[Q] SD card partition "gone" after new ROM install - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bought a 4GB sd card and made a 512MB partition so I could link my apps on it using Link2SD app. It was all nice until my Huawei U8110 had an error on dialer so I had to do Factory reset and decided if I would do it why shouldn't I install new ROM. I installed Pro Celestial v2. It was all nice, I used Titanium backup to backup my apps and restore it later, but when I installed new ROM all the apps were there, but not linked. If I would backup them using TB then the link would work, but then they would take twice the space on that 512MB partition. So I decided to format that partition and start linking apps on it from the start.
I used Mini Tool Partition Wizard to format that partition. Both of my partitions were FAT32. But, when I rebooted my phone, there were no signs of partition, even later on PC. Just the 3,5GB partition was there, even TB didn't detect that there is another partition. It seems like that partition is gone, and I can't bring it back. I can't format my sd card because that option in settings->sd card menu is unclickable. Can anyone help me bring my all 4gb from sd card back?

Have you tried formatting your SD card via PC?

How to create an sd-ext partition?

I am trying to create an sd-ext partiton so I can move applications and backup to that partition on my 4GB external SD card.
I've got ROM Manager 4.8.0.8 but when I select Partiton SD card it reboots and tries to reformat but I don't see anything on the Card just a LOST.DIR folder. I can't read the system messages when in Recovery mode cos it all happens so fast.
I tried via ADB and booted into recovery and selected the option to partition manually but still nothing. I reformatted the card with FAT32. Nothing.
Am I doing something wrong?
Just throwing something out there. Try rebooting into Clockwork Recovery. In CWR, go to Advanced -> Partition SD Card -> Select the size. If it doesn't work, it shouldn't reboot your device (If I remember correctly). Take a look at the log (Advanced -> Show log).
Hopefully this helps a bit.
Hmmm he's right, you have to flash cwm first.
If your device is not listed in rom manager, find cwm for your device on xda and connect your device to the pc in fastboot mode, extract the zip and copy recovery.zip to the folder where fastboot on your pc is and give the command:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
after flashing cwm,do as suggested
Also, you can partition it by downloading Easeus partition manager on your pc and choose the ext2 partition as the second one and a size of 512 mb is enough in most cases
go into CWM and select advanced thn move onto partition SD card
it would ask u how much space to partition after that select swap size as 642 or above and wait for few minutes.... remember tot ake a backup of ur SD card as all the data would be cleared while partitioning
Thanks. The first problem was that the latest version of ClockworkMod Recovery 4.2 doesn't see my external SD card. No idea why. I used the 3.2 version which does see the external card and formatted the card first (after backing up!!). Then Advanced Partition SD card but I get a message saying : "Too many people have bricked their devices by doing this. Therefore this feature has been disabled."
I tried another Recovery Manager - Rogue Recovery and that showed messages saying it was formatting. I rebooted but when I looked at the SD card - nothing. However, I downloaded Easeus partition manager (looks good) and it showed that there is an sd-ext with a lost+found folder in it.
Is that normal? If yes then why didn't someone say that it would be invisible?!! If not, what happened?
Seems there are problems with the SD card. When I try to point TitaniumBackup to my SD card it sees the folders as Read Only. http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=18559 and http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=18501. It was obviously a bit silly to call internal storage the same name as an external SD card. HD as in hard drive (I know its not) would be better. Or just Storage or whatever. NO doubt people have been accidentally formatting their internal memory instead of the card and that's why it was disabled in Clockwork Recovery. And by the way I'm using the hacked Android 4 - so the problem is still there even in 4 (Ice Cream)
The easiest way to get sd card partitioned is using Mini Partition Tool on PC.
Dikirim dari WT19i gue pake xda premium
Now does cwm also do the ext partition? and if not what program would work well I have a 2gb sd card for my samsung admire and I want to make a ext partition so i can move some more files to it.And later get larger card up to 16gb and do the same.
Thanks,
Doug

[SOLVED] Problems with SD card

Recently (a few hours ago) I bought a new SD memory card to upgrade. Since I used Adfad's N2 Cyanogen mod, I partitioned my old SD card (2GB), and created 512MB ext3 partition to expand my phones storage. Also I use s2e for App2sd. I backed everything up in clockwork recovery (5.0.2.0), i turned the phone down, took out old card, and inserted a new one (8GB). Booted into recovery and partitioned SD card, but this time I created an 1GB ext3 partition. Turned the phone off, copied data from old card to new one, on laptop, via card reader. Returned it to phone, booted into recovery, restored backups, successfully, and booted the phone. Phone now recognizes new card, but can't mount sd-ext partition. I can't access to most of my apps, I presume that those are the ones which were on sd-ext partition, like market, superuser and many others. Installed the s2e, but it doesn't recognize sd-ext partition. Is there any way to fix this? I'm clueless . I tried the old card, everything works. Any type of help will be appreciated. Is there any way to transfer data from one card to another via PC? Including ext3 and linux-swap partitons?
Since there were no answer, I did a clean reinstall and backup with titanium. It looks like there is on easier way to switch SD cards.

