Motorola really needs to hurry up and release the source for the Photon!!! The lack of kernel/ROM development is really frustrating and I really want to put my rooted Photon through the paces!
Yes honda i know exactly what you mean. I'm hoping they release the source very soon I'm suffering from not being able to flash anything, I blame it on my og Evo

I think it is happening some time this week. The first time I have ever hoped that a guy would show me his packages!

Same here. My 3D is still sitting on my desk, it is calling me but I am fighting the urge to go back!
It's tough, guys, especially with the beast of a phone that Sprint will be getting soon (SGSII), which you know will have mad support here in XDA. I will probably end up giving the Photon to my son and getting the SGSII instead.

I don't know man, I looked at that thing, I don't think I would trade it up to be honest. We will have kernel love here really soon, I can feel it. That SGSII doesn't seem very cool looking to me and I don't think I can go back to Samsung. I used to have the Eternity, the almost a smartphone but not quite. If I go to anything it won't be until 2012 when we get the HTC Kingdom or something of that nature. Can't see myself going to the SGSII, but who knows, if it has mad support and the hardware is comparable to the Photon, meaning performance and real numbers wise then its a possibility.
But I'm still not giving up on the Photon.
-DJ
I am feeling the itch too but then I step back and think about it, what is wrong with the current function of my phone then I draw a big blank. Granted I would love to push more performance to future proof but really can't see a whole lot of need to go beyond root for the immediate future.
If you are comparing the development scene to the original EVO I don't think that anything will ever compare. It was so far ahead of its time people swarmed to it. The GS2 looks great on paper (he'll it looks good in the leaked photos) but samsung has let me down with firmware (example EPIC). I can totally relate though I would love to see some CM7/MIUI on here.

As far as performance, the Exynos runs circles around the Photon... As for firmware updates, that's what we have XDA for. I am going to wait till it's released and see how it feels. I'm loving my Photon, don't get me wrong, but I've always been a tinkerer and I sort of go with the flow sort of speak. I guess I was spoiled with how the OG EVO development took off... Let's see how it goes with the Photon while we wait for the SGS2 to be released.

I don't think anything runs circles around the Photon, I think the Photon is the one running circles. As far as real numbers, that is true. If not please link me some information. That SGS2 will not beat the Photon, sorry but I am an avid overclocker with PC's and I know that if this phone out of the box out performs any phone on the market right now, its just going to get severely better with custom kernels. I personally can't wait now that we have release.

But to be honest, if you are a member of XDA, it means that you very well know how XDA devs support dozens of phones and we don't depend on updates from the manufacturers as long as they release the source code. As long as XDA devs support the SGS2, I couldn't care less if Samsung updates it or not.

I don't understand why people are so concerned with sammys support when we're all going to flash ROMs as soon as possible...
As far as benchmarks:
anandtech.com/show/4179/ti-omap4-and-lg-optimus-3d-tested
They seem to be pretty evenly matched. I would side with tegra because its more well established with greater dev support but I've not really seen that to be the case... yet. Outside of Tegrazone anyway

Sammy updates are still kind of important. Look at the epic with the gps issues. That phone had a crippled gps until it was updated. Not saying that the sg2 will have those issues, just stating that there are some things that not even our devs can fix.

Because with the samsung epic, gb was never officially released so no kernel source code. So devs can't do much other than tweaks. No cm6 no cm7, just leaks after leaks.
SO who's gonna be upgrading to the Amaze 4G ??

In order for me to purchase another device it has to be rooted with s off already accomplished. I love the mt4g way to much right now.
Nah, even if it was rooted. Even though the specs are a little bit better than the Sensation I'd still rather get the Sensation because all of the good devs already jumped to the Sensation.
I'd be surprised if a lot of devs went to the Amaze. Probably going to be a similar situation with the SGS4G when all of the devs were already on the Vibrant, no point in getting the SGS4G.
Good phone though, just wish that's what HTC did with the Sensation. The 1GB of RAM and better camera is nice.
Nope. The specs are all that. I'd need more to make me jump to a new phone.
ill prolly pick it up, but not when it first comes out. i love my phone but id like to have something with a little bigger screen and soft keys
The device just looks so damn good though. I'm thinking about it hard.

Steve still works with CM, it's just a separate project now, it may have less work from cyan himself. However you can't forget that CM has a large amount of devs, Cyan has help from others so I doubt they would actually allow CM brand to die off like this.
Well perhaps working at Sammy will give Steve a chance to make sure ICS reaches other their other phones quickly
Considering that CM just announced it would support 10 new Sony Ericsson devices, I take that as a sign that we won't see CM winding down anytime soon.

Since Steve works with Sammy now I'm thinking that he could be learning new or different tweaks, Sammy should have some sort of ICS access (Sammy should have it by now) depending on his job position; so maybe he can work on CM8 slightly earlier. Personally I'm not to thrilled about ICS, after seeing that NexusS w/ "ICS"....It looked nothing like I thought, I figured Google would step it up to fend off iOS5/WP7.5(Mango). But it doesn't seem like much of a UI overhaul, but I'm sure the usability/features have been significantly changed.
I've been sitting on an upgrade since last month so I'm going to use in on the Amaze, even though I was planning to use it on the Sensation.

Same here. I was able to reduce it by changing the review time (of the shot) to off. Also, if you have the Amaze camera (MeanRom I know has it) the lag is a little shorter than that. Hopefully ICS can help in that aspect!
Google should fix Gingerbread or other versions and make it smooth and fast like iOS. Not release these updates because all of them uses alot of memory and uses cpu more than other operating systems. Iphone with 1ghz cpu and 512ram is almost the same as S II what is the fastest phone. Af course you have a lot options for Android. Different ROMS, Kernels and other things but Google should work more on system. They should make it smooth, bug free and stable as hell. And they should make one system that runs smooth even on low-end devices. Right now Android is just a big mess, a lot versions but it's getting better from one side but going down from other side. Sorry if my english hurts your eyes.

