[Q] Install Streakmod without USB or Root - Streak 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
Is there a way to root the 406 rom without Fastboot(USB)?
I have a busted PDMI port (bent pin) which Dell refuse to replace. So I'm stuck with wifi and direct transfer to SD card only.
I was running Streakdroid 1.9.1 and managed to install the 406 (recovery406.img) with the 'flash_image' command from a terminal on my phone.
Rebooted in recovery and installed the 406 (update.pkg).
No issues with the update and my baseband is now: GAUSB1A140614-EU
Android Version: 2.3.3
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-perf
Build: 19940
I'm stuck with the next step though...
Is there a way to root so I can run, 'flash_image recovery recoverysm.img'?
or anything else I can do to load the GingerStreak-2.4.4.zip file?
I've tried z4root (1.3.0) and Universal Androot (1.6.2 b5) without success. I tried Gingerbreak too, but after 30 minutes it never completes (most likely because I'm not connected via USB right?)
Any ideas??

Thanks lufc, that fragile PDMI port is a common fault for us streak users. Any assistance with alternative flash methods is greatly appreciated!

i guess u can try this

flash_image requires root, which all custom roms are pre-rooted.
the only correct way to install a custom rec is though fastboot, flash_image works but not generaly supported. I don't believe you can root any rom newer then 360 without using superuser.zip which requires streakmod which means you're completely stuck on your rom

Ah ok, thanks for searching guys I really appreciate it!
The stock 2.3.3 is ok for now I suppose, battery life seems to have dropped quite a bit though.
I'll wait a while before investing in a new port.... perhaps the Gingerbreak man will release a working update for this rom soon
Cheers.

For anyone in Singapore, there is a guy who can replace the PDMI port. Search Facebook:
"SG IRepair
Hi is cost around $90 include installation. Jimmy 81121061"
I'll still keep my fingers crossed for an updated Gingerbreak for now...

try flashing any recovery img file (depending on what rom/pkg are you trying to update) on your streak, do not reboot. just take out the battery right after flashing (DO NOT REBOOT , if you reboot it, it will just go back to your default recovery) and then update your new pkg or zip file .... you're done downgrading/upgrading
you do not need to root your device anyway....
for exampleut the Streak_351_15609_00(2.2.2).pkg (froyo) on your SD card .... flash a 351 recovery img, then after flashing, take out the battery. turn your device on (hold volume up + down + power) ... choose number 2 then your done.. your device will now update your rom...

[Q] Root on KB5?

So, I had to flash back to JFD because I soft-bricked my phone. Now when I updated, it took me to KB5.
I'm puzzled because all of the things I've used to try to root it just fail. Does anyone know how to root KB5, since nothing has worked so far?
There might be easier ways, but try this, think the v4 will do it. Theres a few posts in the bible with instructions if this doesn't work for you.

Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
just a quick reminder when you flashed KB5 where you on 2.1 or 2.2
and if i am not mistaking you must be on 2.2 or Higher.
Hope That Helps
ALL the stock 2.2 roms for our phone have a new recovery (3e). Because of this, the usual methods to root (the update.zip methods) don't work, and you'll get a signature verification error.
You need to root using SuperOneClick, and this will root your phone. But you also need to clear space in the /system partition in order to install busy box (you might think it is already installed, but reboot your phone and it won't be).
In order to flash .zip files, you either need to odin/hiemdall a voodoo kernel, or replace the stock 3e recovery with a modded one. I'm not going to do any linking because simple searching in the vibrant dev thread will yield you your results.
So.......anyone wanna make a tutorial vid?
Flash Eugene's JK2 Odin Image, comes with the modded recovery and root already built in, and you can do whatever you need to do from there:

You can get root that way on KB5, but you *cannot* install recovery on KB5. If you had recovery before KB5 and upgraded via CWM flashing, you still have CWM recovery. But if you ODIN or KIES to KB5, and then try to install CWM Recovery, it will fail and you will not be able to make it work.
Short version: Root on KB5 Possible. If you want CWM Recovery, you have to downgrade to an older build and get your Recovery working there, then upgrade using a CWM flashable ONLY.

I just want root. I have no intention of flashing ROMs. I'm on a pure stock KB5.
Can you tell me which steps in those instructions can be skipped, if any?
Thanks.

