[Q] Problem with kernel after rooting - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Here are the steps that got me into this situation:
1. My provider installed a test version on my Galaxy S2 in order to resolve some problems.
2. After the above I rooted my device using ODIN 1.85 and SuperOneClick 2.1.1 using XWKDD insecure kernel.
The versions of my phone now are:
Model Number GT-I9100T
Android version 2.3.4
Baseband version I9100TJIKI1
Kernel version 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKDD-CL161513 [email protected]#2
Build Number GINGERBREAD.JIKI2
My intention is to flash CWM in order to install Cyanogenmod ROM. When I tried to flash the CWM using ROM Manager it failed. From what I read it is because I have 3e recovery.
I saw some suggestions for resolution, like flashing a stock kernel and than flash CWM again to avoid the invalid signature problem.
However, I couldn't find any kernel that fits my device situation.
Any suggestions for a route I can take to resolve the situation?
a route that will leave my device functioning

Flash cyanogenmod true recovery without rom manager. If the first flash fails, wipe everything, advanced>>wipe dalvik cache> then flash again.

Shouldn't I first flash ClockWorkMod Recovery in order to flash a custom ROM like CM?
At the moment when I boot into recovery I am getting an error "failed to verify whole-file signature"

Yeah you need to flash a rooted kernel via Odin first.
That kernel should be rooted and have CWM and busybox.
I would try to root with a compatible kernel to your stock one so you can do a backup through CWM incase you want to restore if you don't want to stay with cm7.
Check out siyah of cfroot threads for downloads and instructions. Just to get CWM if nothing else.
Check out the Australian thread to see what they used to root their i9100T devices.
In any case intratechs original firmware thread has your stock firmware to flash via Odin so if you need to you can reinstall to how it came out of the box.
Honestly forget kies and Rom manager and stick with Odin and CWM.
Good luck.
Edit: cm7 might have an Odin flashable version in which case you will be rooted after the flash.

My device is now rooted (I even use Titanium Backup).
Digging some more I found the following instructions to flash CM7 which include flashing CWM using Heimdall. Do you think it is safe to work according to these instructions considering that currently I have XWKDD kernel installed?
* Download codeworkx's kernel with the ClockworkMod Recovery and the Heimdall Suite.
Windows ONLY:
1. Power off the Samsung Galaxy S II and connect the microUSB to the computer but not the Samsung Galaxy S II.
2. Boot the Samsung Galaxy S II into download mode by holding down Home & Volume Down while connecting the microUSB to it.
3. Run the included zadig.exe in the drivers folder of the Heimdall Suite.
4. From the menu, choose Options » List All Devices.
5. From the drop down, select Samsung USB Composite Device or Gadget Serial.
Click Install Driver.
NOTE: A prompt may appear warning that the installer is unable to verify the publisher of the driver. Ignore it and select "Install this driver anyway."
Heimdall can now be used safely on the Windows computer.
NOTE: For more information about the Heimdall Suite, please read the included README.txt.
1. Power off the Samsung Galaxy S II and connect the microUSB to the computer but not the Samsung Galaxy S II.
2. Boot the Samsung Galaxy S II into download mode by holding down Home & Volume Down while connecting the microUSB to it.
3. Untar codeworkx's kernel into the Heimdall directory.
On the computer, open terminal and run the following command from the Heimdall directory:
4. heimdall flash --kernel zImage
5. A blue transfer bar will appear on the phone showing the kernel being transferred. The device will reboot automatically.
6. The Samsung Galaxy S II now has the ClockworkMod Recovery installed. Continue to the next section.

I've never used heimdall. Worth a try if you follow the steps.

Galaxy Player 4 boots always on recovery

Hello, this is my problem.
My brother has a Galaxy Player YP-G1CWYXAA (U.S. version) and he tried to install a kernel, but it was not for that model, so the player was bricked, just started in download mode (using key combination)
I have tried to restore it using several tutorials, wtih the same result. If I try to install the original kernel in ODIN get FAIL, other kernels it is possible to install but the player always starts in recovery mode.
I can install roms using recovery, but always starts in recovery. I read that it is necessary to do a fullwipe and wipe cache partition. I did it and the problem continues.
I need to suggest me what else I can do.
Thanks
PD: sorry for my english

