Hey all! I was wondering how your call quality is? Everything seems great on my end. The people on the other end however say I sound muffled, too bassy, too quiet, or like I am in a tunnel. Is this normal for these? They all said I sound clear, just quiet. They can especially tell as I am coming from a BB Torch as my main phone. Any input or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

The first few days I had my Atrix, I had that problem but once I turned the noise canceling to high and got the 1.5.7 update, everything is crystal.
Play around with the settings to see if you can't figure something out.
The Skype app on the Atrix has known problems with the audio so don't use that for now...

I tried that and it didn't help much. This is really very disappointing, I had someone tell me today that it was so quiet that they actually had to concentrate on hearing me. I'm thinking I'll have to have it replaced or returned. I would think it wouldn't be a problem since it's Motorola. I hate the idea of returning or exchanging it because I do like it and I've got it all customized and loaded now.

It most likely is software but hey getting a new handset from them can't hurt.
I read on here that moto went above and beyond to fix someones phone with a audio tech approved handset!

I tried it with my Jawbone Icon and it works perfectly. By software do you mean something I may have put on, or Motorola's software? I guess if I do want help with this contacting Motorola direct would be best then? I really appreciate all of the input guys.
Edit: Also my other thought was that I could change it out for an HTC Inspire. Don't know as though I would like that as much though.

Find your local motorola service center and take it to them. They'll courier it back to you free of charge.
Before you do that wipe it and see if that helps.

Your holding it wrong....or at least I was. I was getting the same complaints, and realized I was holding my finger over the Mic on the back of the phone. May fix your problem, just a thought.
As far as wiping it, that has been done and did not seem to help at all. Covering the mic on the back could possibly be an issue however. You are referring to the one by the fingerprint sensor correct? If necessary I may just keep my Jawbone around all the time. I will attempt to find my local Motorola service center in the meantime.

Hey, just wanted to update everyone. The update to 1.83 seems to have helped significantly. People say I sound much more clear. Thanks for the help!

There are 2 things that would cause what you describe:
1. the mic hole is plugged or blocked by something. Look on the bottom edge of your phone and you will see a very small hole. This is for the microphone. If there is something plugging the hole, you can use a needle or something similar to clean it out. Dont blow directly into the hole, it will just force stuff deeper into the hole towards the microphone.
2. If there is nothing blocking the hole or if it still does not work after cleaning, then the microphone is bad and needs replaced. You can take it to your carrier if you have insurance or find a cell phone repair facility near you and have them replace it.
I will try to clean and see if it works I called this mobile place but he said he don't replace them cuz its very. Hard thanks

Well I will admit that its not the easiest to replace, but any cell phone repair technician should be able to solder a new microphone on for you. If he cant do that, I wouldnt take your phone there for any type of work because it doesnt sound like he is qualified to perform some repairs.
True ill try to look for a better shop wait what you think it will be the cost to replace the mic
Sent from my HTC Mecha using xda app-developers app
Well that depends entirely on the shop, but probably in the $50-75 range.
So I Googled for shops in my area no luck its the same as other shops that its hard yo change that so I guess the only thing left is use it for 3 months how it is or get a replacement for 100$
Sent from my HTC Mecha using xda app-developers app
Well if you have a backup phone you could always use that phone and then mail-in your Thunderbolt to get it repaired at a shop that can actually do it for a reasonable price. I just did this exact repair on Monday and it worked fine, no problems at all.
Where do you live and what is the name of the shop

Hello good people of XDA!
I'll just get straight to it, well basically due to some water damage the main mic on my s2 is screwed, it just produces weird static for the other person to hear on call. I intent to get it fixed soon but just havent found the time. I believe there are two mics on the S2, so I was wondering: is there some way I switch to that for phone calls, for the time being?
Im rooted btw
Could you share your rom details for further advise

Im not aware of any but there could be some hack to enable it as the primary microphone. Its the noise cancellation input mic. Its located at the top right side of the phone besides the audio jack. Would be hard to talk into it and hear the other person at the same time, wouldn't it?

I use, mic-less earphones (ear buds or whatever you call them ) so thats not a problem. A hack of that sort is exactly what I am looking for ^^
I know I could just get some earphones with inbuilt mic but If im going to do that, I might as well get my phone fixed instead
bump?
Anyone?
why don't you simply repair it? Or you like your phone being crippled in this way...
Im out of town and in a place where i cant find a reliable place to fix it, im going back in like 4 days. So just need a simple hack for the moment
I have consistent problems on speakerphone with people saying they can't hear me. I had a bear motion slim case on it but I'm not clear if that is creating any issues. Is there a hidden microphone anywhere that the case may be covering? Or do I need a warranty replacement?
Sent from my SM-G900T using Tapatalk
It's weird, I've had certain people tell me this as well but others can hear me fine. Not sure what's going on, but I know that when I'm talking with someone who has trouble hearing me, if I put in my headphones it solves the problem. Maybe something to do with noise cancellation/echo reduction?
Do you have a case on or anything? I only have the issue on speakerphone.
Sent from my SM-G900T using Tapatalk
my girlfriend constantly nags about it when shes on speakerphone that i sound like im far away idk what it is
Bump. I tested with skype audio test last night with no issues. I can't figure out if there is really an issue