Ok. Looking at the Wiki instructions I see this:
2. Boot the Samsung Vibrant into download mode by holding down Volume Up & Volume Down while connecting the microUSB to it.
I'm trying to visualize this. It sounds like you hold down the power button, and the volume up/down rocker with one hand, while inserting the USB into the phone with the other hand. Is that right? How critical is the timing of inserting the USB?
I've searched YouTube but am not finding this specific "boot while inserting USB" procedure.
Also, from the instructions it appears I would be installing a non-stock kernel. Is that required just to get root?
By doing this are there implications for the upcoming GB upgrade from Samsung? In other words, would I need to undo something before doing a Kies GB upgrade?
Lastly, I see the "Voodoo/disable-lagfix" folder has to be created, and am wondering if those get installed by this procedure.
If I should be asking this somewhere else just let me know. Thanks.
Voodoo/disable-lagfix folders have to be created by you,
1.Vibrant power off
2. Volume Up & Volume Down
3. connect the microUSB to it but before the usb cable must be connected to your computer.
The kernel is patched so allows the superuser app to be installed over-writing bloatware unwanted stuff.
You can update to gb version but not recommended, when out of course
i Recommend to you when we have a gb version to just flash the new radio or/and bootloader, and keep flashing cyanogen firmware through Recovery
Hope i helped

Understand I need to create the folder, just wondering if Voodoo and lagfix get installed by this procedure automatically.
So, volume up and volume down, but don't press the power button to boot?
The complications are what I was concerned about. I don't need another hobby. I just want root. That's it. I want to be able to upgrade to stock GB when it's available. Sounds like it's more trouble than it's worth for the few things I want to do with root (block ads, etc).
If that's the case, no problem, I just want to understand before I proceed.
SuperOneClick doesn't work on KB5 Stock FroYo - at least not my phone. Just freezes at step 7 for like... ever.
Anyone can recommend an easy root app that has an unroot button? I just want to remove some bloatware that auto-starts...

[Q] From official 2.1 to custom 2.3 without usb connection

Hello. Today i bought my X10 but it has a problem. Usb it's not working. if i put it in a specific position it will charge. But for my computer it's completely invisible.
Rom=2.1-update 1 official version i guess
baseband 2.0.46
kernel 2.6.29 semcuser SEMCHOST 1
My question is:
could i update from 2.1 to custom 2.3 using only bluetooth or my Microsd card reader or any other alternative than flashtool? If not what is the best custom rom i could update to?
Thank you in advance!
A suggestion.. I had the exact same problem. It turned out the problem was with the cable, not with the connector on the phone. The micro usb standard was designed so that the cable rather than the connector would wear out over time. In my case a new cable solved the problem 100%. Would suggest trying that before concluding the phone is broken.
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
ok, thanks for suggestion, i will try it, but i doubt the seller didn't tried that already.
until then i still want to update to 2.3..solutions?
Unfortunately I don't believe there is any way to change the baseband and kernel without the usb connector. re. usb .. I suspect it doesn't occur to some to try a different cable as with most connectors (usb our otherwise) the problem is with the jack not the cable. Micro usb was intentionally designed the opposite way so that the jack could last over a large number of insertions.
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
it not about the position of the usb cable, but the usb connector on phone is moving a little, so i doubt it's an usb cable problem.
then..what is the best custom rom for my baseband?couldn't i update to official 2.3 to automatically change the baseband/kernel? sorry, i already searched for these and still searching, but couldn't find it yet. i'm not that kind of noob who just asks because it's simple for me that way
lated edit: i thought i could update to official 2.3 ota, but it's possible only by usb.
A few suggestions should a new cable not fix the problem:
I would suggest you consider the froyo rom WB-XPERIA TW. I used that prior to upgrading to gingerbread. There are 2 sets of basebands:
1)<=52 (what you have)
2)>=54
You would need to select the version which is marked 4x-52 or perhaps just 52.
In order to install you would need to root the rom and install x-recovery. I used the computer flash tool for this, but I am pretty sure there are other ways. You can then install the rom following the instructions given. (Pressing the back button a few times when you see the sony erickson screen to get to the x recovery screen while booting)
You may also be able to get a custom kernel working as the boot loader hasn't been cracked and thus a hack is used to get custom kernels to boot (I don't think they replace the kernel installed but hijack the process and start the custom kernel booting). Originally the custom kernels only worked with the earlier bands (52 and before) so there are still versions comparable with the earlier baseband set.
Be careful, I'm not sure what you could do if you make a mistake and want to reflash from scratch without the computer!