I've tried a lot of times. There are several tutorials, I've followed all of them without positive results. Using "stock rom" and ODIN I get "FAIL" when flashing kernel. Using Heimdal suite, there is a problem with "libusb-12", there is no way to do it.
I've tried everything I found during last week, always the same result: stock kernel doesn't function and custom kernels get me to recovery.
Thanks
PD: I'm not a noob, I have some experience flashing phones with ODIN, Flashtools (Sony) an others
I just recovered my Player 4.0 USA from the same symptoms. I tried everything to get it to boot but I could only get to recovery or download mode after a failed attempt to revert from ICS. By default, it would just boot directly to recovery. I also got FAIL with odin and the stock rom that you referenced. The problem is that the Odin package for our player in the stock rom thread is corrupt. I downloaded Heimdall and used the other package for our device and was able to flash it back to stock successfully.
As for the errors you got in Heimdall, did you make sure to overwrite the drivers in heimdall before starting? While in Download mode, you have to go to Drivers/Zadig.exe in the heimdall folder and hit "show all devices" (or whatever it says in the menu) and then find anything that says samsung and hit replace driver. Once you do that, Heimdall will work. I originally had the same problem as you because I only replaced the driver while in CWM recovery (which was in ADB mode) and when I rebooted to download mode, it failed with the exact same error message.
Hope that helps.

I installed the drivers and that messed it up even more. Now Odin doesn't recognize my device and I can't flash anything to it. :crying:

That's because you installed heimdall driver. If you want to get it detected by odin, just go into device manager and uninstall the samsung driver then unplug your device and plug it back. The normal driver should be re-installed properly and odin should be detecting it after. Or, I think there is an option in zadig driver to unistall it but I'm not sure.

Well what happened when you actually attempted to flash the player directly from heimdall? Heimdall is not just for drivers, but an alternative to Odin (and in my case, the only way I could get the factory flash to take because using Odin, it failed every time).

Are these steps for rooting my S2 i777 correct?

A friend linked me superoneclick and CM9 to root my phone.
Basically, he said to:
1. Back up contacts
2. Boot into recovery,wipe data/factory reset
3. Use superoneclick to install drivers and root
4. Load CM9 zip into internal memory (onto the ~16 GB of internal my S2 has)
5. Boot into revoery
6. Install Zip
7.Reboot
I am a tad congfused though. do i connect my phone via USB, open superoneclick on my computer, and use it to load the CM9 zip onto my phone?
How do i install zip once im back in recovery?
thanks!

To get a custom recovery and be able to flash custom roms (cm obviously included), all u need to do is flash a kernel for our phone model as all our kernels have recovery built in. Just find a siyah.tar file (gokhanmoral has some on his site in .Tar format), download it to your computer, then find a rom you want to flash and download it to your phone. Make sure you have Odin installed on your computer, and the correct drivers installed for your phone. Also make sure usb debugging is turned on on the phone. Put the phone into download mode, open Odin on pc, plug phone into pc, open the pda link in Odin, select the siyah file, and flash that puppy. Then when done, disconnect from pc, reboot phone to your new recovery, and wipe data / factory reset. Then flash your rom!

I do not understand some of this, does odin work for Macs? Also, when you say "download (the ROM (in my case CM9)) it to your phone" do you mean use the phone browser to find and download it? Or what?

Odin only works with Windows pc's, so on Mac you'll need to use Heimdall. Probably the Heimdall command line version is best. You can download the firmware of choice to your computer, and then transfer it to the phone over USB, or use dropbox and wifi, or something like that. You can download it directly to the phone if you prefer.
The guide referenced by Vpr2006 has instructions for using Heimdall as well as Odin. It give you the basics. In general you should 1) root 2) install custom kernel 3) use ClockworkMod Recovery to install your firmware of choice.

This approach to customizing your phone involves the following steps:
JANUARY 2013 ROOTING UPDATE: In mid December of 2012, Samsung released an over-the-air update for the SGH-I777UCLK3, taking the operating system to version 4.0.4. Around the same time, XDA developer Chainfire released an application called ExynosAbuse APK which can be used to root the SGH-I777 with SuperSU, without the need to use a PC. ExynosAbuse APK is the best, and probably the only practical method for rooting UCLK3 without flashing some other distribution. In addition, it seems that this application is a good way to root any phone running 4.x operating systems, and possibly phones running 2.x operating systems as well. Be aware, there are possible risks involved with using this application. Please thoroughly read and understand Chainfire's thread linked above before using his application.

My S2 Is currently on UCLK3 so i clicked the link there (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35512626).
I do not seem to see specific instructions as to how to go about this though, and I don't think it specifies how to install CM9 specifically.
Also, I have a mac, but I can access a PC if need be.
Thanks

If you don't feel comfortable using the ExynosAbuse Exploit by Chainfire to get root access on your existing firmware, then flash the [Heimdall][Odin][Stock][Root]UCLE5 Stock ICS with Root which is 4.0.3 ICS with root included.
Once you have root, use the instructions in that thread to install a custom kernel which contains ClockworkMod Recovery, preferably by installing Mobile Odin Lite or Mobile Odin Pro. I would suggest you use the "AJ Newkirk/Siyah v3.3.3d ICS" kernel, which is somewhat old but will only be on there long enough for you to flash your firmware of choice. Then enter recovery and flash your firmware, following the instructions in the OP of the firmware thread. As previously stated, you will need to use Heimdall on the Mac, or borrow a Windows PC and use Odin.

