[Q] Rooting: Did my research still not sure about it. - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to root my HTC Thunderbolt. I've read up on rooting, but there's so many people saying so many things I'm not sure which option is best. I want to do a one-click root. What's the best/most efficient way to go about doing that?

Rooting is extremely worth it. I'm sure you can find a one click root on these forums, if not google it. I personally prefer doing it through a terminal. But that's probably because I feel more accomplished when I do it myself lol.

[Q] Rooting "A shot in the dark"

Have been reading any and all Rooting Posts and I have come to the conclusion that as of now, Most, if not all of the Rooting techniques are a shot in the dark.
If there is one good way that is reliable and doesn't screw up one thing or another than I have not seen it.
Example......Superoneclick....works on one phone but not the next....Roms....need more fixes to get to work than Microsoft.....
Tell me is there a proven way to unlock the bootloader, Root the phone and get Gingerbread to work fully ?
I may be new to this site and believe me I would love to have a open phone....But I have other things to do than F around trying to get a already KickAss phone to work.....Just saying....

you need to do more reading, no one uses superoneclick for the atrix... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1165791
Read the stickies..
Have you ever opened the android dev section?
Almost everything is in the sticky thread of clown.. With faqs guides etc..
Unlock your bootloader depending what atrix you have(att or international), then install the tenfars port of CWM4, and then you can root using the CWM root method..

To build on your Microsoft comment...............Some software is not compatible with all versions of Windows. The Atrix came out with Windows 95, has made it to XP, and with GB will be Windows 7. If you are not happy with the devs work, what they have done for everyone, and can't filter through the threads to get what you want, maybe you should get an iPhone and stick Cydia on it!......Or get a Windows phone because you won't have to "fix" anything on it!
If you want help, then you have started out the wrong way. Your post needs to be objective, and not flaming all the work others have done because you can't implement any of it, and are confused.
Root, ROM's, etc., do not need a bunch of fixes............you just have to READ so you know which ones work together for what you want. If you had actually taken the time, you would know that the bootloader has been unlocked, root is working, and GB is awesome. You just have to check the instructions for what you want on your Atrix, whether it be AT&T, Orange, Bell, etc.
Personally, I am on an AT&T Atrix 4G with unlocked bootloader, rooted, with GB 4.5.91, and have absolutely no complaints ot problems!
Since you don't want to F around, watch that door................it's heavy and swings closed fast.........wouldn't want it to hit you between the buttocks on the way out!
Bell ATRIX, unlocked bootloader, rooted, running 2.3.4. No problems

One ROOT to Rule them All??????

Guys, I know you know your stuff and you can really help out a noob like me but............
is there ONE root or page that can have all the required links so I can get this
3D rooted. I've read a few topics and it seems that some Devs have different ways to root and I dont know what CMD is.
I'm coming from the Hero and I learned how to flash to get rooted.
Thanks.

Not really. Its not difficult at all. Just read and it will make sense. Its similar to the og evo root method. Hit the button, flash recovery, reboot.
I Haz 3D
Point is, Just do it. You will learn a lot from just doing while trying not to fathom the "big words" or "strange names" for different stuff. YES, something CAN happen, but usually follow the steps and all will be fine. When I first rooted my first phone I was not really linguistic in the lingo we use now for rooting such devices, it reminded me of the ole AOL WAREZ days and those silly but fun AUto programs we used in the chat rooms. I say... Take the plunge.
EDIT: Don't be lazy (like me) and NOT read it. There is no ONE click easy method if this is your first time. Once you have rooted this phone though your ext and future roots will eb easier and make more since.

You really should READ. A lot.
There is no 'best'. There are indeed several methods to gain root access, but one isn't necessarily better than another. Think of it like a switch. Is there a 'best' way to turn on your kitchen light? There are indeed multiple methods, some more challenging than others...but if the goal is to be able to see and navigate your kitchen to get to the fridge...does it matter if you flip the switch with your thumb or index finger, right or left hand, or even your foot? Not really. That's kinda like root.
Root access is a threshold thing, when you get it it's done.
Search with Google, and Youtube...watch and read all of the tutorials, and decide which one you think looks easiest.
What you should find, is that root = big yellow exclamation mark. Try googling 'sgs2 jig'. You should read about that, too. The jig will help you get rid of the yellow triangle syndrome, and it should cost you less than $3 on ebay. If it doesn't work, you might need an old bootloader...another subject to read up on.
If you want to take on the challenge of rooting and modding your phone, you should take on the challenge and not ask strangers to do your homework for you.
Devs here at XDA are AWESOME. They explain everything...in forums, where you can read it. You can also check out sammobile.com, another great site for people with our phone.
Best of luck! Get crackin'!

