Okay, a few noob questions rolled into one thread - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

All right, so I just my Thunderbolt a couple days ago, rooted it, first time truly rooting a phone, used Revolutionary. Now for my noob questions.
Will saving apps to my SD card keep them on the phone after installing a new ROM?
I tried installing a BAMF ROM with Sense 3.0, it was laggy and I couldn't access the market, said I needed background data. ROM said it required a MR2 or above radio, I don't know if I have that or not, I'm guessing not since I couldn't access the market. Is there a way to check which radio I'm using?
I'm using the free version of juiceDefender, are there any noticable perks to upgrading to a paid version?
One last question, is there a good calendar app that will have a useful agenda widget (similar to BlackBerry's today feature)?
I'd like to learn what I can as fast as I can and stop being a noob ha ha. I ask about the paid apps 'cause I'd want to buy setCPU and really ramp up my speed. I'm using a free app right now and getting 1.2GHz, but I want 1.4GHz speed.
Okay, I lied, this is the final question, can someone link me to a good easy to understand noob rooting thread that can really help me understand more perks and good to do things with rooted phones?

Background data error should only be happening because you don't have wifi or 4g/3g on,so turn on either. Then go to market it would ask you to enable background data if it off
As for checking the radio not sure.
But on the benefits of root, in my experience is unlimited I have also just go a tbolt couple weeks ago and I have been switching roms and kernels left and right to find the right one to fit my needs. And it's really better because you can customize your phone to something you like.
My tip is to read the sticky threads in the general section and q&a.

If its not a radio in the Gingerbread section, download BOTH radios, rename one to PG05IMG.ZIP and place on the root of the sd card, boot into hboot and let it update. After its updated and booted, delete that file from the root, rename the other and place on the root. Boot into hboot and update that radio. Doesn't matter the order. You can find a zip with both radios in one, i'm just lazy and did a quick search to find you that one.
As far as overclocking, look into custom kernals that support higher overclocking and the speedtweak.sh script is nice. I use IMO's kernals, then go into any terminal emulator on the phone (download from market), type su, hit enter, then speedtweak.sh, hit enter. Gives you some options. Also nandroid your phone before messing with overclocking speeds incase you set to a speed you're phone can't use. You can screw your phone up overclocking, be careful.

Custom kernels can be found in a sticky on the development page. If you started with the latest GB update, then you have the latest radios. For apps, use titanium backup from the market. It saves all apps and their data for you.

Good luck. Post back results or if you have any problems. And always always always back up current ROM and do a full wipe when flashing anything new (mod,ROM, kernel, radio) to your phone.

Don't not do a full wipe when flashing a kernel you are going to confuse him, if anything needs to be wiped just dalvik cache.
No wipe needed to flash a radio just do it.
Depending on the mod and what it changes just dalvik and clearing normal cache never hurts.

Okay, so I did notice one thing, I installed the Eternity Nightly theme, which I love, but I had to restore back to stock because when I used Titanium Backup to restore apps+data, it reset all my settings back to stock anyway and I really want to use the theme that comes stock with Eternity Nightly. Did I do something wrong?

when you do the restore on Ti, select only the apps you need, not all. Sounds like you restored some system files too that reset your theme.

I was attemting to try again, but there was an issue backing up the boot image. Is there a way to fix that?

Where are you backing up? I'm assuming through CWM? If it failed to back up, boot your phone up, download rom manager if you don't have it, and have it flash CWM recovery again. Then try to back it up again.

Yes, CWM, I have ROM Manager, I tried flashing recovery and attempting again twice, same issue, can't backup the boot image.

Figured it out, there wasn't enough space on my SD card for the backup, I found out when I tried to record a voice note and it said I didn't have enough space to record. I was using an 8GB card, but I think I'll have to switch to the 32GB. I was using sav ming the 32GB for a new mp3 player but a rooted phone could use it better I think.

So, I know what a sense ROM is, but what are the differences between and sense ROM and an ASOP ROM?
And what are the advantages of flashing different kernels?

AOSP = Android open source project. So Sense ROMs are based soley on HTC phones. AOSP is a more general Android OS. If you're running a Sense based ROM, you use a kernel for that specific style. Generally, using a kernel for one ROM on the other style ROM will most likely cause problems...