[Q] Problems installing CWM recovery onto P7500

Hello I bought my P7500 in Malaysia from an independent computer store (not tied to a carrier) about 2 years ago and I recently decided that I'd like to check out CM before I buy my next android device to see if it's important to me to be able to have CM on my next tablet. I took the files from the CM's wiki on how to install CM on the P4. I'm able to get into download mode on the tablet and successfully install the CWM according to Odin 1.85. After I reboot though I still have the standard Samsung recovery binary and when I attempt to repeat the steps it says;
Reason: Force Key,
Secure Mode: Secure,
Check Signature: Check,
Custom Binary download: No (0 count),
Current binary: Samsung Official.
I'm using the official cable that came with the device (sometimes it's finicky about connecting) and Windows downloaded the drivers for it when I first connected the device to my PC. The only other thing I can think of is it has an official version on ICS 4.0.4.
Any help on why I'm having these issues.
Once you've installed cwm, then boot into recovery. Its the other icon when you boot into download mode. It should show a customized recovery rather than the stock one. I believe the infos you gave was from download mode right?

Ok I figured it out. The problem seems to be that Odin needed to be restarted for each of the 3 different files that the CM instructions are telling you to install with it. I decided to try it in reverse recovery.tar.md5 -> modem.tar.md5 -> bootloader.tar.md5 and noticed only the 1st file is loaded properly. So if your following the instructions at wikic[dot]cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_p4 then you need to know to restart Odin between each file.
Actually I think you should read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2074202. It has all the information you need and contains the right gapps for our device if you want to flash cm10.1.

[SOLVED] Back / Search button not working by XDA_Mod

Hi community,
I recently got a samsung galaxy s2 i777 at&t , everything was working just fine until i installed oneplus mod!
I dunno that a rom could turn my i777 in a i9100 when I tried to flash any other i777 rom I get the magic message, this it's not a i777 complatible rom use a i9100 one or something like that.
model number
gt i9100
baseband
i777ucmd8
Is that a reason I can't answer phone calls?
BTW my intention is to turn it back to be a i777 model how it is supposed to be
I strongly recommend that you avoid that site. We have had many, many reports of serious issues, and some even catastrophic, on the I777 from flashing things from that site.
The latest stock distribution for this phone is I777UCMD8 (the same as your baseband / modem). I would suggest that you flash the full version of that stock firmware, which you can get from the Download Repository.
After returning the phone to stock, if you want to customize it, I recommend that you stick with firmware that you can obtain on this forum in the development section. If you are interested in customizing the phone, you can root with framaroot using the Aragorn exploit. You can use Mobile Odin free or Mobile Odin Pro to install a custom kernel with custom recovery, and then flash the custom firmware of your choice from your recovery. You should be able to find plenty of information in the forums here.

Never flashed firmware before. Should I go with the "I777UCMD8 Stock Binaries (Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean):" firmware cuz I have that modem already?
You should use the I777UCMD8 firmware because it is the latest version of the operating system available for this phone.
Since you don't have experience flashing, here are detailed instructions.
Download the 7zip file archive and extract the contents. You will have a file ending in .tar.md5. That is the file you will select in the pda slot in Odin.
How to use stand-alone Odin3 to flash firmware:
Follow and recheck each of the following steps. Do them in order listed, as some steps are dependent on previous steps. Instructions are for Odin3 v1.85. (Recommended for this phone. There is a link in the Download Repository.) It should work with any version of Odin, but some details, like color of items, may be different.
1.) Open Odin on the Windows Desktop.
2.) Have the USB cable plugged into USB port on the computer, but *Not* plugged in to the phone.
3.) Shut the phone off.
4.) While holding down the vol+ & vol- keys, plug micro-usb plug into phone.
5.) In Odin, you should get the yellow box under where it says ID:COM with the text 0:[COMx], and in the Message area, <ID:0/00x> Added!! where x is some number, usually 1-8.
6.) In Odin, make sure Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time are checked and all other items are not checked.
7.) Click on the PDA button. Browse to the tar file you want to install and select it so its path appears in the text edit box next to the button.
8.) Make sure the check box next to the PDA button is checked.
9.) Click the Start button.
10.) You should see the green progress bar advancing.
11.) When complete, you will get a PASS (or FAIL if unsuccessful).