Stop trying to find issues where there isn't. The speaker on this device is horrible, so who would actually persistently talk using it
Sent from my SM-G900T using xda app-developers app
That makes zero sense. Especially since I'm referring to the microphone

I get the same complaint. Not sure why. My case doesn't cover the microphone from what I can tell
Sent from my SM-G900T using xda app-developers app
I've been messing around with this more and it seems like the bottom mic on my device is really directional in the sense that it only seems to pick up audible sound when you talk right into it. It's definitely barely picking up anything when the phone is held normally as if for a call. The speakerphone mic seems to work fine.
EDIT: I finally took it back to the store and swapped it out for a new one. It was definitely a hardware issue as my new one sounds much better.
Same issue here and I'm not using a case.
On speakerphone only, I get complaints every single time that people can't hear me to the point where I have to switch back to handheld.
Noise reduction currently off but it's the same either way. Gonna pop into Tmobile on the way home and see what they say.
Anyone else get a warranty replacement?

Go into voice recorder and be sure the microphone setting is set to 'normal'.

For those who have a problem with this, I've been dealing with this issue since day 1. It seems to be a T-mobile problem and NOT a problem with the phone itself.
The software is set up as half-duplex and not full-duplex as it should.
That means that if the person on the other end of the line is talking or making noise and you start talking, they're not going to be able to hear you. I've tried this with my phone and a replacement phone. Same thing happened. That means that you will continuously cut in and out.
I'm currently talking to T-mobile and they have a ticket open with me to work with developers on the issue. I have no idea what happened but, as someone who uses speakerphone all the time, it's a MAJOR pain.
If anyone has more experience with this sort of issue, I'd love to hear it.
Hi Guys,
I'm having a problem along the same lines. I moved to Tmo a month or so ago when the S5 came out (ported from Sprint). The first couple of days I had great coverage but intermittently when I talked to someone, they'd tell me it sounded like I was in a tin can. At times it was hollow or echo-y. It kind of stopped, but then started up again. To me, everything sounds perfect. Now, randomly when I talk to someone, sometimes they can hear me without any problem, and sometimes they can barely understand me because of so much feedback coming through (even though I can hear them perfectly).
Tmo gave me a new sim card to use and said to wipe my cache to make sure everything was good. I did that and it worked great for about a day. Now, it's random again. I call land line and it sounds like I'm in a tin can and when they talk it's lots of feedback. I call friend on att and they have loads of feedback when they talk but perfectly fine on my end. I called someone on Tmo and had the HD appear on the call and it sounded like he was talking through a pillow.
It's so weird I can't figure out what's going on, but it's getting really annoying trying to talk to someone and end up calling them multiple times just to see if I can get a clear connection.
Bluetooth in my car seems to work perfectly for each end, though.
I'm on stock rom, rooted w/ philz recovery, and have not updated to the new ANES.
I don't use a case.
Wondering if that would help out.
Check this out might explain the mic issue

Hi all,
I just got the Z2 for my fiancé as she wanted the best camera in a phone. All is going well except for call quality.
She hears everybody just fine but people complain that they can't hear her well. I've been reading online and some people are having the same issue even after replacing the phone.
Is it something to do with positioning the mic or could be a faulty hardware? She has an average (small) female face/head size. Could it be because the mic is just too far away from the mouth? Or something to do with noise-canceling mic?
EDIT: updated the phone to 402 and still she still has the same issue
I have the same issue, have to raise my voice slightly for people to be able to hear me properly

It could be caused by faulty SIM card
I one had this issue with another device and I was using a normal sized SIM cut to fit micro sim slot, one I got it replaced at my operator then all went marvelous
It's a proper so card so not sure it's that but I will test another just in case

Same here
But it do happen for most calls

Same here. Had to buy a handsfree, because i can't use the speakers when at work. NON disclosure stuff. I'm a bit disappointed at Sony actually. But with the handsfree everything is great.
My friends Z2 doesn't have these issues though, latest firmware.

Here too... Call quality on other end is not good enough till u speak.
Have had complaints about my voice quality being poor as well...
Is this an isolated case? So far I haven't heard anyone complaining about my voice. What does the voice sounds like on the other end? Choppy, muffled, too soft?

I have complaints with almost every phone call about my sound quality. Have to speak louder or take phone off my ear and put microphone closer to my mouth.
Got this problem as well. Thought my was an isolate case but seemly it isn't so. Hope Sony do something abt it in the next firmware update

Wow, seems that everybody is having the same issue! How do you guys manage to live with it? I'd go nuts.
Anybody NOT facing the same bad quality issue? I got the phone replaced, let's what what my fiancé thinks about it.
I am waiting for replacement at Monday , arriving a new bach , will report after it , but mine alwso has gaps and uncentered camera , i cant believe sony make so much deffekt devices and thats the flagship for 2014 ..imagine in 2015 sony will sell a phones that ruin themselfs in your hand

same here too !!!
if you let the mouth piece drift even slightly away from your mouth , people say your breaking up or they cant hear you ! seems that Sony have a crap microphone built in the phone . and what good is a phone when people struggle to hear you ????