The only question I have with it, is how do I get FriendStream to work? I use FriendStream all the time (until I get to alpha test Social Scope), so any help is greatly appreciated. I hate the stock FB app/site, the news feed is crap now.

Saying Hi, ROM Recommendations & Other Noob Questions

Kind of long, but genuine, trying not to get too much bashed here...
Preface/Experience: A year ago or so I experimented with the Samsung Nexus S line of phones from all the major carriers, rooted them, flashed some ROMs, etc, and all my knowledge was learned from here (thanks!), but that was a while ago. I ended up not keeping any of them due to issues at the time with them (GPS locking, single core, 3G, etc) and decided to wait for some newer technology. I recently picked up an HTC Sensation to finally replace my old Blackberry after I had some issues with it the other day. As soon as I took it out of the box, my girlfriend was all mad because the entire time she has had her Thunderbolt she has complained about the SMS application not having separate "bubbles" for the chat windows, and of course Sense 3.0 does this (yes, she has tried handcent and such but doesnt like it). She also fell in love with the Sense 3.0 lock screens I have, home screen scroll, etc. I decided this would be a good first task for me to get back into the Android game...
I spent the first day or so searching about what the hell S-On/S-Off were, how to root these, etc. I successfully have S-Off, root, etc on both our phones via the revolutionary application, clockwork recovery is installed, as well as titanium backup. I have also successfully flashed a synergyROM onto her phone with Sense 3.0 and she has been enjoying it for the most part.
Now, onto the questions...
First, as nice as this ROM is, its a little too modified for her liking. Is there a ROM that would suit her desires better? She is looking for basically stock looking, bloatware removed if possible, with Sense 3.0 messaging and lock screens at a minimum. Nothing too major really, just UI tweaks.
Second, am I correct that after flashing a ROM you need to reinstall titanium backup each time so you can restore your apps and data? Is there a Zip file I can store on the SD card to install TiBu so I dont have to sign in and get it from the market each time?
Third, am I also correct that the main purpose of clockwork recovery is to backup the ROM, and the main purpose of TiBu is for the apps and their data? Meaning, to get the stock ROM back on this phone, I use clockwork to flash the backup I made, then use TiBu to flash the backup I made with that? I know this seems simple, but I just want to be clear Im thinking about this correctly.
Fourth, does it make a difference if I boot into clockwork recovery to flash a ROM versus doing it through ROM manager?
Oh, and fifth. WTH is a radio file/ROM/whatever you want to call it and how do you know which one you have? We are having an issue with her 4G not working on this new ROM I flashed, I assume its an error on my behalf, possibly the radio file? I'm not too clear on what those are just yet (I know, I should know before I started, but oh well)... I will be searching again through the 5 mile long thread over at the site where I found the ROM about 4G connectivity, but so far I haven't seen any issues posted by other people which is why I think I might have missed a step or something.
Any insight to any of these questions is appreciated, and I thank you all in advance!

Ok... Got to a real keyboard so I'll toss some answered out there and try to put some structure to the not so structured wealth of information...
One: Synergy is probably the most tweaked up ROM out there. If you're looking for something that's simply bullet-proof reliable, I highly recommend BAMF Forever. Chingy also has some good ROMs in the Gingeritis line. BAMF can be found at teambamf.com and Chingy's ROMs are at themilkmik.com.
If those prove too modified, there's a few debloated ROMs based off the latest OTA patched up to fix the problems with the OTA version.
Two: You wouldn't be looking for a .zip for Titanium Backup. You'd be looking for an .apk file. Not sure where to find that though. Not may devs pack a backup app with their ROM because tastes vary and TiBu isn't the only app that does what it does.
Three: You pretty much have the idea regarding Clockwork backups (a.k.a., nandroid backups). I will direct you to my Q&A thread linked in my sig regarding TiBu. Basically, doing a batch backup is all good, but doing a batch restore is an excellent way to render your ROM useless. Devs use different apps and versions and frameworks and the system data often doesn't work well one ROM to another.
Four: Regarding CWR and Rom Manager, pretty much every dev recommends against using Rom Manager for flashing their ROM. There seems to be issues for whatever reason and it's just proven unreliable over time. A custom recovery is the only good way to flash a ROM and perform the various utility functions a custom recovery affords. You have your choice between CWR, Amon Ra, and TeamWin.
Five: Let me break this down into the 6 basic kinds of flashable files. First, and most common is a ROM. This is the OS, kernel, and UI along with whatever apps the dev has added They are usually 250MB to 310MB .zip files.
Second would be a kernel. ROMs are packed with kernel, but custom kernels exist that may be better for your purposes.
Third, would be radios. Radios can be individual radio firmwares, or a pair of them for CDMA and LTE all in one .zip file. A pair will be roughly 24-25MB, a single radio roughly half that. I explain more about radios in my thread.
Forth would be custom recoveries. These you rarely need to flash, perhaps never, so long as the version you're using supports the ROM's that are out there, and just about every version out there for the Tbolt does.
Fifth would be bootloaders. This is something you pretty much NEVER need to flash unless you've got a pretty good reason to mess with it. Bad radio and bootloader flashes will brick your device.
Sixth would be an RUU. An RUU is a full firmware package for your device. New bootloader, stock recovery, stock kernel, stock ROM, and radios.
There are also mods and patches that you can flash as well. Those are done in the same way as ROMs and kernels. The firmware hierarchy would look something like [bootloader>radio>recovery>ROM] with the bootloader being about as basic as it gets. Once you get used to how all this fits together it will make a lot of sense.