Here are the tools and a quick description on how they are used.
1. Enable install from unknown sources on your phone and install the apps from the files below.
2. Install Root Explorer from the Android Market (paid app). Don't try to use it until after the next step.
3. Run Z4Root app on your phone and it will root your phone for you.
4. Use Root Explorer to mount your system partition as R/W instead of RO.
5. Run the XRecovery app to get XRecovery installed onto your phone.
Z4Root
XRecovery (Old install by app version)
Edit... It's been awhile since I rooted by this method so I might of missed a step between 3 and 4. You may have to install busybox and superuser from the android market. (both free)

If you do manage to root it and install xrecovery, and if you can find a way to install the gingerbread kernel, I would advise using wolfbreaks latest gingerbread rom, rather than the froyo version scotths mentioned as I find it a lot faster and smoother.
Just make sure you backup your current rom first as you would have difficulties if it went wrong while flashing and you've no other way to reinstall.

Sorry,
Realised how I had phrased it after I posted it, so I amended it to say if he can manage to get the baseband and kernel installed.
thank you for your help, but i already repaired my x10(it costed me about 20eur at a local gsm service to solder/stick the usb to board which is a pretty hard job to do). He showed me at the service that the usb's pins were pulled completely from the board.
Now i'm on latest 2.3 baseband with wolf's rom, unlocked bootloader, latest doomlord kernel and works great.

Can't root retail Streak 2.2.2

I have been trying to read as much as possible before posting, but I am finally out of answers. I have a retail Dell Streak 5 unlocked running 2.2.2 build 17397, ver. 360, baseband GAUSB1A136000 that I have been trying to root for a while. So far I have tried SuperOneClick and Gingerbreak since those are the highest success methods. SOC won't allow me past step #5 and Gingerbreak hangs in the "rooting" screen for over 20 minutes until I give up.
I have tried Gingerbreak by installing from SD and direct via e-mail. The debug USB option on as required and the SD card formatted and mounted. I met the SOC Windows XP (only PC available at this time) requirements of .NET as well. I thought I would post all the details of my phone to see if you guys can see something that raises red flags. I have been reading around and not many people had ver. 360 at the time of rooting.

Manii's link details the only rooting method that has a 100% success rate: manually installing StreakMod Recovery then flashing Superuser.zip. One-click root solutions may be very successful, but the tried and true methods are infallible.
Thanks Strephon and Manii. I was wrong in thinking that StreakMod could only happen when rooted. After I got StreakMod on, it was gravy from there. Thanks for that link!

[Q] Can't find a solution, root vibrant with froyo and no usb

Ok, i would like to root my vibrant. I previously updated to froyo and am aware of the reasons you should flash back to 2.1 to root. But, my usb port does not work, and all the methods I have researched to root my phone with out being hooked to a pc still need the usb in order to flash back to 2.1.
Is there a rooting method i've missed? One that can be done with the usb and with froyo?

Your USB port doesn't work or your computer doesn't recognize your phone? Because that would be two different things altogether. If your computer doesn't recognize your phone, then just install the drivers (they can be found in the AIO toolbox in the Dev section stickied at the top). Load that on your computer, load .net on there two, open it up, install drivers and then plug your phone in after they are loaded. Will take a few minutes to pull in but if you are Windows 7 you should see an icon in lower left about it.
Also, I cannot understand why people keep using Oneclick or Superoneclick to root their phones. The past week has been filled with problems stemming from them both. All you have to do is go to the Noob Guide (stickied in this very section) and follow the section on Rooting. I rooted, downloaded a ROM/Kernel and flashed it all on my phone without ever plugging it into a PC.