[Q] bigger internal SD card partitions not deleted by installing a Rom?

Hi.
I exchanged the internal SD card with an 8 GB.
I did this by copying both partitions of the original sd card onto the new one in GParted.
Rom is booting normally.
Just to clear things up:
The internal partitions are not deleted by installing a rom, right?
They can just be formatted, but not changed in size by installing a Rom?

[Q] Link2SD - Partitioning issues

Still looking for some insight and/or answers on this one...please help if u can!! Thanks!!
Phone details:
Metro PCS LGMS769
Android v 4.1.2
ROM LGMS769e (stock)
I have finally partitioned my SD card (16GB) successfully using MiniTool Partition Wizard tool. I created two FAT 32 partions (G=11.75GB DATA and *.=2.87 APPS). I had problems when creating an EXT2 partition...Link2SD wouldn't recognize it or mount the card.
Was able to successfully mount the card after creating 2 FAT32 partitions so I went with that for now. Several questions though...
1) I was unable to actually move to SDcard using "native App2SD method" with an error telling me that App2SD not supported by my device because it has a primary external storage which is emulated from the internal storage. Instead had to link the app in order to move its files to the card. What does this mean and why can't I physically move? Also, what is actually happening when I create links?
2) Apps appeared to be on the external card afterward when I went to System/storage and reviewed space usage. I could not, however tell whether they were on the DATA or the APPS partition from File Manager OR after taking the card out and looking at it from my PC. There were a couple of l directories created (LGBackup and LOST.DIR) but all appeared to be empty. WHY?
3) After dismounting and taking the card out to explore on PC and then putting card back in the phone it was remounted automatically however all apps are now taking up space on my internal drive and external storage is completely. Also, all my home screen widget configs are empty with all listed under "APPS" utility. Can anyone explain what's going on and how to correct?

Dan,
I don't think Windows would recognize a Linux partition...which is what EXT is. That's why u can't move data to that partition at this time. MiniTool doesn't even SEE your EXT partition?? If that's the case how do u know it's an EXT partition in the first place? Perhaps u could post an image of the MiniTool screen? If it CAN see the partition I would delete it and recreate it with at least a portion being FAT32.

jakman: Because when I Partitioned my 32GB SD Card I was reading a XDA thread that said to Partition it using Ext4 as being the best Partition to use. When I look at Minitool it shows the Partitions that says Disk 8 read only ( Capacity 5.00GB for 1st partition and 24.72FGB for 2nd partition, used GB's then under File System Ext4 for both partitions, Type Primary both partitions, Status None. ). When I Hi-Light partition-1 it comes up on the left side with Actions and Wizards. Under Wizards the Choices are Copy Partition Wizard, Copy Disk Wizard, Partition Recovery Wizard. No other Choices the task bar at the top is grayed out. When I Hi-Light one of the other drives it adds a whole bunch of choices like Format Partition - Show Partition Properties and other actions that I can take Etc. I tried Partition Recovery Wizard it just tells me what files that can be recoverd. the Delete Icon is Missing. So there is no way i can delete the partitions and choose FAT 16/32 File System. When I first Partitioned the card Ext2, Ext3, Ext4, Fat 16, & Fat 32 were the File Systems offered. So do you Know of another Partition App that might enable me to Delete the partition and set the File System to Fat 32 thats FREE or doesn't Cost to Much as I'm on a fixed Income. Ive search the Forums but no body seems to have had this problem in the past or they found a solution else where and didn't post there Solution. Thanks I hope maybe you or some on else might know of a solution and help me as I don't want to have to buy another 32GB SD Card. Dan Mericle Sr danvidman
can you use minitool partition wizard to recovery your 32gb card? You can use the function Recovery Partition to scan card. have you set the partition to primary after change its files system? maybe this is main reason why it cant be recognized.

