flash it. Please answer the questions, and hope to find a signed SBF somewhere, soon.
Edit: Looked into this thread, and as I understand you have a way out. But first we should make sure you have a 2.3.5 build. Otherwise, it won't be a wise step to flash Electrify's 2.3.5 SBF.
Anyhow I sent a PM to peetr_ to have a professional advice.

I would also suggest the same as above. If you are on 2.3.5 (OTA) 254_23, flash 254_13 sbf of electrify.
Well, Peetr_ answered my questions, and now I'm sure about your next steps.
1)Flash this SBF. Now you'll have stock 2.3.5 for Electrify. But you need Sprint services (I assume), so you don't stop here.
2) Download bootstrap from Google Play, and get it working. Of course you need to root your photon first.
3) Flash this ROM from bootstrap. I think that this is the only custom ROM that supports Sprint services, so you need it. Please follow the instructions for this ROM carefully, you don't wanna flash the SBF again.
4) Flash 254_13 modules with bootstrap. you need them.
5) Flash 2.3.5_254_13 sv2 boot, recovery and cdrom image sbf with RSD Lite.
6) Flash 254_12 libmoto_ril.so with bootstrap. You don't need to flash the radio SBF. That's what Peetr_ told me.
That's it. You have a locked bootloader, but you're able to use your Photon.
Have fun!

Thank you yairku and also for Peetr_ for your professional help.
I tried to flash the mentioned SBF and it was flashed successfully, but my issue still exists and the phone keep rebooting when trying to initialize the internal storage.
I believe that the issue may be hardware issue. Is there a tool or something to get the phone log using fastboot?
What do you mean by initialization of internal storage? You mean mounting internal sd after boot? Or something different? Internal data partition? When does it happen? Or do you mean mounting internal sd in usb mass storage mode?

Thank you Peetr_ for instant reply.
I meant mounting internal sd after boot and it happened after the splash screen of US.Cellular.
Did you try to format it in bootstrap recovery?
But you cannot install it probably, if it keeps rebooting.
Try to boot in usb early enumeration mode (vol. down + power).
But most probably this has nothing with sd card, but radio.
Try flashing 2.3.5 sv2 198_7 radio sbf from 2.3.5 sv2 custom sbf thread.

First of all, don't even think of opening the screws of your Photon! That will completely void the warranty that Motorola gives to its customers!
When this issue started? If you opened your photon or dropped it, there might be a hardware problem. The thing that holds the SIM card and the Micro SD card mightn't be in its place. When I opened my Photon it couldn't finish booting, and the reason was that I opened it while the cards were still on their places. Opening the Photon this way made that thing move and that prevented my Photon from finishing the boot process.
So please tell us, when you started to face that issue?
Motorola covers its customers with warranty for a year after purchase. You can send your device for a free fix if it doesn't show "unlocked" when you boot it, and if you didn't remove the seal from the screws.
I have faced the same earlier and this solution worked for me,
1)press the power button and volume down, by using volume down button go to the Android recovery.
2)press volume up to enter the recovery,,if you see the triangle symbol press both volume up and down at the same time after that it will enter in to the recovery.
3)wipe data, cache in the recovery and reboot, it will be fixed.

I'm having a similar problem where I can't get service. I followed the steps posted by yairku. Looking through this post, I see some people have posted their specs. When I look at mine, I don't see a Baseband version listed. Not sure if that makes a difference?

It happens if there is somthing wrong when you install a rom
try to find another rom and flash it if you unlocked the bootloader
or flash ATT 4.5.91 Rom via RSD Lite ONLY IF YOU HAVE LOCKED BOOTLOADER

go here to download any atrix related files
visit that site, it contains everything for the atrix and the best place to get roms, tools, utilities, mods, tweaks, and so forth....
but first download the zip file below this message. I uploaded the zip file for you that has adb, fastboot & moto-fastboot(lets you install .img over 100mb), the necessary dll files & atrix recovery image & command.bat which just opens the command prompt window for you and puts you into the folder so you dont have to navigate anywhere in command prompt to located folders.
first try this, download the zip file, extract to any folder like c:\fastboot
then run the command.bat file to quickly bring up a command prompt and type these commands
Code:
fastboot -w
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot reboot
that may solve your issue if your kernel installed properly and the boot.img file was properly written to the boot partition. If it doesn't solve your problem, go to that link above to find the kernel for whatever rom you're on, att, cm7 or cm9. Get the correct kernel thats compatible, pull out the boot.img from that zip file and also place it into your fastboot folder, then go to fastboot mode again and type "fastboot flash boot boot.img" and then fastboot reboot.

