Anyone interested in a 3g uncapper? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK, I can definitely say I love my thunderbolt, but I hate the battery life. I find myself using 4g lte about 5% of the time I use my phone. It seems to be the major thing always killing my battery. I've tried everything from undervolting to never turning up my screen brightness and still turning off the 4g lte is the best way to go. Which brings me to a thread I stumbled upon in the Eris forums for a 3g uncapper. My curiosity got me wondering, so I asked CondemnedSoul if this would work for the t-bolt so we could get a boost in speed without our 4g lte. Needless to say he made a test to try out on liquid 3.0......and it worked better than I hoped! I went from 400 kbps to1400 kbps on average, with it peaking at 2200 kbps. That's a big jump to say the least. And on other phones it was causing a force close of network settings which didn't happen on my t-bolt, and no issues with 4g or adverse affects on battery life.
So my question to you is would this interest anyone else? I have a test for liquid 3.0 if anyone wants to try it out.

When I lived in OKC, I was able to pull around 2000kbps on 3G on my stock rooted t-bolt, and sometimes about 1500kbps in ATL, so I'm not sure how much help this would be...
needless to say, I'm willing to give it a shot.

I'd be interested in this since my area doesn't have LTE yet so I just turned it off

Wow....I only got maybe up to 600 on a constant before I tried this. I also live in a smaller city. Maybe I'll try it on a different ROM before this becomes a actual mod thread, just to make sure that it did make a difference. But that's why I posted this here first to make sure it was gonna work, and also make sure people were interested before I start making them.

the speeds you're getting with your 'uncapping' trick is about what I used to get here before 4G went live.
oddly though, I found the 3G speeds on my Incredible 2 to go a bit faster then on my Thunderbolt.

After reading your comments regarding the speeds you got, I retested both with and without the mod, and now i'm not getting a difference. Why I was getting so low of speeds when I initially tested this I don't know. It would have been better had I researched the average 3g speed before testing (sorry for the newb mistake). So back to square one, but this should work eventually as it works on a lot of devices. I'm really glad I opened this q and a post first instead of rolling out a mod that didn't work.

How many here have their phone using 3g constantly, and what kind of battery life?

I bought my phone cash, thinking that if I did I wouldn't have to get the 25 dollar per month internet, but the guy who I was dealing with on the phone trying to get the basic internet working was talking smack about "Why would someone NOT want 3g on their smartphone?!"
So I ask you guys, do you leave 3g on constantly, why or why not, and if you do what kind of battery life do you get? The 10 dollar internet never worked for me, and I rarely use 3g because of battery drain, just for tethering or big files, though I seem to have wifi around half the time anyways. EDIT: Also, what are you using, stock 2.1, 2.2, or a custom rom, and if a rom which one?
Personally I think the edge service is fast enough that I haven't really cared too much, I just wouldn't mind drawing on some other opinions and thoughts. Maybe I am one of the few smartphone owners who doesn't constantly play with my phone, but if I did I would want the battery to last long enough to play with it..
Edit:
Oh, and in advance, I rarely post here so I don't know if questions like this provoke flame wars or end up through the butterfly effect making small children in india cry themselves to sleep at night.. either way, no flaming please, just curious, thought it may be interesting, and thought it would be a fun thread
I use 3g 100% of the time, battery rocks. Usually 2 days to a charge, 1 if HEAVY use. Been over a day of good use, on 3g, and still at 33.
EDGE is probly fast enough but I get antsy when I have to wait for anything so that's why I use 3g.

I have never once turned my 3g off. I average 1 day 6 hours of battery with moderate use, and have had nearly two days a few times.