I kind of feel like a horses ass because Im not sure how I missed that Q&A link; I presume its because I was doing nothing but searching the forums and didn't see the stickies somehow - d'oh. Kind of embarrassing to read that right after doing exactly what it says not to do (ask for ROM suggestions, ask a question about the radios which is laid out as well).
I was looking at the BAMF ROMs just last night actually, looks like I will check those out. I chose the Synergy simply based off the 3 screen shots I saw with the Sense 3.0 (which was my goal). That ROM is pretty cool, but as I said, its a bit much for my (her) needs at this point. Since I got it swapped around and such, it seems Im on the right track none the less.
Ahh, apk, duh. Also the logic as to why its not included makes perfect sense, I hadnt thought of it like that since I just saw those two (clockwork and TiBu) as the "common standard" and went with them even though Im sure plenty of people use others. I just thought I read in one of the how-tos that "setting up accounts" could be skipped simply by loading a TiBu, but since you cant do that without having it and you have to setup the market account to get it, it seemed bassackwards to me I suppose. Oh well. I've made do just fine so far by loading it through the market both times I've needed to.
I assume by "custom recovery" you mean the recovery console using custom software such as CWR which has replaced the factory console. I used CWR to flash it the first time and then when I messed it up with the TiBu restore (which you also covered in your Q&A I read last night after I figured it out and fixed it), I re-flashed it via ROM manager and had no issues that way either - hence the question originally. I will stick to doing it through CWR.
The order of things makes some sense to me now and the light is starting to shine through. I still didn't see much about the radio in the ROM thread, so I'm still curious why we are only looking at 3G. I also (oddly?) didnt see a recommended radio to go with the ROM, but it was late and I was tired. I will look into this again.
Is there a good source for a nice clean stock RUU for her phone just in case we need to go back to stock to warranty it? It has a loose charging plug currently that we may want to have addressed. Alternatively, is there a better way to get it back to "out of the box stock" than flashing an RUU?

I think the RUU for 2.11.605.3 is floating around here somewhere. If it's not here, it's on Rootzwiki. The problem with flashing an RUU to return to stock is that if you rooted via Revolutionary it's not going to work. The bootloader Revolutionary is patched to prevent overwriting. You'll need to find a guide for unrooting after a Revolutionary root, but I think I have one in my thread. If you rooted via ADB, then flashing an RUU should do the trick.
Not really sure why LTE isn't working. LTE and CDMA data are handled on the same chip with the same radio so if one doesn't work, the other shouldn't work either. My best suggestion is try a different radio. I'd suggest the 2.10 radio or one of the 2.11 radios. People have generally been having pretty good luck with those. You might try going into the radio settings and forcing it to use LTE Only. If it can't find an LTE signal it'll revert back to 1x. For reference, any radio from an RUU 1.70 or later will work just fine with all the Gingerbread ROMs currently out there.