do you have clockworkmod recovery installed or any custom recovery installed? if not, then thats why it wont flash, your bootloader is locked.
the whole idea behind using clockworkmod recovery is to avoid using RSD to flash sbf files which can brick the phone easily. Its best to avoid using RSD to flash sbf files on your phone at all costs and leave only as a last resort method if you just cannot recover the phone.
Flashing a new rom would normally be done by already having your phone rooted and unlocked with clockworkmod recovery or some other custom recovery installed so you can boot into recovery and choose "install from zip" and point to the zip file that has the rom. The custom recovery does the flashing for you and its a safer method of flashing roms on the phone than RSD.
If you got no other choice and I know what thats like, i been there too. Download RSD Lite v5.6, should be a free download online somewhere, and then search online for "1FF-olympus-user-2.3.6-4.5.141-111212-release-keys-signed-ATT-US-GAS_NA_OLPSGBATTSPE_P012.sbf", then use RSD to flash that sbf onto phone.
Before trying that, goto http://samcripp.com/files/ and in the folder OTA Updates, download the first file named Blur_Version_91.4.5.141.MB860.ATT.en.US.zip and put it into the fastboot folder, boot into fastboot again and try "fastboot update Blur_Version_91.4.5.141.MB860.ATT.en.US.zip" and you may be able to get away with just using fastboot to flash that update onto the phone to restore corrupt files. I would try this before using RSD to flash the phone

you said that site doesnt have any SBF files to download, this is a good example of why the owner decided against posting the sbf files online. A lot of people from what I heard, were either soft bricking their phones into temporary hat weights or going full out hard into brick city on a one way ticket joy ride. Flashing sbf files is very risky and RSD tool isn't really meant for the public to be downloading to use at home and flash full roms over their devices. Thats a Motorola utility and it's not exactly a risk-free method of flashing the rom inside these phones. Plus getting SBF files online, you rarely know 100% if its compatible with your model phone or where came from exactly and that it's integrity can be checked for 100% consistency that nothing half-way through the file is missing any chunks of code or is corrupt. Try sticking to only using fastboot & adb & get clockworkmod recovery to make FULL and complete devices backups.
Now that I learned my lesson a few times, no matter what, first thing I always do in recovery is make a backup before I flash anything at all, just in case of just in case, its better to measure twice and cut once.
try that link above and restore stock gingerbread 2.3.4, phone doesnt need to be unlocked or root, and make sure to use "moto-fastboot.exe" it lets you push\pull & install files larger than 200MB onto phone through fastboot, the regular fastboot has some limit on file sizes

Restore Your Motorola Atrix 4G Back to 4.5.91 Stock Firmware
it helps to remove any problem related to rom..
With so many Android phones literally flooding the market these days, it’s no wonder that there are also so many firmware upgrades and custom firmware being developed and released every now and then. A superior device with great stuff neatly packed into it, the Motorola Atrix 4G is one of the devices for whom developers have devoted significant firmware love.
One reason for the attention that devs give to the Atrix 4G is that it is a fantastic device with a dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor and robust ability for handling impressive graphics and video without choking. Together with its powerful processor and 1 GB of RAM, the Atrix 4G is a mean powerhouse that can be further exploited with the use of third-party applications and custom ROMs.
In an age where technology is constantly changing at an alarming pace it is important to always have a trusted source to get your updates in a timely fashion. Custom ROMs and factory firmware updates have played a crucial role in the development in many of our devices.
For those of you who have rooted your Atrix 4G and already have installed custom ROMs, then you might already have some bad experiences with regards to unofficial firmware sources. Unofficial firmware such as custom ROMs are literally filled with many bugs and disabled features. In many cases, these ROMs are not stable for daily use.
Luckily for owners of the Motorola Atrix 4G, there’s an escape hatch for reverting to stock, functioning firmware and return the phone to its factory state.
In this tutorial, you will learn how to roll back your Motorola Atrix 4G to the official firmware version 4.5.91, regardless of your current firmware