I always have my 3g on unless i'm some where where i have no signal. It's one of the key feature of the phone why turn it off?
I get any where from 15 to 25 hours depending on how heavily i use my phone.
Alot of the Vibrant community who have rooted devices and have settled into what will and wont kill your battery average between 15 hours to a full day plus. I myself see with 3g on about 15-17 hours.
Sexy Vibrant featuring Nero V3 w/Voodoo, and FFC installed
3G majority of the time (reception is what changes it to Edge) I get 12-14h battery life with "average" use (corp email set to pull every 30min reading emails ect)
Honestly, the only time I find that the network is draining the battery is when it is constantly trying to switch from "3G" to "Edge" or "Wifi" and back in bad coverage areas. If it's a reliable connection then it shouldn't really tax battery usage when idle.
About 16 hours with about 2-3 hour screen on time.. Several emails syncing plus facebook and twitter.. 100% hpsa coverage

I have noticed that also, alot of my job relies on me moving through very dense facilities and around the county. I lose a significant amount (7-10% an hour driving) where at home it sits 3-6% an hour drain.
I do not have a data plan like OP.
I have Wi-Fi in 80% of the places and time my phone is on. I keep the wi-fi on auto-connect and on all the time. Moderate to heavy usage-12-18 hours battery life.
Hmm, interesting replies and statistics so far, when I was in Daytona I think that I had significant drain because the 3g coverage was spotty at best, but I haven't tried keeping it on since I moved to jacksonville, where the coverage should be much better.
Question I wish I had asked in the original post, are you stock, if so 2.1 or 2.2, or do you use a rom, and if so which one? The guys claiming over 24 hours versus people getting 17.. quite a discrepancy, and I will bet this has something to do with it(besides just amount of use).
I am using 2.2 bionix V rom, and I get 18+ hours of use out of it on my heavier use days, though I think some corrupt files on my phone have gotten my mediaserver system process using tons of processor, killing my battery quicker. I am going to go ahead and keep it on 3g for a few days, and see what kind of difference it makes. Thanks for the feedback.
Tmobile's 3g coverage in jacksonville is pretty good.Heck I get almost 4g speeds here

I just wanted to say.

Thank you to all the wonderful people of xda.
I hated my optimus v out of the box, it had horrible battery life, horrible reception, horrible speeds. After research and lots of reading i was able to get CWM + AOSP Cm7 on it, update the prl to the latest, do the 3g reset thingy and now i have a phone i love. i can leave it all night not charging and only lose a couple of percent, use it during the day and have it last all day and beyond and the 3g doesn't drop anymore and get full strength where i was getting 1 bar. THANKS GUYS! YOUR THE BEST!
Nice way to say thanks, opening a whole new thread. Its no longer when we will run out of space on XDA server. I appreciate you, though.

low gps signal?

ive noticed i my gps signal constantly drops out while navigating and the only way to get it back, is to hold it in the dash with absolutly nothing blocking it overhead. With my OG evo, i did not have any issues whatsoever, always a strong signal. does anyone else have this problem? im considering replacing it, unless its just a software issue that may be fixed in the next firmware update.
Same issue here.

Everyone's issue?
I want to love this phone but it seems im going to return it soon one i get it and get the optimus3d.
I do not want problems with any hardware or antenna.
I have some ideas. In /system/etc/gps.conf there are some lines that look like if changed would help. I changed the intermediate accuracy level to 100, and where it said disable.agps.in.wimax I changed that to false. It may also benefit to change the allowance if intermediate position to zero. And old hack we used to use was to add the line QOS_ACCURACY=16, but I think that's the same value hack as the one I just mentioned. Feel free to try these. I don't use gps much, so my modifications may go unnoticed. Ymmv

Waaahhh. How in the living hell do you know that an UNRELEASED device has "no GPS issues" - for real. Also, have fun with the awesome monthly premium you'll get for AT&T and their awesome network If you can develop a little patience, I would tell you HTC has awesome build quality, and the dev support for this phone is great, so GPS will get better. Maybe not by tuesday, but sometime.