Will be stock, just like it came out of the box, only Jelly Bean operating system instead of Ice Cream Sandwich. Not rooted, fully stock.
You can use the phone without further customization, the same way you would if you picked it up new.
If you want to flash custom firmware onto the phone, you will need to root using Framaroot with the Aragorn exploit, which you can find on XDA Developers forums, and then use Mobile Odin free or Mobile Odin Pro to install a custom kernel with Clockwork Mod recovery. Then you can flash the custom firmware of your choice.
If you want to customize and need detailed instructions, I'll be happy to help. However, I am going out of town for a few days. The next time I will be checking the forums is next Monday.
For what it's worth I'll be around and can help if need be.

If you don't get the yellow square, and "Added!!" in the message area, then Odin is not recognizing the phone. This may be because you do not have the Samsung USB driver for Mobile Phones installed on your computer, or it may be because you do not have a good connection between the phone and the PC.
Go to Control Panel | Uninstall or Change a Program (Windows 7 - or similar on other OS) and look to see if you have "SAMSUNG USB Driver for Mobile Phones" in the list. If not, you need to install it. There is a link to an xdaDevelopers forum thread for the driver in the Download Repository, or you can download it directly from the Samsung site.
If the SAMSUNG USB Driver is already there, you should probably assume that you have a bad cable or bad connection. Try another cable, another port on the PC, especially one connected directly to the mother board if it is a desktop pc. Or even another PC.
In some extreme cases, you might have to uninstall the SAMSUNG USB Driver, reboot the PC, re-install the Driver, and reboot again.

Boot into stock recovery and perform a wipe data/factory reset.
To boot recovery: with the phone off, hold down all three buttons vol- vol+ pwr, until the logo screen appears the second time, then release.

Awesome, reset factory worked like charm. It boot and the buttons are fixed
Now, should I be able to install CM 10.1.3 from the scratch? Cuz I got my phone rooted from before this AT&T flash.
I was planning to use this version:
http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=i777&type=stable
with the Gapps:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Google_Apps
But I don't know if I need another CW recovery, or root it again (if I need root I'll look for the info on the forum, I won't keep bothering with this noob questions anymore guys).
EDIT: I've check that my phone is not rooted, I checked downloading the TERMINAL and try it to use the $ su command and it didn't work, so I think it's not rooted.
Which will be the easiest way to root the phone?
from the ones listed on our forum, cuz there are a couple of links not working already.

Root the phone with Framaroot using the Aragorn exploit. You can find it on XDA. Link.
After rooting, use Mobile Odin (Pro from the play store, or the Lite version from the xda thread, Link) to install AJK v4.9 No Swap kernel. See post #5 in this thread for additional instructions.

Just read the post on the #5 of the thread that u sent me but I didn't understand it very well.
Then, after rooting and installing Mobile Odin, you should flash the AJK v4.9 No Swap kernel. Download the CWM flashable .zip file, open it in an archiving program such as 7zip, and extract the boot.img. You can not flash the zip file with mobile odin, so you will need to flash the boot.img, which Mobile Odin will recognize. However, since you are not flashing the support files for the kernel, if you boot into the stock jellybean system at this point, the buttons will not work. So, after flashing the kernel with Mobile Odin, you should boot directly into recovery, and flash the full AJK v4.9 zip file to get the buttons working with the stock firmware. Or you can flash the custom firmware of your choice at this point and skip the above step.

I installed mobile odin ready to flash, got the "AJK v4.9 NoSwap" cuz I have AT&T stock JB
but in the installations instructions they used the CWM to flash the kernel, I think, and I'll be using mobile odin, but reading ur post carefully I don't got what u mean from here "...Download the CWM flashable .zip file, open it in an archiving program such as 7zip, and extract the boot.img. You can not flash the zip file with mobile odin, so you will need to flash the boot.img, which Mobile Odin will recognize. Should I just need to use mobile odin flash the "AJK v4.9 NoSwap" then reboot and boot into CWM recovery to start to install the CM 10.1.3 and then the GAPPs, etc? or am I skipping some important part of the process?
He's saying you need to physically extract the boot.img from the zip file and flash that via Mobile Odin, then immediately reboot recovery and flash the entire zip file. This convoluted method is only because Mobile Odin can't flash zip files, hence the need to flash the boot.img.
I'll be out of town for the coming week, and won't be on the forums much if any. If you have additional questions, Steve can probably help you.