No worries. Sorry if I was a bit harsh.
Look, check into SuperOneClick and a user named chainfire, in both of those you'll find what you need.
Seems like a lot of trouble for just a VPN. If you've got root afterwards you should think of flashing custom ROMs. That's where the fun stuff happens!
I first tried Ice cream Sandwich at the end of December, and it was awful. But the devs have been working hard on it. I've been running a build that's every bit as stable as stock Gingerbread for 2 weeks now. So many more features. Kicks ass, it does.
Let me know if you have trouble, get stuck or have any specific questions (send a PM). I might not have the answer, but I can point you in the right direction.

Plz go read this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1354487 . . imho, you want to block OTA.
Permanent?
Is there a way to UNroot it?
try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1439630
The phrase "a root" indicates you don't fully understand what root is, which is completely understandable. We all start somewhere.
I highly suggest you read my thread here before you do anything.
OP - I originally got onto these forums a few months ago for the exact same reason: to gain access to the Market. I performed the (very easy) root method outlined in these forums and quickly realized how much of the world I had been missing on my NT. Since I rooted it, I've had an absolute blast with my NT. I know you don't want to actually root your device, but you just may want to consider it in light of how much fun you will have with it.
Just my two cents from a new guy with absolutely no experience with doing stuff like this. It's really been worth it.

What thread to follow for S-OFF & Root?

Sorry guys, I'm normally on top of this. There's just so much out there that I'm thoroughly confused. I'm on 1.13.651RC2, really just want to know what to do and in what order to prevent, as much as possible, google wallet bricking my secure element.
Do I S-OFF first thru lazypanda then install twrp, nandroid, then root? Or can u do it that way? Wow things change so quick. Used the regawmethod previously, but I don't really want to do the HTCdevunlocked bull. Does zedomax work w soff?
I have read all of those threads before, but things changed since I read them. Never accepted the ota, so I should use the old methods then right? Anything I need to be aware of?
I'm good with the technical aspects of it. Just a perfectionist that wants to know the best way to go about it if u will. Sure a lot of u guys know what I'm saying.
Well anywoys help and or a link would be great. Thanks a lot fellerz.

Follow lazy panda to a t you should be fine, there's a post in between 140 and 150 in the thread that a lot of people recommend, i think its post 146.
sent from my LTEvo
Post 475 (by PhxkinMassacre) in the thread is the one most people mention. It's what I followed for multiple phones too.
All of the phones I did were already rooted using the script/instructions at htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-4g-lte-root/how-to-root-htc-evo-4g-lte/
Worked perfect every time.

If you don't want to use HTC dev, here's what I would do:
1. S-OFF w/ lazy panda http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1737123
- DISCLAIMER: I was already dev unlocked and rooted when I used this. I don't think being rooted is a pre-req, but may want to double check the official thread. The main thing is you want to be on a 1.13 based ROM (which it sounds like you are)
- I followed post #475, there is also a link to it in the OP.
- I would recommend copying the contents of your sd card to your PC, then formatting the sd card on your phone. I bricked the first time I used lazy panda, but I was able to unbrick and after I formatted my sd card it worked fine the second time. Be prepared to either dual boot Ubuntu on your PC or create a live boot disc or flash drive in case you need to unbrick.
2. Use zedomax's root method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671577
- This only gives local root (no recovery)
3. Install TWRP
- Boot into the phone normally, install GooManager from the market
- Launch the app, hit menu, select Install OpenRecoveryScript
Then you should be ready to flash whatever you want.
Also if you use the regaw method to root and install twrp in one click you aren't flagged by HTC as he created something like 100 accounts and it randomly cycles between them when unlocking your phone.
At least the way I understand it.
Then when you s-off you'll already have twrp installed.
That's how I did it.

I clearly need to read thru all these threads again. When using regaw method doesn't it clear all data on your phone? Maybe getting mixed up with other stuff.
Man, was hoping I could do this all at work tonight. Not looking like its gonna happen.
Guess I will rent my $25 worth of HTC watch rentals before I can't when I'm rooted. Will feel like I wasted money even tho its free. Hate that feel. Lol

I can't say whether it does or not, but the method I linked to.does not clear data.in your phone. It just gives root.
Recovery & S-Off are separate steps too. All easy though.