You cant improve hardware with software...you can tweak to make it work a bit better...but it doesmt chance the hardware...
well the thing is, i believe the gps hardware is just fine. its probably the same chip they use in other phones. hopefully were just a few tweaks away.

do you use your Google navigation often? If its an issue thats not widespread, then ill probably just take my phone. I just dont feel like going through the hassle of getting a new phone if the refurb is going to have the same exact issues.
I have the same issue. Constantly losing GPS when I didn't have this issue before in my area on an Epic 4G. Sprint TeleNAV and Google NAV do it.
I’m an extremely heavy GPS user. I used my Evo as my GPS every day for work, and now my Evo 3D. In the year that I had the original Evo, not once did I have an issue. And by an extremely heavy user, I use it to locate 20-40 (depending on the day) locations a day, every day.
I bought the Evo 3D on launch day, for the first week or so the GPS worked great, it lost the signal once or twice, but I ignored it. Then one day it kept losing the signal a lot. I’m talking like 5 times in an 8 mile stretch on the same road. It started taking forever to recalculate, there was an extremely noticeable lag (it would say for example, my next action was a left turn 1.3 miles away when I already passed the road I was supposed to turn on to). Not only did the signal drop out while driving, but it would drop out while just being parked, and then it takes forever to require the signal. And my personal favorite when your five miles into a 17 mile long run ON THE SAME road/highway it will just randomly recalculate. What’s up with that? i assume these are the same type of issues everyone is having?
Now I took the phone back to the Sprint Store, I was within 30 days so they swapped it out for a band new one for free. The new phone worked great for about 2 weeks, and the same issues started happening, but a lot less frequently, it was tolerable, but so far this week it has been pure hell. This afternoon I lost count, but I was up to 157 instances (this week alone) where the GPS has lost the signal, rerouted me randomly or incorrectly, failed to properly update me of my next action, or just took forever to acquire the satellite signal. This week has been extremely aggravating, to say the least.
Here is one thing I noticed this afternoon, I’m not sure if this is just a fluke or what. I always keep my phone connected to a car charger when driving. For some reason I unhooked it and was running on battery, the GPS worked perfectly to get me from my last two stops of the day, back to work, a total of about 60 miles worth of driving. Not one drop out, not one bit of lag. Prior to that I couldn't go 5 miles without some type of problem. Tomorrow, I will be in an area I’m sort of familiar with and won’t need the GPS much, but I’m going to map out my stops anyway just see how it behaves on battery, until the battery gets low. That final 60 miles today took me from 100% to 55%.

Thought it wouldn't matter but.....

Austin just got LTE and my boss just got the skyrocket. Screen seems about the same from what I saw but performance stock wise the ogsII was much faster but internet was smoking. I keep hearing that a rooted and romed skyrocket performs just as good so now the decision to keep the ogsII just got tougher. Anyone else in their 30 day window and considering jumping ship?
Nope.

I had my GSII then switched to the SR for a few weeks. Honestly I like the size of my i777 much better than the SR. I couldn't notice much difference in performance but dev support was another huge factor for me.
Really they're both great devices... just happy to be away from ios once and for all.

ok, thanks for the replies!!
Is there anyway to get better dl/up speed on the ogsII? On the inspire, there were many different radios and APNs that one could use to get good bandwidth. If I could get consistantly get 5mbps down, i'd be more than content.
You could try flashing a different modem. There's a thread in the development section.
There are some TCP buffer tweaks in my kernel that might help.
The only thing the SR has to offer is faster data when it's actually working - which is apparently not something you can count on with the SR, I've been seeing lots of reports of problems with data dropping and poor battery performance.
Just flashed kj1 with your keranl entropy but I still don't see the speed my inspire used to get. I could get 4 down consistently on the inspire but only see 2 down on gs2

battery life is pretty bad (like 4-6% an hour idle, 10+% with light usage)
i have not had ANY network connectivity problems, but what is the common factor in those complaining of network loss? do they have LTE in their area, or are they strictly on fauxg?

dont forget, i am in an LTE area, i have my wifi off and running touchdown for my exchange email (set to poll every 10 minutes)
i have had much better battery life from my OG GS2, running unnamed rom with the same setup, aside from LTE of course.
if you live in an LTE area and want LTE, go skyrocket, if you dont live in an LTE area or expect to get it in the coming months, go OG GS2.
aside from the battery life (which doesnt matter much to me since i always have chargers handy) its a good phone, despite what others here feel about it.
it is true, that its not as fast in benchmarks, but after loading up my own custom rom on my skyrocket, it can hang with my GS2 running unnamed in usage, but it flies when it comes to downloading/browsing the web. i like the physical feel of the OG GS2 better too. if i didnt have LTE in my area, i wouldnt have the skyrocket, lol.