Turns out it was in fact user error. There is a toggle built into the ROM to exclude LTE service if you wish *facepalm*
I had looked in a radio menu before after the first flash knowing of such toggles, but it was already selected correctly. It got reflashed after the TiBu mishap, still no 4G, and we called it a night. Today I found where someone mentioned a toggle and where it was, so I texted her to look following those directions. Sure enough she found it and she was able to change it to have 4G. I'm curious which menu I looked in initially and which menu she found the toggle in now. In any case, it seems its all working and that's what matters.

There's two of them, I know. Don't know why we need two that basically do the same thing, but we do! Glad you got it working. I use an app called LTE On/Off for flipping back and forth. Sometimes you need that because it'll stick on 3G when you know you're in an LTE area and it helps to kinda force it.

I thought I would stick with sense roms for a while, but I've had it a month, and I'm already using launchers to change the look and feel.
Anyways, I wanna try an aosp rom like cm7 or thunderbread.
Right now I'm running gingeritis 3d (sense), and I used the kernel that was recommended.
My question is, and I know this is a lot about preference but, what is the best aosp rom out there right now that's stable and fast? And what kernel should I use? battery life isn't a huge deal for me since I'm near a plug most of the day, but I'd like at least 6-7 hrs from it.
if anyone has any info and suggestions, I'd appreciate it

There is no best. there is all personal preference. The asop/asop type roms I can think of off the top of my head is OMFGB, MIUI, and CM7. All being at a stable point in development. So look at them and figure out which one you would like best

I'm on taptalk right now so searching is a real pain. Look up imoseyn kernels. He has sense and asop roms. Go to the development section. Plenty of info there for you. Whatever you do do not rush into flashing something just because you want to. Read, research, read some more, then make sure you understand what your doing before you do, so if you have an issue you can possibly save yourself lots of headache.

I've done a ton of reading, researching and everything. I'm not a tech noob at all. I actually own a pc repair business. and I've successfully flashed phones before.
Like I said, I did the first flash a day or so after getting it (to Gingeritis 3D) and everything went fine. (after getting the correct radio that is)
Anyways, I choose CM7 and downloaded Zoom kernel, which is Here
The CM7 file i downloaded is: update-cm-7.1.1-Thunderbolt-signed.zip
Which I thought was the correct one.
I also downloaded a MR2.5 radio. Although I'm not 100% its the BEST one, but I know it works with CM7. and I did get a signal with it.
but even after wiping everything, and doing it over and over, I can't get past the white htc splash screen.
Do you have any idea what I'm doing wrong?

I had been doing everything right, but it seems Clockwork Mod Recovery was corrupt or something.
What I did:
I restored back to my last backup.
Opened Rom Manager
Click "Flash Clockwork Mod Recovery" (the top one, even if it says your up to date)
after it flashes CWM successfully, either download and flash a rom from Rom Manager, or do it manually as I did.
And after the flash, I rebooted, and it went right to the CM7 boot animation, and loaded perfectly.
If you were like me and searched google, and found lots of posts with the same issue, but no solutions. So I hope this helps others.

I hope you didn't take what I wrote as negative to your skills. I didn't mean to make it sound like you didn't know what you were doing lol just threw ideas out there hoped one might spark a thought.
Glad you got it up and ruining. Already nice when someone posts how they fixed something, in case any of us end up with the same issue gives us more troubleshooting ideas.

i've used many sense & aosp roms myself and will say that aside from sticking with an actual cyanogen rom directly, the latest "SHIFTAO5P" that's been re-worked by dhacker, 2.8 is really nice & stable(and the location/gps actually works).
I agree with you on the sense though, I could never stand the actual sense launcher and always just used Launcher Pro.

Also if you use aosp you will run into issues with the flash player. I know when I was on CM7 it happened. I tried out MUIU and I had problems with flash and I had to do that flash player trick (look it up) to get it to work. I never tried OMFGB but I have tried CM7 and MIUI and they're both sweet. My favorite one is Liquid Smooth. but its up to you. They're all great

[Q] Trying to figure out what to do next (noob questions)