Umm each iteration works more towards this... Ios is so smooth because it uses hardware acceleration, something that is only just becoming possible with ICS on Android. Sit back and trust that Google might just have common sense too.
I think I've heard something about getting ICS some when in June.

HTC does a really bad job with sources, some of us already know that.
Some things you might want to know
1- the One X+ Can not flash a custom rom with its boot loader locked, unless of course there an S OFF method, but that's a low possibility. In other words HTC in some cases takes its time to release a boot loader unlock method. Usually they do a good job with this. What they suck at is giving Kernel sources. We won't see a custom kernel until December if the device was released in October
2- Its hard to do ports based of sense, so development could go for the worst with very little to no source and playing around with sense is not really a walk in the park
The one x+ looks like a good device. Hopefully T Mobile picks it up over here in the US soon.
Just giving a heads up.
As previous One X great Devs found a way to move on development, sure X+ will have a lot of dev!
It's not a big improvement against the One X (international) though, but after the new Nexus will be a LG, I will maybe even buy this device as my next phone and will do some stuff for it..

So you're saying for someone like me who buys phones to slap CyanogenMod on, I should expect poor results with the One X+? I will avoid then.
However, does sharing Tegra 3 with the Nexus 7 benefit the One series any? Did the One X get helped by the Nexus 7? I see this kinda like the SGS1 phones getting benefit from the Nexus S sharing SoC. The SGS2 is totally screwed as you know as it still lacks hwcomposer and stuff for CM10.
Yes I could get a Nexus, but sometimes I happen to like the design of non nexus phones more. The One X/X+ are truly sexy phones to me, and as long as they're decent to develop for I'd jump in.

This could be possible but we are never sure, either way getting something like CM booting is only half the work, the real test is getting wifi, Bluetooth, GPS etc working without HTC releasing anything. The only way to get them working is work arounds. If you are a flashaholic that likes roms that are not based off stock then stay away.
If you like Sense then by all means get it
Yes totally screwed. Sammy can kiss my ***

As someone who has an HTC flyer I must say, It saddens my to hear that HTC hardware isn't an option.
HTC has some aesthetically pleasing hardware and sense itself can be pretty nice. The tablet just feels great in your hands, and has a nice screen..
It absolutely sucks that HTC lets themselves get held back by poor sources.. I'm "ok" with my tablet not having the most up to date version constantly.. I didn't sign a contract for it.. but, I really don't want a phone that I'm locked into having for 2 years to be left out for no real good reason.
Still, I'd kill to see a smooth running JB rom that is factory quality on my flyer.
Thanks for the warning.
I have a Sensation and if it wasn't for CM this thing would have been in the garbage. I'm hoping to pick up one of these and I'm sure development work for it will eventually come around. It needs some time.

After Sammy announced the S4 is coming out with the "vanilla" experience, the rumor mill started going crazy expecting htc to do the same, specially after one of their execs teweeted "wait".
Those rumors where quickly scuashed when another high up in the company tweeted that no htc was not planing a "vanilla" edition... However now the same guy (geek.com) that leaked that sammy was coming out with their has said that indeed htc is coming out with one as well.
So what do you guys think? And the big question would be, if they do come out with it, would we (T-mobile) guys be able to port it over and get OTA's directly from Google?

Exactly what I came to this forum for. If they do release it, can I port it over to my T-Mobile HTC One.
Since the only device announced at I/O was the S4 vanilla edition, I decided waiting around for a Nexus wasn't worthy it. I have the Galaxy Nexus, but I never liked the plastic feel of it and the S4 feels the same way, just with way better specs.
I've always liked HTC devices going back to the Windows Mobile days.

Yeah, I worry about Google's direction to slap AOSP on pre-existing devices (S4/One so far). Sure they don't need to design, engineer and product their own phone (Nexus 4) so from an infrastructure standpoint it makes sense. But once you start porting AOSP to multiple models, it will inevitably slow software releases because Google will have to ensure compatibility with varying hardware. Also, features will be missing that will make people upset (custom camera software, beats, multi-screen, etc).
Sure they will run pure AOSP, but at what cost (feature-wise)? That has me concerned.
Unless HTC/Sammy/Moto? release their highly configured software apps (camera, etc) independently, the AOSP experience on these currently produced devices will leave a lot to be desired, IMO.

Then don't buy one. More options are always better. IMO
I miss AOSP, but for once I feel there's features on the Sense ROM I don't want to give up. I think they did a really good job and for once I'm not pulling my hair out and needing to root the phone. (That's saying something!)

It's a reality guys... Really hope that devs can port this for us Tmobile users...

Same goes for me. I could live without the gallery (although nice), beats (there are plenty of EQ apps out there), blink feed, and many others. the one piece i could not go without is the camera software! Sequence shot alone is stellar, and some of the other zoe features are great as well.
That said i am keeping my fingers crossed that the fine devs here will be able to port the camera software to the stock rom when it hits. If that happens this phone would be absolutely perfect in my eyes!

Yes, especially since the announcement did not say it would have TMO radios. I think this is basically an ATT device, similar to the 32 Gb unlocked version.
We may not have to port....

I just want a camera that's a camera. Zoe seems stupid to me as do filters.

Zoe isn't on by default.
However, I found some pretty good uses for it. It's better than using the "action" shot setting. It's literally like taking freeze frames from high definition video. I've finally been able to get decent pictures of my dog. It's hard to get her to stand still.
The camera was the main reason that I stayed on stock but the aokp camera is actually really good