I have an inspire and the gs2 is always faster with data here. Mostly because it gets way better reception. I lived in tribalart's radio thread flashing radio/ril combo's trying to get that damn thing to have a decent signal. It isn't the phone either because i have have 2 inspires, one early build the other a late nd they both suck signal strength wise.
I do notice that the speetest app is way off on my gs2 but in the site it's right

I had the SR for about a week. Living in a non-LTE area, I found the battery to be weak. I could stretch it out to 18 hours if I only used the phone for reading email, but as soon as I started using the phone as a phone, tried to do any web browsing, or just playing around, then battery life dropped.
With the SII, I can stretch to 36 hours with only email reading, and easily go 18 to 24 while actually using the phone for phone calls and whatever else I have the silly thing for.
The screen resolution thing is really not an issue. Compare the PPI with your computer monitor and you might suddenly stop seeing "jagged" characters on your phone (or you'll never stop seeing them on your computer monitor.)
Physical size was a minor annoynace (but an annoyance still) for me. The SR just barely went over the threshold of being comfortable for me. (Of course, I'd get over that if I could have a Note.)
CIQ is/was a big deal for me. I can not and will not support a device that contains that rootkit, even if I can remove it. The ONLY way I have to influence AT&T is with my money, and by returning a CIQ device (SR) and buying a non-CIQ device (SII), I've given the strongest message I can (short of terminating my service.)

Tethering Speeds A Lot Slower After JB Update

I tether a lot on my phone, I’m not using foxfi or any third party, I’m using the stock built in one. While i was on ICS i was getting tethered speeds of around 3-6mb down and 2-4mb up and ping from 60-80.
i made the switch to the pulled OTA jelly bean two days ago and i was tethering yesterday and i noticed it was going extremely slow, so i thought, oh maybe I’m on 3g right now, checked the phone, i was on 4g. Restarted phone, and started to do speed test. I was getting high pings of around 120-150 down of .5-.8mb and up of about .2mb
Thought was due to high traffic, so i run speed test today on my computers and the results are the same. Ran speed test on phone I’m getting 50-70 ping 2-4 down 1-3 up.
I did read online that other phones (not razrz) had this issue when going to JB as well. But all the ones I was reading were from people on roms, so I don’t know if this is the same.
I’m going to continue to test speeds every day to see if there is any improvement just in case it is heavy traffic due to new Christmas phones and shenanigans.
I was wondering if anyone one else is experiencing this or can test it as well. Any suggestions and/or comments?
Interesting Can you tell me more?

Are you roooted on JB now, or not? If rooted...can you try Wifi Tether for Rooted Users and compare the performance you get? That is one suggestion. I am holding off on JB because of big questions on tethering performance and stability (compared to FoxFI/ICS)
Root checker says I'm not rooted. I'm still using rooted apps like titanium and SQL. Su is still granting permission to apps so I would say yes I'm rooted. I voodoo befor coming over. I'll try some third parties. I was gonna try foxfi but that's not working at this moment

I have read no reports that FoxFi works with JB (rooted or not). I pretty confident you will need to try the Wifi for rooted users app, not FoxFi.
agreed. well i ran some speed test today and im back to normal speeds again so it must ahve been holiday related for my crappy tethering speeds. i spoke with a verizon rep anyways and they are sending me a new phone anyways, but i ran several speed test today while tetherd and im around 70 ping 5-6mb down 1-2 up. so its all good