First of all I would like to apologize if you have heard these questions a thousand times before, but I have done a fair amount of reading and haven't gotten enough concrete answers to be confident enough to continue.
I just got up the courage to root my Fascinate after over a year of having it by following droidstyle's excellent guide. It was very painless and worked first shot, so no worries there. Now I'm at the point of what to do next... I have already frozen the bloatware and looked into some 'root-friendly' apps but I'm not sure where to go from here. I think I've decided I want to get the most out of this thing as I'm not due for an upgrade for (what seems like) a long time. I'm under the impression that installing a good ICS rom is the way to go but I just have a few noob questions before I continue.
1) From what I have been reading Glitched AOKP ICS is the best rom to use currently on the Fascinate, correct? Also quick question, regarding the link to download it... is the current version the build 34 one or the milestone 5 one at the top?
2) Rooting my phone initially didn't erase any of my apps or data. What will installing an ICS rom erase, if anything? I will make backups of course, but I'm just wondering what to expect. Will the 'bloatware' apps still be there or will installing ICS install new system apps?
3) What market apps should I consider 'must haves' to tweak stuff? I already bought setcpu but haven't invested in anything else yet.
4) I plan to follow section 4 of droidstyle's guide but need clarification... even though I have rooted stock 2.3, I should still follow all steps right?

1) M5 is newest. Get glitched build off of the exynos server.
2) Complete wipe. A desktop equivalent would be formatting your hard drive with Windows Vista installed and doing a fresh install of windows 7.
Backup all data and contacts locally or on the cloud. Do NOT use Verizon to backup your contact data. Use Google or a local backup instead.
No bloatware will be present since custom roms do not come from the carrier.
3) NSTools. Maybe Root Explorer or wi-fi tether for google
4) Just follow the guide. Rooting doesn't have much to do with recovery and intalling ics and such.

Not to knock ICS, because I love AOKP, but you could also consider working your way there over time. I had a lot of fun playing with different Touchwiz ROMs like SC3 and TSM Res. You may even find one along the way that you want to stick with for a while. At the very least, you'll learn to get where a complete data wipe doesn't even slow you down.
There's so much good stuff still available for this phone. My phone is sheer perfections right now, but I still have plans to try out GeeWiz and MIUI.
Everyone knows the current destination is Glitched AOKP, but the fun is in the journey.

I agree. I would download everything rom,kernel, and app you can find for the phone between here and rootzwiki, just in case links go dead. Tsm res and awesome sauce are two very good roms that I had a ton of fun with. They are more forgiving to the new user as far as making mistakes goes. Couple of things to know before you continue are that you can use the three finger method to get into recovery on touchwiz roms but not the ics roms(must enter recovery through power off menu). You also cant just flash back and forth from touchwiz roms and cm7 or ics roms, as you have to follow certain steps

Well I was planning on jumping right into ICS as it looks amazing and I don't think I want to wait... however I wouldn't be opposed to the idea of trying different roms later on down the road. Is it going to be a pain to go backwards from ICS, or just flash like usual? Also, to those that have tried most of the 'good' roms, what would you consider your top 3 non-ICS?
Also on the subject of backing up my apps... I have been using Mybackup as it seems the most simplistic to use and reliable. Will my apps be exactly as they were when I backed them up (after switching to ICS) or is it just better to re-download what I need and configure them again?
I hate to spam some more questions but I figure since I already am... just a few more...
I haven't really messed with Setcpu that much, but is it bad to have it at 100/1000 or should I keep the max lower than that? And last one... what's the best wifi tether to use so Verizon won't send their goons after me? Is the USB tether from clockwork mod any good?

You can go from touchwiz roms to isc roms by flashing but you need to do a lot more using the computer to go backwards. It will make more sense once you have a better understanding. Use titanium backup to backup your apps. If you really dont have any then just redownload them. If you are on the touchwiz roms you can use setcpu, but for ics roms you are going to be using an app called nstools or from control (built into settings section of rom). Again, more of this will make sense later down the road that is why I figured it would be better to start on a from like tsm Res or awesome sauslce

I think TSM Res looks top for me with the features, but I might try more than just 1. I've heard not to restore data backups when going ICS... does this apply to GB roms as well? Should I also switch the radio or is what I have the same as the GB one? Thanks

That is a nightly and has a minor bug where apps on SD card force close. No biggie for more experienced users who know its a nightly and can deal. Nightlies are bleeding edge releases and as such can contain a bug or two. Milestones are stable releases to be used as a reliable daily driver if one is needed (some do). I recommend the m5 release since it is a milestone and you are new to this. I also want to see you have the best experience possible.