Link2sd mount lost after rebooting

hello,
currently I am reinstalling my now around one year old honor 5x.
Since I bought it, it was on b130 and could not update because of a custom TWRP recovery and root access.
So now I sat down, installed a stock b140, updated to b330 (android 6) and then installed CyanogenMod (Nightly). Many problems occurred on the way but until now I found all my questions answered in old threads.
Now the system runs smoothly and I can start configuring it. This includes Link2sd in order to be able to force move large apps to my sd card and linking them to the system. But this time I have quite a lot problems with this.
I started by doing the exact same thing like last time:
shut down the phone, take SD Card out of the phone and plug into computer
create around 80% primary partition fat32 and 19% primary partition ext4 (also tested ext2) (the 1% is unused space)
Then plug the sd card back in and start the phone
ES Datei Explorer now shows three "spaces": the internal space, the large fat32 sd partition and the small ext4 sd partition (all three can be written and read on)
Now start Link2SD. It recognices the second partition and askes what filesystem there is. I choose "ext4" and press OK
Here is my main problem: The app gives me an error:
Code:
[B]Error in mount script[/B]
Could not create mount script.
mount: '/dev/block/vold/public:179_66'->'/data/sdext2': Invalid argument
So the mount script could not be created and in the threads on xda there are some possible "solutions":
trying different filesystems: ext2, ext3, ext4 -> I tried all of them
clearing dalvik-cache -> I also tried that
formatting the sd card inside the phone with a app called "AParted" -> no help at all
Make Link2sd to a system app -> I did this by moving the folder from Link2sd from /app/data/ to /app/system/ (I hope this is enouph to be a system app, but Link2sd is starting normal after a reboot and is also not listed anymore under "user apps", instead now I can find it unter "system apps" ... so I think this worked fine)
...
The interesting part now is, that I can go in my system settings of android -> Spaceusage (don't know how it is exactly called in english) -> and then unmount only the ext4 partition of the sd card (the fat32 is still mounted).
After I do that, Link2SD can create the mount script !!!
The dialog after creating the mount script says, that I have to reboot the system in order to finish the process. But when I do so, after the reboot the "normal" mount of the system is there again and Link2sd is asking for the filesystem again. So no "special" mount for linking possible.
So now my question:
How can I fix this issue? Can I
force android to stop mounting the ext4 on booting and let Link2sd's script do the mounting?
do I have to set special permissions to the created mounting script?
Is there a other way to make Link2sd work properly? Do I missed something? (last time it worked this way, but maybe something changed due the time?)
is Link2sd maybe incompatible with android 6.0?
Thanks for any help and any suggestion.
greetings

OH MY GOD .. That long to read ,
Install Cm Nightly Last Version with Recovery .
Format Ur SD Card throw ur laptop \PC
When u boot to New CM go Settings > Storage > Format SD Card after that u will be asked to use it as internal or external , use it as internal so it will be added to ur internal 10GB without using app2sd any more =) ..
*Recommendation : use Class 10 SD card only otherwise ur phone will become slow ! .
GD luck ! =)
thanks very much. At first, this did not work. But after reinstalling CM I could use your method.
But two questions:
The App ES File Explorer just shows one internal storage. Correct so far, bu I have 10GB intern and 60GB extern SD, so there should be 70GB internal storage shown. But ES FIle Explorer just shows 60GB internal storage. Is this a bug? Do I have to worrie?
Under the system settings -> storage I can see the internal 10GB and the external 60GB seperately. Does the system take care of the "migrate files" it self in order to lower the usage of the real internal storage? Or do I have to go the the settings time to time in order to click the "migrate files" manually?
greetings and thanks for any help so far

i wouldnt recomend doing a partition, as cm always did it for me, it recognizes only the ext4 partition and says cant mount as link2sd, so if you want link to sd, then try not patitioning the card, worked fine on mine once..

ok, thanks a lot. The system is working fine now, but I now wanted to create a backup from the fully furnished phone and TWRP is not able to do so. On the internal memory TWRP says "not enouph space" and on the external (/external_sd/) it saysy out of memory. So how can I now create a backup?
Before the new external sd extension for the internal memory i was able to create backups, but with the new setting it seems impossible.

ok, in theory there must be two partitions on the sd card:
most of the memory as extention for the internal android storage
a little free space as fat32 for backups and as "external sd card"
But I am not able to achieve this. I tried this:
first idea: formatting on computer, then put it in phone and select "extend for internal storage" for the first partition. but then the phone formats the whole sd card and the second fat32 partition disappears
second idea: backup the extended partition, then formatting and creating the two partitions and restore the backup to the first partition. but the "android extended partition" can not be read by my programs. So how can I achieve this? Or is there an other way?

I already used this program. It is a very useful tool, but it didn't work.
I did it like the following:
put sd out of phone into computer
start MiniTool and wipe
delete all partitions
create two new partitions: first a primary fat32 at the beginning of the sd card (10GB) and on the rest at the end create a second primary ext4 partition (50GB)
wait until finish, unplug from pc and back into phone
reboot phone
in the android menu under "storage" klick on the 50GB ext4 partition
over the menu klick on "use as internal storage extention", but then he warns that the fully sd card will be formatted. when I klick no, he returns to the previews menu. If I klick yes, he creates a 60GB unreadable "android_extended" partition and adds this to the internal storage. So my little fat32 partition will get lost
What am I doing wrong?