Let me put it in my thoughts if I got the idea.
1- unzip the AJK v4.9 No Swap kernel and flash the boot.img
2- REBOOT the device into recovery mode (vol+ plus vol - plus power)
3- (no clean cache, no factory reset) select an unzip file and pick AGAIN the AJK v4.9 No Swap kernel.zip and flash it again.
4- then? should I reboot and start the clean CM installation? (clean cache, reset factory, select CM 10.1.3, clean cache, gapps, reboot?)

I appreciate every single minute that you took answering my noob questions.
The 4 steps you list are correct, but don't forget to wipe the /system partition before you flash CM. That's a big part of a "clean" flash.

[Q] Can't Boot/Reboot into CWM Recovery

I want to put a new ROM on my phone but I'm having trouble booting/rebooting into CWM, not sure what I need to do to get it to work. Here are all the methods I've tried...
Using ROM Manager to install new ROM package:
Try to do ROM Installation, select packages and options I want
Press "Reboot and install" button
Phone starts to reboot
Samsung logo flashes once
CyanogenMod start screen comes up, boots into OS, not Recovery mode. Nothing was wiped, installed, or changed at all.
Using ROM Manager to reboot into recovery:
Go into ROM Manager, select "Reboot into Recovery"
Phone starts to reboot
Samsung logo flashes once
Samsung logo flashes twice
CyanogenMod start screen comes up, boots into OS, not Recovery mode.
Rebooting from Power menu on the phone:
Choose "Reboot," then "Recovery" from Power menu
Phone starts to reboot
Samsung logo flashes once
Samsung logo flashes again
CyanogenMod start screen comes up, boots into OS, not Recovery mode.
Power down, then hold Power + Vol Up + Vol Down:
Phone starts to reboot
Continue holding these 3 buttons
Samsung logo flashes once
Continue holding these 3 buttons
Samsung logo flashes twice
Let go of the buttons because it should now be booting into Recovery
Samsung logo flashes third time
CyanogenMod start screen comes up, boots into OS, not Recovery mode.
And here are my phone particulars:
Code:
[B]Recovery[/B]
ClockworkMod 6.0.1.0
[B]Kernel version[/B]
3.0.64-RB11-SHIFT-1.1
[B]CyanogenMod version[/B]
11-20140402-UNOFFICIAL-i777
Any ideas what I need to do to boot into Recovery?
I don't think Rom Manager is compatible with the SGH-I777. Do a Google search on mobile Odin and install the shift kernel again.
You can't use rom manager. There's a warning thread stickied at the top of this forum titled "[A] Rom Manager ******WARNING READ THIS BEFORE******."
The answer depends on which phone you have, SGH-I777 OR SGH-S959G (the straight talk version) for which see this thread.
State which phone you have, and we can give you additional guidance as needed.

I have the SGH-i777. I thought by posting in this forum it would be implied that that's the one I'm talking about. Sorry for not being clear on that.

The SGH-S959G has exactly the same hardware as the SGH-I777. The only difference is that the partition table is slightly different. Those who have that phone also use this forum. Since you have the SmartTalk icon in your profile, I thought there was some chance that you might have that instead of the I777.
On the SGH-I777, the recovery is compiled into the kernel, and therefore is loaded into the kernel partition with the kernel. There is not a recovery in the recovery partition, and that is why rom manager will not work with this phone, and in fact has caused some rather severe problems for some folks.
Since you currently have cyanogenmod, and can not boot into recovery, you will need to use desktop Odin with download mode to load a new firmware onto your phone. So your best route will be to flash the phone back to stock using desktop Odin, root with Framaroot using the Aragorn exploit, and then use Mobile Odin Pro, or Mobile Odin Lite to flash a custom kernel containing ClockworkMod recovery. Then you can flash whichever custom firmware you want.
You can find the stock firmware in the Download Repository, which is also linked in my signature. Flash the I777UCMD8 Stock Binaries (Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean) which is near the bottom of the page. Odin3 v1.85 is recommended for this phone, although any version of Odin should work. There is a link for it near the top of the page. Download mode is, while powered off, hold pwr and vol - while plugging the usb cable into the phone.
Then, after rooting and installing Mobile Odin, you should flash the AJK v4.9 No Swap kernel. Download the CWM flashable .zip file, open it in an archiving program such as 7zip, and extract the boot.img. Ah, gotcha - thanks for clearing that up.
Thanks for these very clear instructions - I used them to successfully flash the UCMD8 binary from the Download Repository, and I'll be leaving that on for now as I'm not using this phone too much anymore. The only thing I also had to do was, after flashing the binary, boot into the stock recovery and do a factory reset + wipe cache from there, then restart. It worked flawlessly after that.
Thanks so much for your help, creepy!