I'm in a similar spot. I put CM7 on my wife's phone a while ago, but she has downloaded so much crap on it it's running like garbage and crashing.
Does the AOKP M5 have any bugs I should be aware of? As long as it's working well and everything is working (WiFi, Camera, MMS, etc), she'll be fine with it as a daily driver.
Two other questions I have.
Where can I get the correct glitchy Kernel?
Do I just need to download the ROM and kernel, wipe data/cache, then flash the ROM then kernel, then gapps (in that order) in Clockwork Recovery? Anything else?
She really likes the ICS stuff I've been showing her on my Rezound, especially the speech to text typing.

Get the Milestone 5 Glitched build found HERE
It includes the Glitch kernel, so no need to flash separately, and also has a few extra cherry picks thrown in. This is a Milestone build, so no real bugs, should run smooth as silk.
I'm not sure of the recommended radio for fascinate on ICS.

Get the Glitched build as it has fixes, extra available RAM, and much more not available in the AOKP official build.
Wifi, cam, and MMS all work fine. I can't honestly think of anything not working off the top of my head. NovaLauncher (Regular is free, Prime is $4 and well worth it for gestures) is recommended at this point since Apex has gotten a little slow.
Radio is recommended to be EH03 though I think ec09 and anything newer than eh03 work fine. I am running EH03 and no complaints.

I think I remember reading something about torch not working in ICS... is that the type of app that turns on the LED? Believe it or not I use that a lot and it would be a pain if it didn't work when I switch.
Also, is there any way to check what radio you're currently using before flashing? Tried looking that up but couldn't find it

Ah yes...torch doesn't work but you can use the tiny flashlight app to turn on the flash and achieve the same functionality.

The Tiny Flashlight + LED app? That's actually what I'm using now and if that works then I'm all set... I thought when people said 'torch' they just meant any app that turns on the LED

I flashed and ran into 1 problem. I had to flash Team Hacksungs Build 2 ROM first. Flashing glitched put me in an endless boot. Then I couldn't boot to recovery. I really was flipping out.
I had to Odin a new recovery in, wipe, then flash Team Hacksungs Build 2 ROM. For some reason, it booted into AOKP (?) then. I went back to recovery, wiped, reflashed AOKP and got it working.
I haven't searched yet, but anyone know where I can change the boot screen? It's really not a "wife friendly" boot screen.

As I understand it, torch refers to the built in flashlight feature in aokp called torch. Tiny flashlight plus the widget give similar functionality.

[Q] Options...

Hi...I'm new to the world of rooting and such...I rooted my Thunderbolt last week using the one-click program (found from different thread on XDA)...Now, I would like to install a more current rom since ICS is still not available. Also, I would like to improve this phone's perforrmace (I know it can do more).
There are a lot of different rom's at there and I am looking for something stable and does not cause any loss of phone features(very important)...The sense interface is nice, but I do not know what else people are using. If possilbe, something that is not an all day affair to download, setup and so-on.
Please give me some thoughts (I know this is very subjective, but most of you will have better insight that I do about what will work and the level of difficulty to set-up).
Also what happens to the phone when future updates are released from either HTC or Verizon??
My phone is Sense 2.1, Gingerbread 2.3.4 and Software(Radio??): 2.11.605.19710RD.
Also, will I have to worry about things like different kernels or radio upgrades??
I appreciate everyone's input in advance and I know there will be many thoughts.

HTC finished our ics build and we are now waiting on Verizon to decide whether or not to push the ota. If you're looking for a stable rom and everything works then try thundershed 1.6 or any rom with that as a base. They are all very good roms. I personally prefer sfkcm7.2. As for ics liquid ics is really very good and most of the issue with it are minimal. If a working camcorder is a must then its not for you.

Also, can you help me understand what steps I will have to follow for this to work correctly?? Meaning additional software, formatting etc. so everything is working afterwards.
The Liquid ICS I think I will stay away from for now...What will happen when OTA updates are sent??
Sidebar: Currently, my Standalone GPS Services icon is constantly flashing in the toolbar and draining the battery...only way around is to manually toggle off & on the service...This started after I ran v6 supercharger script...Did I do something wrong or does this script not work well with the Thunderbolt??