try this...i m not sure if it will work or not but I have rooted motorola atrix with similar trick...
download an .apk file from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765
and then install it....good luck..
That didn't work either. I'm at a total loss for words. I don't think there is any way to root my vibrant without being able to use the usb port.
Anybody? anybody......
If you are just wanting to Root your phone that can be done easily, but you seem to have a much bigger problem b/c the USB is a really important function for transfering files like musi, vids,...
If you jsut want to root your phone, go to the Noob guide stickied at the top of this forum and download the update.zip (you can do this over 3g or wifi) put it on you sd card, reboot into recovery, blah, blah ,blah instructions are there.
See this part of that thread near the top::::::::
GREAT, I AM ON JFD NOW - HOW DO I ROOT?
HERE ARE THE STEPS TO FOLLOW....
BUT FIRST... WHAT UPDATE.ZIP FILE DO YOU NEED?
There are two options here. Choose before you start.
A – an update.zip (633KB) that roots your phone only. You can then install Rom Manager from the Market to flash CWR (Clockwork Recovery) and install custom ROMs. There have been issues with CWR not flashing properly recently (June 2011), hence Option B.
B – use the other update.zip (1.7MB) and this will flash CWR for you – allowing you to immediately flash a custom ROM.. I do this because it's faster.
So, A or B?
1.
A: Download this update.zip file to root your phone. You plan to install Rom Manager to flash CWR and a new ROM later.
B: Download this update.zip file to flash CWR... you will need to flash a custom ROM for Root. I prefer this method.
Also, download the ROM you plan to flash (assuming you are not sticking on JFD – why would you).

[Q] Alcatel OT-910 root and rom development

I have Alcatel OT-910, but i cant find anything about root & rom for this model here on xda-developers forum. I found threads for other Alcatel models (OT-908, OT-980, OT-990) and i was wondering is anyone working on this particular model? Is it possibile to have root access? stock ROM for OT-910? Thanks.

i have tried to root my OT-910 with SuperOneClick 2.3.3, but it doesn't work.
Keeps stuck at Step #7 Waiting for Device.
also tried to unplug and replug it at this part, but no chance.
any other ideas how to get root? Some of the installed apps are useless for me and eat up my memory, want to get rid of them
rooting problem
I've got OT910 too, tried several ways to root with steps, provided for other Alcatel android phones - no luck.
Try with different versions os superoneclick. Aso you should install Pdanet on your phone and your computer to and try again with superoneclick.
Sent from my ALCATEL one touch 990
No luck still
I tried all SuperOneClick releases, z4root, GingerBreak - nothing really works. The phone is hardly operable without root - too much garbage preinstalled.
Hey, i have an Alcatel OT-909a (which is the same as Alcatel OT-910 but with a lower px camera) and i also am unable to get root access, i already know that there is a stock busybox, and have seen some files of the internal memory but still not having luck, i also flashed some CWM and RA recoveries but i just got stuck while trying to access recovery, so i have to get back to stock recovery, i think there must be a way to do at least a nandroid backup and try to root the backup and flash again, but i dont know, the CWM recovery just boot the android logo, after there is nothing in the screen, but the QWERTY keys are on like if the phone was in recovery, i had tried Super One Click 1.9.2 and 2.3.3 and got stuck in step #7 too, zergRush and GingerBreak doesnt work also, something extrange for me is that the last time i try CWM, it didnt boot into recovery but into fastboot, as far as i know internal memory is read-only except for the installation of apps and some folders (or somehow i push GingerBreak and zergRush to the internal memory isn't?), i can't push su to the xbin or bin folders, but i already saw what is inside xbin an bin (as i said memory is read-only and there are some folders that requires permissions to access), there must be a way to push su to xbin folder (or at least maybe access su in another location?) but i still seeing how?
PD: sorry for my possible bad english speaking
PD2: yes i'm a noob and i hate myself but please some of you that know of this, help us?
Edit: just curious i just push su to "/data/local/tmp" then i just tipe ./su and it appeared on the phone "shell has been granted superuser permissions"