The only thing I would suggest that you download is 4ext recovery. There is a thread for it in the development forums. It will replace clockworkmod recovery with 4ext recovery and it is all touch screen. You can buy the full version from the market and I will say it is worth the money. If you dint have titanium backup that is another that you should download. You can get a free version from the market. Don't worry about otas once you flash an aosp rom. That has been disabled in the rom to prevent bad things from happening. Most sense based roms have it removed to but if you get the notification then postpone it as long as possible and Google how to disable it. I know the name of the file that needs to be renamed I just don't remember exactly where it is located.

Agree with the Thundershed recommendation. It has been more stable than the stock phone with with better performance and way better battery life. Everything works including the wifi hot spot.

[Q] Elegancia vs. Viper ROMs

Reading through the ROM descriptions as well as through the forums it seems to me that Elegancia is generally concerned with optimal performance and battery life and Viper is mostly about customization and tweaks. Would experienced users say this is somewhat accurate? I'm asking because I just completed my first root and custom ROM install for my One X+ the other day and I chose elegancia because one of the main reasons I took the plunge into this daunting noob territory was that i wanted to improve what seemed the only real drawback to a great phone, namely the battery life, and this was highlighted in the elegancia description. And improve the battery life it did-- I now can get a FULL DAY (~13-14 hours) out of a charge, not having to resort to powersaver or be judicious with what I do with my phone. It's amazing how liberating this feels.
Anyway, I've been reading up on the Viper ROM and am loving all the personalization options it describes, namely the keyboard and theme options...but it doesn't say anything about the battery life in the description. What are people's experiences with battery life with this ROM? I am not prepared to give up the battery life I'm attaining with elegancia, but if if Viper could give me a couple extra hours than I had on the stock ROM, while perhaps not attaining elegancia levels, I still might be attempted to cross over.
When I get settled into a setup I will be making some donations.
Also, what's the best method for backing up apps and then reinstalling them after you flash a new ROM?

Take a backup in recovery and for Apps I use Titanium Backup.
I just moved from ARHD to Viper to test it, so that's what I did... If I don't feel comfortable with Viper I can put recovery and boot.img back and then restore my nandroid backup to have my phone back to where I left
Or install ARHD again and restore apps and data with Titanium. Never restore system apps and setting when moving between ROMs!

Do a backup and flash viper you can just use the same stock kernel I beleive as long as they havnt changed anything and try it out and if you font like it just restore your backup and your right where you left off

You should not restore the things under systems apps, but you can easily restore user apps (and data). Maybe they have changed something in system so it's better not to restore this... What do you mean with "HTC Sense apps"? In Viper they are included as well, so no need to restore them.
You don't have to redownload anything.
Titanium gives you the option to "Restore missing apps and data", you should not overwrite existing apps with your backup. If needed you can choose to restore only the app data so you can get back settings you did in apps (like bluetooth devices and stuff like that).
Titanium stores its backup in sdcard/titanium

I can understand the questions, it always takes me hours and hours (if not days!) to get a phone where I want it to be... all the apps, widgets, settings and other personal things, it's not done with "just flash the ROM"...

Yes I discovered that...great app!
I mucked around a little bit and decided on DeSensed Elegancia with the Apex Launcher. I like the smoothness and some of the widgets in Sense but I know it's a big memory/battery drain and I love the customizability of the other launchers (themes/icons, number of apps per page etc.). Loving it so far and am thinking of trying the adw launcher on top of Apex for a bit.
Am pretty comfortable with backing things up and restoring now so it feels like I have a lot more freedom to explore and try things out.

I didn't realize that, and it's not my intention to start a turf war-- both ROMs are fantastic achievements-- I'm just trying to find the one that most suits my needs.

True, but I would also like to ask a few questions to make my flashing as efficient as possible. It can often take a couple days to really figure out if something is for you or not..the more info I can collect from other sources makes it easier for me to know where to start.

I really love Sense things, especially the weather stuff! :good: I use ADW, and combined with Viper you can have endless tweaks and customizations!
With my use of phone the battery lasts for at least 2 or 3 days, sometimes up to 5 days with original ROM. So I don't bother about getting one or two hours more or less with De-Sensed ROMs... If you really want to have pure Android ROM try AOSP or Cyanogen...