Here an idea: Custom Rom
hey guys, if some of you (someone, anyone who might wanna help?) are still maybe reading this thread, i wonder, i have played with the phone a little (unluckly i really messed up breaking the cellphone and luckily for me, the motherboard was replaced at service center), and i have been able to pull out most of the system partition, custpack and others, (except for the recovery partition) and i was wondering if maybe there is a way to create a custom rom with those files?, maybe we could create our custom rom and flash it, after seeing around the files, i got that 909a it's using what it's looks like at least the same kernel than ot910, (actually some information is from the ot910, in the manual it refers to ot909a-s ot910 as same cellphone but with different px in camera), so maybe we could create a custom GB rom based on the files from the stock system partition, and as alcatel has relased the kernel sourcecode maybe we could even do a custom kernel?, i was just wondering if someone can try to do a custom rom with those files, as i have tried flashing some GB roms replacing files and the phone doesn't boot up to android, but in recovery you get su access and pull the other files, but when replacing files, there is a moment when the system lose adb shell access, so maybe someone with more knowleadge (as i'm new to both android and linux) can help?
Rooting -- any news?
Has anyone succeeded in rooting the device in the meantime? I had no luck with either psneuter, zergrush, or gingerbreak ...
OT-910 successfully rooted!
Hi,
thank's to the great work of giantpune over at Phandroid, the Alcatel OT-910 has been successfully rooted (see the attached screenshot)!
For instructions, cf. the thread "Optimus Elite root with an apk" at Phandroid's LG Optimus Elite forum. Put in a nutshell, you have to install the following two APK's:
1. the Poot-debug.apk tailor-made for this phone, and
2. Ministro II.apk.
Both files are linked at the end of giantpune's original post at the LG Optimus Elite forum.
Note that Superuser, but not SuperSU, will grant root access on the OT-910.
Have fun!

If your last hope is xda... then maybe you will not have that much luck, if you're stuck at TCL logo, maybe you could try using the "OTU Upgrade Tool" (by means "OTU = Alcatel/TCL Flasher") and maybe that will do the trick and then you get your phone back to stock, if not (or if you already did that), then you're a little out of luck, as far as I know, there is no stock recovery around, and also as far as I know, there is no CWM recovery, now, in case you did use OTU Tool, and failed flashing the phone, then is almost sure that your nand is bricked, if you used OTU Tool and that didn't get your phone back, then you should see if you can still flash Android Images (more accurately 2.3.3 (since 2.3.4 did brick my phone twice)), at least with a non-functional 2.3.3 image, maybe you could flash from there with OTU again, or try to modify 2.3.3 system to work with your phone, if nothing of that did result for you, then you're out of luck, because I'm almost sure that would mean that you are in a nand brick, and the only way to solve it, is sending it to Service Repair (at least for now)
now, for using OTU Upgrade Tool, you can download it from TCL/Alcatel website ( www2.alcatelonetouch.com/global-en/support/download.html ) in the download section, select your phone model, and from there download the OTU Upgrade Tool, after downloading, install it and follow the instructions for getting the phone in "Download Mode" (in OT910 = (pressing "Q" key with the phone totally off, and after pressing the "Q" key for 30sec. or a minute, then (still pressing the "Q" key) connect it to the pc and follow the onscreen steps (that means, choosing your mobile and getting in to look for the firmware and download it)
I have a kind of "backup" of the system (I mean, every file that is in /system) but sadly, it doesn't have the properly permissions set, and so, it gives also a boot loop (also I bricked my phone once again and for worse, when it was out of warranty), so if you still in warranty maybe you should send it to service :/
that's the sad of life when your mobile is not the one that is being developed by expert developers (not even a beginner one )
Hope you can fix your phone
thanks for help

I will, but before, what version of upgrade tool are you using? (mine has a kind of strange bug that the rom is never ever able to get the last update (as always download saying there is a new update (it's a fake but anyway)), that would be kind of a problem since maybe after you flash 2.3.3 the upgrade tool will state that you're still in latest firmware (even through upgrade tool is supposed to be a service tool, funny isn't?), anyway, since you have nothing to lose (since apparently you flashed a custom recovery that didn't work for you), but, there are this two things you should try before, first (and pretty much the must obvious one) if you have warranty (as long as you're in warranty and never tried to see what's inside the phone), and two, there is a little possibility that maybe you can access adb via the recovery you flashed, even, when the tcl logo appears, try to do "adb shell" or "adb devices", so maybe you can recover your phone without the need of flashing android 2.3.3.
now, if nothing of that worked, then there is nothing to loose, if you have the android sdk, from there you can download a 2.3.3 image, that will boot, but display nothing in the screen (still you can do adb shell with su, and try to properly install libraries maybe?), if not, then i'll check if I can do one system image for you, and see what it does
by the way, if somehow you can access adb , try to do "adb pull" and pull the " /system" partition
it's really sad that we can't (at least not me) figure out, how to use the files that the upgrade tool uses ( 570mb of 10 - 520kb files)
Help me... alcatel 909
